You forgot one thing! Always keep a pillow nearby so that once every 20-30, you can stop and scream all of your hate and frustration from sanding into the pillow.
I agree on everything you said. The point about used sandpaper becoming a finer grit really bugs me. If you buy good paper, a new sheet has very uniform particle sizes. As it wears, some particles get smaller than others. The paper may feel like a finer grit, but the particles aren’t uniform any longer. It’s going to leave scratches that aren’t uniform.

Great advice!!! Love the vids guys… I learned way back in college from a fine instrument luthier in my neighborhood… imagine the guy in an old brick Victorian house full of tools and benches.. that if you go too far past 320-400 you start to burnish the wood. You can take it to 7000 but the cells are full and you’ve polished it too fine to accept stain etc. 400 max for me. Then I spray lacquer or on finer finishes I French polish. You can burnish lacquer with FRESHLY CRUMPLED paper bags . BUT… a lot depends on the wood species too .. We all have our own techniques and whatever works for you. When I repair and replace veneers or mitered-in pieces all bets are off and whatever gets you the best result👍😉 thanks for posting!
Yeah, the sanding enthusiast is not always my best friend. We only go to 220 on raw wood. There is no shortage of people who try to impress me with all the extra work they do... it never works.

Would a mouse sander be sufficient for doing a guitar?

Good info. I may someday build a kit bass or guitar, but I thought after 2024, that TTG will no longer be doing any build workshops. Did I litterly get that wrong? Just checking.

Nuts, I hate knowing the right way. But Thanks anyway, now I have to buy different grades of sandpaper and lots of it, and then there's the stuff I didn't do because sanding was needed.

Another question: which do you prefer for level sanding, Wet or Dry? I've been doing dry, but thinking maybe I need to change.

I wonder if using like colored chalk hairspray or something like that the way you would use dykem on metal would be useful. It should get into the scratches easier than a pencil, and shouldn't penetrate the wood.
As a carpenter who uses powdered chalk in chalklines, I'd say there's a very good chance that the chalk would be pushed into the wood. Worth a try of course, on scrap wood.
This is great stuff. Now, to completely go against the “You should try *this* or *that* paper” thing, I've really enjoyed using Mirka 800 and 1200 sanding discs during polish prep. Amazingly clog-resistant and usable dry. Just my 2¢. Keep up the great work. 👍

Do you run the deWalt sander on top speed or what do you recommend???
Started building my own guitars and it is not easy to sand. You have to be maticulous or when you spray it will show up and then I feel like crap and have to sand it back down.
What are your thoughts on air sanders, Do you use them?

That is a great point that I totally missed. I run the sander at the slowest setting. In the case of the DeWalt it is 1.
I use sanders as much as possible.
If you are painting grain fillers and primers will help make a smother finish with less work. There are also grain fillers that work well with clear coat....sometimes.
In what instances do we need to sand WITH the grain? Since we use random orbits & reestablish roundovers? If it's too tight here, then maybe touch on it in a livestream.
As often as possible.
I realize that the sander isn't always going with the grain but just through all the grits and you will be good to go

I was until I retired recently a decorator here in the UK. Matts point about worn abrasive is spot on. The amount of times I had to set people straight on sites that a worn 80 grit paper does not become a120 grit by not cutting efficiently.

What's the final grit that you use?
We usually stop at 220 on raw wood. We go quite a bit finer on finish etc.

I skipped through this vid a bit because it was all stuff I already know tbh, but if you didn't mention it, I would add that you need to buy good quality abrasives. (3M free cut is excellent for example.) Cheap sandpaper seems like the same stuff, but it is a false economy. This is especially so down the track with wet sanding... perhaps your next video...?
I don't think dull sand paper makes a lot of sense for the grits you are using for wood, as you said. But as someone who did paint cars, keeping dull 1000 grit and up sand paper for wet sanding is very useful. I often times used it as an intermediate step between grits while finishing clear coat. If the paper is worn, then the grit size has in fact changed. Something else that makes a difference is the quality of the paper you are using. While I'm fan of 3M for a lot of stuff, the uniformity of the grit on their 1000 grit an up paper is not so great. McGuiar's used to be pretty good for readily available paper. There was a Japanese brand that was even better, but I don't recall the name. Fortunately for me, I probably have more 1K to 3K grit paper than I'll need for the rest of my life.

If you fight Matt on this he's going hit you with a 60-grit grinding wheel. Trust me, you don't want to know what that's like. However, I've never had a problem of forgetting what grit I left off with. NO!! DON'T DO IT, MATT!!!

In my 20's I used to repaint boat bottoms. I am not talking about your 16ft fishing boat. I am talking 35 to 60 ft yachts. I HATE SANDING! Also when we got a new boat I had to wipe the entire hull bottom with Acetone and then use this water like primer before painting. That was the nasties shit you have ever worked with. It melted your gloves and finally you would just let it burn your hands. Sanding sucks... On a kit guitar it's more tolerable. But still... You gave me a flash back on standing old bottom paint on a 60ft yacht. My left eye is twitching right now typing this. LOL!

Thats not the right way! Use only 3M®paper and use all the grits up till 5000 grit 3M®. Never use higher grit like 7000 or 10,000 as 3M® does not make them. Also you MUST use sanding blocks from StuMac® ONLY no mater the price. Never make your of sanding blocks you don't know what you are doing! Dan Erlewine is the only Luthier that can design tools for you to sand with. Remember theses rules that are Gods own truth and you will be sanding the right way. Oh and when wet sanding only use 3M®paper specially formulated to fall apart so you need a lot of it.
