Tom Durkin is an absolute legend. What a terrific call. One of the great announcers of the modern era.

Easy Goer fulfilled the great expectations embodied in his frame and authored an unforgettable Hall of Fame racing career, and he is mentioned in the same breath with the greatest horses of all time. Even Hall of Fame champion Easy Goer's few narrow defeats did nothing to dispel the notion that Easy Goer was one of the best of all-time; the brilliance in his performances were worthy of only a highly special racehorse. Even his scarce, slim losses were resounding; there was never any quit in Easy Goer. Even certifiable legends are allowed some transgressions and losses, and Easy Goer would summon up enough class, courage and heart even in his infrequent, tight losses. He always ran well and was right there even in his close defeats." - In Easy Goer's Hall of Fame induction article in BloodHorse magazine.

The Drug-free Eclipse Award Champion & Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer will always be the Drug-Free Eclipse Award Champion and Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion, and the most coveted honor and prize, by far, is being inducted in the Hall of Fame, and Easy Goer did it drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs; while the drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence needed and was given performance enhancing drugs (Clenbuterol, etc) to barely beat the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer by the narrowest of margins in a few races. When ss was forced to run drug-free without any drugs (and without ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill) in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs - and as importantly also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well - ss was Crushed by the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer. And as importantly ss's veterinarian Alex Harthill fully voluntarily admitted that he gave illegal performance enhancing drugs (Clenbuterol, etc) to ss; but Harthill could NOT do so in the only state in the whole country during that era which banned all drugs - and as importantly banned the illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well. The 3-1 means as much or as little as Noor 4, Triple Crown winner Citation 1; Beau Purple 3, Hall of Fame Champion & HOY Kelso 1; Alsab 2, Triple Crown winner Whirlaway 1; Big Spruce 2, Hall of Fame Champion & HOY Forego 1; Wajima 2, Forego 1; Cabrini Green 4, Hall of Fame Champion & HOY John Henry 0; Darby Creek Road 3, John Henry 0; Gallant Bloom 4, Hall of Famer Shuvee 1; Damascus 2, Dr Fager 2; Akureyri 3, Eclipse Award Champion Pleasant Colony 1; Formal Gold 4, Hall of Fame Champion & HOY Skip Away 2; Billy Kelly 8, Triple Crown winner Sir Barton 4; Summer Squall 4, Eclipse Award Champion Unbridled 2; Bayern 2, HOY & Eclipse Award Champion California Chrome 1; Star of Cozzene 3, HOY & Eclipse Award Champion Kotashaan 1; and an endless amount of others. The Classic Distance for the whole world is 12f, but Easy Goer won G1's drug-free at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f with much less time and rest between races and ran many more career races; while the drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence only won G1's with drugs at 9f to 10f with much more time and rest between races and ran far less career races. The Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer's body of work & career accomplishments are far superior to ss's as well.
The litmus test of a champion is winning drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs; & during that era New York was the only state in the entire country that banned all drugs. Plus, as importantly, New York banned the illegal criminal veterinarian of sunday silence Alex Harthill [arrested an endless amount of times for illegally drugging an endless amount of horses]. During that era, it was a huge credit to NY [& the rest of the whole world] that the endless amount of their championship G1 races stood as humongous, gigantic obstacles to drug-dependent horses like ss; and these horses, like ss, and many others, got exposed badly when they were forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. ONLY no-drugs drug-free races were/are true championship races. Only the drug-free no-drugs races could/can be called championship races. Only No-drug drug-free races kept/keep the outcomes crystal clear. No-drug drug-free races are the only true tests of champions. That is integrity, honesty, fair play & complete fairness for all. And, Alex Harthill confessed to illegally giving illegal performance enhancing drugs (Clenbuterol, etc) to ss; but he couldn't do so in the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs and banned Alex Harthill as well. New York by far ran/runs the most Prestigious, Championship G1 races in the USA with by far the highest purse money in the country; NY was/is by far the best racing circuit in the USA; champions are crowned and championships are won on the Championship Tracks in New York - they are by far the fairest tracks in the USA in New York, with Belmont Park being by far the fairest of them all, because they are all larger tracks with large, sweeping turns where horses run as fast around the bigger turns as they do on straightaways - (although I will note all these larger tracks in and out of NY with circumferences larger than a mile - Saratoga, Arlington, Hollywood, Hialeah, Aqueduct, Laurel, Woodbine, Atlantic City, Keeneland, Ellis, Colonial, Kentucky Downs, and the new Gulfstream); NY was and still is the Center of Racing in the USA; and most importantly, there are over 200 horses in the Hall of Fame and no matter where they were/are/will be based, 99% of them ran/run/will run in NY for the reasons listed above.

Easy Goer was great everywhere he ran, and he loved racing everywhere. During that
era, New York was alone [in the US] and was the only state
that had the courage to ban all race-day drugs and medications. It was
to New York's credit that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other
huge, historic, prestigious G1 races in NY stood as a huge obstacle to a
drug-dependent horse. Winning any big race on medication was/is not
what racing is about; and they were commonly and legally used in all the
sport's most prestigious races run outside New York. Only the drug-free
medication-free races could/can be called championship events in my
opinion. New York's no-medication no-drug rules during that
era kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow
race-day drugs was a big factor in keeping New York's major races the
true tests of champions in that era. Champions are born, made, based
and/or trained anywhere in the world, but most American champions are
still crowned having run in the major races in New York. The
championship races in NY carried, and still carry, a lot of weight; and
his connections ran him mostly in these championship, drug free NY
    races. And New York
was and still is the most prominent racing circuit in North America.
New York was the ONLY state in the entire country that banned ALL
race-day drugs and medications. Most connections decisions not to run
in NY was influenced mostly by New York's no-medication rules more than
anything else. The connections of many many top horses, including Summer
Squall, Best Pal, Dance Smartly, Hollywood Wildcat, Tight Spot,
Paseana, Blushing John, Lost Code, Desert Wine, Snow Chief, Wild Again,
Tank's Prospect, Skywalker, King Glorious, Spend a Buck, Great
Communicator, Infinidad, Capote, Sunny's Halo, Gate Dancer, The Wicked
North, Suave Prospect, Tejano Run, Lil E. Tee, etc., freely admitted
that their horses could not compete in top company without the drugs and
medications, and never [or very rarely] ran them in the
prominent, illustrious races in drug free New York. In doing that, they
came clean with the fans, bettors, breeders and the Eclipse Award
voters. These horses trainers and connections would pass up these drug
free races - and if they ran in them they were often exposed for what
they were by not running well - if that was not already apparent from
them having skipped [and/or not run well] most of these drug free,
illustrious Grade 1 races in NY with huge purses.
Easy Goer won outside NY when he won the Swale Stakes running the
fastest seven furlongs of the year in Florida; he lost by inches in the
Preakness in Maryland and by a rapidly diminishing neck in the Classic
in Florida running extremely fast to his great rival. Some would say
these two close losses were among his most impressive races. And I
quote: "Some would say it was much more about the sizes and
circumferences of the tracks with SS possibly
having an advantage on smaller, tighter-turned mile tracks; and Easy
Goer possibly having an advantage on bigger, wider turned mile and an
eighth or bigger tracks. But track sizes and circumferences, region,
    state and
drugs/medications are just a few of the numerous, endless variables and
factors. SS's record win-loss % on mile-and-eighth or larger tracks was
very similar to EG's record win-loss % of on smaller mile tracks. There
is also the facts about the distances and amount of time between their
so called 'prep' races and schedules: Easy Goer ran many more career
races [and ran a much more strenuous post Triple Crown campaign than
SS]. EG also ran a record mile in the Gotham, then only 2 weeks later
    won the
Wood Memorial, then only 2 weeks later the start of the Triple Crown
races - total of 5 races in 9 weeks. SS ran his final TC prep 4 weeks
before the start of the TC races. EG ran a longer-distanced 1 1/2miles
prep against older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup before the BC
Classic, and beat older horses while conceding weight in a numerous big
races before in the Woodward, Whitney and Travers; while SS had one
slow, easy 10f prep restricted to 3 year olds in the 3 months leading
into the BC Classic. We both also have to realize that these are just a
few of the numerous variables, and cannot be simplified when there are
many more factors and variables. It is much more complicated than that
given the myriad variables that determine the outcome of races. Failing
to factor the numerous other variables in can lead to the wrong
conclusions about why horses win or lose races. Could it be that it
makes no sense to look at cause and effect simplistically because other
variables may have determined the outcome? Just because the Earth looks
flat based on the way we actually see it, does not mean that it is
    flat."
Belmont Park was, is and will always be "The Championship Track" because
nearly every major American champion - and Hall of Famer - in racing
history has competed on the racetrack. West-coast based Hall of Fame
jockey Gary Stevens, "Belmont Park is by far the fairest track in
America. If you’re on the best horse, you have plenty of room to
navigate. The best horse almost always wins at Belmont Park."
West-coast based Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, "It's not even
close. Belmont is the fairest of all American tracks. The track is big,
and you don't get jammed up like you do on most other tracks because of
the tighter turns. And speed, tactical speed, versatility and handiness
are still needed. While a horse can win with any style at Belmont,
there is a false perception that in the "The Test of the Champion"
Belmont Stakes - or at Belmont in general - that you can come from left
field and run down tired horses in front. But the truth is you really
have to be in the mix. You really need to be on or near the lead within
striking distance, and/or have tactical speed and not drop too far out
of it. " West-coast based Hall of Fame rider Laffit Pincay, "Belmont
Park is the best by far. Everything is perfect-it's just a wonderful
track. The big wide track is great for horses." West-coast based Hall
of Fame rider Bill Shoemaker, "Belmont Park, it's ideal. Belmont Park
has the best track with it's fine surface and size. It's wide and
    wonderful. Big, wide
sweeping turns and long straightaways. Riders and horses seldom bunch
and jam, and a horse can run the turns as fast as the straightaways."

The True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer cremated the drug-reliant & banned illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence when ss was forced to run drug-free without any drugs in the only state in the entire country during that era that banned all drugs, & as importantly also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Harthill as well. The True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer cremated the very good Is It True 3 times in 3 races previously by a combined 11 lengths, 2 of them being drug-free G1 races, the G1 Champagne & G1 Cowdin, when both were forced to run drug-free without any drugs in the only state in the entire country during that era that banned all drugs. Easy Goer had obliterated Is It True 3 times before. Easy Goer beat him by 4 lengths in the Champagne when he ran one of the fastest all time runnings. Easy Goer beat by 4 lengths in the Cowdin when that race was a prestigious G-1. And Easy Goer beat him easily in a maiden race. Like Steve Haskin stated, "Easy Goer and his puffy, giant, bad ankles just floundered over that specific Churchill mud." Like many greats that hated Churchill: Holy Bull,Easy Goer,Skip Away,Go For Wand,Point Given, etc.

"Sunday Silence had been TREATED WITH DRUGS in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness & Breeders' Cup Classic when edging Easy Goer, but couldn't for the Belmont Stakes in New York, the one state where all drugs are banned. Easy Goer was free from all of the controversies & debates about drugs, for ALL DRUGS are prohibited in New York, as they are in the rest of the racing world outside the US. The key questions that influenced racing all year was: Could Sunday Silence beat Easy Goer without drugs? Could Sunday Silence win without drugs? He gave definitive & assertive replies to the questions: NO. Sunday Silence struggled home edging Le Voyageur but was thoroughly beaten, as the splendid Easy Goer sprinted off with the Belmont Stakes. Racing should be filled with SUPERIOR horses like EASY GOER, who did NOT require ANY drugs to perform at his best, & NOT DRUG-RELIANT horses like SUNDAY SILENCE, so we focus our attention on the sport instead of drugs. Racing wears drugs like festering, self-inflicted wounds on the end of its nose opened by the ax of greed & stamped with the endorsements of every racing commission in the nation except New York's. Racing's drug dependency, like any drug problem, has become a major problem & tarnished the sport. It is to New York's merit & acclaim that their major races stand as giant hurdles to drug-reliant horses. Winning major races on drugs is not what racing is about." Paul Moran of DRF, LA TImes & Newsday.

The True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer won outside drug-free NY, & won 6 races away from his drug-free home track, & only lost by the slimmest of margins in other races to drug-reliant horses like ss who had been given Performance Enhancing Drugs. POOR sunday silence was a drug-reliant horse; POOR ss was a banned illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant horse; POOR ss needed to bring his one sized small 8f track with him! POOR ss needed everything perfectly set up for him; POOR ss needed the perfect run & trip set up for him, POOR ss needed FIXED races set up for him. Of course the True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer WON OUTSIDE drug-free NY (The only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs, & as importantly also banned ss's illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill as well), & EG won 6 races away from his drug-free home track. ss won ZERO races (ss got cremated) when he was forced to run drug-free (The True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer won 14 races drug-free w/o any drugs) without all of his banned illegal performance enhancing drugs (Clenbuterol, Sublimaze, Etorphine, Banamine, Furosemide, etc); ss LOST all races (ss got obliterated) when he was forced to run drug-free (Easy Goer won 14 races drug-free without any drugs) without all of his banned illegal performance enhancing drugs (Clenbuterol, Etorphine, Sublimaze, Banamine, Furosemide, etc); ss also won ZERO races (ss got pulverized) when he was forced to run without his banned illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill; ss LOST ALL races (ss got smashed) when he was forced to run without his banned illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill; ss also LOST 4 races on bigger tracks (Easy Goer won on all 3 sized tracks - 8f, 9f & 12f sized tracks) with circumferences larger than 8f; ; ss only won G1 races at 9f to 10f only with illegal performance enhancing drugs & only on small 8f sized tracks with much more time & rest between races & ran far less career races; the True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer won G1 races at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f & 12f drug-free w/o any drugs on all 3 sized tracks (8f, 9f & 12f) on sloppy, wet, muddy, & fast tracks with much less time & rest between races & ran far more career races, & ran faster times at all distances & ran far superior speed figures & far superior performance ratings at all distances. Easy Goer won on muddy, wet & sloppy tracks & ran 7f in a blazing 1:22 in one of them, and 10f in 2:01 (25 lengths faster than ss ran 10f in mud) in the other on muddy, wet & sloppy tracks. POOR sunday silence was a drug-reliant horse; POOR ss was a banned illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant horse; POOR ss needed to bring his ped drugs & one sized small 8f track with him. POOR ss needed everything perfectly set up for him; POOR ss needed the perfect run & trip set up for him, POOR ss needed FIXED races set up for him.

Indeed Easy Goer did easily defeat Is It True three times previously that year by a combined 11 lengths or so - which earned Easy Goer champion two year old honors. Easy Goer also beat him in fourteen - karat performances. In the seven furlong maiden, Easy Goer beat Is It True and ran about 12 lengths (two and two - fifth seconds) faster than the other maiden race that was run earlier in the day at the same distance. In Easy Goer's next race, he came within two fifths of a second of the six and a half furlong track record. Then Easy Goer won two Grade 1's defeating Is It True again in both by four lengths in each - including coming within two fifths of a second of the stakes record for the mile G1 Champagne Stakes. All with aplomb and very easily, and with problematic ankles, clubfeet, deformed, irregular legs, and sore shins (which necessitated pinfiring). It was amazing that Easy Goer's class, heart & talent got him seconds in the mud at Churchill. I say that because Easy Goer didn't even run like the shadow of his normal great self. It did look as if the entire field was running in peanut butter quicksand in them, though Churchill tends to produce very slow times when they have a wet track (muddy or sloppy). To paraphrase, "Easy Goer's
only so called slow timed performances occurred at Churchill Downs when the track was muddy and every horse in those races ran very slow as a result. The only times that EG ran slowly was in the mud at Churchill Downs and that conceivably had MUCH to do with track conditions and the FACT that he did not like CD mud."

+Ari Dovid Enough with these lame excuses. He was a NY horse. That couldn't get the job done outside of NY. Where did he beat Is It True in NY. Not in KY sir. When Easy Goer lost which was every time he left NY was just ordinary. He is one of the most overrated horses I have ever seen. An east coast overrated phony legend

+MrFinsforlife Forego, Kelso and Easy Goer must have all been east coast NY ordinary, overrated, phonies; and Beholder, Zenyatta, Ack Ack and Native Diver must all have been west coast CA ordinary, overrated phonies too. New York also was the only state in America that didn't permit any drugs and medications, and his old timer old school owner mostly ran him in the big, prestigious G1 races in NY. As Steve Haskin stated, "During that era NY was the center of the racing universe. New York STILL hosts the endless tides of champions to this day. Champions are made anywhere in the world, but most American champions are still crowned having run in the big races in New York. Almost every single Hall of Fame horse ran -- or will run -- in numerous big races in NY, regardless of where they were/are born, based or trained." And as Matt Hegarty stated recently in April on drf's website, "New York was and STILL IS the most prominent racing circuit in North America."
Your statements are also false and wrong. If he was ordinary, etc., than SS was also ordinary, overrated and a phony because only an eye-lash separated these two greats. What separated Easy Goer and Sunday Silence was microscopical, and they were both great. Easy Goer won outside NY when he won the Swale S. in Florida running the swiftest seven panels of the year; he lost by an eye-lash in the Preakness in Maryland and by a rapidly diminishing neck in the Classic in Florida running extremely fast to -- according to you -- an ordinary, overrated phony in SS. I think it was more about the sizes and circumferences of the tracks with SS possibly having an advantage on smaller, tighter-turned mile tracks, and Easy Goer possibly having an advantage on bigger, wider turned mile and an eighth or bigger tracks; but track sizes and circumferences, region, and drugs/medications are just a few of the numerous, endless variables and factors. SS's record win-loss % on mile-and-eighth or larger tracks was very similar to EG's record win-loss % of on smaller mile tracks. There is also the facts about the distances and amount of time between their so called 'prep' races and schedules: Easy Goer ran many more career races [and ran a much more strenuous post Triple Crown campaign than SS]. EG
also ran a record mile in the Gotham, then only 2 weeks later won the
Wood Memorial, then only 2 weeks later the start of the Triple Crown races - total of 5 races in 9 weeks. SS ran his final TC prep 4 weeks before the start of the TC races. EG ran a longer-distanced 1 1/2miles prep against older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup before the BC Classic, and beat older horses while conceding weight in a numerous big races before in the Woodward, Whitney and Travers; while SS had one slow, easy 10f prep restricted to 3 year olds in the 3 months leading into the BC Classic. We both also have to realize that these are just a few of the numerous variables, and cannot be simplified when there are many more factors and variables. It is much more complicated than that given the myriad variables that determine the outcome of races. Failing to factor the numerous other variables in can lead to the wrong conclusions about why horses win or lose races. Could it be that it makes no sense to look at cause and effect simplistically because other variables may have determined the outcome? Just because the Earth looks flat based on the way we actually see it, does not mean that it is flat.

+MrFinsforlife Nonsense. ss also was ordinary, overrated and phony then. New York was the ONLY state back then in the entire country that didn't allow any drugs or medications. But of course Easy Goer won outside New York, and in the process he ran the fastest 7 furlongs of the year in Florida
while doing so - in the Swale Stakes. Easy Goer also got beat inches and
a desperate neck in Maryland and Florida running extremely fast races in the
process. He was just as brilliant. New York also was the ONLY state in
the entire country that banned all drugs and medications back then. That
is also like saying that ss was nothing but ordinary, overrated and phony if the races were
at his home track at Hollywood Park in California (ss lost 3 of 5
races), or in drug free and medication free races, or on 9f or larger
circumferenced tracks (ss lost 4 of 6). Easy Goer also won over all
major track sizes (8f,9f & 12f ovals), SS did not. SS also had a
losing record over 9f or larger tracks. SS also had a losing record at
his home track at Hollywood in California. Easy Goer won Grade 1 races
      7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f. SS won Grade 1 races only at 9f to 10f. Easy
Goer also won on muddy or sloppy tracks TWICE while running
extremely fast races (7f and 10f) in the process. Both greats, but In my
opinion Easy Goer was a better horse than SS, and had a superior body
of work and career than SS. But of course, once again, better in any way
is still totally subjective and true in the eyes of the beholder. It
certainly is NOT the end of any story, enough said, nor proved anything
etc. Just as the head to head scoreboards are NOT enough said or end of
story (nor 'proved anything') for Citation (lost 4 of 5 to Noor), Kelso
(lost 3 of 4 to Beau Purple), Dr Fager (lost 2 of 4 to Damascus), Forego
(lost 2 of 3 to Big Spruce and Wajima), John Henry, Pleasant Colony,
Sir Barton, Skip Away and many many more.
That is like stating the legendary Forego didn't, wouldn't and couldn't
win outside of NY. Easy Goer actually did, while Forego actually did
NOT. Easy Goer DID WIN outside of New York. Thats like saying SS
couldn't, wouldn't or didn't win at his home track of Hollywood in his
home state of California (lost 3 of 5 races), or on 9f or larger tracks
(ss lost 4 of 6) - or in drug and medication free races. Even though SS
had a losing record at his home track of Hollywood Park in California -
he still was able to win there even though he had that losing record.
Ditto Easy Goer outside of NY. Easy Goer DID WIN outside of NY, and in
the process ran a record seven furlongs in Florida in the Swale. He did
lose by inches and a rapidly diminishing neck outside of NY - but he
only ran a few times outside of NY and FL. Hall of Fame champion Easy
Goer won over FOUR different tracks. SS won over SIX different tracks.
He gets credit for that yes. SS had a losing record at his home track
at Hollywood Park - losing three races there. Easy Goer was mainly run
in NY and Florida in the majority of his races - seventeen of his
twenty races. The historic NY races carried and still carry a lot of
weight. Hall of Fame champion Easy Goer was similar in this regard to
other Hall of Fame champions like Forego, Kelso, Arts and Letters, Tom
Fool, Sword Dancer, etc. Just the same as big races in CA - those races
carried a lot of weight for champions like Ack Ack, Native Diver, Noor,
Ferdinand, Kotashaan, Zenyatta, Beholder etc. EG won over all major
track sizes, SS did not. SS had a losing record over 9f or larger
tracks. SS also had a losing record at his home track at Hollywood in
      California. EG won Grade 1 races 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f. SS won Grade 1
races only at 9f to 10f.
Better in any way is subjective and true in the eyes of the beholder.
Many many greats were behind or tied on the head to head (series)
scoreboard, including Citation, Kelso, Easy Goer, Forego, Skip Away, Dr
Fager, Damascus, Arts and Letters, Swaps, Nashua, Round Table, Ancient
Title, John Henry, Unbridled, Silverbulletday, Serenas Song,
Pleasant Colony, Sir Barton, Ferdinand, Native Diver, and many many
others. Were the horses who were ahead (or tied) on the head to head
scoreboards better than these? Better is subjective, and there are
numerous factors. And even after those factors are factored in, who was
better is totally subjective. Noor beat immortal Citation 4 out of 5
races. Beau Purple beat immortal Kelso 3 out of 4. Big Spruce beat
immortal Forego 2 out of 3. Interco and Mehmet beat lengendary champ
John Henry 2 out of 3. Cabrini Green beat John Henry 4 of 4. Darby Creek
Road beat legendary John Henry 3 of 3. HOF (Hall of Fame) champ
Damascus beat HOF champ Dr Fager 2 out of 4. Cutlass Reality beat HOY
Ferdinand 3 times. Billy Kelly beat Triple Crown winner Sir Barton 8 of
      12. Formal Gold beat HOF HOY champ Skip Away 4 out of 6. HOF champ
Majestic Prince beat HOF HOY champ Arts and Letters 2 out of 3. Pretense
beat HOF champ Native Diver 5 times. Clem beat HOF HOY champ Round
Table 3 times. Summer Squall beat Champion Unbridled 4 out of 6.
Heritageofgold beat HOF champ Silverbulletday 3 out of 3 times. Jewel
Princess beat HOF champion Serenas Song in 3 of 3 races. Crystal Water
beat HOF champ Ancient Title 4 times. Akureyri beat Champ Pleasant
Colony 3 out of 4. And what? Who is better? That is totally subjective.
There are numerous factors, including but not limited to : superior
career, superior and better body of work, GI wins, Graded Stakes
wins, wins against older horses and open company, running times, avg
running times at various distances and at all distances, head to heads,
records set, still standing records, weights carried and weights
conceded, stakes wins and stakes wins vs. open company/older
horses, varying distances won at during career, superior campaign or
campaigns, durability, constitution, superiority and dominance,
injuries, rider errors, training and trainer errors, win/loss %s, trips,
amount of races run, post positions, campaign and career earnings with
and without bonuses, races with drugs and medications allowed/used,
races with no drugs and medications allowed/used, etc etc and many
many more. But even after those factors are factored in, who was better
      is still totally subjective.
Easy Goer and SS were both greats. Easy Goer won 12 total stakes, 9
      Grade 1 wins at distances of 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f, and 12f showing
versatility on all tracks and many distances. SS won 7 total stakes, 6
Grade 1 wins but only at distances from 9f to
10f. Both versatile indeed, but that is a big difference in versatility.
Easy Goer also defeated older horses Six times at ages three and four
while conceding a good amount of weight in quite a few of them. SS
defeated older horses only two times at ages three and four. Many other
factors would favor Easy Goer over SS as well, including a) amount of
career races able to run - 20 to 14 ; b) amount of total career wins -
14 to 9 ; c) running times at all distances ; d) average running times
at all distances ; e) career earnings without bonuses - about $ 4.8
      million to about $ 3. 8 million ; f) career winning percentage - 70% to
      64% ; g) Grade 1 wins - 9 to 6 ; h) total stakes wins - 12 to 7 ; i)
      wins vs older horses/open/unrestricted at ages three and four - 6 to 2 ;
      j) Grade 1 stakes wins at various distances - EG at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and
12f, SS at only 9f to 10f ; k) Easy Goer never was defeated by more
than 2 and a half lengths in any race in a much longer career, SS never
was defeated by more than 8 lengths in any race in a much shorter career
; and other factors that would favor Easy Goer would be varying
distances won at, records set, near records set, still standing records,
running times, avg running times at all distances, campaigns,
durability, constitution, dominance and superiority in races - average
win margin and average loss margin, weights carried, weight concessions,
etc. They were both greats no
doubt, but IMO other than SSs slim edge in their head to head races,
Easy Goer was better than SS in most - if not all - these other factors
and categories. Both greats, but In my opinion Easy Goer was a better
horse than SS, and had a superior body of work and career than SS. But
of course, once again, better in any way is still totally subjective.

Nope. Totally false. The only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs (and also banned ss's illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill as well) was New York; the drug-dependent and illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant ss was forced to run clean, drug-free without any drugs in only one race his whole career and ss not only got Romped by the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer, but ss barely beat Le Voyageur (a horse who never even won 1 stake race his whole life, and whom EG smashed many times). Prized beat ss in a G2 race. When Prized was forced to run drug-free in the only state at the time which banned all drugs, Prized got destroyed by 25 lengths by the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champ Easy Goer. And the illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill admitted to Jay Hovdey of the DRF that he illegally administered performance enhancing drugs to ss; but he couldn't do so in the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs and banned Alex Harthill!

The True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer's career accomplishments & body of work were far superior to the drug-reliant & illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence. Easy Goer was ranked far ahead of ss in The Greatest Horse of All Objective rankings book by Charles Justice; Timeform's Racing Expert Historian Simon Rowlands also ranked Easy Goer ahead and better than ss, as did many other racing experts; but subjective nor objective rankings both mean nothing anyways. The litmus test of a champion is winning drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs at all, and the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer Obliterated the drug-dependent and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence in the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs (and, as importantly, also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well; Harthill was arrested an endless amount of times for illegally drugging an endless amount of horses). During that era, it was a huge credit to New York [& the rest of the whole world] that the endless amount of their championship G1 races stood as humongous, gigantic obstacles to drug-dependent horses like ss; and these horses, like ss and many others, got exposed badly when they were forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. The drug-dependent and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence got obliterated when he couldn't get all of his performance enhancing drugs from his illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs (and also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well). Talk about a horse that needed to bring his illegal performance enhancing drugs and illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill with him - ss is just that horse, a drug-reliant horse, an illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant horse! The drug-reliant & illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence NEEDED EVERYTHING in his favor to beat the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer by the narrowest of margins in a few races. The drug-dependent and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence also LOST 4 RACES on larger tracks with circumferences bigger than a mile (including ss having a LOSING RECORD while LOSING 3 races at his larger HOME track at the bigger circumferenced Hollywood Park track). Talk about a horse that needed to bring his track with him, ss is just that horse! Meanwhile, the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer won Drug-free G1's at 7f, 1 mile, 1 1/8m, 1 1/4m & 1 1/2m on all 3 sized tracks (8f, 9f & 12f sized tracks) drug-free with much less rest and time between races and ran far more races with faster times at all distances and ran far superior speed figures and far superior performance ratings; while the drug-dependent and illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence only won G1's with performance enhancing drugs and his illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill and only at 9f to 10f only with performance enhancing drugs and only on small 8f sized tracks and with much more rest and time between races and ran far less races even with performance enhancing drugs. Talk about a horse that needed to bring his illegal performance enhancing drugs and illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill with him - ss is just that horse, a drug-reliant horse, an illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant horse! Talk about a horse that needed to bring his one sized small 8f track with him, ss is just that horse.
New York by far ran/runs the most Prestigious, Championship G1 races in the USA with by far the highest purse money in the country; NY was/is by far the best racing circuit in the USA; champions are crowned and championships are won on the Championship Tracks in New York - they are by far the fairest tracks in the USA in New York, with Belmont Park being by far the fairest of them all, because they are all larger tracks with large, sweeping turns where horses run as fast around the bigger turns as they do on straightaways - (although I will note all these larger tracks in and out of NY with circumferences larger than a mile - Saratoga, Arlington, Hollywood, Hialeah, Aqueduct, Laurel, Woodbine, Atlantic City, Keeneland, Ellis, Colonial, Kentucky Downs, and the new Gulfstream); NY was and still is the Center of Racing in the USA; NY was and still is the Pinnacle of Racing in the USA; and most importantly, there are over 200 horses in the Hall of Fame and no matter where they were/are/will be based, 99% of them ran/run/will run in NY for the reasons listed above!

@@jlove8445 TOTALLY FALSE! First of all, Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill admitted he gave ss the incredibly effective performance enhancing drugs Clenbuterol, Sublimaze & Etorphine, plus ss was given the incredibly effective performance enhancing drug Fursomeide (a study of 23,000 races showed it gives a 6 to 9 length performance enhancement at longer, classic distances). Easy Goer crushed ss when forced to run drug-free without any drugs in the only state in the entire country during that era which banned all drugs, & as importantly also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well. Alex Harthill admitted he gave ped drugs to Sunday Silence, Northern Dancer, Proud Clarion, Kauai King, Lucky Debonair, Majestic Prince, Forward Pass, Master Derby, Decidedly, Iron Liege, Tim Tam, Ferdinand, Spend a Buck, Wild Again, Alysheba, Skywalker, Gate Dancer, Sunny's Halo, Gato Del Sol, Deputed Testamony, Winning Colors, Lil E. Tee, Summer Squall & Black Tie Affair. Not to mention Big Brown, Maximum Security, American Pharoah, Justify, Curlin, Tapit, etc., were also given ped drugs like Furosemide, Albuterol, SGF-1000, etc. Whether they became top sires or not is totally irrelevant. Many drug-free horses became top sires like Mr. Prospector, Seattle Slew, Native Dancer, Man o' War, Galileo, Danehill, Sadler's Wells, Danzig, Frankel, Dubawi, Sea the Stars, A.P. Indy, Giant's Causeway, Storm Cat, Bold Ruler, Bull Lea, Nasrullah, Nearco, Ribot, etc. The fact that some horses who were drug-reliant & were given ped drugs became top sires is irrelevant. Northern Dancer became one of the most successful sires ever in the USA & Europe; ditto for all the others above. The big difference is Sunday Silence & Deep Impact both took over from Northern Taste &Tesco Boy as leading sire in the insular, restricted, very big fish in very small pond Japan. While a few Deep Impact's have had success with G1 wins in Europe, etc, it must be noted that he was bred to the best of the best Coolmore Galileo, Sadler's Wells & Giant's Causeway mares to do so in most cases - & in the other cases he was bred to the best of the best Niarchos family mares who are descendants of the great Miesque. Actually, Sunday Silence himself did not even sire one G1 winner in all of Europe & the US, & many attempted to, including Dance Partner, Dance in the Mood, Sundrop, Layman, Keep the Faith, Silent Name, Deep Impact {disqualified from 3rd place finish due to a positive drug test for an illegal drug}, To the Victory, Zenno Rob Roy, Heart's Cry, Sunday Joy, Seven Moons, Negotiator, Wild Sunday & others - All of these sons & daughters of Sunday Silence lost all of their G1 races in Europe & the US. The many attempts that have been made to generate Sunday Silence's sire-line outside Japan have had very little to very modest success, proving his worth outside Japan is still minimal. Sons of Sunday Silence that have stood at stud outside Japan in Europe, Australia & US have had very little to very modest success, including Divine Light, Born King, Keep the Faith, Layman, Tayasu Tsuyoshi, Real Impact, Bubble Gum Fellow, Genuine, Hat Trick, Silent Name, Fuji Kiseki, Fusaichi Zenon, Agnes Gold, Victoire Pisa, Neorealism, Brave Smash, Black Tuxedo, et cetera. "The use & abuse of drugs disgraced & dishonored the year of Sunday Silence, leaving all to ponder if he in truth was who he appeared to be. All should not bestow honors on drug-dependent horses. Even trainer Charlie Whittingham acknowledged his colt's impediments, & didn't run him in the Travers Stakes in view of the fact that he wouldn't have been able to utilize drugs there in New York. Sunday Silence, & many other horses, would never have made it minus drugs. Sunday Silence is a drug-dependent horse. ALL of his races IN 1989, EXCEPT the Belmont Stakes in New York, came with the benefit of various drugs, INCLUDING the diuretic DRUG FUROSEMIDE, which is a performance enhancer in many ways & can flush & mask the presence of many other illegal drugs in drug tests. Sunday Silence required the assistance of drugs to WIN his races, while he sustained a MONUMENTAL LOSS when he wasn't able to use the drugs. Because of Sunday Silence's advantage of drugs, all call into question his accomplishments as a horse. Sunday Silence, like Sunny's Halo, Spend a Buck, Gate Dancer & Wild Again before him, is a classic, illustrative example of why drugs & racing don't merge, especially at the sport's highest level. After his drug-aided wins in the Kentucky Derby & Preakness, Sunday Silence went to New York in search of winning the Belmont Stakes & the Triple Crown. Because New York doesn't allow horses to run on any drugs -it's the only jurisdiction in America that doesn't-the suspicion was whether he could win without being given the drugs. It was a distressingly captivating matter in question, which served to remove the Triple Crown of the excitement & allure it has always had. Sunday Silence got overwhelmed in the Belmont, finishing a widening 8 lengths behind Easy Goer. Sunday Silence required the assistance of drugs to WIN his races, while he sustained a monumental loss when he wasn't able to use the drugs. Even trainer Charlie Whittingham acknowledged his colt's impediments, & didn't run him in the Travers Stakes in view of the fact that he wouldn't have been able to utilize drugs there in New York. No wonder so many in New York condemn the usage of drugs. Sunday Silence, & many other horses, would never have made it minus drugs. The use & abuse of drugs disgraced & dishonored the year of Sunday Silence, leaving all to ponder if he in truth was who he appeared to be. All should not bestow honors on drug-dependent horses." @@jlove8445 TOTALLY FALSE! Totally false lie. The drug-reliant & illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant "took" Clenbuterol, Sublimaze, Etorphine, Banamine & Bute in EVERY race except ONE, the 1 race ss was forced to run drug-free in the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs - & as importantly also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well. Back then in the Daily Racing Form Newspapers Past Performances, the DRF published for every horse in every race OUTSIDE NY who was administered the powerful performance enhancing diuretics (Furosemide Lasix, etc), powerful painkillers (Banamine, etc), & the aspirin-like Bute & they were listed in every daily DRF. ss was listed as being administered the drugs (Furosemide Lasix, Banamine, Bute, etc), while EG was listed as NOT being administered any drugs at all, none at all. EG's owners were Chairmen of the Jockey Club & were the staunchest opponents of drugs & ran their horses without any drugs even when running outside drug-free NY based on integrity, honesty, fair play & practicing what they preached. Plus, the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer ran mostly in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned ALL drugs. The drug-reliant & illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence "took" the powerful performance enhancing diuretic Furosemide Lasix (during that era legal in all US states except only one - NY), Banamine (50 times more powerful than the legal aspirin-like bute, but during that era legal in all US states except only one - NY), the legal aspirin-like Bute (during that era legal in all US states except only one - NY), the illegal powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol, the illegal Etorphine (infinitely more powerful than the legal aspirin-like bute), & the illegal Sublimaze (infinitely more powerful than the aspirin-like bute). See below for the effects of the illegal Clenbuterol. The illegal drugs Etorphine & Sublimaze are drugs that gave/give horses such a sense of euphoria & well-being that they feel like they don’t have legs. Furosemide Lasix, a potent diuretic, was/is the main drug which masks other drugs & flushes other banned drugs. US Vet Assoc.: "The drug Lasix is absolutely performance enhancing & also acts a diuretic making horses lose weight giving them an advantage while making them run faster at the same time. In a study of 23,000 races by American Veterinary Medical Association, Horses that received the drug lasix raced faster, earned more money, & were more likely to win or finish in the top 3 positions than horses that did not. The study showed a 6 LENGTH difference with Lasix than without. Another reason for the performance-enhancing effects of lasix is the acute reduction in body weight that occurs after lasix administration. Administration of lasix shows to induce up to 4% reduction in body weight within 4 hours. Because work is a product of mass, velocity & distance, that loss of this amount of weight has a significantly beneficial effect on the athletic ability of lasix-treated horses. Lasix-induced reduction in body weight increases the maximal rate of oxygen consumption, reduces accumulated oxygen deficit & rate of lactate production, & decreases the rate of carbon dioxide production of horses during intense exercise, delaying the onset of fatigue & increasing the oxygen going to muscles."
Most importantly, Alex Harthill confessed to illegally giving illegal performance enhancing drugs to ss. I quote the DRF for the factual truths: "Sunday Silence's veterinarian Alex Harthill, toward the end of his life, was BOLD ENOUGH to tell me (Jay Hovdey of the Daily Racing Form) how he illegally gave numerous horses, including Clenbuterol to Sunday Silence, illegal drugs. Harthill ADMITTED to illegally breaking the laws in enhancing his horses performances. Harthill ADMITTED to illegally using the immensely effective performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol regularly in the 1980's, 15 years before it was approved by the FDA, on his horses, INCLUDING using it on sunday silence. Harthill introduced the incredibly effective performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol in the 1980's & illegally administered it to Sunday Silence, who benefited immeasurably by its immensely effective performance enhancing effects. The drug Clenbuterol has a similar effect on the body as epinephrine & amphetamines by increasing the production of epinephrine & noradrenaline, & thus significantly enhancing performance. Clenbuterol also thins blood & widens the vessels that carry oxygen, so the volume of oxygen in the blood increases, & thus significantly increases energy, & thus significantly enhances performance; plus clenbuterol dramatically reduces body fat by causing rapid fat burning. The drug Clenbuterol performed miracles for horses who made inexplicable improvements with major enhancements in performance.
Some of Harthill's other favorite magic making performance enhancing drugs that he administered were Etorphine, Banamine & Sublimaze. The drugs Etorphine & Sublimaze are drugs that give horses such a sense of euphoria & well-being that they feel like they don’t have legs. The US DEA filed suit against Alex Harthill on 102 charges of possessing & using unusual quantities of these & other drugs, such as the powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol, powerful steroids, loop diuretics, extremely powerful painkillers, & very strong amphetamines, etc. Alex Harthill & drugs have led to the destruction of integrity in North American racing. Harthill was at the vanguard of giving drugs to horses that were used to vastly enhance their performances, & they were remarkably effective turning good horses into great horses, bad horses into good horses, slower horses into faster horses, horses with no business winning doing so, & causing horses to run far over their heads. Harthill was a vet who had stolen a 30 length lead in the race to discover drugs that would significantly move up racehorses, & Harthill had no hesitancy in using whatever was available. Harthill was a magic man vet practicing the dark arts of racehorse manipulation. Harthill was arrested many times (Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, NY,etc) for tampering, bribery & doping horses with drugs. Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill did more cheating with drugs to win horse races than any vet in history." Besides Harthill admitting it to the DRF, there is the CERTAINTY of MOUNDS of more evidence regarding Harthill's illegalities. Case closed

Easy Goer was great everywhere he ran, and he loved racing everywhere. During that era, New York was alone [in the US] and was the only state
that had the courage to ban all race-day drugs and medications. It was to New York's credit that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other
huge, historic, prestigious G1 races in NY stood as a huge obstacle to a
drug-dependent horse.
The championship races in NY carried, and still carry, a lot of weight; and his connections ran him mostly in these championship, drug free NY races. And New York
was and still is the most prominent racing circuit in North America. New York was the ONLY state in the entire country that banned ALL race-day drugs and medications. Most connections decisions not to run in NY was influenced mostly by New York's no-medication rules more than anything else. The connections of many many top horses, including Summer Squall, Best Pal, Dance Smartly, Hollywood Wildcat, Tight Spot, Paseana, Blushing John, Lost Code, Desert Wine, Snow Chief, Wild Again, Tank's Prospect, Skywalker, King Glorious, Spend a Buck, Great Communicator, Infinidad, Capote, Sunny's Halo, Gate Dancer, The Wicked North, Suave Prospect, Tejano Run, Lil E. Tee, etc., freely admitted that their horses could not compete in top company without the drugs and medications, and never [or very rarely] ran them in the
prominent, illustrious races in drug free New York.
Easy Goer won outside NY when he won the Swale Stakes running the fastest seven furlongs of the year in Florida; he lost by inches in the Preakness in Maryland and by a rapidly diminishing neck in the Classic in Florida running extremely fast to his great rival. Some would say these two close losses were among his most impressive races. And I quote: "Some would say it was much more about the sizes and circumferences of the tracks with SS possibly
having an advantage on smaller, tighter-turned mile tracks; and Easy
Goer possibly having an advantage on bigger, wider turned mile and an
eighth or bigger tracks. But track sizes and circumferences, region, state and
drugs/medications are just a few of the numerous, endless variables and
factors. SS's record win-loss % on mile-and-eighth or larger tracks was
very similar to EG's record win-loss % of on smaller mile tracks. There
is also the facts about the distances and amount of time between their
so called 'prep' races and schedules: Easy Goer ran many more career
races [and ran a much more strenuous post Triple Crown campaign than
SS]. EG also ran a record mile in the Gotham, then only 2 weeks later won the
Wood Memorial, then only 2 weeks later the start of the Triple Crown
races - total of 5 races in 9 weeks.
Belmont Park has the best track with it's fine surface and size. It's wide and wonderful. Big, wide
sweeping turns and long straightaways. Riders and horses seldom bunch
and jam, and a horse can run the turns as fast as the straightaways."

Carlos Steve Levine you make excellent points but at the end of the day he was 1 for 5 outside of New York , the 4 losses were huge races ky derby , Preakness , juvenile, classic

At the end of the day Sunday Silence lost 4 of 6 races on tracks with a circumference of a mile and an eighth or larger. Hall of Famer Kelso lost a whopping 16 races outside of New York. Hall of Famer Forego also lost 4 races outside of New York just like Hall of Famer Easy Goer. Future Hall of Famer Beholder lost all 4 of her races outside California. Their respective records prove what about the quality of horses they all were? Not much at all. What are "huge races" is also subjective. Many would say that the "hugest" races are all of the G1 handicap races open to horses of all ages, and not many of those other "big" races restricted only to two year olds and three year olds. Many would say the huge races run over larger, fairer tracks are bigger, better and more defining. Many also would say that the only "huge championship" races were those run where all drugs and medications were banned. I am one of them. Only the drug-free medication-free races could/can be called "huge championship" events in my opinion. New York's no-medication no-drug rules during that era kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow race-day drugs was a big factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions in that era. And during that era, New York was alone [in the US] and was the only state that had the courage to ban all race-day drugs and medications.
Easy Goer won outside NY when he won the Swale Stakes running the fastest seven furlongs of the year in Florida; he lost by inches in the Preakness in Maryland and by a rapidly diminishing neck in the Classic in Florida running extremely fast to his great rival. Some would say the Swale Stakes win in Florida and these two close losses were among his most impressive races. Others would say, "even Easy Goer's scarce, slim defeats did little to dispel the notion that Easy Goer was one of the best of all-time; the brilliance in his
performances were worthy of only a highly special racehorse. Even his
narrow losses were resounding; there was never any quit in Easy Goer.
Even certifiable legends are allowed some transgressions and losses, and
Easy Goer would summon up enough class and heart even in his
infrequent, tight losses. He always ran well and was right there even in
his close defeats." Plus these are just a "few of the numerous variables, and cannot be simplified when there are many more factors and variables. It is much more complicated than that given the myriad of variables that determine the outcome of races. Failing to factor the numerous other variables in can lead to the wrong conclusions about why horses win or lose races.
