    Iron and Clay Cowpeas are a summer favorite of both deer and deer hunters. Deer hunters love iron and clay cowpeas because they are easy to plant, drought tolerate, grow fast, and provide a great food source throughout the summer. Deer love them because they are a delicious succulent plant filled with taste, protein, and moister.
    Iron and Clay Cowpeas can be grown in most of the country between May and August. I plant them every year in my fall plots and they last until the 1st frost while they draw deer in (sheee...that's my little secret!). I like cowpeas better than soybeans because they grow faster, they re-fork better after being eaten, and they are more drought tolerant. However, deer love soybeans too!
    In this video, I show you how I plant Iron and Clay Cowpeas into my seeded out fall plots from last season. I start by burning down the plots with 41% Glyphosate and then spreading the Cowpeas directly into the weeds. I then come behind that with my harrow and cover them up with dirt...done. This method works really well and is a minimal way to get cowpeas in the ground while cleaning up the weeds in your food plots. I do inoculate my seed but in many case you do not need to. Inoculation is important for many legumes if you are planning on the plants going to full maturity and producing beans or peas. If you are only planting to get them out of the ground a few inches to pull in deer then you don't need to inoculate. They will come up and the deer will eat them so fast that you'll think you did something wrong while planting them.
    I buy my seed and www.seedworldu.... What's nice about this company is that they break down 50lb bags so that hunters can order just a few pounds of seed for their smaller plots. Many guys find success planting cowpeas in their smaller bow plots ahead of bow season and they don't need a 50lb bag. Nothing will draw in deer for bowhunting like Iron and Clay Cowpeas.
    It's not too late to plant some cowpeas this summer or even going into the fall. Get those iron and clay cowpeas in the ground and pull those deer in!
    Please let me know if I can help in any way.

    I followed the instructions on the video and I cannot believe how easy it was to plant the peas. I was done in an hour with one acre. A day after I planted the peas it rained. Two weeks later the plants were 4 to 6 inches tall. Thanks for posting this video!!!!

      Man that’s awesome!!! Your deer are going to love you! It feels a little weird at first planting into weeds but it comes out beautiful in two weeks! They grow so fast that you dont really have to worry about overeating unless you have a very small plot. I just planted 6 acres and getting rain today! Thanks for sharing brother!

      Because roundup kills the weeds that deer don’t eat so that the plants they do eat can flourish.

      It’s not ideal but it works amazingly well. Most foodplot managers don’t live where they hunt so they would have to make two trips before planting where this strategy is done in one day. Knocks it all out in one trip. Thanks for commenting!

    That plot will be dead soon... peas die once they are nipped off by deer. Tried them once and turned down a mowed down plot and did oats 9/21 last year and did oats deer hammered them for 6 weeks until frost.

      @TheHandyHunter  6 років тому +2

      Agreed...I just plant the peas around my bow spots to produce forage for bow hunting. I then will spread oats over the top of them and the deer will press the seed in the soil so I don’t have to disk them in. The peas, if not eaten, will die at first frost as the oats and fall plot are coming through. I plant mid Sept as well. Deer love the oats up to about 8 inches...then they seem to turn to other stuff. Keep in touch and thanks for watching!

      Depends on the size of the plot and deer population. I plant iron clays in rows and cultivate for weed control. Any plot less than 3 acers is a wast of time with iron clays. But they do not die when deer nip the tops.

    • @TheHandyHunter
      @TheHandyHunter  2 роки тому

      They won’t come back if they leave just the stem. If the peas make it to where they “fork” and they eat one side of the fork they will come back. This is where it’s advantageous to plant larger plots because they tend to browse on the leaves and it gives time to get to the fork stage. Hope that helps. Sounds like your deer love them too!

    I have never heard of inoculating pea seed. I have been farming peas for many many many years. Sorry I have just never heard that nor have I ever done that. And we grow some of the most prettiest Peas on this farm that you have ever seen for sale. If you lime and turn your spoiled with a breaking plow from time to time and use a cover crop your soil will be in good condition to grow peas and make pea seed or food however you take it but I'm sorry inoculating peas believe it's just another gimmick to get your money

    • @TheHandyHunter

      Once the bacteria is in the soil you don’t have to innoculant again…your soil obviously has the bacteria if you are growing beautiful peas. For deer hunters…some foodplots have never seen legumes or the bacteria so you have to innoculant 1st time around. I always do it just in case but probably don’t need it because of previous plantings. Sounds like you got some great soil! Keep up the good work…i would love to buy some purple hull peas!

    Bout crapped myself after looking at seed world planting rate of 3-5lbs per 1k sq ft. Thats like 200lb /240 bucks per acre. I’m also from this area and just picked up 1200acre lease in varnville, SC. We’re late but just got our areas picked out, mowed, and tilled. Headed up next weekend to plant. Would you go straight 50lb per acre cow peas or mix with something else?

      Depends on what your goal is. Are you just trying to get something in before send of summer in prep for bow or is this your fall mix? If for bow plots then just use cowpeas alone at 50lb per acre. If planting for fall mix I would wait until Sept and plant cowpeas with other cool season seeds like grains, winter peas etc. the cowpeas will draw them in but will start dying at first frost. Hope that helps! Good luck and have fun!

    I was told that I would have to put an electric fence up or put Milorganite on it to keep deer out of it until it got up. Is that necessary?

    • @TheHandyHunter
      @TheHandyHunter  3 роки тому

      It depends. If it’s a small plot with high deer density you may think you planted it wrong because they’ll eat it as fast as it comes up. If you have a small plot and can do a fence that may help. Otherwise, the bigger the plot the better. Once you get them to the fork stage you are better off...usually about 2 to 3 weeks. After that they grow like crazy. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

      Hard to say…the gap is probably about a 1/4-5/16 in the hopper. You want to sling it with the lowest rpm possible so you dont crack the seed open when the blade hits it. Hi Devon, yep...I sprayed GF and spread the seed in one day! If I’d had enough time I would have harrowed in that day as well. I got up early the next morning and harrowed it in. I’ve always done it this way and it saves a lot of time and produces a beautiful foodplot. I just let my GF dry first and then spread the seed. Nothing wrong with doing this work over a few days but if you are in a crunch you can definitely do it all at once. The nice thing is that the GF will slowly kill the weeds as your peas take over and smother out the weeds. Good luck with your plots. I’ve got to get busy on mine!

    • @TheHandyHunter
      @TheHandyHunter  4 роки тому

      It depends on how large your plot is. I usually plant a couple acres. It helps to plant right before a rain so they pop quickly and get to the Y stage so when a deer nips off a stem the plant keeps growing. Once they are up they grow fast and hard for deer to keep up with a decent sized plot. Hope that helps.

      Douglas Renaud Hi Doug, I only harrowed once and I don’t use any fertilizer. You could fertilize them but the summer weeds also love that fertilizer! I try to keep it low cost and it works. I have a feeling the deer may not let them get big enough to mature...which is fine! They are easy to plant...they are very forgiving. Put the seed on the ground and cover them with a little dirt and kaboom! Let me know if I can help. Good luck planting that candy! Thanks for watching!
