Creepy 1950s HO Steam Locomotives Found in Box - Train Shop

  • Every few months I usually end up making a trip up to Larkspur line model train store and I was really looking forward to this visit since the store has recently acquired several large lots, most of which is still packed away. The store owner let me look through the boxes and I ended up finding a bunch broken locomotives. The last box I opened was certainly the most interesting as it contained around eight brass locos in various states of completion. The one I was most interested in had all the parts but is in somewhat rough condition giving a bit of an almost creepy look. Despite being made in the 1950s, it was the only locomotive out of everything I bought which actually still ran.

1:09 the chassis with Kato on the tank would be Atlas RS11/RS3. The shell though is Canadian RS18, my guess is maybe someone filled in the number board notches on the Atlas shell, or used a conversion kit.
1:20 the BB SW7 has a Kaslo (could be wrong on the maker) conversion kit with the Canadian number boards on the hood.
2:10 the Lionel GP30 is the Kader-made one that later would be a Bachmann piece.
3:05 the Champion car was made by Cox
4:20 the Rivarossi Hudson looks like it has the wrong tender with it, I see the top of a B&O Vanderbilt from a 2-10-2. If it was cheap I'd have bought the whole thing just for the tender.
5:20 looks like a box of all Varney, I would likely have bought the whole works. The one with the odd motor I think Varney called the V4, with the long snout on it.
The Daylight is the same deal as the GP30. Made by Kader for Lionel. Lionel was famous for having other people make their HO trains, and they contracted with Kader to make some things in the 1970s. When Lionel quit, the items went to Bachmann. I'm not sure the full history but I believe currently Kader owns Bachmann and produces all of their models.
9:10-ish. That's absolutely a Varney. $50 CAD probably isn't bad for what's there, the tenders I have sold for $20-$30 USD alone. It's missing a trailing truck but I'm sure you can find one. The bronze boiler dates it to post-WWII, they sold them through most of the 1950s.
Yes, those early Kader drives are pretty common for zincpest.
The story on the Life-Like is that was a Penn Line shell. Varney got it when they bought out Penn Line in 1964, but only four years later they were bought out by Life-Like and the die-cast things were sold to Bowser. It was sold for at least 25 years as a Life-Like engine, with several drive variations.

Everything in the box with the "Creepy" locomotive is Varney. In the extreme lower right there might be a Mantua shell. Anyway, Varneys of that era sometimes had a "V" cast into the boiler side near the front...where the builders plate normally is. And, yes, that is a Lindsay designed 7 pole Varney super motor.

Very cool Harrison! By the way, that Soo Line F unit A-B set appears to be from an early to mid 2000s run (2003-08 time frame) and were essentially equipped the same drive train as the blue box F units. They were then re released with the JST "quick plug" not long after and were eventually moved down to Athearn's Roundhouse line a couple of years ago and were upgraded with the 21 pin plug and LED lighting. Athearn has also announced matching 3 packs of passenger cars for the current road names offered. As for the CN "Daylight" GS-4, it seems like I've seen one of these before although I can't recall where exactly. I just can't wait till the next live stream when you run that locomotive just so I can see the SP fans blow up the chat typing in all caps "ITS CURSED!!!".😆

When i was a little kid, my dad buys a lot of scale trains to me. It was early 90-s, and the trains was made by German company named "Pico". They were awesome, highly detailed, and very well made... But, because of my age, i've played with it like with simple toys, not like with expensive scale models, and pretty soon all beautiful locomotives, cars and tracks were destroyed by me and my younger brothers. I wish we had stores like that in central EU! In fact I don't think we still have a pure (trains only) store anymore, most I've been at recently had a side business too. The Mediker is 50% LEGO now , one other became a huge RC model distributor, the old store near the eastern station is half the size now (and no longer sales antique books, only antique toys, but it always ben) and the one in the "Allee mall" sales air-soft and self-diffense guns (of all things, beside trains).
People just can't afford train models anymore (not like they ever really could here), and 2nd hand stores, and cheap brands are mostly completely gone.

I'm talking late 70s early 80s during the early part of the General Mills/MPC era, so not much, but the drivers are held together with screws and are physically quartered on the axels which helps. Also, the motor is a part of the chassis, no using a spare Bachman flat motor, an finding a brush holder/cover is nearly impossible, but the Lionel armature is nearly as robust as the Tyco power torque, so if the cover is good and the insulation between the frame halves are good you stand good chance of getting a fair running loco. Good luck, if you like to tinker with them it can be a lot of fun , frustrating, but fun.

Interesting finds for the locomotives. Like many railroads the Southern Pacific called their 4-8-4 locomotives another name instead of the White classification name of "Northern". In the case of the Southern Pacific these were called "General Service" and not "Daylight". Daylight was the name given to the daytime and premier passenger trains instead of the locomotive that hauled them. While GS locomotives with the streamlined casing on the top of the boiler were painted black none of these had the side streamlining panels like this one. There were also other GS classes without any of the streamlining. The Southern Pacific also streamlined and painted some 4-6-2s for the San Joaquin Daylight.

During WW2, Southern Pacific and Western Pacific both painted their GS-4 and GS-6 locos Flat Black, or possibly a semi gloss so as to not reflect any lights while running, to make it harder to see from an enemy ship off the coast. To the best of my knowledge, WP engines were always black, SP painted theirs for the war. Most were repainted after the war. There are only two GS series engines left a GS-4, #4449, and a GS-6, preserved in a park somewhere here in California.

I think you did good on the buys that you got at older diecast type of locomotive that's going to be really neat to get running and painted Etc if you decide to. That daylight Canadian national actually does look really good. Myself I don't have the patience for the older Bachman stuff. Maybe change out the chassis but that's all I would do but they're poor quality follows in suit even in today's things especially when both of my Bachmann ft locomotives will have issues for the drive shaft connector splitting because they think that it's a good idea to have four quality plastic on a metal connection that goes to the worm gear. That's why I like Athearn, Mantua, Atlas, and rivarossi. Rapido and Kato I have yet to try due to their expense someday. I got to get to that store it looks really cool and I could at least spend an entire 2 hours there LOL

@@MattKonsol what about them? Yeah I would actually buy them too as you know me I do not like and will never like the way that Bachmann trains has their stuff that's why when you hear Sam's trains complaining about it it's because obviously there is Major quality issues and the expense that you have to pay is outrageous the only thing I would recommend for somebody is go at a high-end Bachmann Spectrum but if they have the same quality issues as the regular brand then I would still turn my nose at them. Quality versus quantity . That's why Matt I was very picky when I got my car I was specifically very picky to make sure that I had the exact vehicle that I wanted and I did major research on it other than hearing Word of Mouth of how hey Volkswagen diesel operates I was looking at expense Etc. I tell my brother the same thing because he's been asking me about model trains and stuff and I've told him what to look for and what to avoid. Like if I was to get a Hogwarts Express I would go with Hornby because they still produce them and they've made them better. Not to go all long winded

Back in the 80s I had a Bachmann 4-4-0 "Jupiter" model that looked great but ran for shit straight out of the box. The best engine I had was an Athearn switcher engine. The Rio Grande F-body I got in my starter set was from Tyco, and again, it looked decent but didn't really run too well.
Never had the money for the brass engines, but they were sought after because they took paint and weathering really well, and not having plastic bodies, they didn't react to solvents when you needed to clean them up to repaint.

Don't forget the brass contacts inside that need cleaning more often than the wheels. The problem with old Bachmann steam locos is the wheels get loose from the axles and bind up the rods. There is no fix that works because the drive wheels are powered with the side rods connected to one geared axle. Stay away from them unless you want a shelf display.

In my opinion, in the 1970's-80's, I wouldn't have even crossed the street, to buy a Bachmann (Botch-man) locomotive! The first decent steam loco they made, was the Spectrum 2-8-0. But even it had a bad DCC ready board, that could '"fry" a decoder!
Most of Bachmann's older engines, parts are NO longer available for! You're fairly safe buying the newer "DCC Ready" engines, and even some of those, they have discontinued some parts, when they sold out!
