I came from scotland and my grandparents lived many years after the war with only the most basic food and that was in short supply. The rationing of meat lasting until 1954. I cant even imagine how bad it was in parts of europe directly involved with the war. My mom was born in Northern Michigan and her side of the family lives up in Traverse City/Kalkaska, MI and none of the bays up there look like those pictures you showed. I've been up there in every season and I've never ever seen the bay's water so clear. If they do, it's only one week out of the year. It's cold and easily the most miserable and depressing place I've ever been. Those pics are VERY deceiving, looking almost tropical!! Almost all the fam that were born and raised out there have/had issues directly attributed from being stuck in such a small town with crappy weather. Only a few months of decent weather during the year before getting snow, and being on the east of the bay they're in a heavy snow drift area due to the "lake effect". I worked for the UN Refugee Agency back when the Syrian war broke out and there was a big refugee exodus from Syria… at any rate, my direct supervisor had spent over a decade working in the refugee camps in Africa… she said there was a lot of abuse and there would be riots if they ran out of food… but, the thing that made me question, was that the average amount of time a refugee who ended up in a camp, would spend 17 Years in that camp… the policy of the UN is that no refugee would be allowed to return to their homelands if there was a threat still posed to them. Sounds good. And I worked with a guy who had lived in a camp for 7 or 8 years and met some other refugees who seemed grateful , but this 17 year average, and the first hand accounts of what my supervisor mentioned… I found quite disturbing. And I even got into it online with someone claiming to be from the IRC who was saying that we in the USA should be taking in the newly fleeing Syrians… to which I replied, there are people who’ve been living in camps for 17 years… maybe they should be first in line and they Syrians can go take their places in the camps in Africa. But, this doesn’t seem to compute with anyone. And all these activist types that I run into seem oblivious to the millions of people who are basically imprisoned for decades. And if you go on the unhcr site, at least back then when I was working for them, there’s no real information. It’s good that there is a place to go, when one’s govt is supporting deadly persecution for whatever reason, but it’s gotten out of control. I was told that there were 55 million people living under the protection of the refugee agency. I used to ponder what was meant by ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’ and I keep seeing it happening.

During WW2 Germany was starving as a whole country. All their supplies were cut off and of course the least amount of food went to prisoners. Food wasnt sitting in supermarkets waiting to be bought. The people were all on strict rations.

I came from scotland and my grandparents lived many years after the war with only the most basic food and that was in short supply. The rationing of meat lasting until 1954. I cant even imagine how bad it was in parts of europe directly involved with the war. I hadnt ever thought about the camps but it makes sense they were so ill from starvation then typhus if the overall population had its food supply strrangled.
It has been questioned that these structures were a way to transport things. Who knows what's been concealed.

My mom was born in Northern Michigan and her side of the family lives up in Traverse City/Kalkaska, MI and none of the bays up there look like those pictures you showed. I've been up there in every season and I've never ever seen the bay's water so clear. If they do, it's only one week out of the year. It's cold and easily the most miserable and depressing place I've ever been. Those pics are VERY deceiving, looking almost tropical!! Almost all the fam that were born and raised out there have/had issues directly attributed from being stuck in such a small town with crappy weather. Only a few months of decent weather during the year before getting snow, and being on the east of the bay they're in a heavy snow drift area due to the "lake effect". I feel bad for my immediate family that's stuck out there now after we lost our family home in California during Covid and after the death of my father.(I'm still in Ca) Interesting pics though under the water. Props to whoever went down there to discover that!!
