When it's all completed, and set up primo as possible, you should contact the best guitar shredder you know to come in and tear the hell out of that fretboard. A 2x4 guitar should have the best player you know of playing it, on video of course.
That's a great idea.
I love the good hearted way of you being practical, instructional and willing to have some fun.
It's actually a nice job. Go Matt.
Thanks my friend this was certainly fun but still not recommend
Most people don't budget the value of their time. As you mentioned - at the end of the day the cost of the wood is a small proportion of the whole project. You are right to say that the only time to do this is to practice shaping the neck ,,, don't bind or anything else. Great video, as always. Thanks.
I recently saw a Furniture Restoration video where "Wood Hardener" was brushed onto wood that was falling apart. This common product is used to stabilize rotting wood, and wood with fungus, and it was mentioned that it hardens the wood so it is "like stone," and dries fast. They also mentioned using it on "spalted" wood. I'm guessing that if it were brushed on "sparingly" or diluted, it may make soft wood quite usable, even for a guitar neck, or soft guitar bodies. I couldn't find any information on its affect on acoustic/wood vibration. 🤔
I never thought of that... I wonder if that stuff would be just what the doctor ordered on this guitar
I live on an island where wood is scarce and very expensive to import so learning how to build guitars with whatever wood I could find was a great cost effective way of learning and making the rookie mistakes. I still love to play a thinline style tele that is built 100% from recycled pine. Lightweight and so resonate. I don’t mind if it gets dinged up either. Great video! I enjoy practicing my craft on quality wood now.
If your circumstances dictate your wood choices in ways that make this valuable then I'm glad I did this video.
Thanks for watching my friend
Fun video. I've worked a lot with projects made from 2x4s and they are notoriously unstable. However, I'll bet that a six or eight piece laminated neck would be darn stable. I might try building an eight piece laminated neck glued with hide glue. Thanks for the idea.
This build was totally unconventional, but for a "budding luthier"/home guitar builder was actually full of great tips and tricks. Your sense of humor and instructional delivery 'makes learning fun' 😊 Hopefully it does get completed and we get to see/hear the final results. Great project!
Thanks my friend I'm sure I'll finish this up and I'm glad you enjoyed the videos
I followed your advice and bought some of those $7.99 necks blanks from StewMac.
Now yer talking. You should be very happy with those
About that temporary "spot glue" trick, I recently heard of using diluted (with water) wood glue for gluing nuts on, so as not to make such a strong bond it chips out when you change it later. Sounds like a good idea, but I've never tried it. Seems like it may be good for the spot glue too?
Also, the 2x4's in my 200 year old house are probably better quality than any wood you could buy today. Maybe I will pull a couple out and make me a new Tele! 🤣
Meanwhile the 2x4's we used in a house in Arizona 10 years ago warped and twisted so hard they bowed out the siding in several humps down the sides of the house.
Matt, I haven't watched you for awhile but I just have to say you look and sound healthy and very focused. So, whatever you're doing in your life, keep it up. Nice seeing you. Brian
Thanks Brian great to hear from you
I love that Lemmy picture.
Been playing music all my life for a living!!! All my guitars are made of 2x4's and at least 2 of my keyboards!
You brought up some other great points Matt about the knots and hard grains not flattening out properly. That will most likely case some issues for the player. Also the checks which pine invariably does when it starts to dry out. But the real test will be time to see how the neck performs with the weather.
While it's possible to use cheaper cuts of wood for a guitar build, the difference in cost of timbers really isn't that great. And being it's an instrument, why not use something that at least looks nice? But I'm all for using different special of wood for unique instruments. There's an Australian builder (from Perth I think) that makes them from Tassie Oak.
BTW I remember watching a video from Wills Easy Guitar where he made a guitar out of a bag of rough firewood...neck and all. Lotta work though
great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it my friend
It's gonna work!!!it will work !
It will probably work
Great video showing very good tips on shaping and how too's
Thanks for watching broitherman
Thanks for the videos! ✌️🙂🎻😎
My pleasure!
Ok I am invested in this, and I get the feeling this is gonna be viral for you. Can't wait to see the result.
I bet it will sound awesome !!! Take that Tone wood people !!
10:30 Wood pooty, is a freaking awesome word, I’m using it from now on.
I hope you do my friend
I like your style
The message I got, and I hope it's clear to others, is that the wood is not the expensive portion of neck building. The time, the labor, the craftsmanship, are more valuable than the small portion of board feet of lumber involved. As you said many times, you have a few bucks worth of pine here, and StewMac is selling mahogany neck blanks for only $7.99. A much better value to match the work to create a musical instrument. Great job!
FINALLY!
Thanks for your comment my friend. There are too many people here who have completely missed the point of this exercise.
Thanks Matt. I'd be tempted to put it back in the rack at Home Depot when you're done. With a hidden camera of course!
At the Home Depot near us? Talk about throwing pearls before swine
Cool video thank you!
Glad you liked it Tom
Great vids!
Thanks amigo
make one from paper mache. or bamboo / switch cane, or 3D printed from filament made from the pulverized bodies 100 GI-Joe with the Kung-Fu grip, That's an interesting journey I guess. The Strawman guitar series - Where we invent a problem, just to struggle with it and show why it's a bad idea.
But really, I'd prefer watching you just making quality stuff, with good materials, the right way.
Although... ripping and gluing switch cane into fake wood to make into a neck or body.. maybe that would be fun.
I know that was a lot of work but it was fun to watch. 👍
It was fun watching 🤣🤣🤣
I find a hard block with sandpaper is quite good for dealing with that sort of grain, sometimes I'll use a radius block. I've made some necks with northern ash.
Cool, you're hired
@@TexasToastGuitars new class, sanding necks lol
I really enjoyed this. I am one of those folks who work under the mindset where I hate ruining hardwood, regardless of cost. I wouldn't waste frets or a truss rod on this build if I were doing it-- I would probably drill slots and use cutting board offcuts to make basic reinforcement rods, and I would make a softwood fretboard as well. I would be solely doing this for the purpose of shaping and getting the full process comfortable. There's nothing worse than getting to the neck shaping step, and ruining it after dropping a couple hundred dollars into it.
If you can say that you will ruin a "good" piece of wood than I think it is just as likely that you can say I will make a great neck.
great!!! Much fun lol.
Thanks my friend
You’re a good sport, man. 😆
I appreciate that
Son fun Matt!
Thank you for sharing. How much glue is enough? Is there a such thing as to much glue
I think too much for is a thing
Matt I was thinking the contest next year should be a pinewood derby guitar. The humor of this is not lost on me. However my desire to make a pine guitar has diminished. Thanks for the video! It has been a fun ride
Hi Sean great to hear from you. If you take anything away from this video it should be how ridiculous it was hahaha
OMG............ The secret under ground bunker has been exposed in this video 😂😂😂😂💜💜 Sarah xx
Hahaha yeah no one knew before now
Using building lumber to build the guitar building contest would be fun to see !! But I will be watching either way !! Love the content !! Thanks , Matt & Chris !!!
Robert Benedetto made an archtop acoustic from pine lumber just to prove it was doable. It turned out fine, except for not looking so hot (knots and all that I mean)
Thanks brotherman
Lol nice shot of the undisclosed location 😜 Really fun series! Did I hear you correctly? You going to get it plek'd? That's wild ahhaha
Oh yes I'm going to get this guitar pleked over at maximum guitar works
Is that an Infinity Cutting Tools - Mega flush trim router bit? The one I bought after watching your video 3 years worked great in my router table.
It isn't an infinity but Rod it has replaceable carbide cutters
for me it was useful without a doubt. if i had started with the actual wood i planned for the neck i would have damaged it irreversibly 3 times in the span of 30 mins. didnt know how the new saw would cut, the rasp would cut, how much pressure/force to use etc etc.
good investment of time and it was already fun to smell the wood and create sth out of seemingly nothing.
I'm glad you got something out of this video my friend
I think you will do well whatever you choose to build guitars with
Two thoughts: 1. Is a 2x4 guitar marginally better than a plywood guitar? (Maybe because of the weight savings. Maybe not because of the instability/soft wood.) 2. Do an opaque paint job on it. Then you can hand it to folks and let them play it and to see if they can tell it is made with inferior wood. A blind tone test, if you will. 😉
I have done a plywood guitar and it certainly was heavy.
The paint for this will not hide anything. All of the fun for me was that I did it in spite of my better judgement.
Just saying I've seen Japanese guitars from the 60's and 70's that have plywood necks and bodies and not only are many of then still around but people are paying crazy prices for them now.
Another good one! Would you please put in a $20 per month level on your Patreon?
PRS would definitely not be happy with the putty. He'd probably start ranting about rubber bridges and Vaseline and then decide to market it as "tone putty."
Hahaha of course that's what I used
You can get a poplar 3x3 or 4x4 pretty cheap, Poplar 1x6 or 1x4's are fairly cheap to make your body with. If you can get some good spruce ( a soft wood) that can make a nice top panel.
You got that right
I practiced on 2x 4s. I did not take it as far you did ( I practiced shaping and cutting the truss rod channel. That’s about it, it was just to get a feel for it. But yeah that stuff sucks because of combined hard and soft grain. I enjoyed this video. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
I think you did it right there was no need to do what I did hahaha
What would Lemmey Do? F yeah!
That is a great poster
The 2x4 guitar build is great for showing guitar building techniques. Think of it this way. If you were teaching someone to ride a motorcycle would you put them on a brand new Ducati? You would put their butt on a 7 year old slightly dinged up but safe Honda.
That is a great analogy... Of course, when you learn to ride a 250 in a parking lot you are qualified to ride a 250 in a parking lot.
It takes a lot of work to get good at building guitars just like riding motorcycles. You have to put in the work, and you cannot buy competency.
@@TexasToastGuitars Attention to detail, patience and practice is the way skills are acquired.
I second that oak sucks for a neck, and it gets the same facets you got with this neck.... just because Brian May did it doesn't make it a great idea.. The guitar you build with it will probably end up neck diving too, oak is heavy. On another note, that little green oscillating edge sander that was in the back ground at the beginning, would that be a good neck shaping tool in leu of a dead head sander? I'm still doing all my neck shaping with rasps and sandpaper. I've contemplated getting one of those for doing necks, but i'm not sure if it would work/be worth the money, since i already have a vertical belt sander and a spindle sander in the shop. It would be a dedicated neck shaping tool if i got one.
The dead head sander and that small edge sander are pretty different.
I'm not saying you shouldn't or can't but it isn't the same
I really want to see chip board inlays or maybe some kitchen tile.
Great suggestion, we will do that on the next one... that we aren't doing
@@TexasToastGuitars lol
I’d really love for you to finish it, but sell it as art. The proceeds could benefit a charity.
I wonder about the longevity of it
I think for what it is supposed to be it is at the end of its life cycle already.
I have to admit I'm extremely interested in how this thing comes out!
I'll be honest I am too
I think you can never have too many videos that emphasize the order of go in any particular facet of guitar building. You simply cannot reinforce that stuff enough. So for me, the videos are useful and intriguing - and not because of the novelty angle of using crap wood to try to make something nice. Instead, my takeaway is that neck building is complex and involves a lot of steps, and why not just take it slow, be careful and instead of "fighting wood" (we all have had that experience) unnecessarily, why not honor the need for precision and order in construction by starting with good materials? On that point alone, which you demonstrate in spades here, the video(s) are invaluable.
It is peculiar that people can convince themselves that they will ruin something good but can't convince themselves to slow down and do a good job.
It is also funny that many miss the point of the exercise which is to NOT use a 2x4 to practice building guitars
When is the great reveal?
Don't be so sure it's a no go. Just think Danelectro!
Remember, the original intention wasn't to build a cool guitar it was to demonstrate why you shouldn't use 2x4s to practice guitar building
@@TexasToastGuitars I gotcha. I miss the point sometimes. Okay, often.
also, at the end you can practice throwing it in the bin from a distance :) 👍
Good tip!
so, you're recommending 2x4 for necks now huh?
(only kidding! only kidding!)
i said it on the first vid and i'll say it again. hearing you complain about the things that will go wrong and how you're dealing with them is better than people just showing you how they do a job. it's the principles behind it that are important. you've learnt them over time.
i'll likely build one of these necks. might even put a fret board on it. it'll be crap as well. but i haven't made a guitar, so it's practice and if i can get close. i'm happy. if i slip... eh... next time i'll try and do better. if i get tear out. well i'm using crap wood. take it with a grain of salt. unless it's something i screwed up. i recently planed a bit of pine on my planer. threw it in water to bring the grain out. did it again. worked like shit. hit it with a flame to see the effect. eh... still looks like shit with some flaming. i'll plane it again and practice shaping now. it'll feel like shit. but i'll learn how to get the shape and that's all i care about. then i can radius the neck... and practice slotting. then use it for firewood
You know how it goes my friend you have to keep trying and keep working and you will keep getting better
@@TexasToastGuitars I'm glad I stumbled onto your channel
Your making content not a usable guitar. All the lessons are worth learning, every chip out and grain imperfection is part of learning. Thank you for all your effort.
Thanks my friend. too many people forget this
You should get a 2x4 from an old ass house. Shits harder than a bus station steak..
I agree but this is the one and only time I'll be using 2x4s for guitars
You need to do a blind test. 2x4 neck vs real neck and see if you can tell a difference while playing!
I'll see what I can do
🤣🤣🤣 FUN
Did you say wood pooty?
Indeed I did sir
hate that you bitched about it all the way through, but you did it. I am a goldsmith for 35 years , we taught everything with mock ups. it was learning techniique over it being perfect.. set a 1.00 dollar cz versus a 10,oo dollar Diamond. yeah I love that you went through the process even though it was just a kick in the balls and annoying. thanks for your work.
I did this so you don't have to
But I did enjoy the process it just seemed foolish. I don't know if people are killed for mahogany the way they have been for diamonds but the lumber isn't that much more expensive
you are a professional guitar builder do a professional job and see how it comes out
That's my big plan my friend
Dude leave your adds everybody else does and you can use the money we are use to the adds and those who oppose have add free Tube.
The ads are staying out for now... No corporate overlords
i used to love Texas Toast Guitar videos but then the titles started the "you are stupid" thing and i just stopped watching your vids with titles telling people they are stupid. i guess some like that so you don't miss me...
Must hit a little too close to home huh
People seem to watch videos with stupid in the title... I can't explain it
@@TexasToastGuitarsthere is a certain truth in that!😂
