You run into people like that in every walk of life, not just cast iron. You tried to help him and he won’t listen. All you can do is shrug it off & try to help somebody else, down the road. But you tried, good for you!!! Dan & Cindy

Honey j, I couldn’t agree with you more!! Some people just don’t want the help, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink…. You did the right thing and you tried!

I have ran into a few like that. A lady had some old unmarked Wagners labeled imports so i let her know. She decided to tell me that i was clueless and that she knew cast iron. Then right beside it was a marked Wagner smooth bottom she wanted twice the value for. She told me she had a Wagner guy who would buy any she wanted to sell. I told her that if she actually sold it for that price to her Wagner guy, then he needs to come see me because i had about 20 of them for him.

If I believed the story about The Favorite marked and unmarked Columbus Hollow Ware skillets, I would say I have one of each. I'm more inclined to believe the unmarked one was made by somebody else using a The Favorite skillet for their mold. Can I prove it? Does me believing it make it true? No, it doesn't.
The one marked The Favorite, I bought from a place that buys and sells estates. I paid $9.95 (I save my tags). I checked Ebay and they were listed around 3 times that. I did see them run up to 10 times $40 on Ebay but, they're less now. The unmarked one, a neighbor gave me.
I don't know about everywhere but, here, the sales and prices for cast iron cookware have fallen. Today I saw 30 pieces of cast iron for $350 asking price marked down from $450 asking price. It's mostly skillets, Griswolds, Wagners. BSRs, Lodges, unmarked and too much crud to see what they are. If it sells soon, I bet it sells for less than $350. My theory; collectors are in the same boat I am, old and not buying cast iron anymore. I think the newbies that were buying vintage cast iron are now buying Finex, Stargazer, Field, Butter Pat, Staub, Smithey and the smart ones are buying Lodge because cast iron is cast iron. I like the old stuff, have lots of it but, honestly, I use new Lodge more than half the time.

If I see something interesting at a good price, I'll pick it up. Otherwise, I've got no need to help inflate the cost of used pots and pans. It's damn good cookware but it's plenty abundant and not a single piece of it is the holy grail of cooking. As you said, cast iron is cast iron.
I think pandemic boredom created a pretty big spike in collecting but like everything else folks did at that time, they're starting to get bored with it. Their kayaks and bicycles are collecting dust. The dogs they adopted are back at the shelter. The things they collected are on eBay for as much as they can manage to get for them. It is what it is.

Ahh well. You tried. All you can do is try to do whats right and if they don't want to learn something it's on them. Some people are simply unteachable. I appreciate your attitude about the collecting. Its all about having fun and learning about the hobby. Meeting other collectors can be fun too. Depending on their attitude. Peace n love man.

Seen a Wagner pan the other day at an antique/junk shop that got me exited for a second until I seen “made in china” on the bottom. Never came across one of those before.😮

After 1996 the pans were made off shore for awhile then discontinued,

A great many "collectors" have that buzz-saw attitude. Must be some tendency to that personality trait.
I like the other, thankfully more prevalent trait of sharing an interest and trading acquired knowledge.
I just play dumb with the grumps, listen if interested, then move on.

That's a great attitude to have, collecting is about fun, interest, and enjoying knowledge obtained from other's, I enjoy talking to other collectors.
