edit: I'm not saying I'm skeptical of poe2, the developer, or even the interviewer. I got to play the beta, and it was the best arpg I ever enjoyed, I am stoked for it, and was the first game I pre-ordered for over a decade despite being f2p. But, this interview was really kinda derp imo.

Jonathan definitely has imposter syndrome. You can just tell he's poured his soul into this project. Asking that question about over the last 6 years what has been the single most challenging aspect of development. He seemed to be really emotional about reaching the quality level they have envisioned. That tells me everything I need to know which is they truly care about giving the best possible product and it's freaking free. I hope the launch is smooth so they can take a much needed deep breath and appreciate the fruits of their labor.

It's crazy when you know just how insanely proficient and talented Jonathan is as a programmer too. He spearheaded the PoE1 engine and the networking aspects of the game all the way back when they were in pre-alpha development in 2006/2007. There is some video out there with him showcasing early engine testing. Monumental considering just how far the game has come and what they've been able to achieve on their own in-house platform.

I just wanted to shout out the improvement in your interviewing skills. The difference between your first, second, and third interviews is very apparent. You very clearly put in a lot of prep work for this interview and it shows. You should be really happy with yourself. This hype train is giving you a lot of practice, and I'm willing to bet this means you will have more GGG interviews in the future. Well done sir.
Also, interviews with Jonathan Rogers, and several other GGG employees for that matter, are always a joy to watch. It's just watching a video game nerd interview another video game nerd who also happens to make video games, about video games, and that's exactly what I want to see.

Developers really need to take a page out of GGG's playbook because THIS is how you truly engage with your community in a meaningful and honest way.
How refreshing is it to see a developer sitting hours and hours with content creators of ALL sizes, talking with such a passion, care and being able to delve deep into literally almost every aspect of the game. How refreshing is it to actually have a one-on-one with a developer for about an hour of time, sometimes more, instead of the typical "Campfire Developer Chat" with 10 carefully picked questions and just as carefully pre-approved and scripted answers.
I love this. I love GGG and I love Jonathan, he seems like such a passionate and talented guy that truly, truly cares about delivering the best game for the community of Path of Exile. For these reasons, and many others, I will purchase PoE2 Early Access for GGG truly deserves the support and I'm honored to give it to them. They are literally +S tier developers and we should all be grateful we have these wonderful people grinding for years to give us the best ARPG we could ever wish for.

Amazing interview! Both in terms of content from Jonathan, but also insane to see how much smoother and more professional Tri has become in interviews in such a short time. Kudos!
    As for the actual discussion:
There's one specific thing I wanted to mention about rune words: I do think they could have a place even without being OP because there's other things they provided, that imo is somewhat similar to vendor recipes:
    1. They feel like they're rewarding you for some "insider" game knowledge
    2. They could provide deterministic crafting outcomes during leveling (think of rune words similar to poe1 weapon vendor recipes, but maybe slightly more powerful or archetype specific like a poison weapon recipe)
    3. They allow you to farm "pieces of a whole" without the weakness of div cards, where 99% of cards are useless to you because they're too specific and you have to grind the same content over and over to get a full set.
I do understand that they're probably annoying to balance though.

The fact that when he thinks back on the hardest days of making POE2 and is nearly brought to tears with thinking through the grit and grind, and the hundreds of hours of talking through systems, you can just feel the blood sweat and tears GGG has poured into this game. He knows the looks of the artist told to pause all work and head to end game war room mode, he knows the long hours, the difficult arugments over systems, and you can feel both the fear, worry, and pride in every answer he gives. Even if there are a ton of hiccups or things people don't like the humillity both him and Mark radiate it just astonishing. They basically coming to us saying. "look we poured our hearts into this, we really hope and we think you will like it. but if not we are hear to work with you to make both of our dreams come true."
Whereas so far a lot of other dev teams, are like we did this, it's how it's going to be, trust us you going to like it. Even here you can feel the vibe GGG is like we did our best, made sure the quality was a mark we tried to hit on everything. Wish us the best of luck. See you in game exile.

What’s crazy is how generous they are with information and transparency about EVERY aspect of there game. Ask a Diablo dev and you’ll never get 1/10th of the response GGG GIVES. Just like the content. GGG thrives on giving crazy good content and Diablo hints at content like it’s going to be Sooooo amazing. Just to be something that’s in every other game since 2005..

I doubt it, moat people wont have those items on hand or laying around in their stash either. It will more likely be an unlock feature for the salvage/upgrade benches

New rare mobs system is kinda unreal, how are they still one-upping themselves.

The thing about vendor recipies not being in poe2 is so good. I have played this game for 5+ years, and I never got the hang of the old system, and every time I needed to finish my challenges, I had to look them up each time on the wiki. So thanks for changing this to something more userfriendly.
Also, thanks for the great interview Tri.

My goodness, i really hope they expand on PvP. I am so glad they gave us dueling. Hopefully we get some sort of different ways to PvP down the road, it would be amazing even if it was a nightmare to balance / no balance just like poe1

I'd actually like to float the suggestion that while the runewords were op and that was a driving source of satisfaction the real draw to the system was the incremental gain in wealth provided from finding the runes themselves whilst farming any content in the game. They almost functioned similarily to higher end divination cards giving you a piece of the pie towards a larger end goal.
