  • This video reacts to the House v. NCAA case decision that replaced scholarship limits with roster caps. Let us know you're thoughts in the comments!!
The House v. NCAA, the leading case, was filed in 2020 by former Arizona State swimmer Grant House and TCU/Oregon basketball player Sedona Prince. House and Prince sued the NCAA for barring name, image and likeness (NIL) payments for athletes prior to 2021-when the NCAA changed its rules to allow NIL (excerpt via www.duanemorri....

This was the last Covid redshirt year I think, so roster sizes will get smaller

I always remember that anthony miller, the WR at Memphis was a walk on. So it can happen where a walk on, makes a big impact.
I I am not an expert on this subject so I really don't know, But I do know i've rarely see football make changes, that dont benefit the big boys. If they are wanting to change something that usually is to their benefit, which usually means it's not a benefit to the G5

If you wanted to be precise..technically we can have walk ons. But you can’t expand your roster past any limit due to walk ons. Now you must have scholarships and walk ons under the limit. Wouldn’t be surprised if G5’s kept walk ons. Especially the MAC. Maybe we even see MAC or new CUSA schools have less scholarships for example so they can keep their athletic department afloat in age of revenue sharing

      You make a compelling point…
How shelling out 105 FB scholarships might effect certain smaller universities

I completely disagree that there are many p4 walk ons who could compete at the g5 level beyond third string level, if even that. For every one of these breakout walk ons, there are entire teams worth of walk ons that never play a crucial snap that isn’t special teams even once they become scholarship players, even if they transfer down. I do think expanding scholarship limits will allow for more g5 teams to profit from the portal, but they likely only get these guys for one season before they bounce back up. Most p4 walk ons who end up with serious playing time after transferring, they went down to FCS to get it.

Your thinking is flawed . 25 years in the NFL building rosters

The kids will suffer somewhat. Currently many school have 85 scholarships filled with 20-40 walk-ons. FCS is at 65 schollies, I believe. The kids that were at the bottom, or last to walk on will be left out. I am sure the P4 left overs will drift down to the G5, and then down to the FCS, on down to the DII and so on. However some kids will not have a slot to get a chance to compete.

I would think that there will be open tryouts and the best 105 make the team. It will add a heightened aspect to training camp and to spring football. I wonder if the last guy who makes the team gets paid as much as everyone else. This concerns me. The NFL practice squad guys make less, way less. I would think the same would happen in college.

Group of 5 schools with money will be able to poach third stringers from big conferences as long as they offer them something competitive. If a group of 5 school is able to maintain its top talent and get new talent then they will be a force to reckon with.
I’m from Fresno and I don’t think we will capitalize. We are afloat because of all the 2-3 star California talent overflow. It looks like we pay for some elite qb play tho

I dont even think it would make sense for a kid to go be 85 through 105 on UGA you never going to play

This situation has to be filtered by full scholarships, partial scholarships, walk-ons with NIL support. Each school will need an accountant to balance caps versus costs.
Generally, a total roster cap will hurt G5/G6 at season end from depth of rosters. I will assume all P2 schools will have 105 full scholarship players, some with NIL packages. P4 schools will have mostly full scholarship players. The mix will be based on when the cap starts.
Can schools have 125 players at the start of Fall Camp and trim to 105 by Game 1?
If yes, then Walk-ons will still be signed. Suppose 95 of the 105 players are full scholarship either from HS or the Transfer Portal. The other 30 players will be weeded out by Game 1 to have 105 full scholarship players.
I can see no scholarship players getting 4 year scholarships. Each will be 1 year with a school option to offer an extension. Schools will now cut players involuntarily much faster than in the past. Players wanted NIL. Now they will get professional player treatment if they get injured or fail to produce. A student athlete’s academic success is no longer a real focus consideration of HCs and Staff. Players move on all the time with the Transfer Portal.
