  • What is the best filter for an axolotl tank setup? The catch-22 is you need really good filtration because of the high waste load, but axolotls hate strong currents. So in this video, I discuss:
    ▶ Mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration
    ▶ Axolotl filtration requirements
    ▶ Top 3 axolotl filters
    ▶ Live plants for axolotl tanks

    I like using the hang back filter you mentioned for my axie. The adjustable flow is super helpful. I usually have it on the lowest but when I’m doing a water change or cleaning the sides I bump it up to the highest for a few minutes to catch all the good stuff. Then I turn it back down. It’s a good filter option.
    Also please do more axolotl videos, they fascinate me so much!

    I've been making researches recently, I really want to have an Axolotl (just gotta find some place in my bedroom aha)
    I already have experience with keeping an aquarium since I currently have one with a Betta fish and shrimps. I have lots of Java moss too, it grows crazy.
    This video is really helpful ! Although I have my father who's very good at caring for an aquarium, it's good to get knowledge myself so I know what I'm doing and not just relying on him.
    I was thinking of getting a 20 gallon long tank and an hang-on back filter simply because I don't want the sponge to take too much place and I want it to be easy to clean.
    I love plants too so it's a great idea to add a Pothos plant ! Since I already have tons of Java moss I'm not worried about that, a sand bottom should be good too and it's easier to put plants in.
    I also saw someone making a Bamboo themed setup for their Axolotl, I found it such a great idea and I love bamboo. Wondered how I could do that and if it's a good idea ?
    I'm not sure how much light bamboo would need since I'm thinking of not putting a strong light as to not stress the little cutie

    I'm looking for a sump
    It's basically an oversized canister pump in the shape of a second aquarium beneath your tank, they work wonders for keeping a balanced aquarium since the filter area can be big. As big as you want in fact

  • @victoriapschen

    I use a small canister filter. Flow isn't an issue because I poke a lot of holes in the spray bar, and other modifications can be made to the spray bar so not a lot of flow is created. Canister filters are the best in my opinion. Best filtration and Not much maintenance needed. It also looks nice as it doesn't take much room in or around the tank.

      @GirlTalksFish  6 років тому +3

      Oh The Mirth Thanks for sharing your setup! Yeah I started off with a HOB filter, but ended up upgrading to a canister as my axolotls got bigger and started making a ton more waste. Canister is king. 👑

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 років тому +6

      Great question! What I usually do to see if I have enough filtration is check to see if a) the axolotl is stressed because there's too much water current or b) the water is still pretty dirty and there's not enough filtration or water movement. I usually start with filtration rated for the aquarium size I have (or slightly more powerful) and then you can always increase from there. Hope that helps!

    8+years ago, sponge filter was recommended when I bought my 1st Axolotl. Now in a 50/55gal tank, I have 2 adults(first axolotl included) with 2 sponge filters. My new baby is in a separate tank with a hang over back one. I placed drift wood in the way to help slow down the current. I was looking to add a sponge filter with the new baby as well. But now I’m thinking I should add a “better” one in my 50/55gal too.

      10-30 gallon because you don’t want to stress the axolotl out too much. The lower the water flow, the better.

    I personally use a sponge, but considering adding additional filtration since I realized how messy axos are lol
    May I ask what editing software you use? I really like the style ;)

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  6 років тому +2

      Haha, totally! Which one do you think is messier: axolotls or turtles? I know both require lots of filtration, but do like turtles like higher current than axolotls?
      For editing, I paid for Wondershare Filmora (which Cory from Aquarium Co-Op recommended) and it's been working out really great for me. Maybe one day I'll upgrade, but right now it's perfect for what I do. What do you use for video editing?

    I’ve used HOB and just switched to a sponge. The flow rate with the HOB was always an issue, which is why I switched. I have a 40 gal breeder with 4 juvenile Axolotls until they grow out then they will be divided between 2 40 gal breeders. In the tank I do also have several plants, this far my java fern is holding up nicely as well as most other plants. Really make sure your not getting tropical plants since Axolotls love cold water.
    In my opinion The sponge is much easier to clean, cheaper, easy to set up only thanks to a gamers wife!! my other tank with a HOB is a beast to get in the crevices. However I still have to do weekly water changes because they are incredibly messy. And the sponge is huge so no matter what you use there will be pros and cons. Just have to see what works for the health of your Axolotls!

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 років тому +1

      Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with HOB vs. sponge filters! Yeah, I'm looking forward to making a video about plants that will do ok with axolotls in cold waters - but I gotta do some testing first. :)

Ultimately though, my #1 recommendation would be to make sure you find a local vet who can treat axolotls. If your little one gets sick, it's best to get professional advice from a licensed practitioner who can actually examine and run tests on your axolotl in person. :)

      For axolotls the fluval 407 is kind of a lazy person/wealthier persons go to as we are talking a month between cleaning it if you throw a lil extra carbon in there (in a filter bag ofc) to keep that water clear and have no subtrate so you can hoover up the poop when doing your 10% weekly water change.... If i was you i would really study this month as nothing is worse than getting a pet you are not equipped for (like idiots who buy goldfish and put them in tiny tanks with no filter not realising they need more space than almost every other fish in the world along with major cleaning and filtration and airation) ... Well the axolotl is similar as in its not a simple pet to take care unless you spend alot of money on a really big tank with plenty of live plants established a kick ass filter epic ornaments a specialist heater/cooler to keep it bang on 18°c and only have 1 axol in there. Doing it wrong makes life very hard work in cleaning and worrying and can be quite crewel so im glad you are researching and not just buying one and again if you have the cash a fluval 407 external is simply the best way to go.

    Personally I have a 40 gallon breeder for my 2 axies. It is heavily planted with lost of stem plants including rotala indica and pogostemon erectus, carpeting S Repens, a couple forms of crypt, and a red tiger lotus, a couple pygmy chain swords, and a single amazon sword. The filter I have is a Marineland Penguin 200 with a sponge filter over the intake. I also have swapped the filter cartridges for a bag of ceramic media and a giant filter sponge. I would say this is honestly the easiest tank I own.

      That's awesome to hear!! I totally want to do a heavily planted setup like that. Do you mind if I ask what kind of substrate you're using? @@GirlTalksFish I am using a base layer of extra fine black sand as well as fluval stratum. I found that its small enough that if they do happen to swallow it, they will be fine. It is also very soft so it usually breaks up in their mouth before any adverse affects could happen. The plant growth for the S Repens is slower than it should be though because the lighting is dimmed since they are not too big on bright lights. There's also a trick to it though, I let all the plants sit in the tank and get well rooted with the bright light, fertilizers, and seachem excel for abut 2 weeks so i could make sure everything stayed rooted! What is what looks like gravel on the floor of the tank? Are those pebbles, or just pellets that haven't been eaten or cleaned up yet? If it's gravel or pebbles, they look too big even for adult axies -- they could eat them and get impacted. Not good.

    We had trouble keeping algae out of our axi tank. Is it common to use algae killer in tank water? We had a sponge filter and it seemed like the only way to keep the water clean was to change it out every week. I never tried algae killer in there because I thought it might harm the axolotl. Unfortunately we were devastated as we lost the axi and I think it was because the algae built up. In a different tank (turtle) I just upgraded to a c ascade 1000 canister filter and I cannot believe how clear the water is compared to the aqueon quietflow 20 we upgraded from. It seems that the main benefit of teh canister filter is that you can aim the jets to create circulation which sucks up all the debris from our very large turtle. We have talked about getting another axolotl and using a canister filter instead of a sponge to help keep the water clean and avoid the algae infection. But, I am concerned that the flow of a canister filter would not be a good fit with the axolotl. I watched your video and caught the comment about the flow control using the baffles, but doesn't this negate the main benefit of a canister filter?

Do you think it would be better to have the hang on back or add another sponge? Great video!

    I know this video is a couple years old, I apologize.
    However is you have a canister filter that has a "baffle" like the Marineland Magnaflow 220, which is what I've just acquired. I found that taking a bit of course sponge filter material and placing it between the output tube and the "flaps" that direct the flow helps Act as a baffle without having to sacrifice the look of the tank. I like simple and that sponge helped even out the flow for my tank, leaving enough circulation for the live moss and floating Amazon spear plants I have, but not whipping through the tank with unimaginable speed. Also I run a sponge filter since my 36 gallon tank is a bit taller than a 20 long and the intake for the canister is only about half way down the back right side. The sponge filter is in the back Left corner opposite my canister intake and in direct path with my outlet. The bubbles act as a counter balance and make for a very smooth and gentle tank flow. Currently in the process of cycling it it the first time and all is going well. Temp fluctuates from 64-65 in the AM and 68-69 in the PM. PH at 7.6, ammonia is at 0 ppm, nitrite is at 0 ppm, nitrates are just starting to show but still not enough TO CONSIDER IT "Cycling"

Also i heard about how you can use carbon in the canister filters as well . . .is this bad for the plants in tank ? and can u tell me more about cermic thing we can put in filters

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 років тому

      Great questions! So, I never take the plants out of the tank or clean them (unless it's to remove excess algae with a toothbrush or my fingers). There are two types of plants: rhizome plants that can be tied or super glued to rocks (e.g., anubias and java fern) versus rooted plants that need to be in substrate. For the later type, I just plant them into the substrate (very deeply if the plant will allow it). To prevent the axolotl from digging it up, you can try using plant weights around the base of the plant (amzn.to/2FLP6d3 ) or you can surround the plant with heavy rocks to protect it until the roots get established.

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 років тому

      I usually don't use activated carbon in my filters (unless I'm trying to remove medication or tannins) since they get used up so quickly, but it shouldn't harm your plants. The ceramic rings are biomedia for your filter, great for growing beneficial bacteria that will help convert toxic waste compounds into less dangerous nitrates. Hope that helps!

      Commenting a year later but never use anything with a disposable filter cartridge. The whole point of a filter is to grow beneficial bacteria to keep your tank's ammonia and nitrite under control. Throwing out the cartridge is getting rid of all of your bacteria and is likely to crash your tank's cycle
