- League of Legends is one of the most popular video games in the world. While the game is played using small 3D models of characters, Riot Games invests a lot of time and effort into creating detailed 'Splash Art' and lore for its characters so that players can fully immerse themselves in the world of League of Legends. Insider's Harry Kersh spoke to Chengwei Pan, a Senior Illustrator at Riot Games, to find out how he brings League of Legends Champions to life.

"can you draw me" oooh he went there
I was like "oOf wrong move pal"
WHEN I HEARD THAT I -
Don't say it... Do not say it...
He said it.
As an artist, I cringed so hard when he asked if he could draw him.
Yes
Same lmao
He did ask nicely though, still cringy but yeah i had people audibly laugh when i told them i took comissions.
Exactly! Everyone asks me to draw him/her.
Not an artist but I agree!!! To me, it comes off as a little narcissistic to ask for a drawing of yourself..
when his art looks Perfect even when it's flipped
Me as a smaller artist: *HM yEs sAtiSfacTion*
Yes! I was just staring at it in awe
God I hate when everything looks great until you flip it and then it's like you have this disproportionate monster looking back at you wondering what it did to deserve its existence. Well, assuming you didn't mess up on the eyes too. xD
know that feel bro
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHhaahahahahaaaaaa man same me, I was like wtf did he just flip the picture and I didn't notice any bullshit ????
Always zoom out
His facial expression when the host asked for him to draw for free was too relatable
It definitely wasn't for free lmao. He probably got paid for this interview by either Riot or Insider.
@@tanmaykumar4561 yes like if you interviewed a chef and were like "hey at the end of the interview could you make me a delicious meal? I paid you for the interview" Or what about a movie director "hey could you direct my movie idea because I paid you for this 10 minute interview?"
@@jduyker The work isn't seperate but part of the interview. So that movie director will turn you down if your movie idea will take more than 10 minutes of his time
@@tanmaykumar4561 wow you're objectively wrong. The interview money buys you the interview, that's it. It's not like you get more if it's easy for them to do it or doesn't take time.
@@pascalsimioli6777 maybe let the interviewee decide?
The artwork of League of Legends is beyond incredible, I hate it when people generalise the game as trash and overlook all the amazing artwork. Splash arts/illustrations and cinematics are all some of League of Legends most under appreciated elements, the game itself has nothing on all the creativity and skill that goes into it.
Music team is awesome too
Don't forget the music and cinematics
Lore crying rn.
The more you hate leauge the more you love it
True actually, I really love the art team and music team. And the team who creates ablities ,like that's creative.
The artwork for the champions are just amazing, props to the artists
I have fingers
i have toes
Your tick is clever
Riot Games artists helped re-inspire me to start drawing again after being on and off with it over the few years. I've stuck to it this time and I've improved a lot. The me from a few years ago wouldnt've believed that I would reach the level of skill I have now. I've realised that talent isn't what makes a good artist. It's dedication. I have huge respect for the artists.
the one exception to this rule is qiyana
"how about a drawing challenge?"
:^)
"You have to draw me"
>:^(
All the production of content is covered in this video interview so this aok!
@____________________ Well I don't play the pc version anymore but I play the mobile version wild rift.
@____________________ Well I still enjoy the game and I'm playing in moderation, so I don't see the reason why i should quit
@____________________ Sometimes, but I still like enjoy the game regardless.
he did all that for basically a proof of concept drawing??? that composition and lighting better than my finished drawing
Not a concept drawing. He's creating compositional pieces. Not nearly enough to be a finished piece, just enough to show the complete composition. Several will be made and one will be greenlit to be made into the characters final splash art, which can take up to a month to complete.
rawr Oh damn so splash color pieces like this take a long time huh? My heart almost sunk because I thought those because were complete like, within a day/week or so.
@@jolie1206 Nope some can take a week up to a few months depending on the scale and the amount of detail
Brainstorming the idea and composition for the painting is often the most challenging part. Rendering does take long time but it is mostly repetitive
The thumbnails are necessary when making compositional pieces, especially if you're hired for the job - the idea you like the most may not be the one your employer likes most. I assume greenlit phase would be about showing the employer your basic ideas and only after one of them is picked you'd start actually rending it. Saves time and sanity
Chengwei Pan is frickin amazing, Jesus Christ. In fact, all the Riot artists are. Their splash arts are some of the most beautiful art pieces I've ever seen. The level of quality and detail required in each one is insane.
And there's old lollipoppy
@@yuhan4469 sorceress lux is outdated too
@@yuhan4469 It is the true masterpiece.
@@moca7949 they had a new splash art for sorceress Lux, tho in wild rift. Its really pretty
@@nenengafrianti619 ik I just wish it was also in the pc ver
The Artist do a lot of work and their work goes unnoticed they should be praised and recognized more.
??? Everyone in the league community does
he meant the general public
:)) ok
They do get noticed though. Many people appreciate the art of LOL even though they don't know the artist. It makes sense because Riot doesn't have to give credit because they own the right for that artwork. The good news is, Riot knows that many people appreciate those illustrators splash art that's why they keep on hiring them.
@@esimisola8321 True Man
"can you draw me?"
"sure"
*starts drawing a cockroach*
Lol thats a nice roast
Interviewer: "As a challenge... I would like you to.... draw me. In the League of Legends style."
Artist: "OH. HAHAHA-"
Interviewer: "As a hero. With a sword. A good guy. A good guy hero with a sword please."
Rlly couldn't help but cringe at that one, every artist is tired of hearing about it already.
I hope he got paid at least

dont worry im pretty sure he was paid after the interview
just a quick drawing in an interview, relax
Can Insider have a Video about How League of Legends / Riot gameS make their Music!
Luxanna riot made their own video
Yah I already watched it! Its just satisfying to see their effort being Acknowledged by more people :))))
We need to exaggerate the *S* now in riot games proud gamers. Lol
omg yes I couldn't agree more to that
I would prefer how Riot 200 years balance their game
Over 1000 layers for an illustration!? This coworker is insane.
Maybe it's because there are a lot of characters on that illustration
@@yonnah6477 Maybe, but 1000? I get that their job probably comes with a lot of changes they have to incorporate, so having the layers to make those minor changes in size, shape, etc. is good. But goddamn that's gotta be a nightmare to navigate! haha
I used to do that a lot, its kinda like when you save every 10 minutes in a game because you're scared to do something wrong lol
@@ShinyFood Either that or you're actually scared that it might crash and lose unsaved work
Stanfordz Barzo omg imagine if that happed to one of the artist, if i was in that position i’d cry lmao
This is one of the reasons I cannot take my eye off the loading screen before the game. The splash arts. As an artist myself I've always admired the artists for league, I aim to be as good as you guys. :')
Kudos to everyone.
for me, this is more like the tutorial that really give a tutorial rather than those video of "tutorials"
I think that in fact you can learn more by just watching those pros do their work without any explanation than by watching some artist just talking gliberish on youtube
@@jeremylam6060 agree
@@jeremylam6060 true that, i learned from this video more than i learned from all videos i watched on yt
@@jeremylam6060 100% agree! I've learned shading tips and lighting a lot better by just watching people draw, rather than by the step by step tutorials for them. Kinda helps you by showing and not telling.
"You've got a pretty good body shape for Aphelios there"
Aphelios: ⌛
I can see why they chose the version of Aphelios where he is kneeling. I think it emphasises his subservience to his cause, defending the faithful.
a lot of young artist see these beautiful art and then try it on their own and get frustrated at their work. One thing they don't realized is that you don't get there overnight, it takes years to achieve that level. Practice your fundamentals don't jump straight into detailing.
8:17 layer mode for light experiment
Need to translate it, not sure what it is
9:07 color balance to get some more warmth into shadows
It’s like less control ver of rgb curves in matte painting workflow
Thus also seems to be how he mainly gets that unique blue to purplish mood he typically has, it’s not just blue but has something else to it= color balance helps to establish that as a main bg mood in thumbnail will bled over during refinement stage
9:30 he uses blur and then mask to get camera focus effect
9:51 seems to have a list of different filter effects for post processing like with camera photography or film
It’s a trick he says that riot does often to get that splash art look
Another way to think of it is like filters for Instagram pics,
By doing this you treat it as a photo/film screen cap
rather than just a painting
and that’s potentially adding that cinematic camera look to the splash art look
10:52 he does something to get the color edge burn effect, not entirely sure what it is, I believe Steve Corman explains it too
11:05 so basically after doing all this then he can just focus on render, essentially big pic stuff is done for the most part
But I think the additional lights added during render makes it more impactful so I dint actually think big oic stuff is necessarily over
That list of filters is the 'color lookup', you can find it in the adjusts menu
10:00 it’s his version of thumbnailing color options
Instagram filter idea
I guessed Chengwei Pan was a good artist, but drawing Insider THAT good in only 10 MINUTES is just amazing!
Moonton be like: WRITE THAT DOWN! WRITE THAT DOWN!
Antonio Aguilar nice
Why would they write it. All they need is to copy and paste it like they always did
Lol true, moonton is copying league
Me as mobile legend player can say that this is 100% accurate
moontoon have no dignity
The interviewer was great, he immediately asked the question that I wanted an answer for
"can you draw me?"
This artist is actually a legend. This is my first time to see Chengwei and seeing how humble he looks is amazing.

That's 200+ collective years of professional illustration experience.
I really want this as my future job, I hope I'll be good enough soon to be one. Watching stuff like this just gives me inspiration
I hope you can do it someday :D
Hi paula
Just remember that concept art pays less than splash art
I'm sure you will! You just gotta do it in your own pace and be patient. At the start of my study I wanted to become a programmer but ended up as an artist and learned things I could never imagine. You'll get there for sure!
Didn’t expect league to be in insider

I never expect insider to think abt this
It's amazing how he drew the sketch in 3 seconds!!! it takes me an hour....
I learned so much! Chengwei explains his process so clearly :o
this is basically another step for fulfilling my dream of actually working for the artistic department of Riot and illustrate some of the champions from LoL and characters from valorant. I really liked a lot this video, it explained a lot of necessary things and basics before going in depth, but i would love to see one of those Riot artist twitch streaming their work from home so i could try and learn more about this art style. More about brushes, etc.
It’s been a year, how is it going?
That's so amazing. I'm always amazed by people who can just nail those loose expressive strokes and build figures before details. That's a constant struggle for me and some people just have it down! Hopefully I'll get there
Wow, 🎉this was so much fun to watch and I learned a lot! Thanks Harry for all the hard work to make this interview happen. His art is insanely good! I love the stylization of the characters in Legends! Esp the music video Legends Never Die! 💪Keep up the great content! I love how confident the artist is! I wish I could watch him do a detailed process of a final piece.
The interview is so good and the last part is so cuteee.
I'm gonna get at this level. It will take years. But I will make it
So how are you doing a year later? Can I see your progress in Instagram or do you not post them?
I lack discipline. Every time I draw something I resort to sculpting out the scapes rather than making a sketch first. This leads to crazy proportions and a lack of detail.
Felt my entire body turn inside out when the guy asked to be drawn
This is sososososososo helpful, thank you so much insider and Pan Chengwei for this interview
"So many weapons Aphelios, the most lethal is your faith."
I can't think of a more satisfying feeling than flipping the canvas and the artwork looking perfect
god iv been yearning for some insight on the art process for the splash and stuff for so long. You can find alot of them on art station but seeing them work on a piece like that in real time is so interesting. The best part of league is the splash arts yo.
Those arts are splendid. I loved the art of Aphelios when they are adding the details. Chengwei Pan's splash arts are truly tremendous.
I'm glad you covered this :)
I feel that artists are really under paid and under-appreciated. Artists bring new realities to our world through visuals and entertainments, yet our starting pay is lower than a fastfood employee.
This awesome , props to all artist behind those champions .
Amazing nuggets of knowledge from such a short video! Please keep them coming!
I've always wondered how did they make them. They're beautiful
Thanks a lot for the video. I think this format should be applied up to all tutorials. One guy asking, and the other is replying while drawing. Thats perfect
Wow this is amazing! I really love it! Thank you for the video :D
This is an amazing insight to the design process--very impressive! Chengwei was very nice, and explained everything so clearly--thank you!
love these type of videos man
this is really insightful. amazing content
We need an episode on Arcane as well!! Riot is just insane with their artwork
So this is the guy who makes the splash arts? He really came a long way from old Poppy to this.
As an artist and a League player i enjoyed watching this. I hope i can work as an illustrator at Riot Games!
So glad to finally see Chengwei! I'm a fan of his work!!!
Thank you for featuring an illustrator from Riot! Theyre really good! Ther artsplashes inspires me a lot! 😍
this is rly motivating me to make more art bc previously i thought it was impossible to reach that kind of quality of drawing jst from line art. also aphelios is my fav character
dude's drawing process look so fxcking easy but is actually hard if we do it ourself

im so glad this video exists, ive been looking FOREVER for something explaining how the artists make the splash arts
Wait he didn't charge you for that drawing? That like never ever happens
the sketch that took
@@lex5831 how about all of the year he spends studying how to draw smh
@@suinara6599 he gets paid for that by working at Riot. he put very minimal effort into that sketch and it is probably never going to be found anywhere outside of this episode. the interviewer was pretty selfish to ask for a self portrait when he could've asked for a live sample of something else but it's literally not even 10 minutes of time. what would he have charged for that, like $5?
@@suinara6599 not to mention he was probably paid to do this interview already
@@lex5831 woah woah there $5? Even that's low. Artists are taught that when they're selling their work, to never underpay themselves, even if it's a sketch. Your work matters, no matter how small.
