    Honestly Tiago i mostly agree with you on your takes, however adding $40-50 dollars for a small sound instrument is absolutely insane, I could understand about $10 but this is just completely unjustified

      They've had talking toys for decades. You can buy cheap greeting cards with sound chips. It's not a big deal and no way worth an extra $40.

    • @one4all885
      @one4all885 7 місяців тому +11

      Even $10 for that cheap low quality speaker is too much. If only customers showed how unreasonable this is by not buying this product, Lego would understand people aren't dumb enough to pay for them and would sell a bit more reasonably.
      Too bad though that there are some poor souls that would buy it at this price. They are what keeps allowing Lego to continue to overprice their products. These toys are only as fun as the price you paid for them. The more you spend the more you expect. The less you spend, the lower the expectations and it improves the chance for more fun and appreciation for what you bought.

      That's the problem: you have people who won't put their money where their mouth is. For those who think Lego is overpriced, don't buy Lego, or don't buy the sets you think are unfairly priced. Better yet, support Lego's competitors, who are doing some amazing work these days and releasing sets as good as anything from Lego for, quite often, a lot less money. Also, Lego-sponsored channels like this always hyping Lego products and practices don't help the situation.@@one4all885

      Any time a channel is sponsored by Lego, it automatically calls into question the objectivity of what they're saying since they're getting paid to promote Lego products with video coverage. Lego gives LAN members free sets and early previews, which in turn drive video views, which in turn generate income for the channel owner. Thanks for your effort in making your reviews. However, saying that the price for this set is justified when you got it for free just seems a bit weird to be honest. I appreciate your insights (as a former employee of the company) into what the process is to create a new piece, but you also know that not all production cost of a new part has to be earned back with the first set in which it appears.

    • @TiagoCatarino
      @TiagoCatarino  7 місяців тому +3

    Tiago, my dear. The final price is INSANE and Lego should have been called out on that by you. I get that you have a somewhat special insight into the additional costs of designing the sound brick, having formerly worked for Lego. But in the presumed +50 dollars for the sound brick, Lego surely built in a heavy heavy cut for itself, and the overall price makes this a very expensice one-trick pony, which begs its own from of criticism, I think. I am sorry to say but your reporting on this set is similar to the bunch of unciritical UA-camrs who are paid by Lego to advertise their material, and I for one like to steer clear of these people when there is so many more independent voices available. I get that your relationship with Lego is complex, but I would have liked a bit more critical thought on this.

    One thing to consider is that there are Harry Potter fans that aren't familiar with Lego, and see $100 as an affordable set. Overall, the casual market will see the $50-$100 range and buy it if it looks cool, regardless of PPR. That's how sets like the Bonsai Tree got so popular in the first place.

Especially if you buy them in large quantities. Yes there are license fees but come on Lego. $60 would be more than enough for this thing. I think it will sit on the shelfs forever and will be pushed out on clearance with at least -50% off. Lego will make their cut and the seller loses money. So business as usual I think.

    i love the idea but overall im not a fan, i wouldnt be interested in this set but the price point for the lighthouse still irks me. i get it, it's motorised and has a newly developed lens but since i got it i turned it on maybe 5 times and only for a bit. I would much prefer it be a reasonable price and without the motorised part

    I am a blind person just listening to his speech, but can anyone describe the hat because he only described the building technique and the function and not the appearance.

    • @reelandyreid
      @reelandyreid 7 місяців тому +5

      It is a mostly brown, cone shaped hat with a large brim. It looks worn down and has a saggy face on it. It looks significantly smaller than what the hat would probably look like in real life.

    • @Hsdout
      @Hsdout 7 місяців тому +5

      The brim of the hat sits on a small black stand that has a square tile of each houses emblem. The hats brim has exposed studs and stitching represented through a couple of stickers.
      Overall it’s a dark brown color and together with the pointed hats shape and shiny plastic finish as several commenters pointed out it really does resemble a poop emoji. Only it’s not smiling, it has a frown represented with his slightly opened mouth and his furrowed eyebrows.
      When you make it talk or slightly push the top of the hat without triggering the sound chip, the mouth opens and the eyebrows raise which looks nice. The back of the hat is a bit of a mess since it needs to accommodate for the lever and technic pieces that permit activating the sound module.
      Hope that helps!

    I’m so unimpressed with this one. The brim of the hat is so flat and stiff- they really missed the opportunity for a great floppy brim like something you’d see in a Flemish renaissance painting.
    the four founder’s “items” - what? doesn’t lego have actual tiara pieces? looks so odd next to the molded cup and sword.
    and the price!! $50 for a piece of tech that’s existed for half a century? so confusing, especially because the actual sound bites are so stilted and piecemeal. for that much i’m expecting monologues of lush voice acting

  • @jacobooooo
    @jacobooooo 7 місяців тому +1

    considering how much more tech mario sets pack and how their prices still aren't this high, i think this one is awfully overpriced. it's cool, but 10$ toys pack this kind of tech. with the figure and the build, i think this should've been 70$ at most, though it's still not as outrageous as the hoopty set from marvel,

    • @TiagoCatarino
      @TiagoCatarino  7 місяців тому +1

      That’s actually a great example! The first Mario starter course had 231 pieces for $60 bringing the price per piece ratio to 25 cents a piece, and indeed lots of tech included there.
      Sorting hat comes down to 17 cent a a piece with not that many tech in comparison which kinda makes sense but still is “cheaper” than the Mario.
      Then the Luigi and Peach courses come a few years later and while keeping the price tag of $60, slightly increased their piece counts meaning that while the tech is still there and is still the same, the cost of the technology has been diluted meaning the sets can now have a lot more LEGO going on for it.
      That’s the issue with the sorting hat.
      Being the first of its kind (for LEGO) to use this “new” tech, no matter how anyone sees it and no matter how many times you compare it to other brands or cheap solutions sold by the 10s of millions from Chinese factories, it will still cost a significant amount to produce by LEGO.
      But the more sets that use the technology the lower the cost it will be to produce in the long run.
      The first Mario was the most expensive.
      The first Powered Up sets were probably the most expensive.
      The first “insert LEGO tech here” sets were the most expensive.

    • @jacobooooo
      @jacobooooo 7 місяців тому

      @@TiagoCatarino you’re right, fresh tech always ends up being ridiculously expensive. this tech is really cool so i’m looking forward to lego making use of it in more sets. i think the sorting hat was a great choice for the first one - it’s iconic and i’m pretty sure it’s still gonna sell well despite the the price being hard to swallow. i guess you could say that we’ll watch this brick’s career with great interest.

      @@TiagoCatarinoFor what it's worth - even if all that you're saying here is true, then still if I were Lego's CEO my strategy would be to keep the price on the first product within the realms of sanity (from the consumer's point of view), accept the lower-than-average profit, get people to love the product rather than to feel annoyed by the outrageous prices, and profit more in the long run. Were the Mario products as successful as they could've been?

    • @TiagoCatarino
      @TiagoCatarino  7 місяців тому

      Mario was successful far beyond anyone's expectations. Other tech based themes flopped real hard like Vidyio or Hidden Side. It's always a "gamble" and as such they always need to earn their money outright I think.

    What many of you are not appreciating is the sheer coolness factor of the sound brick in this application. How can they justify charging $50 for the sound brick? Because this set went from a "no thank you, not interested, I don't even like Harry Potter that much" to "Wow, that's pretty neat. I may buy this set now" for me. And I imagine a lot of other buyers will feel the same. Also, $100 is not that much money these days. Especially for Lego. I just filled up my car with gas/petrol today and it was $100. I would much rather spend that $100 on this hat. 😁

    • @Mazzaspazza
      @Mazzaspazza 7 місяців тому +2

      Still $50 for a light brick is just absolutely insane. You can’t justify that by saying that it’s “cool” so it’s fine. Also $100 is a lot of money and saying it’s not that much nowadays feels a bit out of touch imo
