That album is gold start to finish. Can't imagine life without it.
it's the one i'd pick if i had 1 choice
@@credence7777777 it would be in my top 10 for sure! The rest are Bowie, well NMH's ITAOTS. Can't live with out them, don't ever tire of them. Cheers!
Agreed
Best album in my opinion
Best album for me.
I'd give my right bollock to hear this song again for the first time
plus listen to the first single they released after the album tracks...Fools Gold
@@davidlittle7182 when I first heard fools gold, on acid in a nightclub in Nottingham, I spent the rest of the night going to different clubs and asking them to put it on 😂
@@dantastic6262 an itch worth scratching
That little “hmm” @ 7:54 says it all. 🍋
@@dantastic6262rock city??
There's an old cliche that the Devil has all the best tunes. Not true: the Roses have all the best tunes.
This album is perfect. Every single track.
Yeah but the Devil was already in Ian Brown, so the Devil still had all the best tunes vicariously.
@@Guy_de_Loimbard he don’t need to sell his soul
@@stewartross1030 it’s already in him
So good that they still had some fantastic songs that didn't even make the album, Fools Gold, Sally Cinnamon, Elephant Stone etc.
Review the whole album guys! I wouldn't be able to pick another song of it without leaving one out!
Elizabeth my dear
Yeah I agree as the entire album is great.
@@Chris-ImperialAerosolKid Elizabeth my dear is great imo just short
Totally agree. After “resurrection” choosing what I’d recommend as the next track is almost impossible. Probably made of stone if I had a gun to my head but shoot you down, waterfall and she bangs the drums would be pretty stiff
I could leave out Don't Stop, simply because of the backwards Waterfall conceit.
People might have pointed it out already but, when Manchester United walk on the pitch at Old Trafford, they play This Is The One by Stone Roses. I think it's the most goosebumps-feeling thing you can ever imagine
Nothing compared to You’ll Never Walk Alone. Love Stone Roses, hate United!
@@Dude0000Dude, You Will Never Walk Alone was ORIGINALLY a man Utd song eons ago but like typical scousers, they nicked it. Good riddance. 💩 Chant.
The one thing that's often overlooked about this song (pre-instrumental rock out) is that it doesn't follow the traditional verse/bridge/chorus/verse progression. It goes through verse and bridge three times, then it's the chorus back to back, then it's the instrumental.
One of my late brothers favorite tunes!. The entire album is worth a review because it’s such a classic British record.
It is one of the best debut album ever made. Nothing more needs to be said.
Two studio albums- 'The Stone Roses' and 'The Second Coming', with a compilation album- 'Turns To Stone' in between, along with a massive court battle with their record company that derailed everything really, and was the reason for the 5 year gap between studio albums. By the time they released 'The Second Coming', Oasis had arrived
Great reaction guys. You need to listen to this album all the way through! Often cited as the greatest British album of all time, it is just so good.
Also, they may have only had two albums, but don’t sleep on their b-sides and non-album singles. They have a compilation album of these called “Turns Into Stone” which has a similar sound to the debut, and is almost as good imo. So if you listen to the debut, and like it, I’d definitely recommend listening to the compilation afterwards. Especially instead of the second album, which had a completely different sound.
The reason there was a gap between debut and second album, was because they got into a long drawn out dispute with their record label. Ended up in court for a few years. By the time they got out, the time had gone, and they’d changed as people. Guitarist (John Squire) took over, and he made them sound like Led Zeppelin. Second album is great, but nowhere near as good as the debut, or Turns Into Stone
They were never inspired by The Stones, in fact, The Stones asked them to open for them and they turned them down and said "why should we open for they old f'ers, we're better, they should open for us" lol
IMO this album is the best debut album ever and in the UK its engrained in our culture, thats how significant it is, it heralded a new dawn for guitar music after the cheesieness of the 80s, they talked like us and dressed like us and came from working class areas like us (no perms or spandex in sight) . It also helped having the best drummer of that era, the best bassist of that era and best guitarist of that era all in one band.
Thanks for the correction, I fell victim to the rumors I see explained in wikipedia. You were great with Pex Sistols and L.I.P by the way.
Spot on mate!👍
@@csn10Also they are called...Stone Roses ..as it was an hard and soft name. Get it now. A contradiction.
The split-up started when guitarist John Squire left the band. Music lore has it that Slash offered to step in and take his place, Ian Brown vetoed the idea because he didn't want anything to do with a hair-metal guitarist, and later admitted to regretting turning him down.
So glad he did 😮
Load of crap 🤣😂 the beginning of the end was..Reni..leaving. also they all had individual drug problems. They did NOT have a manager. The SLASH thing was a media lie, Az was always going to take over guitar duties at Reading Festival NOT Slash. Get ya facts correct pal 🙄
1989 dance culture and guitar renaissance the North of England became bliss the rest of the world had to catch up or take selfies
One the best albums I've ever heard. I thought that when I bought it in 1989 and I still do!
I was living in NYC when that album came out. My roommate heard the buzz about the album so he bought it and we spent the entire summer getting stoned and listening to it over and over. It was a great summer.
They were a Madchester Scene band. They played raves so their songs were very long. Best rythm section ever. Mani and Remi are phenomenal. Also, John Squire (the guitarist) did the art work for the albumn cover. He did all of the artwork. What you are hearing is the Byrd's styled harmony. It was big during that time, there. The Charlatan's UK, The Farm, The Happy Mondays, and many more all had elements of the Byrd's influence. The reason they only had 2 albumns was due to them signing a bad record contract, so they spent 5 years fighting to get out of it. It was a famous court case, and sadly, after 5 years, it took the wind out of their sails. Listen to the whole albumn, it is transcendental.
Top Work Chaps!
Stone Roses to listenTo (In No Particular Order):
Breaking Into Heaven
Waterfall
Made Of Stone
Love Spreads
Standing Here
Tears
Fools Gold
Begging You
Ahh.. Just listen to anything by them...
❤️🤟🙏🤟❤️
I Wanna Be Adored is a nice song from the same album.
The whole album is incredible
I got given a copy of this album on a cassette by someone who knew them before it came out officially.
My favourite is waterfall.
Massive band in the U.K.
Another great instrumental ending, much better than this one, is Fools Gold (Full version)… it’s the one that truly shows their unique sound!
ua-cam.com/video/BBsazIACpYM/v-deo.html. At nearly 10mins long, the Drummer ‘Reni’ puts in one hell of a shift👍🏻
Love that you guys ask for the audio rather than distracting videos, unless there's a good live performance, and that you're so into the full 9 minute all out jam version. You'd be surprised how many would hunt for the 5 minute radio edit, and miss a good portion of the reason this album is so highly rated. Their other 9 minute song, Fool's Gold, from the same album should be next, but the whole album is great!
I liked Oasis' Definitely Maybe, but once a band has a hit like Wonderwall that gets' overplayed and sounds awfully whiney, I lose interest. Don't look back in anger, which came later, is an awesome tune though.
@@csn10 also a very overplayed oasis song if you ask anyone an oaisas song they'd say wonderwall or dont look back in anger
This is a great album for a long car journey.
This group was part of the MADCHESTER SOUND, I have some rare recordings from them days as my friend was a DJ in manchester
I listen to the last 5 minutes of this tune every day on my last 5 minutes walk into work. Have done for about 8 years now, it gets me in the perfect mood, feel like I can do anything.
Loved the Roses since 89.
This and Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles are the best 2 tunes of the 20th Century.
Elephant Stone is another fantastic Roses tune, often overlooked, but the best drumming tune of theirs.
Fool's Gold is their magnum opus, it's a stunningly complex and beautiful song. Their "sound" is very unique, and the difference between the two albums is huge.
My favourite album of all time. Been lucky enough to have seen them a few times over the years. Glasgow Green 1990 in the big tent was easily the best gig.
The Roses piss all over Oasis and all those other "Brit-Pop" bands.
In terms of quality yes, but in terms of quantity I’d say oasis and blur keep up. Multiple good albums as opposed to one from the roses (second coming doesn’t compare)
Hi guys, first time coming across your channel. I’m sure everyone has said it, but do the whole album. It’s a fu**ing masterpiece. Reni (drums) and Mani (Bass) are overlooked but both best of their generation, British at least. John Squire is a guitar legend, and Ian Brown was a pioneer frontman, great lyricist and despite vocal shortcomings from a technical perspective, it works perfectly for this band.
If you’re not gonna do the whole album in one go, at least start with I Wanna Be Adored, one of the best opening tracks ever, especially given what comes next. Interesting note: the album starts by saying ‘I Wanna Be Adored’, then delivers track after track, and ends with ‘I am the Resurrection’ - that some statement of intent
Another point to make about the singles. Some of them were issued by their label Silvertone without the band’s permission, while they were in a court dispute for years to get on Geffen. So there are a lot of singles, but it wasn’t like that in 89 so I understand (I was 8 then).
The reasons this band are so influential are too many to mention, there are books on it - but it’s about the right band at the right time in the right place. Dance music was developing a scene in Manchester, fuelled by Ecstasy, and bands were playing at raves. So there was this dance rock cross over that became the kind of indie sound later (but in most cases lost the swagger and vibe of this late 80s period). The Stone Roses were the leaders of the ‘Madchester’ scene along with Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Charlatans and others, loads of DJs included. The Stone Roses were all individually brilliant, and these band don’t come along often and inevitably burn bright then fade away fast, and that’s why we love them
Your video came up on a search for "Tightrope" by this band, I strongly recommend you seek it out. You're a bit out on the origins of the name, but it's no drama. I hope you listen to Resurrection (as it's shortened to here) many more times, and when you do, just feel it.... it's a trip.
Always say this, but first time I heard this album in full was also my first lsd experience. Just imagine how it was lol. Small bedroom, 3 lads , me and 1 brother tripping our tits off in some faraway land. other brother straight headed and up early for work.
We were either on the ceiling or laughing our asses off.The album literally took us on a journey. Poor lad didnt get a wink of sleep
Two albums with a big record label dispute between them. They broke up acrimoniously and John squire formed a band called the seahorses. The bassist Mani joined primal scream and Ian brown became a solo artist until recently where he's gone mental and became a Covid denier. They reformed about 10 years ago and it was a huge event. Broken up again now. Definitely worth checking out both albums and the b sides/ ep collection. Two very different sounds between the two albums. The second one is heavier.
Who’s gone mental? I think you may be projecting?
The Stone Roses are and always will be one of the best bands to come out of the UK. It's a shame they cannot get along long enough to really make a mark. I will love then forever. Reni is the best drummer of my lifetime.
Ian Brown's solo work is great - lyrics amazing and musicians - production spot on amazing stuff
Amazing album and this track is an indie club classic, often the last track of the night. Great times.
Its Muck Bang guys- Seminal Band that started the late 80's early 90's Manchester sound that gave way to bands like "Happy Mondays", "Charlatans UK" and "Oasis"> The Hacienda was the venue these bands spun out of.
The instrumental outro to Resurrection was actually honed in the studio by John Leckie, the producer. The band was enjoying themselves and laying down jam after jam, but Leckie felt it was all a little too messy and lacked cohesion. On his advice, they tightened things up and sorted out a structure to the finale....and the rest, as they say, is history.
Leckie made the band in many ways. The Roses were never a great consistent live band, although they had great moments, so the production was a big part of the masterpiece the album is.
The drumming on this is insane..love the end bit funky as !second album is led zeppelin esq some good tunes on it .. they made 2 albums spent years in court trying to get out of a shitty record deal in which time drugs took over their life's. Good band like the smiths ,new order lot of music comes from the North West of the UK
Best ending to a tune ever, gives me goosebumps every time. 🔥
Aha!! The band who “saved” British guitar music at the end of the 80s!! 😍😍🥰
..was Happy Mondays.
@@mana3735 hmmm… wouldn’t describe the Happy Mondays as a guitar band to be honest. I mean, sure, their music includes guitars but pretty much all music includes guitars. It’s a debatable point, but they were certainly not a guitar band in the way the Stone Roses were and as such the success they had didn’t really facilitate the re-emergence of truly guitar driven music in the UK in the way that the Stone Roses did.
@@davidburke2132A guitar, bass and drum band then....that made funky guitar bass and drum music. It was the Mondays that paved the way for the Roses.
@@davidburke2132 ...actually..;listen to the tracks on Pills N Thrills...every track has an amazing guitar riff.
@@mana3735 The Prodigy have guitar, bass and drums too. They’re not a “guitar band”. Maybe the Happy Mondays paved the way for the Stone Roses, maybe not. But the Stone Roses were the ones who most influenced the glut of British guitar bands of the 90s.
Whether we agree on the Happy Mondays being a guitar band or not I think you misunderstand the meaning of “saved British guitar music”. That comment is not founded on there being no British music heavily featuring guitars in the 80s before their debut album came out. I mean, Dire Straits, Tears for Fears, New Order, the Police… the list could be almost endless. It’s very much about the direct influence on what followed in the 90s where British guitar music really had a resurgence.
The Stone Roses were an 80s gothy/indie kind of band at first. It was another Manchester band, Happy Mondays, that changed the whole scene with their dirty, funky dance, guitar sound. And the drug ecstacy!
The Stone Roses&Definitely Maybe are the best debut albums ever!
Btw this is not the last track,Fools Gold is
I think it was the last song on the original release of the album, but Fools Gold was added on subsequent re-issues for lucky Johnny-come-lately purchasers 😊
The riff in this is the baseline from the Beatles "Tax Man" played backwards
I interpret the first part of the song as like the 'message' and then the second part as the 'resurrection', if that makes sense. I think that was maybe what they were aiming at.
Incremental at the end...priceless
They released a bsides album called the complete stone roses. Well worth a listen
This album coincided or perhaps played a part in my epiphany, damascene moment.
The arrogance of I want to be adored - waiting for no one to tell you’re good enough.
Love resurrection - I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do. Just magic.
Second album took too long - buzz was gone for me and them.
Ta for reacting ❤
The second album was epic too! Review the whole thing!!!
Yeah..Love spreads, begging you and ten story love song are standouts for me. Not a fan of all the tunes like their first record but still excellent
@Kevin Kaffy I really loved the long intro followed by Breaking into Heaven. I learned to play it on guitar. I also like Driving South, Daybreak and Tears. Love Spreads is great to play on guitar too.
@@BlackMarketHoney ah yes breaking into heaven is awesome 👏
John was ridiculous in The Second Coming!Sounds like Jimmy Page joining the roses!Crazy!!
The Manchester sound could be thought of as the British Seattle.
For me one of their most iconic and musically masterful songs is song called Tears from their second album. Personally it reminds me of Stairway by Zeppelin although not on the same level musically it's damn close. For other bands of the era you have a plethora of choices. From Skunk Anabsie to Ocean Colour Scene to RadioHead. Super Furry Animals. The Charlatans The Happy Mondays The Cranberries. Not to forget U2 etc. I grew up listening to all these bands so I was lucky enough to buy all these albums and see some of them live. The Verve are another iconic band too. But for a good sound try Hundred Mile High City by Ocean Colour Scene.
Still one of the best tunes i've ever heard, off one of the best albums.
This tune is the "freebird" of Great Britain
More Manchester sound. Madchester, in fact, where bands combined the more 'classic' UK guitar sound with dance influences. Highly revered band. Never got into them 🤷♂️
My fucking god, it's been so long since I heard this, fuck yes!!!!
OASIS influence was the beatles, also MADCHESTER SOUND
You need to check out Suede. Another utterly brilliant band from that era.
Know them. Saw them and Manic Street Preachers live 2 years ago :)
Guys please check out their 2 biggest hits! Fools Gold the funkyest tune youve never heard, unless you've seen Snatch and Love Spreads a tribute to Led Zep a pure zepplin rockout!
Ouch…. Forget what the Gallagher Bros are like off stage their music is stand alone at the top, absolute sounds and a must listen
Also the attitude adds to the music
I'm a bit of a 'closet Oasis fan', with a perverted twist, because I fully started listening to them when they released their probably least popular album 'Standing On The Shoulder of Giants'.
I like the music for what it is. Nothing revolutionary, but a number of good songs.
A masterpiece ❤
Their second album is pretty solid. Very different to their first but still pretty solid. I find it has a little American influence to it in my personal opinion.
Hi Guys. Play the album 2 or 3 times and you'll be well and truly hooked.
Nice reaction. No pausing as some do. My favourite tune of all time (perhaps tied with Gimme Shelter) is Fool’s Gold from this album. I bought it upon release in 1990, which is cool, meaning I’m 50yrs, which is not cool.
❤️🤟🙏🤟❤️
With no Stone Roses, there would be no Oasis
From Manchester it's why oasis started
The whole album
Listen to ‘Tunes Splits the Atom’ with 808 state which samples this.
Hardness of stone... the fragility of a rose.... 2 opposites jeez that where its from
The name comes from a book with the same name. Nothing to do with The Rolling Stones (or Guns n Roses).
i stopped at 1:35 before watching my favourite band to say, i'll do it, but the eating thing is not even slightly ok, i hope it stops soon.
5:15. nah, disgusting, IN the fucking build-up, you fiddle with your teeth and eat. what even? i'm done.
Lololol
A classic record.
20 years ago i hear this
Check out the song Tunes Splits the Atom by MC Tunes & 808 State… you’ll get a hint of de ja vue…
John Squires added the Jam. Has been quoted that if he had his time again he would have toned down the amount of 'jam' at the end of those songs. Personally i think he was just fishing for compliments. Can't seriously believe that the outro of some of their greatest songs was a mistake. PS Squires is highly regarded in the music industry but contrary to your view that they must've moved onto other bands, Squires chucked it all in and opened an art studio to do painting. Pretty sure Reni has stated that he couldn't play for any other band too. His allegiances lie with the band....even tho he is also considered one of the greatest drummers to ever come out of the UK.
WHAT Oasis "antics"?
Also they had issues with their record company.
Add one or two substances and this is amazing twice
You guys need context before you can go in depth. The Stone Roses are both the song and the outro. Start at I Wanna Be Adored and listen all the way to I am the Resurrection and you will be informed in a way you cannot by the mere glimpse you’ve had.
You should check out Oasis - Live Forever =)
You like that try Happy Mondays.
For me stone roses is a one album job and should be listened to in full not all albums are like this I have two more the Eminem show and melody road Neil diamond I know he's old school but still good
It's rumoured that the guitarist John Squire had some kind of drug induced nervous breakdown, and on the second album he layered and layered guitars on top of guitars alone in the studio that lead to disagreements with him and vocalist Ian Brown. They split but Squire resurfaced in 98 with his band "the seahorses" with limited success. Squire then gave up music and concentrated on painting, selling his artwork. During this period Brown used synthesisers to put out solo albums "golden greats" and another i can't remember the name of. They reformed not so long ago but nothing i heard was worth listening to, it was terrible i'm sorry to say.
Fool's Gold Live Heaton Park is a must please please react. Fool's Gold didn't appear on any album but considered their best track by many.
Yeah Fools Gold live at Heaton Park is amaaaaazing!
It did actually feature on the US version of their first album, but not U.K. version.
You lads play some crazy shit though...
'87 bud.
Actually their vocals are more like the Byrds.
They are called...Stone Roses..as its an hard/ soft name, a contradiction. Get it now my little americans?
Who’s American? We’re Canadian
Without the stone Rose's there would be no oasis
The Expanse?
great show !
Rolling Stone got it wrong. It's 5/5
I don't understand the point of this. You admit your ignorance up front, fair enough. But why not do a little preparation and investigate the band, answer the legitimate questions that you ask, e.g. this song is cool is the rest of this album good? Who is this guitar player? Did he go on to do other things? WTF!?!?!
IMO this is one of the weakest tracks on the album, which should say something about what a baller album it was.
You are in a minority of about one there, as IATR is generally regarded as among their top 3 or 4 tracks by critics and listeners alike. Others regard it as the greatest pop-rock track of all time, and I don’t think that’s such a ludicrous assertion.
