  • I had a question from one of my viewers today wondering if her unmarked vintage cast iron skillet was a Wagner Ware Sidney O made in Ohio, U.S.A.
    There are definitely tell-tale signs of design features that will usually tell you if you have one or not. I have two #3 cast iron skillets. One is unmarked and the other is a marked Wagner Ware. I give a side-by-side comparison so you can tell if you have an unmarked Wagner. This will also help you recognize them when hunting for them out in the wild.     I love myself a CRUSTY Wagner Ware, they always turn up to be extremally smooth under all of that crud.

      Yes, they do! My only thing with Wagner is that many of them are warped or slightly warped and don't sit flat. I am not sure why that is, but it has been my experience when compared with Griswold. Thanks for watching!

    I have a pan I purchased from Goodwill that was utterly destroyed, crusted over. It appears to be an unmarked Wagner. It has everything but the makers mark at 6 o'clock on the bottom of the pan. It does have a D though on the back of the handle, under the triangle an inch above the tear drop. It has two spouts on the sides, a Number 7 at the top of the handle, on the back it has 9 1/2 inch Skillet written towards the bottom, no letter underneath though. Then it has a D on the handle before the tear drop. Spins like a top on my marble counter but looking at it from the side doesn't look warped. I soaked in vinegar water for a day didn't do much good. Ended up putting in in the oven through a cleaning cycle and that took care of it. Have seasoned it through the oven about 10 times now. It looks pretty good. So what do you think? Wagner? Pre 1960? It also has that rim around the outside edge. No made in USA.

    Got a Wagnerware 8inch cast iron skillet at a thrift store today. I'm in love with the smooth finish. Named him Angus. Gonna look for more vintage cast iron now. (most of my are modern and only started using cast iron in 2019

      I went through what you are going through now back in 2016 when I was a bit turned off from the modern Lodge (too heavy) instead looking for the vintage stuff. I found lots of it and restored most of it to resell and have kept many of them for my own collection. However, I have found that cracks are showing up more often than ever and it simply isn't worth the wear and tear on my newer oven, so I am using what I have. Best of luck on your hunts. I did have a ton of fun when hunting for it!

      Great idea! I suppose I could do one although I haven't actually focused on this for quite a while. I could do one on acquiring water, storage, and use and just update it from an earlier video. Water is one of those things you will need for survival if SHTF! lol

    Great information👍Almost all unmarked Wagners I find spin on my glass top, great on gas range or electric coil.

      That is something that I noticed over the years about Wagners that they have a tendency to spin or move on a flat surface. You don't see it so much with Griswold, Vollrath, BSR, and other makers. That said, thanks for watching!

    This helped me figure out what my skillet is, thank you! It used to be my Dad's and I know he used it when camping over an open fire. Even after multiple cleanings, I couldn't get the corrosion off the bottom, but I could see that something was printed towards the bottom on the underside of the skillet. It had the number 5 on top of the handle and a dot on the triangular base on the underside of the handle with the 'X' makers mark below it, so that helped me identify what it was! It also has the circular mill and no spin. Happy that I can use something that my Dad did way back when!

    I have a Lodge skillet that is a "spinner" but it sure makes a fantastic dish for baking (especially pies and cake layers).

    Great video! Very informative. Thank you!. I have a little skillet marked with the Stylized W in Wagner Ware, then stamped out "6 1/2 inch skillet", second line "made in USA", third line "Z". It has the tear drop in the handle, very faint triangle on the sidewall, and narrow faint border. Just wondering if it's legit or a knock off of some sort.Thank you!

    This was a very informative video. I pulled out my cast iron skillets that were given to me by my grandmother. I was able to identify two unmarked skillets as Wagner by locating the small triangle mark on the backside of the handle - great tip, thank you. My question is I have another skillet that is marked Wagnerware Sidney O on the back, upper portion. The lower portion says 8 I. However, the backside of the handle does not have the triangle mark, it has a sharp edge in the middle of the handle that goes from the open hole in the handle up into the side of the skillet. Do you know what that would be?

    Thanks for sharing. I was told I had an unmarked Wagner, but there is no marking at all on the bottom. Do they always have inch marking on Wagner unmarked on the bottom.

    I picked up a mystery skillet last weekend. Has the ears not as pronounced as a Griswold. Handle has the triangle on the bottom. Has a squared "8" on top of the handle, all like a Wagner however, Does not have a pronounced ridge around the top edge. Also there are no markings what so ever on the back. It is smooth and cook's very well with slight spin. Do you have any idea what it could be?

      Nevermind, looks exactly like, perhaps, a copy? of a Griswold #8 Large Logo - Block Letter.
      Circa 1935. Found one for sale on eBay. So now, I have to ask, is there any value to it? Is it a copy?

    I think I have an unmarked Wagner. It says “9 inch skillet”. The top handle mark is either a “6” or a “9” with an underside handle “S” marking. It has no heat ring on the underside bottom and a ridge like you showed in both of yours. I swear it has the faintest hint of a swooping “R” part of a “W” and a definite “A” on the top quadrant. They are so faint as to be barely visible in the right light. Im so fascinated to find out more about this one.

    I have an unmarked cast iron with a single letter U at 6 o'clock position. I know its before 1960 and probably before 1940 because of the heat ring but no clue what company casted it.

    In my humble opinion the unmarked skillet is a Griswold unmarked pan. The ONLY feature separating these two pans is the teardrop handles. The unmarked pan has a rounded teardrop pattern. The marked pan has a true teardrop. Out in the wild I’ve found numerous unmarked pans like these shown. Some have the identical teardrop handled pans like the Wagner and that makes them Wagners. Others have the rounded teardrop as yours. I believe they’re Griswolds. My guess is they were Griswolds make after Wagner purchased the Griswold company in the late fifties. Pure speculation on my part. The handle defines the pan mold and origin.

      Thank you! I think a great many unmarked skillets were made for department stores like Montgomery Wards or Woolworths so more people could afford them. They were cheaper without the label so they could be marketed to these types of dept stores to reach more people.

    Why are some wagner ware skillets unmarked? Beed researching and I cannot find the reason they didn't put a logo on all their pans? I have one marked and one unmarked.

      It is my understanding that Wagner produced pans for department stores like Mongomery Wards so they could sell the same pan for less due to no logo. Hope this helps.

      Wagner made pans in several finishes, one being a milled cooking surface. I love the way they look!

    We have a smooth cooking surface 10 inch cast iron skillet that is only marked "TAIWAN" on the underside. It was acquired by us with the purchase of a hunting camp in 1971. It's in great condition and is my go to for general usage. Any input on it's origins would be appreciated.

    I have a 9" unmarked Wagner skillet with a mold mark Q , when was this made ? Its a family hand me down and I am trying to know who it could have belonged to.

      Does it say, MADE IN USA on the bottom? If not, then I would safely say any time before 1960. It would truly be a vintage item!

    Have you ever come across a cast iron camp cooker with feet and recessed lid but instead of a bail it has a handle. My mother had one and we used every time we went camping. She would even cook biscuits in it on the campfire. We were moving one time and my sister was taking it into the house and a snake crawled out from the porch and she used the skillet to try and kill it and the handle broke off in her hand. Don't remember if she killed the snake we were more worried about what mama was gonna say about the skillet. I sure would like to know if anyone has ever seen one like that, I haven't been able to find anything online.

      Not usually, but it depends on who cast them. For example Vollrath skillets are highly collectible, so they are worth more than say Wagner just because they are Vollrath. That said, most Vollrath are unmarked, so if you ever found one that is marked, then it would have a higher value because the marked ones are very rare. Hope this helps.

      I have no idea. It would depend on condition, the manufacturer, whether it be used or restored condition, and how rare it is. That would be a #12 size based on the 13 in measurement just so you know. Hope this helps.

    haha Then there's my way, if it's not a Lodge or BSR it's an unmarked Wagner. As a collector I don't have time or space for unmarked or Made In USA skillets so I'm not picking them up anyway. It really is funny, I tend to call a lot of skillets with the triangle on the handle an unmarked Wagner some may even be a Wagner?

      LOL Well, from my experience most of the triangle area on the back of the handle turn out to be unmarked Wagners. The BSR has a ridge that goes all the way to the side walls. The lodge tends to flatten out much more than Wagner also from my experience. That said, I too try and avoid skillets with Made in USA stamp on them, but those with the Griswold logo on them with that stamp hold their value and if I find a size I'm looking for, then I will pick it up.

      @@ladylibertystacker2014 I picked up a #14 two weekends ago that really hung me up. I could tell it was a nice casting with a smooth cooking surface so the quality was there. It had the #14 at the 12:00 position, a slightly rounded helper handle, with a Lodge handle BUT it had a solid inside heat ring. Come to find out it was a Lodge without the one or three notch which puts it in the 1910 to 1930 range. Probably late 20s pre one notch without the arch Lodge stamp. It's in great shape and the lady dropped $50 down to $100 so I couldn't pass that up. I bought an unmarked Wagner and figured it out after I got home. lol
      I live in SE Tennessee which is Lodge country but I seldom see anything larger than the occasional #10
