Oh, 85 minutes? That's shorter than I thought! I look forward to seeing Presence this week, and like you said, we've definitely been spoiled with great horror these past few months, with 2024 capping it off with Nosferatu. Also, glad to hear that the dialogue for the teenagers is good since, like you said, Hollywood really struggles at writing dialogue for kids and teenagers alike.
Fingers crossed 2025 can keep the momentum going with the horror genre. Very fired up for The Monkey, Companion, Sinners and 28 Years Later.
This is a great video! We've been studying Soderbergh throughout our entire season, and it's so awesome to hear someone talk about him with the knowledge and passion we share. Awesome stuff, James.
Also, The Limey does rule--such a great movie!
Very cool! Just subscribed to you channel. Enjoy the ride through his filmography.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock That's awesome, thank you! Hey, any friend of Schizopolis is a friend of ours : )
Great review, lots of good info and you're not annoying or irritating like So many other reviewers putting on weird voice cadences.
I was already going to go see this on Friday, but now I’m HYPED to go see it!! 🤩 We have something to go see every week for a minute here, and I’m loving it! 😄
Agreed. The next few weeks have a ton of great options. Very excited for Companion and The Monkey.
Soderbergh’s KAFKA is my number one hidden gem that needs a Criterion release. Love that flick.
It's a fantastic but sadly it completely slipped through the cracks at the time of its release.
Super excited for this. Been a fan of Soderbergh for YEARS
Love what you say about Soderbergh & The Camera.
Soderbergh and his camera deliver one helluva a performance. I wonder if he would be eligible for a possible award as an actor since he is responsible for the most important performance in the movie.
I'll definitely be checking it out. I'm a huge Soderbergh fan.
Nice! And the good news is we only have to wait a few weeks before we get another by him. His output is insane.
Saw this at a special q&a screening last week. The ending was disarmingly heartbreaking. The particular room where I sleep in supposedly the previous owner passed away. Had a dream(Nm) the night I saw Presence where my subconscious reworked the ending to give me a very personal fright. Definitely a recommend if you want to see something different.
Agreed. One of those rare horror movies that packs a serious emotional punch.
I will definitely check it out. Great review.
Just wondering if there is a Hancock review for the Mr. Inbetween series?
Sadly Mr. Inbetween is one of my blind spots. I've only seen the first episode but I've been hearing great things for years.
To this day, I prefer Soderbergh‘s Solaris over the first, highly regarded adaptation.
Kept waiting for the review to start but you gave a Sodenberg filmography.
Can't help it. Been a fan for decades. Also going spoiler-free always makes it more challenging to offer an in-depth review.
The first excellent film of 2025! Outstanding performances, especially by actor West Mulholland. We should see more from this young actor!
I always found Soderbergh frustrating. He had a tendency to fill his films with ‘big names’ and it was just like ‘oh here’s Euan mcgregor arguing with Michael douglas, and it swallowed the story. I’m thinking Traffic, Contagion and Haywire. I can see the skill, but there was always a template involved that bummed me out. Remember when he stopped making films and started an online store selling handbags!
I can see your point.
Traffic is a great movie thought
For me it's one of his best movies.
He's definitely threatened retirement one or two times and might have even taken a long hiatus at one point but sooner or later he always get the itch. If you haven't seen 'Sex, Lies and Videotape', 'Out of Sight' or 'The Limey', those are my favorites of his movies.
@ not for many years. I’ll give them another try. Thanks James. Love the channel!
I can't wait to see this!
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
This has been the first film chronologically on my radar for 2025. Looking forward to watching it.
Well worth seeing in the theater. Hopefully 'Companion' and 'The Monkey' will deliver as well.
Soderbergh did both the cinematography AND editing! I suspect that's one of his methods of keeping the costs down.
Chainsaw Reacts is a cool dude so him being mentioned on here was a pleasant surprise!
Might have to check out the livestream. Haven't watched him in a while.
Going live at 9 tonight. Hopefully we'll see you there!
I don't consider this movie "horror". More like family drama with a suggestion of horror. Great camera work I will agree. But I found it quite funny to see in bold print in the trailer "One of the scariest movies you'll see this year".
Your review of Oddity got me to watch a movie I thought looked kinda meh and it was actually really great.
He also got me to go see Oddity … saw it in an empty theater … and it was my fave movie of last year as well as my husband’s! 😃🤘 First movie in a loooong time to make me jump outta my seat. 🤣
Glad to hear it! I hope that movie finds the audience it deserves. I would love to see Damian Mc Carthy getting back to work sooner rather than later.
Soderbergh’s career often reminds me of Alan Parker. Another filmmaker busily creating a large catalog of great movies in multiple genres for many years.
Massive fan of Alan Parker. Throughout high school and college I obsessively watched his movies. I could watch The Commitments every day for the rest of my life.
Have you checked out the recent Oscar nominations video because man, people are so pissed off on Emilia Perez nominated for Best Picture. Is this the case where the Academy is way out of touch with their voting rules and is the Oscars becoming a “Russian Judges” show?
Great great movie! 🍿
I really liked a few Soderbergh films of the past.
He definitely has more than his fair share of great movies to his name.
I genuinely dont think you can really call this a horror film. Its not even a tiny bit "scary". It had some haunting and disturbing ideas, and was beautifully shot , i quite enjoyed it. But don't go see this with the expectation of being scared
You could classify Unsane as a horror movie. That was decent. The band is better though. 😉
I enjoyed Unsane. If memory serves, the whole movie was shot on an iPhone which was a cool gimmick at the time.
I'll watch anything with lucy liu in it!
She's great in this.
Lucy Liu is still gorgeous lol
Agreed!
I watched it Unique Style not my usual Genre. Hate to sound like a dirty old man but they could have made the Shower scene Sexier and more Scary
Soderbergh is an all time great
His output since the late Eighties has been completely insane. One of the most prolific directors of my lifetime.
Stay away! What a terrible movie. Only positives were the acting and dialogue. It has plot holes and no character building. Not enough horror or scares. It's just a big bore.
What plot holes?
David Koepp? is this a good omen for Jurassic World Rebirth then?
Not sure. It seems like his heart is no longer in these big blockbusters. I'm sure the money is great, but I wish he would stick with more personal projects.
This film was not a horror film it was a drama, and there's not one horror scene in it
If i was expecting a drama, then i might have enjoyed this more / not that i like drama movies
Sounds like a Soderbergh retrospective stream / video wouldn't be amiss; a career such as his sees like a wikd ride
He directed LOADS of movies, you need a real commitment to check them all 😅
That's an excellent idea. I tackled his entire career on Wrong Reel a few years ago but he's been very busy since then: wrongreel.com/podcast/the-best-of-steven-soderbergh/
I might see this movie Friday instead of Flight Risk, which is destined to flop and Lionsgate were just gung-ho on the marketing telling fans to see this movie though they didn’t mention Mel Gibson in the trailers.
Why do you think flight risk will flop ?
@ zero marketing, zero A-list stars, Mark Wahlberg isn’t a huge draw anymore, its directed by Mel Gibson (who his reputation has been ruined by his past behavior with his ex-girlfriend), and it’s a Con-Air ripoff. Reviews are coming out today and it’s not looking too good for the opening box office for Flight Risk.
@KadeemG61 oh wow I was wondering about the reviews I remember when Mark was box office gold lol
@@swavezmartin Once Transformers The Last Knight bombed in 2017, Wahlberg’s stock had already been dried up and he somehow do streaming movies like Netflix.
@@KadeemG61 I guess everyone has their time lol
Does it have explicit sexual scenes or themes? Would a 15 year old cringe if seeing with parents? 😂It's rated 15 here in Canada but R in the US
There is intended rape and sex scenes
There's one short sex scene but I can't say whether or not anyone would be embarrassed. I've always enjoyed sex scenes in movies at every stage of my life, lol.
Hard to call this a horror movie, but just my opinion
Hope Black Bag is as good
Same. Trailer definitely grabbed me.
The Blair Witch Project signalled the end of Horror Cinema... it's all been downhill since then.
😂
Funny enough, I hated Blair Witch. Lol. I think the hype was too high maybe … also had seen way too many horror movies by then … but I didn’t find it scary or interesting when I was a teen. I know, I’m in the minority. 😆
For me Blair Witch was good for the first time viewing when it first came out. It was effective if you were down with the atmosphere.
Apart from that I agree, the last 20+ years has mostly been crap for horror (and comedy for that matter).
Well I love watching horror movies from any era from the silent era up through the present day as long as they are good. There are plenty of amazing horror movies since Blair Witch like 'Martyrs' (2008) which will shake up even the most jaded horror enthusiast.
How close minded
Soderbergh is an all time great
