Here's my analysis. The writer said it had to do with English involvement in Ireland and how what people are taught about in England may be harmful to former colonies. My take is that this English vet swings through this Irish area every couple of years using procedures from England. No, I don't think he's banging the cows. The owner of the cow was present for the procedure 5 years earlier. The film is saying that the use of the "English treatment," metaphorically and literally, in an alien culture and in an alien land can result in devastating and unpredictable consequences later on; in this case, the creation of abominations. He realizes the damage he's done, bathes himself in Guinness, and sacrifices himself to the calf as punishment.
I am glad that I read this comment before watching the film. Thank you for the brilliant explanation! It all makes sense when I watch it with this in mind.
Is this an allegory of someone who has committed an awful abusive crime in their past. The calf is how the effects are not just the for abused person but also their future and family and relationships. They perpetrator has tried to forget but the guilt has caught up with them.
Seriously? Are you sure? I thought it was just about a guy who has a fetish! I mean “to each his own” I’ve looked at my fair share of heffas myself lol.
I took it as he committed Bestiality (zoophillia) He was attracted to cows That’s why the farmer told him to stay away from his Farm or Animals and he warned him he was being watched! …he got undressed for that at the end
this is what the creater said in another comment 'as an allegory for the english in Ireland... and how with our education (what I was taught in school in England about Ireland, and thus, in this allegory, the vet's methods), if we don't question it, can be actively harmful to society, and the community'
Umm... What the fuck?? This was good in many ways, and very intriguing, but what the fuck? I hate it when short films are this good, but are too bizarre to understand what's going on. I don't need to know why the weird stuff is happening, but I do need to understand what the weird stuff is. But we didn't get to see the cow, hear it's screams, and no one actaually said what the vet did that made them into whatever they are. The closest thing we got was that line about serial killers and it made no sense at all. The whole thing made no sense at all.
Right. The guy at the bar telling him about his technique and to stay away from his cows was definitely leading somewhere… but turned a sharp left before we got there. lol

I think the vet was fucking the cows. Thats why the calf at first was unrecognisable. Because it was half human. And that's why he said "No!" about calling the vet: because he knew. That's why he was being questioned by the po-po
This was very strange and so hard to understand what the film was really all about. The filmmaker explained it below if you scroll down. You have to know history to really understand this. It is an allegory for the English in Ireland and the Vet's method is like a metaphor. Even with him explaining it, I still have no clue, lol. So, I looked into it. After the English Revolution brought Cromwell and his parliamentary forces to power, he sent armies to crush resistance in Ireland with extreme brutality. In whole area, the Irish population was exterminated or forced to flee, and Scottish or English protestant colonies were established. Cromwell was responsible for the genocide of many Irish people, he confiscated their land and limited trade etc. It had a lot to do with Religion, Catholic vs Protestants. Is the Vet supposed to be then, Cromwell? I know I may be missing a lot more here. Main point is, the Irish has a long history of despite against the English for what they were put through.
He was attracted to Animals and committed acts of bestiality? That deform calves were the product of it Farmers knew him At the end he committed that again He ofcourse felt Ashamed and guilty but couldn’t helped As is a sickness
@@zethraelofteldrassil3149I don't think the idea of the calf being born with deformity is literal. I think the calf being born with deformity is meant to mean how the Irish felt. The Director would have to chime in here or somewhere who is better with history.
Well that was satisfying horrific, and the great work by Steven Mackintosh was an added bonus. I'm glad that we never saw the calf as it was unnecessary...whatever each of us was imagining was suitably horrific. I know I wouldn't have wanted to see what I had in my head. Not sure if this helps! In beginning (5 yrs prior) that vet helped mother cow give birth to the calf now in question. Farmer in bar talks of technique, then moves his hands. Same way the vet did petting the mother cow down it's back in very beginning. Summary of this short talks of vet being complicit in what's happening but I don't think he even fully understands !

BE WARNED: this is one of those never-show-monster monster flicks that try to convince you that the absolutely nothing that they deliver creatively is a Deep Mystery rather than absolutely nothing.
This isn't horror. It's suspense. I found it moderately interesting and quite well-acted, with dialogue too sparse to be decoded into any symbolic meaning and a disappointing failure to deliver on the promise it makes to reveal the monster. Disappointment is, after all, the child of expectation, and this film's classification as "horror" is what created it.
It was a very nicely made movie, good cinematography and acting. Sometimes what the characters were saying was hard to hear though. As far as plot goes, all I got out of it was the vet did something bad/wrong to a cow five years ago and now we have a deformed calf suffering mightily and the locals are ticked off. Nothing else is explained. That’s very disappointing.
The woman said that it was happening to calves all over and the old men seemed to blame it on the vet, whatever "it" was. Then there was that droning which didnt sound like a screaming calf at all. Just weird.

I think they were talking about how the vet was there treating the cows 5 years ago and when he was treating the cows he had intercourse with the mom cow so they called him 5 years later and the mom cow had a baby with the vet and the baby cow is deformed like they said it has no limbs and keeps bleeding and screaming but is not dying, so they called the same vet to come back and they said it was all his fault about how the baby cow was born so he went back and at the end of the film he had intercourse with the cow again like how you see him getting naked and pours beer on himself
