I loved this video, thank you so much. Do you have a tutorial where you teach us how to use the colorwheel bij making a painting? I would love to see you work with it thinking out loud 🙂
Thank you so much for your videos! You always offer such incredibly helpful advice and your work is so beautiful! I've been enjoying learning to paint portraits in various mediums and your portraits are incredibly inspiring! Thank you for sharing your talent and skills, it is so appreciated!
@@AlainPicard I'm playing around with an old Rembrandt set of mine. I love the way pastels seamlessly go from a drawing medium to a painterly medium if that makes sense. Waiting for some of the softer brands you recommended to arrive in the mail. Thanks again!
Just found your videos and really enjoy them. I'm into watercolor but want to try pastel. I love your initial color studies almost as much as the finest piece!
I started trying pastels on some of my old, muddy watercolor disasters. You can go right over them with vibrant colors and darks...amazing. The same "rules" apply to all forms of media, so I think you would LOVE trying the pastels.
Alain..second viewing of one of your videos in 2 days and was inspired to dust some pastel on my large newsprint pad again. A shame, it turned out so well but will be short lived though each time I use the vibrant colors of pastels I learn more for my oil painting. Your advice was also hammered into my head by a marvelous artist that I have studied with for several years. The thumbnails, color sketches and choice of a color scheme is great advice. BTW..I am sure you are a successful artist but you have another great asset...a voice "made for radio" as an old saying goes. Without giving up what surely is your first love perhaps you should also explore a commercial use of a great baritone voice. I have an old actor friend who when TV and movies were no longer plentiful he turned to commercials with his voice and does quite well on that alone. Won't mention his name because he is well known and was in a long running TV series and many movies (several with John Wayne) but better known now for the distinctive voice. Really enjoy your great teaching.
Hi Max, thanks for the encouragement on my "radio voice." I've heard that quite a bit throughout my life. I even took voiceover lessons for a while. All in all, it has helped the public speaking side of my life, who knows what the future will hold. So glad you were inspired to create in pastel! All the best
I always thought I was subscribed to your channel but I wasn't. Well thank your for This video. I have been painting for years now and color is something I want to get better at.
I've subscribed as I noticed you are one of Emma Colbert's favourite artists. Found your tips extremely helpful and can't wait to put them into practice.
I love the colourwheel you use and I have seen it used by other artists but am unable to source it. Could you advise supplier? Your video shows so clearly how to use this tool when choosing colours which I find so difficult. Thanks for a great demonstration.
Wonderful tips. Thanks Your sister-in-law Sonja is a friend of mine when they lived in Madison. I always welcome tips and thoughts, I enjoy using pastels, oils, watercolors. I'll check out your website. Thanks--Leigh
I just discovered you. Love your style of teaching so much. I'm new to pastels, so I've been doing research on what types of pastels I should get. I've heard that panpastels go much further and don't fill up the tooth as fast as the sticks. Which do you prefer? Both kinds are very expensive so I would prefer buying one or the other plus pencils. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. You might not believe this, but I actually just discovered you after looking through some of my old Artist magazines that I saved for inspiration after our kids got older and I'd have more time for art! It was the September 2003 issue, and your work back then was just as captivating!
Wow, thanks for the backstory, Mish R., that is amazing! I remember way back in 2003, that was thrilling to be featured as a young artist at the time. So glad you found the channel here!
@@AlainPicard You're welcome! It's kind of funny since the internet is even my primary means of discovering others. In your case, I thought I'd take a chance and look you up. It was so nice to see that you are still going strong in the art world. Many artists don't last very long.
Hi Alain - I am an artist in the Colorado mountains. I have taken lots of art classes in the past but don’t have access to them here in our small town. Your videos have been so helpful in developing my pastel style. I’m also in recovery from a brain surgery so this is art therapy for me as well! Do you have tips for deciding when to use both warm and cool colors in a painting? Thanks!
Dear Kim, thank you for sharing your kind words with me. I'm humbled and thrilled to hear that I've been able to encourage your creative development and style. I pray that your brain will awaken to full capacity and function again on the other side of this surgery, and your artistic abilities will soar. One simple tip about warm and cool might be that if the light source is warm, use cool colors in the shadows. If the light source is cool (eg. north light) then use warm colors in the shadows. Also apply this with complementary colors. Use a complement of the light source in the shadows. For instance, warm yellow light- use violet in the shadows. All the best!
Alain Picard Thanks! Great tips. I also took your advice about pastels and bought a set from Terry Ludwig. Actually went to their place in Littleton CO and met the man himself! I was visiting my daughters for Christmas and they took me. My recent pastels inspired by your online tutorials at khalpern.faso.com
Just trying to get as much information as I can, I have some 90% alcohol from my marker collection can I use it for under painting? I am also considering investing in more than just pastel pencils, I did watch your video about which pastels to get but don’t remember you mentioning Rembrandt soft pastels, are they a good idea or should I avoid them? These are from Royal Talens in the Netherlands. Thank you for sharing your expertise and being so encouraging. Have A wonderful day.
Thank you Alain for those amazing tips
I’m really enjoying your videos and getting so much from them! Thanks so much for making them and inspiring us all to be fabulous artists 🎉
Gracias. Primer proyecto: voy aplicar estos tips 😀😀😀

John holldolms thanks, that has been my mission to help people like you grow and feel empowered to develop your creative potential.

I love this Alain! Great review of what you taught in class. I miss studying with you in Southbury. Please come to Arizona!!
Nice to hear from you. We miss having you at the classes as well. A workshop in Arizona sounds great!
Thank you Alain!!! This video was a big help! Going to get my pastels out today.
Glad to hear it, take a risk and try something new!
You are so right..."it doesn't have to be perfect!"
You're just about the most helpful painter online. Not sure why I avoided pastels for so long (maybe because of the dust, ha ha). Thanks!
Now that means the world to me, thank you! I really appreciate the feedback! Pastel is a true joy, I hope you'll give it a try!

aw, you're so encouraging, Alain :)
JAsisterti thanks alot! Just want to help you all to keep moving forward in your creative journey. All the best!
I like the 20 mark challenge for thumbnails. You really can’t allocate any of those to details. I will definitely try that.
I like to know want brand of oil paint do you use
I like a few different brands. Rembrandt and Windsor & Newton primarily. Old Holland and Gamblin occasionally as well.
❤💯👍👍👍
You are so good...beautiful
That's very kind Love My Voice USA, thank you.
