Good call on that RF hub Jake! Most parasitic drains that I've seen on newer cars end up being these wireless communication modules ie Telematics, RTM, OnStar, HandsFree Link etc. 🙂
That was an educated but still hard to make call, Jake! Fantastic diagnostic! I was expecting some corrosion somewhere, but it was a pristine module! Looks do deceive :-)
Its a which came first chicken or egg , bad battery causing shut down network problems or module not shutting down causing battery problems , great video case study showing the confusion / hassle of intermittent faults ,thanks
We had a Chrysler 200 a few months ago that wouldn't shut off. I ended up narrowing it down to the RF hub, in an attempt to just get the vehicle shut off I unplugged it and it shut off. Plugged it back in and everything worked and it hasn't acted up again on the customer. Now when I have weird electrical issues I do a hard reset on the system every time no matter what.
This vehicle had multiple dead batteries and the battery hard been swapped. It was also very intermittent. I had it for a week before the battery was dead.
Good find and call on the RF hub. I understand your dilemma about whether it's the board or us it some input keeping it awake. Had an amplifier that was causing an intermittent draw but wasn't 100% sure if the radio was sending it a shutoff signal or not. In my case a used amplifier was less expensive than spending hours trying to find out how the system worked and testing it..... Sometimes and accurately aimed part fired is the best route.
Last week I had a Ram. It had wipers stuck on no headlights no turn signals bunch of issues. I was testing to figure out wtf was going on. I ended up moving the 4x4 module and reset the codes at the same time and dont know what fixed it. At that point I had about 3 h ours into it and couldnt charge for it because I dont know what I did to fix it. Had to tell em to drive it and if it comes back we will figure it out.
I had a 16ish Durango with wipers doing their own thing, light issues, Christmas tree dash and didn't want to shift from park. Ended up being an issue with a connector inform of the RF wheel/below right headlight that had water sitting inside of it
Jake I see it at 12:21 /12:22 marker of the video on the circuit board. Anyway thanks for the reply. Maybe I seeing things it hot as hell up here in NY. 😊
Nice case study. I guess you have more confidence than me. I would have worried about making that call. I hate when scan tools have false data and sent you down a rabbit hole.
That's the thing though, that data pid is non-existent in witech2. In the factory scan tool you can't find it so it shouldn't even be in the aftermarket tools.
Jake, if time permits can you make a video of how to program and what steps are needed to program dodge/chrsyler using WiTech. Vehicles with so many modules are not getting any easier to repair. Thanks for sharing!
I would but Chrysler is pretty aggravating and time consuming. I also very rarely have new modules to program with witech. L1training.com has videos already made showing how to do all the setup stuff I believe.
I hate intermittent draws, Intermittent anything. Lol so much time is involved, Try and get a customer to understand that 🤦🏽♂️ On another note: I kick myself on the A$$ for not purchasing the Ultra when I purchased my MS919, I didn't see why pay an additional $800 for a bigger tablet & a What I though a stupid split screen, Now when I'm diaging and need to bidirectional control something and watch it's reaction on a scope, Well now I'm having to connect a separate scope or scantool FML🤦🏽♂️🤣 I think of ultra every time. Great video and great advice 👍🏽
Had exactly the same car with exactly the same issue. After 2 days of exactly the same diagnostic procedures the parasitic drain was gone by itself. Couldn't make it happen again, car was sold and never came back.
Been there done that, Instrument cluster and Gear Shifter stays lit up. Challenger / Chargers and the RF hut wouldn't quit talking and would quit acting up if the connectors where removed and reinstalled. Becoming a common failure.
Right away I could think that after you took a step back away from all the live data coming in that the little clues orbiting collided for a “conclusion” maybe lol
A few semi-random thoughts... I believe the telematics control unit or telematics gateway is the gateway between the car and the cellular data network for services such as Onstar or equivalent, over the air software updates, and app based controls on the driver's smartphone. I am wondering whether this was a software issue in the wireless gateway. Did you look for TSBs or check whether the module's calibration was up to date? I didn't go back and look, but I believe at one point, when you saw that the network was still awake, you assumed that the (full) draw was still there. I probably would have checked the amp clamp, just to be sure. (I know, this is a minor point. :-) )
Jake thanks for sharing some awesome troubleshooting . I hope it didn’t come back to bite you . What was that black line cutting across a trace on the circuit board ? Just wondering. I’m going to watch it again just to understand more of your troubleshooting procedure. Thanks again for sharing. Artie 👍
I'm curious how you charge for this kind of diag. I seems like this was a very complicated diagnostic. But as a fellow technician I know sometimes it can be difficult to justify all the time investment.
Witech2 doesn’t have that data pid so it shouldn’t be used. Not sure why the aftermarket has that PID but it’s possible it might use it on other vehicles.
Good call on that RF hub Jake! Most parasitic drains that I've seen on newer cars end up being these wireless communication modules ie Telematics, RTM, OnStar, HandsFree Link etc. 🙂
Intermittents. The curse of the automotive electronics field! I've had some in the past, but not like you have here.
Good one Jake.

Good luck!! That is the hardest thing to repair
Wow! Good find.
That was an awesome case study!

Thanks for the tip. Diagnose before unplugging!
Fantastic diagnostic

Well done 👍
Very nice Information and explenation,I been notice many of the new car and truck after time need to be reboot like our phone before been remplace.
Nice case study. I guess you have more confidence than me. I would have worried about making that call. I hate when scan tools have false data and sent you down a rabbit hole.
Great vid
Dam good job Jake
Cool video Jake
Great video, sir. I have to say, though, I was really hoping you would show what that data pit read with the new RF hub in.
That's the thing though, that data pid is non-existent in witech2. In the factory scan tool you can't find it so it shouldn't even be in the aftermarket tools.
Think about the back market that will form when these manufacturers tell you to kick rocks when you need a module!
Jake, things like this can cause you to pull all your hair out! Hoping this is a good fix. We're rooting for you. Thanks for Sharing!
It’s been a couple months so seems good so far!
Jake, if time permits can you make a video of how to program and what steps are needed to program dodge/chrsyler using WiTech. Vehicles with so many modules are not getting any easier to repair. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah that’s a huge selling feature of the ultra.
Had exactly the same car with exactly the same issue. After 2 days of exactly the same diagnostic procedures the parasitic drain was gone by itself. Couldn't make it happen again, car was sold and never came back.
👍👍😊😊
The thermo camera would have come in handy.
Not really. With network wake-up you will see multiple modules warm because they are awake due to network activity.
Been there done that, Instrument cluster and Gear Shifter stays lit up. Challenger / Chargers and the RF hut wouldn't quit talking and would quit acting up if the connectors where removed and reinstalled. Becoming a common failure.
Yeah and I think I have another one at the shop that is doing the same thing.
Right away I could think that after you took a step back away from all the live data coming in that the little clues orbiting collided for a “conclusion” maybe lol
Gotta love technology, the newer cars and trucks are even worse. SMH
A few semi-random thoughts...

If you think CAN bus is crazy you need to checkout the new Cyber Truck bus with the 48 volt system
My brother in law just picked his up last Friday. Already had it wrapped for another $6000.

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
hi, did the selector false R position when in Park change after fitting the new RF HUB? Great job
It’s not a real data PID according to WiTech2
Die you take a look at the Lever Position with the new Part?
Witech2 doesn’t have that data pid so it shouldn’t be used.
Jake thanks for sharing some awesome troubleshooting . I hope it didn’t come back to bite you . What was that black line cutting across a trace on the circuit board ? Just wondering. I’m going to watch it again just to understand more of your troubleshooting procedure. Thanks again for sharing. Artie 👍
I’m not sure what black line you are referring too
I had the same problem with a customer's car and changed the rf hub And I fixed it , dodge charger
Did it fix the park indicator issue
That data pid shouldn’t be there according to witech2
With the new RF hub did it show the correct data for TRS and ESM?
No that data pid isn’t in witech2 so it’s not used in this vehicle.
10:00 unplugging the RF module wouldn't fix a bad door switch.
That’s true
Did you check the Data after replacing the RF hub
Not with an aftermarket tool. Witech2 doesn't list that pid so it's not accurate in the aftermarket tools.
By any chance when you replaced the RF hub did it read the same on scan data on park switch?
Witech2 doesn’t have that data pid so it shouldn’t be used.
I'm curious how you charge for this kind of diag. I seems like this was a very complicated diagnostic. But as a fellow technician I know sometimes it can be difficult to justify all the time investment.
By the hour!
interesting did it still read in reverse with the new one . logic there i would say pointed to that rf hub for sure my friend
Since witech2 doesn’t have that data pid it means it shouldn’t have been there on the aftermarket tools.
@@autodiagyt oh wow interesting indeed . definitely have to research what your scan tools show’s or that could lead you down a rabbit hole
What did the scanner show on the PRNDL data pid with the new RF hub installed?
Witech2 doesn’t have that data pid so it shouldn’t be used. Not sure why the aftermarket has that PID but it’s possible it might use it on other vehicles.
It was a "Challenge" r of a problem I'm sure it was a "parasite" tic to ur nerves over this... 😂
But doesn't top that lighting stuck Chevy
These new cars are junk !
Dangerous also with things are coming on and staying on by themselves. Ticking time bomb.
