  • In this week's Striper Migration Report, OTW’s Assistant Editor Matt Haeffner is joined by Captain Brandon Weitz of Causeway Bait and Tackle in Wantagh, NY, and Captain Rob Taylor of Newport Sport Fishing Charters in Rhode Island. Matt and Brandon discuss the recent influx of bunker and 40- to 50-pound stripers on Long Island's western South Shore, techniques for finding and building your own bite, and using heavier gear in case of unexpected run-ins with thresher sharks or bluefin tuna. Then, Matt and Rob talk about striper fishing in Narragansett Bay versus the ocean front, the buffet of bait from bunker and butterfish to squid and sand eels, and how to target stripers as they slowly settle into summer patterns throughout the month of June.
As bunker schools continue to pop up along the coast this week, big bass remain widespread from New Jersey to Massachusetts, and 40-inch bass continue to flood southern Maine.

Thanks again Matt and company for another great episode! Being from Canada, I am learning so much about striper migration and their feeding patterns! It's helping me become a much better angler overall when I target them up here in the Canadian Maratimes!

Inshore kayak fishing has been GARBAGE. No consistency. Been doing this for only three years so maybe I don’t know a bad run but the last three years I’ve caught consistent slot fish in freaking April. Still waiting for even a half decent day in the estuaries near Dartmouth. By this time last year I had landed two inshore striper over 30lbs. This year same spots same time same lures but with MORE frequency on being out there, and nothing even close to a migratory fish. Doesn’t matter if I use live bait the dock sp minnow flutter spoons paddle tails sluggos tubes you name it. They’re hitting but all of them are not even 25 inches

This show is depressing. I have been fishing my ass off this season and just caught one schoolie striped bass. I think the guys in the show are lying so that we buy more fishing stuff.

Have you considered that you’re doing something wrong? You can fish stripers as much as you want, but they are not simple creatures. They aren’t in the same place at the same time every day. This assumption is not only ignorant, but it truly shows that other people are who you blame for your own mistakes.

The water is still too cold. Those stripers and bluefish aren’t going to be up here until the water warms up. Don’t go off the migration chart.
