I was cringing a bit thinking this was just too tall of an order to pull off... that it couldn't live up to the mysticism of the movie and all it carries with it as part of Americana. Boy was I wrong. FOX and perhaps even more importantly the PLAYERS put together a production that not only exceeded my wildest expectations (particularly as an Iowan who grew up 20 min from the field), but breathes new life into this great great game... if you ever wondered why they call it 'the show' you don't have to wonder anymore. To this day I cannot watch Field of Dreams without crying at the end. Not because of what I said or did with my dad but because of what I didn't do with him. My father passed away in 1974 when I was only 6 years old from Kidney failure, and like the movie his name was John. I didn't have long on this earth with him but my father loved baseball. He was a photographer that worked for the Philadelphia Phillies doing free lance work which he sold to the Philadelphia Bulletin and Inquirer.
My dad, and his dad my grandfather loved baseball. They loved the Phillies. One of the few memories I have with my father was having a catch with him in the front yard of our house. From what I was told by mother and relatives over the years is that my father was a gentle great man that left us too soon. I'm in my 50's now, but my 14 year old son who has never seen Field of Dreams (I wanted to wait until he was old enough to truly grasp the meaning of the movie) will be watching it today with me, and yes I will be crying when Kevin Costner turns to his dad and asked him his name. When he says, John I begin to lose it, when he says, "Dad do you want to have a catch", I'm mush. But hey it is what baseball and this movie does to me.
If I could just have ONE more catch with my father to let him see his grand kids and me as a grown man ...

I have been to the Field of Dreams a few times. It is weird but there is a certain feeling of peace when you are in this space. It is hard to describe but it chokes you up when you watch people visit. They bring their gloves and their baseballs for a catch. They may even take a turn at batting but they don't speak. There is a silence of words. They act as if this place is like a church and they treat it with reverence. All you hear is the sounds of baseball. They spend an hour or so tossing the baseball around, walking the field or disappearing into the corn that edge this field but what you really are seeing them do is trying to catch the spirit and the feelings this Field of Dreams brings.

Let the rest of the season play out normally - Division races, NCLS, ACLS and whatnot. The 2 World Series teams would duke it out on their respective home fields, like usual. Jon Oeschger, I'm very sorry about your father. Your short yet extremely heartfelt message touched me deeply. Reason being, I've written a true story surrounding the NY Yankees and my brother, which has to do with a father and son. Too much to get into now. However, one line in my book reads as such: "Now, I’m convinced that God IS on my side, for this unique pitching matchup had obviously been Heaven sent." As you can see, you and I feel the game as much as most lovers of baseball, if not more. God bless.

Memories for me of baseball wasn't catch with my Dad. He couldn't do it because of his health. But, Giants and A's games we went....Mays, Bonds, Cepeda, Montefusco, Catfish, Blue and Reggie.
Adendum: Others had to show me how to throw & catch and swing a bat and field who weren't family.
This is why I did it with my son when he was a kid. I showed him and played catch and even practiced with him.
This is why this film touches a cord with me and I am sure with many others.

Those of us whose fathers either weren’t around to “have a catch” with their sons or maybe were around but didn’t care really appreciate this movie and this game. I wasn’t able to buy him a car when he was sixteen or do a lot of other things for him like I wanted to but I did spend time in the back yard just “having a catch”, or maybe tossing a football around. Moments I can’t get back that have become memories I’ll always cherish.

Kevin is gold. I was totally charmed by him for the first time in Silverado, and Dances with Wolves is a film masterpiece. But this movie is so magical that I am moved by its beauty and compassion every time. I don’t dislike baseball, but I can’t say I am a real fan either although I like a great game. But when I saw this movie for the first time, my dad (who was a real fan) had just died a few months earlier. I cried like a little child longing for it to be real so I could tell him “I love you” one more time. One day it will be real, I guess, when “heaven” is “Iowa” no longer.

Unfortunately, you cannot use it more than a few times a year unless you want it to also be a field of soybeans. There are only certain times of the year that the corn will be the right height, and most of these farms crop rotate to keep enough nitrogen etc. in the soil. That being said, it was very cool and I would like to see it be an annual thing much like how the NHL does their outdoor games. Very very cool atmosphere.

As someone who grew up without his father, because he chose to not be a part of my and my mother's life. He died when I was 11 years old preventing me the chance to ever meet him, just a couple years after this movie came out. This movie will always be special to me, and one that I watch a few times a year and cry every time I watch the movie the scene that just rips at me is the scene where Ray and his father get to play catch.
With my beloved and favorite team, the Chicago Cubs playing in this game next year, so would like to be able to go to that game. I just wish my uncle was here to make the trip with me but I lost him a few years ago.

Most people don't see the connection at first. The film 🎥 wasn't about baseball as much as it was about a life lesson. We all as sons have said things we regret in hindsight (which is always 20/20) or things we wish we had said to our Dads. If there is one takeaway for my part it's to learn to move forward with the fewest regrets as possible.

Its a great story about the very early years of organized baseball and the "first" professional team, the Cincinnati Reds. No way to explain the story line easily but if you like stories like "Field of Dreams", you would more than likely enjoy this.

The preparation, the design, the delay, the execution...THE GAME. I'd love to see this become a tradition, but in my heart...the only way for this to stay as perfect as it was is...no sequel. This should be the one and only time 'Field of Dreams' ever happens in MLB. Keep the field. Maintain the area...but no more productions. This was everything.
