The exterior of the Clio 197 is (in my opinion) a work of art....they look so perfectly proportioned yet compact. I really like these cars from a visual perspective.
I’ve got a black one and the exhausts look soooooo sexy. It’s a brilliant car to drive if you’re going all out (if you have a safe road or track to do it) but for general use it’s a bumpy fuel guzzler.
But if they charged VW prices people would say would you pay 25 grand for a Renault ? And there lies the problem the alpine a110 is an engineering master class but at 50 k everyone one says I de rather buy Porsche. Too many brand whores in the uk that care about the badge more than the car

I had one. Put 300 000 km on it. Did not have any engine problems. Just did all the normal services. Best little car ever. Handling is spot on. Went onto a megane rs 265. RS for life 😎

The Clio Rs 200 is the one to go for, one the best hot hatches ever. The 197 is still very good considering it's age. Shouldn't be compared to a Golf but would still rinse a similar aged standard one on a B road or track.
induction kit? lol no sorry brad it's a cheap shitty filter from Halfords or eBay on the end of the pipe where the airbox should be, sucking in hot air from the back of the engine lol
It’s not a blown diffuser😂😂 it’s just a regular one, adds 40kg of downforce at top end which is why they never added a top spoiler standard. And the vents in the wing are also for front downforce not brake coolers as so many people think
I've had a Mk5 GTI, now have a Clio 182. Found the Golf a nice car to drive but not that much fun, and the one i had was nothing but trouble. Put me off VAG cars a but tbh, and I've had a few over the years. The 197's are cheap because the gearboxes suffer from weak synchros, and the front suspension while really clever, costs a bit to maintain as its a swivel hub set up. You can get them from 2k but buying a cheap one is usually buying problems, these cars take abuse but don't like neglect.
Yeah I do, after 9 months in the Golf I was bored of it and fed up of the constant issues. Had the Clio 2 years now and love driving it as much now as I did the day I bought it. The only downsides are it feels a bit cheap and the belt service is expensive.

Am Singh I’d say to drive the Mk5 it is very competent, it’s smooth and it does handle very well, better than the Mk3 and 4 however as good as it is, it’s not exciting to drive. It just lacks character, and has plenty of issues like the balance shafts, cracked turbos, pcv valves, cam followers, electronic modules and rust, lots of rust. Soft touch plastics and solid sounding door shut gives a perception of quality, but sadly they don’t make the tough cars they used to. Having owned 10 Golfs mk1 to 5, it put me off buying another.
Mate I have the same car and I can tell you that steering should not have any room and when you go faster steering is heavier and you have a great feeling-that car needs service

The Clio compares to the polo, and the Megan’s compares to the golf. But the Clio is more than a match for the golf as lighter and runs the same power, whilst being roughly 50bhp up on the polo. I have a 200cup and recently did a Porsche only track day at brands. Whilst nowhere near quick enough to overtake anything, more than kept a badly driven 911 honest in the bends. Great cars, cup model stick tyres upgraded brakes love it.
My mate had an 02 plate one in black..and he enjoyed it..and fitted a nice little system in it/yellow fogs/custom exhaust etc. Yeah it was a little small..but nippy..and nimble around corners....He also did the same little things with a Saxo....For the price of a Clio as shown in the video..you can also get a MK5 TDI..or the GT-140/170..or an FR TDI for the same price, give or take....
the thing is my clio's glove box stays closed. remember the fact that you compared the 197 (which has already aged) with the 182 which aged even more. these cars would have felt very different when they first came out.

Me and my friend, met this other friend of mine who had new car.. we were ~20 and it was very nice to have a car, even old.. but he had new Clio rs.. and he was (well still is) rally driver.. anyway, my other friend didnt know that and thought it is just regular Clio.. we went for a drive... he screamed like a little girl in the first corner out ot village:) Btw clio friend owned and drove a car since he was 10-11.. i remember bcs that is when i met him:) he drove some old rwd polish fiat or whatever was that little thing:) so at 20 he was seasoned driver:)
You need to be careful they do a 2.0 vvt and they do the 197. The engine is completely different apart from the displacement, stroke and bore are completely different.
IMO It's a great looker of a hot hatch,but just not a patch on the German stuff,which your very well aware of Brad! 👍😎 You should seriously try & blag a go in a Scooby,Evo or something Japanese,seriously avoid FORD'S! 😜
So where are the just over 2k cars you mention ? You showed a few at 2.5 ? Steering on that car sounds broke too. There shouldnt be any dead zone at all. The electric power steering is only really light at slow speeds too
You should consider test driving a Civic Type R mate before settling for a MK 5 GTI the latter is a nice car but very dull in comparison, drove both back to back and decided on the fn2 Type R have had it couple years now and never get tired of that VTEC howl and being able to rev to 8000 rpm :) Only downsides are they don't have a great deal of torque so need to be revved and are very firm riding cars but there also a lot cheaper than the Mk 5 GTI and probably a lot more reliable.
Yea it's pretty crap ! The recaro Seats are some of the best if you get them but the rest is just so cheap. Even more so if you don't have the climate control and have some 80s style knobs

I'll tell u why they are so cheap after owning one. Fuel pump stopped working on mine then the electric boot wouldn't open then one of the cylinder went down took it to Renault in Cardiff they put on to computer to fix which it did intill I got half way dwn motorway lol. Apart from that it's a 140 mph car which handles well
Yes 100%. Something wrong with that car. I have a Clio 3 200 and the steering is really sharp. The 200 is a better car in every respect than the 197. Small improvements, but overall makes it sooo much better. 197's still great though!
The clio would see a fn2 civic off.. mate had a 220bhp civic tyre r with lsd an remap an my diesel a3 190bhp would smoke it so clio would embarrass it if you can drive it right!! 👍

They got the gearing all wrong on the early 197’s 134mph flat out and slower up there than the ole 182 cup. To heavy with little more hp than the out going 182 in reality no where near the claimed 197 hp.
He says then the traction control off but I don’t think it has traction control! Mine definitely doesn’t. He seems uncomfortable driving it and he should do on a road like that, take it to a track and test it properly mate! It’s a great car which actually takes some skill to drive. I’ve had faster cars and I’m definitely not driving this as well as I know I can yet but with fuel prices and cameras everywhere, good luck getting some practise in! Black is definitely the best colour for this car and silver by far the ugliest. And please rip that shitty air filter out, it’s embarrassing.
Review a good example, not a shitter with a £20 cone filter and dodgy steering lol. Not being an arse but everybody who’s driven both will tell you Megane/Clio RS’s are far more involving cars than their German rivals. I personally had a 182 for 2 years and didn’t have a single problem with it. I think the people that hate on French cars have never owned one or owned a cheap example for a run about. Currently have a mk2 Leon cupra and its the least involving car I’ve owned. Steerings WAY lighter than the clios. Kinda have no idea where the limits are

Andrew Yoxall but for not a lot more money you can buy a Mk5 golf gti that handles just as well or better standard, easily mappable to 300bhp with minor mods And you don’t have to keep picking bits up that fall off or sit in an awful interior 👍🏻

They don't rev to 8000 rpm, only if it's been mapped! More like 7500rpm standard and when at the correct temperature.

Price reflects the quality of the interior plastic. But sounds great when you drive one . Best when your at the top end of the rev's

The 182 had brakes that got hot due the closed spoke wheels. They changed the wheels and brakes for 197.

It pulls to the right jue to torck steer with it been a front wheel drive (wrong spelling I know) but it happens on other cars I.e Ford Focus rs

@@pheasantpluckersson2138 why would I be a fanboy ? Renault's cause nothing but pain and empty pockets. Still some of the best handling hatches though and the new Mégane is fastest hothatch round there .
Andrew Yoxall but for not a lot more money you can buy a Mk5 golf gti that handles just as well or better standard, easily mappable to 300bhp with minor mods
And you don’t have to keep picking bits up that fall off or sit in an awful interior 👍🏻
