In Joker, rich people are basically cartoon villains, while in Parasite, the rich family is... just a family. The parents had their jobs, the daughter was a stressed student and then there was the kid who needed babysitting. They felt much more human than they would be if written by Todd Philips. Joaquin Phoenix's performance was great, but thinking about the movie itself now, the stuff happening around him felt kind of over the top.

Joker's Gotham is the New York of 1984 and Arthur Fleck is inspired by the story of the vigilante of the New York Subway. I'd compare Joker to Jonah Hill's Mid90s. These are both films tribute to the teenage directors and cinema of this period. T. Philips was very inspired by Scorsese while J. Hill was inspired by L. Clark's Kids. I'm not saying that everything was successful. But the film nor deserve the shitstorm he was subjected nor the excess of praise.
