@@mrbeefhead You can not be serious? japan is not new york. and the beatles don't have a catalogue of such great influence as sonic youth do. i grew up listening to the Beatles but they would not be in my top one hundred. the best music has come out of the US for such a long time. punk and no wave started here. John lennon had a few songs that are considered influential, but for me the beatles were a cash spinner, dull frankly (Written expression revised 19/01/2020)
This song has special meaning to me. I met a girl in HS in 1993 and introduced her to SY. This song was on the first time I kissed her. Over 20 years later and a divorce from the same girl; I cannot listen to this song without thinking about that night in Randolph NJ in 1993. :(
i smile everytime somebody says, "most os the time its just noise!". Thats what is all about the noise, the amps, the feedback, total sonic experimentation.
I had depression in high school 1992 ( like most other kids) and use to put this on to max the shit out of my depression- it would get so dark it would become more of a natural high...it was a strange ride.
This song happens to blend melodic soothing vocals and a punk riff progression in a strange marriage, and it works so well. Throw in the noise and it is unbelievable.
[Lee] When you see the spiral turning through alone And you feel so heavy that you just can't stop it When this sea of madness turns you into stone Picture of your life shoots like a rocket All the time Put 'me' in the equation it's alright I've seen you moving in and out of sight My friends tell me it's all cut through you (?) From nowhere - to nowhere Cut together - cutting through I'm island-bound, a mote inside my eye I can't see you breathing as before I am airless - a vacuum child I can't stand to reason at your door In this time Put 'me' in the equation it's alright I've seen you moving in and out of sight My friends tell me it's all cut through you (?) From nowhere - to nowhere Come together I'm down in the daytime out of sight Comin' in from dreamland I'm on fire I can see it's all been here before Dream a dream that lies right at your door When the seasons circle sideways out of turn And words don't speak just fall across the carpet You're just in time to watch the fires burn It seems a crime but yr. face is bright you love it All the time...
+Jamie Webster I still want to hear the full story behind "Genetic". Like some rumours have him so pissed that it was left off Dirty that he quit the band for a couple weeks. I tend to believe above story as, well, that song is better than 95% of that album ("Wish Fulfillment" being as good).
Everybody is talking about Lee's voice, and I agree, but J's voice is also super cool (I am speaking about J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., he is on backvocals, you can hear him very well in the beginning of the third verse at 2:20) Overall, very good song, love it!
This really was the best song on the album. I can honestly say I hit the rewind button on my cassette player at least six time when I heard it. Man! This brings back memories!
I cant believe they dont credit the videos directors. They had some seriously heavy hitters from the art world making their videos. Anyway, one of the best tracks on one of the best SY albums. Rock on, Lee

Still fucking mint. I bought this back when it first came out, so I've been listening to it for about 30 years now, and I still absolutely love this track.
That´ll always be my song for skateboarding (Someone had Toy Machine´s "Jump Off a Building" & the first 3 mins of that song were in Ed Templeton´s part. Around 1998.). Always had/loved TM-decks & heard that song in my inner ear while skating!
While I lived in Manhattan I worked in the WTC, which wasn't far from SY's recording studios. I had seen Thurston in our store (Borders Books #142) and some other employees had seen Kim. One day I had to cross the street and go into the Federal Post Office on the corner of Church & Vesey (and right next to the infamous Building 7) and found myself in line right behind Lee. I actually got to talk to him about music and what he thought about the Florida scene as I told him a friend and I were sitting wasted in the booth next to him and the band when they toured through Gainesville, FL, back in 1986. He was really genuine and I appreciated the fact he didn't mind talking music and stuff with a rando off the street. Of course, getting to run into local 'celebrities' came to a sudden end but at least I still have some good memories from my time there.
super grooved cool, totally like laying here looking up in the knight at that mass spiraling like a wagonwheel through space,, as feeling myself absorbed into the cut and grooven in the beautiful deep dark beauty needle goes in, as it spins , catching the light, sending it out and around in my mind far out man,,,
I first heard this song on Toy Machine's Jump Off A Building skate video when I was ten or eleven. I think it played over Ed Templeton's scene. It's the reason I got into Sonic Youth years later and is still one of my favorites. Lee has some bangers, I love Wish Fulfillment and Karen Revisited.
In 1990, back before there was Nirvana (for me.) There was this album. Unfortunately, I was by myself experiencing this sonic soundscape of an album. Kind of like it would be for a Skinny Puppy album listening experience for me. This takes me back.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that they made a music video for every single song on this album, not just the singles?
Yes
They took the money they would give them to make one video and split the money up to pay underground video artists/Filmmakers to make the videos.
Foo Fighters did they same with Wasting Light
Hey! I bought the video album!
I tried to like your comment twice.
Lee Ranaldo is my favorite beatle
That's hilarious, I could never place it but there it is.

Bill Rice dang, well at least you kissed to a fucking awesome song!!
very cool feeling!
man i got this one person i was all about and sonic youth was very crucial in our relationship of unrequited love i appreciate your story
Bill Rice 😔😔😔😔
yeh but you did make the magic happen with SY. 20+yrs not a bad run this day and era.
GOO is the record where Renaldo really came into his own as a songwriter. One of the best songs in the group's entire catalog
I am 53 years old, but when I listen to this song I turn the volume to the maximum and I am a teenager again

Mee too!😂
Best song on the album.
+themilkman3333 What's about "Cool Thing", "Mildred Pierce" and "Titanium Expose"????
I think this song is still the best on the album.
+themilkman3333 ...for me its the best Sonic Youth song ever
+Федя Кастров This is still the best album, even if it's not the pop-iest.
+themilkman3333 2nd best, just under Tunic.
Something about Lee's voice is really calming to me.
Same here
same here o/
His voice is like Misfits, Morrissey and The Cure together, and that's sooo good
Indeed!
Agree like a big brother that wants to save you from you,, I love this!!!!???
Why is no one mentioning how insanely awesome the bass is on this track!?
Kim is the real star on here. As many many times.
I was thinking the same thing.
The best part 0:00-7:37
Lol zing!!!
What about 7:38😢
the noise part it what defines sonic youth! crank up that wasted amp, feedback and bug out. its beautiful, if you like it. if you understand it
i smile everytime somebody says, "most os the time its just noise!". Thats what is all about the noise, the amps, the feedback, total sonic experimentation.
A sculpture is just a chunk of rock until the artist chips pieces away and pulls something beautiful from the mess.

an underrated classic
underrated but 300k+ views, man

sarviskuri but ur right it isn’t underrated
this is not underrated, this song is in their most iconical album.
underrated from sy are "Inhuman", "where the red fern grows", etc
Look up the word " underrated " halfwit

I wouldn't say always, but this one is amazing
Sonic Youth's George Harrison.
Happy birthday to the great Lee Ranaldo, former guitarist of Sonic Youth.
Hes not the former guitarist of sy. It sounds like he left the band. He is the guitarist of sy
Sonic youth have left a big wedge in musical history as they were excellent.
Lee Ranaldo's got such a nice, deep, velvety voice...I don't get why Thurston didn't let him sing more often in the past.
ego
Always thought the same
The track composer always sing its own creation in Sonic Youth, just like The Beatles.
thurston has a big ego
Where are you getting that Thurston didn't "let" Lee sing more?
Listening their music for years but every time Im impressed , how insanely insanely good they are
Спасибо.! - JoysticK.
i love Lee's voice.... I LOVE SONIC YOUTH!
:(
My favourite Sonic Youth song. Lyrically intelligent with a cold feel.
Потрясающая атмосфера и звук!!! Мелодично, дерзко и экспериментально
This is a mid-night clip from MTV.. its very obscure, creppy and AWESOME!!
I love when things are creppy
lala vasquez like, nuttela and banana?

Miss you guys
a trip back to the 90s
Feliz cumpleaños al gran Lee Ranaldo, por cierto Mote de lejos uno de los mejores temas del laureado "Goo" (1990).
Melancholy of the 90s Seattle encapsulated in this song- it was a part of the mixtape I gave to my unrequited love interest.
one of my favorite songs
Maybe the best sonic youth song
They should be at least Sonic Middle-Aged people or Sonic Seniors by now.
Goo is my fave jam. For real
😆
lol why are people who call others seniors on these videos who call anyone seniors
Absolutely brilliant .
Favorite SY song by far. I love Lee so much.
don't understand why this is so underrated
I gotta admit that Lee Ranado's voice is so great! Fits perfectly with the song!
This is hands down the best Sonic Youth song.

the whammy bar shenanigans at 1:36 are too good
I like songs from everyone in SY but I feel like Lee’s songs are the most fun. Hey Joni, Eric’s Trip, and Rats are probably my favorites of his
best song, video, band...
Not the easiest music to like, but those guitars are otherworldly.
The end of this song is epic, and way more with the last 2 minutes of this video...
they way Thurston just makes his guitar JUST WHALE on this song is insane to me
