I think Steve nailed it. One thing that I think is especially important for Montreal specifically, Suzuki spent his summer and lives near full time in the city. He's embraced what it means to be a Canadiens player and has grown to love the community. There are certain expectations and commitments required of a Canadiens captain, and Suzuki checks every possible box. Throw in the contract and his on ice production, and he became the obvious choice.

It's always funny as a fan of a team listening to people, who have no clue about said team and cheer on another team, talk about your team. So hilarious and out of touch. As a bilingual canadiens fan who's followed french coverage of the canadiens for decades, finding obscure examples over the span of decades doesn't mean anything. Once a year, some member of a small-time french media outlet takes it too far, but for the most part, it's proffessional and respectful of player's personal lives. Please guys. I don't think it's fair to single out french coverage of MTL but *local* coverage in both languages I think does get more personal than in Toronto. I remember even the CBC morning show on the radio getting into personal controversy about Galchenyuk when I was there. I think it comes from literally everyone in the city being a big fan and that national English TV coverage doesn't pay much attention.
I honestly loved the media coverage of the Habs when I lived there - they just go really deep compared to other places.

If there's a knock against Gallagher in terms of potential captaincy, it's absolutely the future. Do you want Gallagher as captain in 2022? I think he'd be a great choice. Do you want him as captain in five years? Not as easy. The Habs don't do anything important for the short-term. Legacy, longevity, these are exceptionally important to them and their culture. So it doesn't shock me that they went with the 23 year old with good alts around him.

To me Suzuki reminds me of Horvat at his age. The situations are different as the Canucks had the Sedins and Kesler at first, so Horvat did not get top line minutes immediately and wasnt leaned on as heavily, but both are good centers who have shown they can perform in the playoffs and when it matters. Neither are going to score 50 or put up 110 points but they are captains for reasons other than just pure production.

I don't know. I've seen how destructive forcing a captain c on a young skilled guy prematurely can be. Joe Thornton wore that burden in both Boston, and San Jose and in neither situation was it a good idea. To me you give it to Gallagher. He's a heart and soul guy who's been with your team forever. He's had great success and he's had his rough moments. But he's always there and he always gives it his all. 3 years from now when his wheels have fallen off and he's no longer effective by all means at that point give it to the kid who's now more seasoned. It just seems like a bad idea to me to give a guy a captain c when you don't even know for sure what kind of player he's going to be yet. And that's the issue you are creating here you don't fully know the player he's going to be right now. If he never progresses beyond being a 20 goal 60 point guy and he's your captain that's kind of an issue. Especially when he's a loosing faceoff man and he doesn't block all that much and he doesn't hit all that much, and he's not great when it comes to giveaways vs takeaways. I get that he's got a reputation as a 2 way guy but lets be frank as things currently stand he's no Patrice Bergeron. He might grow into that but that's all the more reasons to wait and see. Making him captain now doesn't make much sense to me.

I love Gally, and think that honestly, they should've given him the C instead of Weber back when Pacioretty was traded. But while he's a good role model for the younger guys, as he leads by example, I think Suzuki was the better choice today, in 2022. He's a guy who has been handling the pressure of the Montreal media bubble for several years now - in fact, he deals with the media very well...Gallagher always looks awkward and stilted in that role. Nick has committed to this team for the long-term - he has an 8-year extension kicking in this year. Gallagher has 5 years left on his deal, but I think that his future with the team is a lot more uncertain...the way he plays the game leaves him more vulnerable to injury as he ages and picks up more stress on his body, and if he stays healthy and plays okay, I think Montreal is going to try to move him before he starts to have injury issues. And actually, I could see him asking for a trade at some point too, looking to capitalize on his skill in another market which is a little bit closer to winning a Cup than Montreal. And I think Nick has the temperament for the role (to be fair, so does Gallagher).
Jake Allen said in an interview that had it been up to a players' vote, Suzuki would have been the unanimous choice. And that says a lot I think. It means that they think he's right for the role, that he can handle it. They know him a lot better than the fans do, so I'm going to trust their opinion on this one. Young captains do sometimes work out. Crosby, Landeskog, Toews...they are some of the youngest captains in NHL history (not to mention McDavid, who IS the youngest ever named captain). Suzuki will be fine I think.

What's more important is for the team to form an identity around a core of players who WANT to be there and have the potential to win championships. You see in organizations like Buffalo and Arizona how toxic environments and a lack of identity can kill a rebuild so I'm glad the Habs are committing to their core and showing faith in them to grow into the future.
