Thats what impressions are. And from what reviews have said and shown the game doesnt change much so if they arent vibing with it 7 hours in than they probably wont vibe with it later.

@@gearhead417 I think their complaints about this impression is valid. It seemed like nobody actually played the game and RPGs like this tend to take 5-10 hours to scratch the surface.
@@Hocaro That isnt a valid criticism. That is bad game design if you game takes 5 hours to get good. Time is precious. Most of us are adults. There is value in hearing the impressions of the first few hours of a game. This isnt about instant gratification either. If the beginning of your game isnt fun or doesnt grip the player to make them want to play than why should they push forward with a promise that it gets better?

@@dingus2k I mean, when other outlets have full in-depth reviews, I’d expect Kinda Funny to at least have some substantial impressions. In a game that is dense like Dragon’s Dogma 2, to get a good sense of the game you need to have more than 7 hours of play time. This was clearly a deviation from the normal level of effort KF puts into their game discussions, and it is a letdown considering this is one of the biggest games releasing this time of year.

Exactly. People saying "Well its just a first impression" like ok, a first impression on a date is usually something you base off of the entirety of the date, not the first few moments.
Only one of them sounded like they played more than just a few hours.
I also think a lot of expectations of the first hour are people assuming it would be something like Elden Ring which starts off STRONG. But that's also not the kind of game DD2 is. DD2 is much more in the realm of games like Skyrim/Oblivion of a lived in RPG vs the more action focused style of the FromSoftware games. So it makes sense for one to have a much slower burn in the beginning than the other.
strongly agree, especially as influencers that people listen too, this kind of shit can put people off buying the game and destroy the series for another decade, hopefully people vist other sources that actually played teh game for more than an hour or two
All that production for uninformed takes about a game they haven’t played.
I was really looking forward to this Gamescast but I’m not gonna lie it was pretty terrible to listen to. Having an impressions video on a game where two out of three have played less than 2 hours of such a massive game is insane to me. why not just sit this one out until people get deeper in? Even wilder was how a huge chunk of the video was just complaining about not having enough time to play games, after the first 10 minutes of the podcast being all housekeeping. Genuinely one of the worst gamecasts I’ve listened to from the guys in my 5+ years of being a fan. The rush to throw something out there just to get clicks upon first drop of an embargo is so disappointing.

It’s unfortunate, but I also get how the cycle works on these discussions. I’m happy to get what we get, and I’m appreciative of all the work the KF people put in. Is the biggest still ? game of the year for me though.
Yeah happens often over here. When Elden Ring came out I was deflated by KF's thoughts/coverage. Elden Ring was a massive moment for gaming and triumph for Fromsoftware.

Play or stream your favorite games by all means but that doesn't mean that you should discard your audience on a show like Gamescast, or you know, it's okay to just sit an episode out. While I don't doubt your honest intention coming into this episode, I felt a lack of respect for and appreciation of your audience. Hope you'll do better next time.

Before any one of them got into souls games that was the biggest disparity, and it still is for some of them like Greg and Tim, who didn’t even have Elden Ring in their top 5 of that year. In fact I don’t think they even bothered to play it, despite it being one of the biggest and most important releases of the last decade.
Nah KF love very specific types of games and everything not polished or made in a certain way will get knocked (BG3’s turn based combat being their main talking point during that release)

Have to agree with the rest of the best friends here, this episode did feel like a let down for such a big release week. Obviously, none of us have any idea how scheduling played out behind the scenes, so maybe it was unavoidable this time around. Either way, it’s a good opportunity to learn from and improve on in the future. Get some rest Kinda Funny team-and I’m always available if you need another reviewer! 😉.

Mike didn't play it; this is the most phoned in thing I have ever seen and at the height of Gamergate 2.0 is revealing.
Mikes game of the year last year was Diablo 4. A game that charges you more for a mount skin than the game itself. His opinions are not valid.

@@kingjosh_ Even if the MTX was the best in the industry, it wouldn't save the lack luster content of the core gameplay which likely won't be fixed till the expansion just like D3 didn't get it's QoL changes and things like Adventure mode until Reaper of Souls.
Having Diablo 4 in your top list for anything shows the lack of experience in other games. As a game journalist, that seems like a requirement.
Mike's comment about the character creation doesn't make sense, they give you so many presets to choose from that look fine.
I mean, Mike also said they don’t have lock on for combat and they do. This entire segment was sprinkled with misinformation.

yeah the character creator is widely being praised as one of teh best around, and greg hates fantasy themed games, its just not his thing and he played one hour during a busy schedule and is done, the original dragons dogma had a slow start , but when it showed its true gameplay loop at teh end game, thats what fans re,meber and love, not the first hour of gameplay

This episode was a bit of a let down. No one had enough time in the game to give impressions of real substance and the fact that the title and thumbnail highlight DD2 as the headline topic feels very disingenuous

I could go on, but the point is that the guys are able to give more in-depth impressions for games that are very dense as shown by the examples above, but clearly in this case, they did not either dedicate enough time, or did not have the desire to give a full in-depth impressions video. And I’m sorry, but if you’re covering one of the biggest release of this year, a game that’s been long anticipated like this, you need to cover it properly.
Again, I still love the guys, and a mediocre video isn’t going to ruin my day or make them my bitter enemies, but it is important to call out when they fall short of their usual standards. The fact that you have a game that is as dense and complex as the dragons dogma two, and the person with the most playtime is only at seven hours, at that point you should not be speaking on the game in an impressions or review standpoint in my opinion, because you were not truly in the game enough to give a good sense of the experience.
I don’t know if the issue was simply company scheduling, or with the chosen reviewers (no hate to Mike and Bless and Greg, I almost always love their input on games, ESPECIALLY when they dedicate the appropriate amount of time to forming said input.
This discussion felt like a rushed attempt to get clicks with the embargo lift, and we should expect more from Kinda Funny than that because most of the time, they do provide much better discussion and more developed insights, even for a preview. I hope their full review is done with more care, and that in the future, if they aren’t prepared enough to adequately cover a game at an embargo, they stick to their integrity as Kinda Funny and opt to push their discussion.
Also this isn’t just me wanting to give you an essay, but I want to be articulate for anyone who sees this comment so I don’t come off as simply hating.

First impressions matter, what you said applies to a full review, full reviews should involve more play time, impressions are valid at any point.
Having to play a game for 10 hours BEFORE it gets fun is fundamentally flawed.
@@haileystutzman735 But determining a movie in the first 10-20 minutes also isn't fair when the movie is 1 1/2 - 2 hours long. A game with more than 100+ hours of content deserves having more than a few hours played. Not sure if 10 hours is required, but at least 2-3 imo.

Your impression was you're waiting for reviews... You are the reviewers. Such a cop out. Please think about how all of us have to buy our games so when you say "if you're not enjoying it move on" is like saying you don't like that steak you bought only eat half and pick up the chicken. We don't have those options and usually have to finish what we start or see it through. I can afford one big game every few months at least acknowledge we exist. Most of the things that were negatives for the team regarding Dragons Dogma 2 were positives for me. I’m looking forward to this game. I did love the rewarding feeling of winning a fight in hardcore DD1. So everything they said reminded me of that.
As a person who loved Dragon's Dogma 1, this is exactly what I expect to hear about DD2 (pre-ordering today lol)

I don't really get why publishers give KF review codes when the KF crew can never be bothered to put in effort to complete the games they're given.
Because they offer a different type of service/marketing then you would get if you were reading a review from IGN/Gamespot. It's actually a good thing that they don't only give codes to websites that have extremely similar standards and output. You get the choice of going to a variety of different sources to formulate your opinion.
Also you do not need to complete a game to give your thoughts on it. To score it and say these are your thoughts on the full game, sure. But a lot of games don't deserve to be completed and that's just the truth. And I can believe that people who plays games for a living would likely know where their breaking point is for a game.

@@henrysmith5343 I mean I'm 14 minutes in and only blessing has said how long he's played and it was 7 hours. 7 hours in a RPG is enough to have some first impressions. If you played Skyrim for 7 hours and had no positives or negative to say about it then your brain does not work.
No one is telling you to buy this game or ignore it based completely off these opinions of people who told you up front how much they played.

@@RedSpy47 My issue is I think they shouldn't make these impression videos until they've played a bigger chunk of the game because you end up with a pointless conversation like this one where none of them can actually say anything of substance.
The fact is KF are known half assing reviews if it's not a PlayStation exclusive, I've been around since they started the channel and they've got progressively more lazy when it comes to reviews.

If you value your time and don’t want to throw away 1 hr of your life . Don’t watch this video if you came here interested in dragons dogma 2. One “reviewer “ has 7hrs of game time full of complaints , the other has 2 hours … and concluded with this game is uninspiring.. I ended with the 3rd reviewer saying I’m on rise of the ronin team … I don’t understand the point of making a first impression with a crew who haven’t played the game. Go watch those 10 mins rushed reviews or someone who has actually put in the work playing the game. (KFG) consider putting up a job posting or a volunteer who is willing to play the game to help you guys on those wasted game codes or don’t please just don’t cover it at all. Developers put in years of their life for you guys to put out this garbage of a video for the clicks. Just a friendly advice the gaming industry falls apart and I don’t see this being a helping hand for it
I don’t think it’s “archaic” I think it’s a style and maybe it wasn’t for Blessing necessarily. I think the dragons dogma gameplay loop is pretty unique so I’m not really sure how it could feel old when this is the second time we’re seeing it lol

Especially with Mike it's either 'I'm having such a blast' or 'This one is not for me.'
Want to confirm what Blessing said about playing Control after playing Alan Wake II. I started Control after it got all the Game Awards hype and bounced off it pretty hard despite loving the subject matter. PS4 performance was really rough and this was also prior to them trying to fix the map. After playing and loving AW2 I decided it was time to go back since I had the PS5 port and barreled through the game getting the platinum in a week or so. That game hit so hard for me fresh off the heels of AW2, like I felt it should have the first time. It also did confirm for me though that I think Remedy games are about 10% too hard on normal difficulty, but way too easy on easy.
Alot of your complaints are exactly why I loved the first game. It put an emphasis on exploration and I'm glad they doubled down on that for the sequel and not simplify its mechanics to cater to a wider audience.
Funny that Bless said that about Control. I did this but a little different. I never finished control in 2019. Played Alan wake 2 when it released and immediately went back and finished Control. Definitely a different experience going back, was totally awesome.

I wanted to hear more about the game before purchasing but man, it seems like these people who got the game a week early didn't even bother playing it. Seems like they're used to playing ubisoft games or games with yellow paint.
I'm a little confused about the Iron Man talk. Maybe confusing it with another game? EA Motive announced they were working on Iron Man in mid-2023 and they were presumably working on Dragon Age Dreadwolf before that as a support studio. I assume Iron Man is YEARS away.
I’m totally indifferent to DD2, but I do find it puzzling that the reviews for DD2 are so positive but the KF cast is unanimously underwhelmed by the game. I don’t think there’s any conspiracy here, I just wonder how much groupthink influences these impressions. Yall get what I mean?
I would guess the other reviewers put more than 7 hours into the game before reviewing it. For a game as robust as DD2, I bet it makes a real difference
Casual gamers. How else you get Ratchet n Clank as Goty. Which is totally fine, I just don't think most people watching these videos are casual players.
Because it sounds like they didn't put any time into their review copy. Other reviewers have been playing it for like 20+ hours and have the bigger picture. An hour or two in? Not sure what they could talk about.
It's not that puzzling. They aren't reviewing the game anywhere near it's entirety like journalists from IGN are. They are giving top level thoughts on their very very early impressions. Lots of games require some time for them to grab you. They simply haven't gotten to that part yet. Compare this to other impressions that are the 1st 5-10 hours and I'm sure they're more similar.

I was happy when Blessing seemed to be a nice change up to this but he just feels like part of the machine now.
I really hope the team takes the criticism this episode is getting to heart.
There are clearly a lot of reasons why this video is what it is and it’s understandable how this occurred. But the choice to release it in this state is a mistake in a lot of the audiences eyes and I hope they learn from it and wait til they’re ready next time.
For all the souls fans .. me being Elden ring lover. I just came out from watching fighting Cowboys review of this game and he gave it a 10 out of 10 he said the last he had this much fun was with this game since Elden Ring. Which got me really excited so listening to blessings opinion I think is probably a lot of of us would feel in the beginning, but hopefully, as time goes on things will ramp up because honestly when it comes to these types of games, I listen to mainly cowboy and blessing.
Just to note: Elden Ring has a very VERY strong opener. The tutorial boss is one but also the Tree Sentinel. There are many moments where the game goes from 0-100 which gives players an idea of what to expect from the beginning.
DD2 (or Dragons Dogma in general) is a much slower burn imo. It's more similar to games like The Witcher. The game feels more of a lived in world like Skyrim/Oblivion where it feels like the world kind of just goes around and operates without you while FromSoftware games are like intricately designed levels all interconnected to each other but the placement of obstacles are for the most part static.
There is a lot of Pre-built characters. I think Mike wasn't paying attention lol Also mages, sorcerers, and magick archers all have lock ons lol
Dragon's Dogma is not for everyone. It is also not a Souls game so don't go excepting it to be.
It is Monster Hunter + Devil May Cry.
@@needum9212 Not really. Although when you go with the context that you are being set up for failure by certain NPCs it makes it more enjoyable.
There are consequences for your actions. Even if you do the right thing. NPCs can die.

@@needum9212 The main story wasn't really the strong point of the old one and likely wont be for this. The story is pretty generic all things considered. Dragon steals heart, you need to steal it back, that's about it for both games (happens in first few minutes).
What made the game really good is everything else. The moment to moment of going from A to B, discovering things along the way. Think of games like The Witcher. It's sort of like that. Not as open world but lots of dynamic things happening as you travel.

No but if you’re going to put an impressions video on UA-cam and make it look like the episode is focused on DD2 but then find out all 3 people who played the game put less than 11 hours into the game and only talked about it for 15 min - yea it’s disappointing.
TBF this is how lots of the gaming press think, that’s why many games all get similar review scores across the board even though reviewers always hype on about people having different tastes and “that’s ok”.

If you're wanting to see what the rest of the gaming community say before deciding whether to continue a game or not, then you should just put the controller down. You shouldn't need someone else to tell you whether it's worth playing or not after 7 hours. You should already know by then.
It feels like Andy is the only hardcore gamer at KF anymore, and DD2 is definitely a game for hardcore gamers, wild for Andy to not be here. Also would love to get more hardcore gamers into the crew. (and its totally fine to not be a hardcore gamer, not saying the rest are lesser, just more casual, they play everything on easy which is again, totally fine but will create a different impression than playing a game on medium or hard)
Don't feel obligaed to push for a impressions video. This felt pretty rushed and I raaaaaaaaaaarely feel that when listening to you guys.
Yeah while I just recently got into the original last year and had lots of fun. It seems like optimization and performance is not great all around for this game. Getting great reviews all around though. I will eventually getting this after I finish Rebirth.

I didn’t want to come here to complain but after seeing other, hopefully best friends, feel the same disappointment after listening to this episode. I can tell you tried to let people understand the circumstances of the teams time this week but in the future I would recommend sitting out on first impressions if you don’t have time to adequately give them. Love you all and the work that you do. But I was looking forward to your actual thoughts.

Greg’s perspective is so interesting, because every one of his criticisms boils down to “this isn’t automated and dumbed down enough for me to enjoy it”. Which says a lot about how great of a job DD2 did to make the world more tactile and interactive. You really have to put your full focus into playing it

A lot of people are complaining that the guys didn't spend enough time playing DG2. I think initial impressions are important because it's usually so hard to nail a game introduction. A sizable amount of people don't even finish a game's opening act because it doesn't hook them in. It's a perfectly valid complaint to say that the first few hours aren't interesting.
A game this big at least half should be played to give an adequate impression and or review IMO

Man really wanted to hear their opinions with more time into the game. Most reviewers said it didn't click until 20 hours or so. Seems like they didn't take this game too seriously or give it a proper shake which is disappointing.

Angry Joe takes his time before posting reviews, granted he does it differently than others but people will still tune in to reviews whenever they release. You guys fumbled this one.

Kinda funny really seem to be in the minority when it comes to this game. But still appreciate them giving their honest opinions. I’m still super looking forward to it and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a GOTY contender for me

Theres no game.i would want to get the ff7 remake treatment for the exact reasons Barret said. Taking a game that was once a singular experience and stretching it out across multiple big releases, you can definitely feel the padding. Whether you like that or not is a different story, but i think Persona 3 Reload is a good example of a remake of a widely liked games. Graphical and gameplay overhaul to bring it in line woth the most modern entry

I hope the KF team are reading all these complaints about this impressions video. This is a disservice to KF fans and Capcom. A massive game of this scale cannot have accurate impressions by a team that has a combined 10 hours of game time. Instead, you guys could have played it more and put out the review at a later time. However, you put it out early just to get clicks. To be honest, this is very disappointing. I hope you guys learn from this.
It really seems like the KF team is stretched too thin. Trying to cover too many things (games, movies, TV, etc) with a limited crew of people, trying to make too many shows (Gamescast, Daily, Xcast, PSILY, In Review, Screencast, etc) . I think this episode felt like content for content’s sake, which I don’t say lightly as a long time fan. As many have already pointed out, this episode suffered as a result of half-hearted impressions because KF has too many irons in the fire.
