Seeing the first 10 minutes of the video is very reassuring to me as an artist who's just starting their journey on the professional scene. I often struggle with the initial set up, and help myself with 3d models to get the composition down, but I tend to feel quite self conscious when I use them! There's this voice telling me that "a real pro wouldn't need that", so seeing someone I aspire to be one day using them is very reassuring. It's a great reminder that these are just tools like any other and no artist should feel self conscious about using everything in their arsenal :) Lovely splash art as always!
I know some people think they're crutches, but anything that can help you achieve your goal can be good. Not everyone can visualize a scene and nail their perspective on the first drawing, 3d help you play around and find a good angle. The whole "cheating" mentality is stupid. Even old masters planned a piece for weeks, drew multiple angles and had people pose for them. We're lucky we can do all that in a computer. And best of all, if that feels enjoyable and easier for you, go for it. Never be ashamed of what you use to finish a piece.
the dude is gonna spend like 40-80+ hours on a piece, I think he needs all the good base he can get he can grind his 3D form study on his own and not tight deadline client work
The end result matters the most, so the method used doesn't really matter may it be sketch, 3D models etc which ever method yields you the best result is the right way
Its totally part of the process! Why spend countless hours trying to eyeball the perfect perspective when you can just do it in 3D in a few hours. Its all about working smart and fast especially these days when high quality is required. What I recommend though is to still try mastering how perspective works. I can do this even without any 3D if I wanted to. It really makes a difference to be familiar with the basics. 😊
@@idkwayta1722 Yup! We are literally given 5 weeks to do these so I spend the first 3 weeks to really explore and figure out what works best. I show the client multiple versions they can choose from each week. This usually results in a better artwork in the end. :)
I'm so glad you did this splash. You're one of the very few Riot artists out there that posts drawing timelapses, it is so good to learn from your process as a relatively new artist :D
the one who did aphelios base splashart and another who did qiyanas base splash also do it. It's so fun to see how they each take different approaches to get it right. Qiyanas using and making photos with his wife, Aphelioses just using his anime powers xD and this one using 3D models.
I don't know why but his channel is gone from my subscriptions and I can't find it manually either rn .__. which is really sad because he was very interactive and even allowed people to send him their art and he'd talk about what he thinks turned out well and what could be improved. So instead I give you Zeronis aka Paul Kwon who did most of the spirit blossom designs and all the tiny versions for the event as well as KDA Akali. I remember someone on Twitter asking one of the Riot Artists how long a particular piece took and the Artist said a couple weeks or something, it was a while back since I saw it but it gave me so much reassurance that I can take my time on a piece, because professionals do it too.
@@theblackcatgirl7013 a couple weeks doesnt mean anything, they could have worked a total 4 hours a week, so lets say two weeks, so 8 hours on this. my 12 + hours do not compare anywhere to these professionals... i wonder if ill even get to this skill in my art... and everyone is hush about how long it takes them and their secrets

They obviously do put in a lot of time in one piece and it really did make me feel better even if "A Couple Weeks" doesn't say much. 3D renderers are the mordern, cheaper and more versatile equivalent of hiring a model to pose for you. There is absolutely no reason not to use those tools for such a large and commercial project.
Exactly! Its the same concept. I also have some action figures i can pose if ever im lazy to use 3D. I also take lots of selfies before starting to really help me get the feel. Its a trial and error thing to find what works best. :)
@@stinkymcgee778 Blender - Can do anything and has more control, but it is also more technical. DazStudio - I heard lots of professionals use this for posing. Especially for realistic concept art. Clip Studio Paint - There is a pretty useful built-in 3D engine with base characters and some scenes for posing and a model hub that allows sharing models.
Only amateurs say that to make themselves feel less insecure about their inexperience. A professional knows the fundamentals well enough to draw any pose from any composition. They have built an extensive visual library in their mind to aid them as well. What are you gonna do if you are in front of a client and they ask if you can draw a quick sketch in a difficult composition? Wait, let me booth up my PC, wait for everything to load in, start software up, look for 3D models and then after 24 hours show them what you had in mind, when you could've done that in 10 minutes?
How someone is able to produce art like this is absolutely _insane_ to me, and I've been doing art a while. It's really stunning. Thank you for sharing your process! It's interesting and very inspiring.
As someone who’s super self conscious about the amount of time I put in a render and also wants to work in the industry some day, this just really makes me feel lighter about it, looks absolutely gorgeous and this must’ve take so long!
Tre transition from a line drawing to a painting is something that always gets me. It looks like magic to me. I still can't figure out how that works, but it's fun to watch.

This is the first time I've watched the artist's time lapse of the creation of splash art, and I gotta say, holy shit. Like this is a time lapse that is still an hour and a half! The amount of dedication is astonishing! I find it really cool how when I see the skin in-game, I can go "I got to watch this be made!" Also, I bet the file size for this has to be pretty impressive lol
as an ‘artist’ who only draws on occasion but still wants to someday do graphic design myself, it makes me really happy to see that the little approaches and tactics i use are also being used by a professional in a not so different way than me the dedication put into these splash arts is incredible, there are so many details you won’t notice when just scrolling through a champions skins but when you’re looking at one artwork for a couple minutes you can really admire them

I know nothing about art and haven't played League in quite a few years, but this video is so fascinating. It's no wonder these splash arts are so effective, you can spend 15 minutes just admiring all the small details of it... but that's because you spent 15 hours adding them all. I'm glad this video exists because these types of drawings are so detailed and overall beautiful that sometimes I find it hard just to imagine the process, everything is just so well balanced against everything else that it's difficult to think about what comes first and what comes next while it's being drawn. It's also insane to see how, near the end, the illustration seems to keep getting getting more and more perfect, it's really beautiful.

honestly these kinds of videos give me the inspiration to keep going as a digital artist. whenever i even try to draw a pose i just scrap it or delete it just because the proportions weren’t right or the stance was too bland but just seeing how a few scribbles and time can transform into something amazing with just enough patience, motivation, and willingness to learn!

You did a wonderful job! Watching the initial creative process I could see myself a lot, I usually get frustrated quickly, but the way you persisted and used all the tools available was really inspiring!
One can learn a lot by watching these videos. For example: the use of negative/positive space. Notice that on your right side of the painting there is one uninterrupted negative space, whereas the left you have lots of activity that creates interesting, organic, very flowy spaces. That forces the eye to look at the left of the illustration, where the cake, the doll and the character are all interacting. Next, look ath the main character (Gwen?) and compare how she is rendered to how the cake and the floating doll are rendered. The artist makes more enfasis on the volumes and folds of the dress and hair to direct your eye to look at Gwen's happy face. Really love these splash art speedpaints.
Your work inspired me a lot. Especially the combination of technique between 3D and 2D to enhance your workflow. I always questioned myself about using 3D to improve my working experiences because I was taught when in uni was "using 3D is cheating and you will never be a good artist for that". When seeing you done such things, I have some confidences for using 3D in my workflow now.

Just by the first two minutes, you taught me to always come up with multiple drafts before finalizing with the one you like. Ofc, I always go with the first draft, but sometimes redrawing it from different perspectives or diff poses may generate better ideas!

I used to be more carefree but I learned that it is more important to sketch out things properly especially for client work. This way, the client knows exactly what they will get early on and it saves time and reduces unnecessary revisions. :)

Yup it is just a guide. Sometimes, i jist take photos of myself or my wife, sometimes only 3D, but most of the time, I do both and try to figure out what looks best.

It's oddly comforting seeing someone else using 3d models, because I always felt like it was cheating but now I see that's it's just. Common sense - 'work better not harder' or something like that.

Usually around 1 gig. Thats the reason splash art is on another level. Its just takes so much time and effort.

I main Gwen and this is by far my favorite skin of hers, maybe even my favorite skin in the game! when this video was reccomended to me on yt, my jaw dropped. You are a very skilled artist and should be very proud of your work! Im amazed! I like to draw and what not too, but I can only dream of being this talented!
Man im happy to feel relieved seeing this because ive also modeled everything in 3d and painting in 2D and that I thought it was not a process to be taken by other artists lightly. Im more motivated to hone both of my skills now together. Thank you for this

I remember when the first nocturne spotlight came out and they released a speed painting feature. I was in awe of the talent and creativity, downloaded the client and never looked back. honestly these kinds of videos give me the inspiration to keep going as a digital artist. whenever i even try to draw a pose i just scrap it or delete it just because the proportions weren’t right or the stance was too bland but just seeing how a few scribbles and time can transform into something amazing with just enough patience, motivation, and willingness to learn!
I baffles my mind that a single human being can make such beautiful, detailed, and exquisite art, it’s just crazy, this is god tier art ❤️

You did a wonderful job! Watching the initial creative process I could see myself a lot, I usually get frustrated quickly, but the way you persisted and used all the tools available was really inspiring!
One can learn a lot by watching these videos. For example: the use of negative/positive space. Notice that on your right side of the painting there is one uninterrupted negative space, whereas the left you have lots of activity that creates interesting, organic, very flowy spaces. That forces the eye to look at the left of the illustration, where the cake, the doll and the character are all interacting. Next, look ath the main character (Gwen?) and compare how she is rendered to how the cake and the floating doll are rendered. The artist makes more enfasis on the volumes and folds of the dress and hair to direct your eye to look at Gwen's happy face.

Your work inspired me a lot. Especially the combination of technique between 3D and 2D to enhance your workflow. I always questioned myself about using 3D to improve my working experiences because I was taught when in uni was "using 3D is cheating and you will never be a good artist for that". When seeing you done such things, I have some confidences for using 3D in my workflow now.
When I was seeing 3D renderer opened, I knew that this vid going serious lol. Props to you for the amount of effort put into it

Just by the first two minutes, you taught me to always come up with multiple drafts before finalizing with the one you like. Ofc, I always go with the first draft, but sometimes redrawing it from different perspectives or diff poses may generate better ideas!

I used to be more carefree but I learned that it is more important to sketch out things properly especially for client work. This way, the client knows exactly what they will get early on and it saves time and reduces unnecessary revisions. :)

Yup it is just a guide. Sometimes, i jist take photos of myself or my wife, sometimes only 3D, but most of the time, I do both and try to figure out what looks best.
