Also, my sweet guinea pig boy had bald spots on the sides, but no parasites nor skin problems or allergies, he scratched it a lot and the reason was that he had polycystic kidneys - it was most likely inherited and lead to kidney failure, as the cysts, as they grew bigger, gradually limited the blood supply to his kidneys and one of kidneys was already shrunken at the end - I had to PTS him, but he was in final stage of kidney failure that day. My heart is broken but he is in peace now, with no pain..

Wish i lived near the LAGPR and always make an appointment for my Baby piggy angels there. So i'm sure that they can get a good treatment always and right medication. So many claimed to be exotic vets but doesnt know anything about Guinea pigs. More power Saskia, Scotty and LAGPR Team. How i pray there are more people like you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks for the information on hormone shots. My girls had bilateral cystic ovary disease. I had them spayed and now I just have males since I didn't want females because of cystic ovary disease. This disease could be caused by soy since 80% of females contract this condition. Hope Maureen gets well soon! ❤
What a coincidence. My little girl has crusty nipples and lost hair on her lower half. I just came in here thinking it’s Saturday and I’d make it to the live feed, then i remembered it’s Sunday but i found the video.

Hi Saskia, I apreciate your info. At the moment I have one female, that has exactly this problem. You provide great info, but in our case the vet and I ceased the treatment, after 3 hormonal injections because it doesn't help on the long term. I already lost two pigs on this particular problem. One by operation (removal of the female parts) and another because she couldn't eat because of the swelling, after getting several hormonal injections. What I wanna say is, this is a very difficult problem to handle and almost always not curable. You just buy some time, if you are luckey. Paws from my girls Silke and Sady!

Thank you so much for the information, but one question, with skinny pigs, as they have no hair, do you look for all the other symptoms you addressed ?? Also, that you for addressing the soy. When you first brought up in a live, I switched out my pellets to no soy pellets. The thing is, you have to read labels on any treats, even if they say natural, they contain a lot of soy! Such an eye opener when you read labels and not take it for granted. This is so important as i am not spaying Harriet and i want her to stay healthy and not have any female issues as she grows older.
Bulgy sides can be a sign as well as the crusty nipples

Too much soy can't be good for boars, either! I feed my piggies Oxbow Garden Select. They don't like it as much as the regular pellets, but I want them to be healthy.

Snap I wish I knew this awhile ago our Guinea pig was older and the vet told me to remove their ovaries and it killed her the day after treatment:(
I'm always learning from your experiences. I have three older girls and they all have symptoms of ovarian cysts but the recommendation was to spay them, since they're old I didn't choose to do that. How can I ask my very the possibility of doing these hormones shots? What hormone is the one they need to reach a healthy balance? I'm in Mexico. Thanks a lot, I admire you and I'm grateful for your selfishness when you share new information. By the way, I feed garden select pellets, by oxbow, do they have a lot of soy? My piggies have shown excess of calcium in their diet but I swear I always avoid known veggies with high calcium content.
Cystorelin is the name honey- you have to ask the vet for it.
In most cases it will fix the problem though it may need a repeat sifter a while if symptoms reappear but that is rare

The phytoestrogens in soy could definitely be an issue for an animal of that size, but to be clear: a human would have to eat such an absurdly large amount of soy for it to have any effect on us. Phytoestrogens are really a non-issue for human beings, regardless of the scaremongering you can find online.
