In terms of photos I didn't use any presets if that's what you meant, again I hand graded every single photo. I did make a preset pack (link in the description) from the hundreds of photos I have been grading since I started the channel 👍

    Great video, sir, and those shots - particularly the long exposures - are amazing. The foamy stuff, btw, are left by spittlebugs after they feed on the plant sap (I used to think people had been gobbing on the plants.)
    Users really are spoilt for choice these days - Vivo or Xiaomi seem to be neck and neck with Huawei hampered by the lack of a global unit. I was wondering if you'd experienced any shutter lag, as I have a chance of picking up a cheap second hand 13U and I'd heard it was an issue.

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  6 днів тому +1

      Hey thanks for the kind words 😊 and thanks for the info, I'll be going to bed that little bit more intelligent tonight 😅 Xiaomi to me has the edge against the Vivo (purely based off a lot of raws I downloaded and studied before buying the 14 ultra) the Huawei apart from not being a global release and not having Google services (which to me is a straight write off anyway) relies purely on sensor crops for its telephoto and I'm not a big fan at all of that technique. You just can't beat physics and a sensor crop zoom just doesn't replace a real dedicated focal length in terms of optics, bokeh, and compression.
      Now for shutter delay, i have noticed it happening only in auto mode when turning on all computational cr*p HDR and filters. In pro manual mode its all shutter depending obviously.

      😂 it's funny how people perceived mobile phones when it comes to photography ! If I was to rock up to a wedding with my Xiaomi to record the video they would burn me on a stake and yet it can (albeit if rooted) shoot RAW 14bit ! Not something many mirrorless can do lol if I said in the video the b-roll was shot on an alpha camera im pretty sure everyone would have believed me lol shooting 10bit LOG straight out of the phone is just unreal especially when you combine it with the 1 inch sensor and the variable aperture !

    Awesome video! Quick question, do you process your macro shots or are they free from fringing and focus falloff in camera? Impressive to say the least and camera features nowhere near the S24 Ultra.

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  2 дні тому

      Thank you, I definitely wouldn't put the S24U in the same league 😅 the Samsung is an ok allrounder for the average user but because of terrible set of sensors / lenses / software it just can't compete as a photographers device. In terms of macro, they're all shot in RAW and edited afterwards. Not gonna lie it's pretty hard to find the sweet spot when it comes to depth of field as it is very shallow. No defringing is done in post though, just the usual cropping / masking / sharpening and grading.

    Try Vivo X100 Ultra and you will be amazed. I could not take the risk of fog in lens and first I regreated that I did give upp the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, but now I really like my Vivo and I do not miss my Nikon D500 at all.

      I guess it's the same with anything, the minority of people having issues will be very vocal about it, I'm sure there are millions of people who are absolutely fine with no fogging of the lens. Pretty happy with the Xiaomi and the ability to have the photography kit with perfectly matching case and grip and the ability to use filters is just 👌the icing on the cake for me is the variable aperture, such an amazingly useful feature, and lets not forget to mention the awesome star flare that only a variable aperture can give you... Beautiful 😉

    • @UpsideLens

      Thank you 😊 I won't sadly, since the phones I use are my daily drivers I couldn't live with a phone that doesn't natively support Google services or don't have global releases. Great contents as always, Seb!
    This video proves once again that the most important thing is not the camera but the person behind it!
    Couple of things:
    1) It would be so useful if you could hint somewhere in the corner which device you are shooting with (Xiaomi? GoPro? Any other device?)
    2) In the beginning the exposure jumps up and down, weird))
    3) Missing the shutter button?
    4) Missing the Xperia Camera UI?

      I did think about it but thought it was obvious which was which... All the good quality video is from the Xiaomi and the rest is the crappy action cam 😅 I did say towards the end of the video that when it comes to video all b-roll and head talking shots where taken on the Xiaomi using mcpro24fps 10bit LOG
      In regards to jumping exposure, when filming on location and I'm doing vlog style the camera has to be in auto to compensate for lighting changes. Any vlogger will have their camera set to auto for those type of shots. All b-roll however was set and locked in manual.
      Shutter button, I mean yes and no, I do have the Xiaomi camera grip but havent used it much in this video. I have also recorded another video (will be out in the next couple of weeks) doing some street photography and I used the grip pretty much entirely.
      Xperia camera UI (the real one, not the new abomination) was great, but I'm slowly getting used to the Xiaomi UI which is "OK". Having said that yesterday I got to test out the Xperia 1 VI for half a day (also a video in the work) and god that UI is atrocious ! As much as I loved the Xperia 1 V the VI is trash !!!

      Thank you really appreciate 🙏 if you look back a couple of videos I had a whole video about Xperia 1 V vs the Xiaomi 🙂 in regards to the Vivo I don't intend on buying it. Much more restricted in terms of 3rd party app potential (lacks support for raw video / 30fps raw burst mode...) and the hardware is still better on the Xiaomi side. 👍

      Yes Vivo lacks in terms of video, also don't have 4k120 as Xiaomi, but in terms of photography it is really close, maybe even better in some cases, even if it have older 1inch sensor. I had both but returned it because I want to try new Xperia which is still on the way, but I assume that I will end with 14Ultra or x100 Pro, and now in my country it is for even same price both are under 1050€ or you can get 14 Ultra bunde with photography kit and wireless charger for 1199€ which is really good price compared to MSRP...

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  4 дні тому +1

      Can't say I've had issues with the autofocus on the 14 Ultra. The only thing I can think of is because the main sensor is much bigger than the Xperia ones, you really have to adjust your focus specifically on the part you want to be sharp, it's due to how shallow the depth of field is on the main sensor. The Xperia is more forgiving in that sense due to the small main sensor. If shooting moving subjects I'd highly recommend the xiaomi grip (photography kit grip) which enables continuous focus tracking allowing for pin sharp photos too 👍

    GCam for Xiaomi 14 Ultra is supposedly better than the stock camera app, but I am happy with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Do you shoot in RAW? And what is the difference between RAW and Ultra RAW? What about 50MP?

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  5 днів тому +1

      I don't use gcam, can't stand it. I only shoot RAW (portrait shot and B&W shot weren't shot in RAW obviously as it's only jpg). I shoot RAW because all photos are then edited by myself in Lightroom.
      Ultra RAW adds extra processing which you definitely want to avoid at all cost. 50mp is great for macro shots otherwise more often than not AND if lighting is less than perfect results will be mushy unless using both RAW and 50mp on the main sensor

    Can you confirm the reported half a second shutter delay? Something similar is happening on Samsung phones where the image is taken half a second after pressing the shutter button. Pixel and iphone for example are instant

    • @spaceshipearth356
      @spaceshipearth356 6 днів тому

      There is no half a second delay. Maybe slow shutter speed can distort your perception, but I am able to take many pictures in 3 seconds. I have just taken 18 photos just to test it. Pro mode, manual tapping, no burst mode. When I am outdoor and shooting bugs (pun intended), I always take many pictures to be able to select couple usable ones (in windy conditions).

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  6 днів тому +1

      Reports of half a second shutter delay ??? This phone would have ended up in the waterfall if that was the case 😂 what can be sometimes perceived as "delay" is depending on settings used. If shooting in low light and left on full auto the ISP may compensate by slowing down the shutter speed which is what the delay you might be on about, but half a second though ? No way, not unless it was set as 0.5s shutter speed for long exposure ! When you say they're instant, it's not totally correct, if taking a photo in the dark somehow the camera has to compensate for the lack of light by increasing ISO and if that's not enough it will also slow the shutter speed sometimes as slow as a few seconds, so not quite instant.

      Well that really wasn't the case at all for mine, not once in the whole month I've used it. I also heard people complaining about fogging up of the lenses and other horror stories, it's just like any other device, the minority who has problems will be very vocal about it, the rest who have a normal experience just don't go raving about it if that makes sense. Same with any other electricals, small fraction of users might have issues but the vast majority dont

      @UpsideLens  4 дні тому

      I'll be honest I don't use any sort of digital zoom, I only shoot RAW with native focal lengths because for photography I need the best a sensor can give me. In terms of lens flare it's very subtle but one massive advantage the Xiaomi has over your oppo is the variable aperture on the main sensor ! Not only can you control the level of depth of field as well as the amount of light that hits the sensor (especially handy in low light) but it also gives you that typical star like lens effect when shooting bright lights just like you would get on a regular camera with regular lenses. Again that's thanks to the variable aperture blades.

      @@UpsideLens Really? why would you say that? I think they even got the same main sensor

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  2 дні тому

      They do indeed have the exact same sensors as last year (which in itself is not a great move ! ) but to accommodate for the macro mode they've had to alter the zoom lens design slightly and that makes for worse telephoto results. Long range detail is very mushy and over processed (even in raw) the main sensor is ok, again same as last year, but dynamic range has not improved, UI is terrible and buggy (had few glitches and even a crash whilst shooting) macro mode is very poor in terms of usability (very poor stabilisation at such a long zoom range is unacceptable) but because there's no way to shoot macro raw you're left with fried over sharpened and artefacty results.
      Portrait mode was good but very hit and miss when using telephoto module in anything but perfect lighting. The worst offender really is the UI of the new camera app tho where menus are just all over the place and design choices counter productive and ultimately cost me the ability to take shots I would have definitely been able to take with the V's photo pro app !

      The pixel 8 pro does a lot of good stuff for average users, they can take quick clean snaps without having to worry about the outcome. For actual photography it just cannot compete either, small sensors and older tech. To me at this current time, there isn't anything better all around than the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. 1 inch sensor full variable aperture, photography kit with grip and filter mount, stunning 3.2x fixed zoom with fast aperture, 50MP+RAW on main sensor, awesome macro abilities... The list goes on and on.

  • @matthewhartman7176
    @matthewhartman7176 6 днів тому

    I think there's a threshold between sharp and too sharp. Keeping in mind I'm coming from a cinematography viewpoint, which doesn't always translate to photography. Granted.
    That said, you take nice shots in terms of composition/framing, narrative, leading line, texture, etc. But in a lot of them, they look and feel too sharp, too crisp, therefore a bit clinical or digital. They're missing richness, weight, and pleasing edge rolloff. Presence.
    I think folks mistake edge sharpness for detail. Detail is defined by how light and shadow intersect. Detail is more about texture.
    What I can say about this camera/phone is it's enabled to capture a wider dynamic range than most competitor brands. This has more to do with the sensor tech Xiaomi purchased off the shelf than anything Xiaomi did on their part. This is true for all cameras, whether in a phone or dedicated, unless a particular OEM is manufacturing their own in-house chips. If not, you have Sony or Samsung semiconductor to thank, and Xiaomi for the courage in exposing more of Sony/Samsung RAW sensor to the user. Probably doesn't make the camera divisions of Sony or Samsung too happy.

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  6 днів тому +1

      Appreciate the feedback 👍 the joys of making UA-cam content is that original output goes through so many layers of compression that I find myself having to crank up that detail / sharpness which indeed gives off that "crispiness" look. The raw files off the 1 inch LYT900 sensor are much softer and more pleasing in reality. I'll keep that in mind for future videos for sure. As a matter of fact if you look at all the b-roll I shot I tried to go the other way and keep everything as clean and smooth as possible.
      I could have gone a step further and recorded all the b-roll in RAW video but I would have had to carry an insane amount of power banks and hard drives 😂 so 10bit LOG had to do.
      I absolutely agree that the hardware indeed does come from Sony (which is an absolute shame on Sony's part for not using their own top of the range sensors in their own devices...) but manufacturer still has to make some tough decisions in regards to what goes where and believe it or not other phone manufacturers get it wrong (to me anyway) look at Huawei... Relying on one single telephoto lens and then use sensor crop for all of it ls range... 😬 (Let's not talk about iPhones or Samsung's they're just out the league here)
      Anyway thanks mate for your input and once again something to think about for future videos 😉
