love that old XR. Every time I'd go out and ride my KTM 2 stroke I'd run into someone with an old XR250, and to be honest, while it wasn't the oil and smoke spitting monster my KTM was, there was something magical about the XR250 that made me want one. It's a bike that reminds me of why I fell in love with dirtbikes as a kid.. is it the fastest and best? No way. Is it fast enough and good enough? Absolutely.

Couldn’t agree more. I owned one for many years and it was hands down the best dirt bike of all the bikes I’ve had. It did everything I asked it to, without complaint. And when things got gnarly or I got tired, it worked with me not against me.

I know this is a CRF250X comparison but here are my thoughts on bikes I had.
    I had a CRF450R that I sold for a XR400R Because I explore trails, not race tracks.
CRF450R did not like to go slow while going over logs and tight corners, switchback hills and the suspension beat me up after a couple hours.
XR400R can go over logs, rocks, sticks, tight corners, steep loose dirt hills, rivers, with no problem.
    Basically in my opinion
CRF450R was a better jumper, racer, earth tilling machine, everything you will experience on a race track.
XR400R is better in trails, tight switchbacks with hillclimbs, sticks, roots, logs, everything you will experience on trails.

I just bought a non running 1996 XR 250R for $450 the previous owner told me it burns oil but other than that it ran fine it has sat for four years in A shed in Michigan someone before the previous owner had spray-painted the gas tank black which now looks like a spotted pig The front and rear fender are not stock and are some black super Moto looking garbage that make me want to puke. First thing I’m doing is cleaning the carburetor getting the throttle body to move again and seeing if I can get the bike to start so that I can run it through the gears and pray that all it needs is a top and rebuild. I truly love this timeless beautiful machine and want to restore it back to its original beauty. I have a 2007 Honda Xr 650l and I love the XR line for its simplicity durability and reliability and thank you for your awesome videos that verify what I have found in these bikes.

The XR250R was bad ass for it’s time though. As a kid my first big bike was an XR200R and I rode the hell out of that thing and it made me a great rider but took a lot of work on my part. I also couldn’t hang with most of two stroke buddies who had CR/YZ 125’s and a KDX 200. Then a trip to the local powersports dealer allowed me to view the venerable XR250R. This thing had a 4 valve head vs my little 2 valve head, a free flowing stock header, better stock gearing and the extra displacement. My old 195cc had met its match. Once I made the purchase and fired up the 250 I never looked back, thing had probably twice the power of my 200. It also did every bit of 70 mph or more so I had no problem keeping up with my 125 two stroke pals both in the woods and in the open straight.

I owned the 05 450x and while the bike was reliable and well built, I never could come to terms with the twitchy front end. The front end never felt planted. My XR600 and XR 400 turned just as well as the 450x but felt way more stable at speed. I have since switched to a Yamaha WR that handles excellent, more like the XR's but with way more power. Great Fricken video!

I still like the old XR250R! It's still a great bike, I love riding it, and it goes anywhere I want it to go with no issues at all.
I'm wondering if you can feel some sort of difference with the aluminum frame of the CRF. The steel frame of the XR does flex a bit, which contributes to the ride quality I would think. Can you feel any difference?
As far as power goes, I don't really care. The XR250R has enough for the trail riding I like to do and it will climb just about anything; plenty of torque and a truly great 6 speed tranny!

I wish you would also note the throttle response when you throttle up from idling... I've heard that fuel injected bikes respond slower than carbureted bikes, and that makes sense to me because of the garbage (electronics) that fuel injection uses verses pulling on a cable and the carburetor slide does exactly what you tell it to do precisely when you tell it to move.

I’m getting back into dirt biking after being away from it for too long. I’ve been street riding, doing track days and road race schools for several decades now with very little dirt riding and atv-ing. I just sold my ‘85 XR200R I’ve owned since new that I had partially restored. It was almost too nice and too old to go out and punish again. I left it go for a good amount of money and to a good home. I found a new leftover ’17 250x for sale at a dealership 1100 miles away and I’m patiently awaiting its delivery. I really wanted a new, more modern trail bike. I hope I didn’t make a mistake lol!

I prefer the xr250 over the crf250x because of the maintenence schedule on the crf is too much. I have an xr650l and a crf450x and prefer my 650 because of the bullet proof motor when maintained. When I was a weekend warrior, the 450 needed to get the piston changed twice a year. I don't baby the throttle on these bikes, hitting the rev limiter all the time hauling ass. But I give respect to them on being shure the maintenence is top notch.

One of my best friends growing up had a 1982 XR80, a few years later my uncle had a 1983 XR200R and later in life I bought a 1986 XR600R! I think it's just a better bike because of its reliability! XR has torque lower in the rpm range but the CRF is snappy and has high revs. With an overall lower gear ratio the CRF more than compensates for the rpm deficit though it would require more work for both the driver and the engine to achieve. Overall the CRF is the quicker though more involved bike to ride. CRF is a sprinter while the XR is a long haul cross country machine.

Great video and EX-CE-LENT E-NUN-CIA-TION! JK ! So, yup the XR torque and linear delivery is a beautiful thing. They're so manageable and predictable. The 250x out of the box just is so bad. I've spent years getting it to act like my old XR's for smooth throttle delivery. You're in high speed desert riding. I do technical high speed woods much slower but finesse is much more precise. I hated my 2009 crf250x until I got it dialed in. remove smog system, JD jetting kit, FMF Q4, CCC mods, lower 8mm in triple clamp, maxxis IT desert tires and finally satisfied. Once dialed in with minor mods the crf250x is so much better than the XR IMO and LOVE XRs.

I just got a 2002 xr250r and I'm having problems kick starting it. It seems like I'm getting 1 revolution per kick which will never be enough for a start. How may revolution do you get on one kick ?

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  6 років тому

That sounds about right for an XR250R. One kick doesn't spin it over multiple times like on a small two stroke. Kick starting the XR250R can be slightly enraging at first. You have to slam it down through the power stroke for it to start.

Frickin Jim's Affordable Adventures ok thanks. This bike has set up for about 3 years and I bought it yesterday for 200$ went through and cleaned it all up. Guess I'll try to pull start it tomorrow.

Always funny how everybody puts down the fount end on the xr. But I have never seen one fail and can say I have bashed them ad hard a can be bashed they never fail ever so think what u want the front end is more than up to the job.

I run an XR650R and I can't tell you how many times guys have swapped the front out to a CRF450 front end on these and I don't know why. The factory front end won many Baja 1000s and they truly are designed and built for hard Enduro and serious abuse. Haven't broke anything on mine and it gets run real hard. They claim it makes the front end feel lighter, but I say sit back a touch further, problem solved.

I'd rather have the big bore xr. I'd retrofit better forks on it, possibly different rear shock and rims, but other than that it's BULLETPROOF and unstoppable.

Long live the XRs! Literally you can find them in a barn or field 20 years later and make them run, not sure the CRF s will be that way.

The whole crf line is way over priced. Especially when you see time after time that a 20 year old XR hangs with or beats them in every situation.

The modern amenities are nice though even if they don't translate into seconds shaved. Electric start, ergos for standing, better clutch. I still love my XR250R though.

Lol! That's why I put a bigger cam in my 230, to soften that massive, explosive, violent, earth shattering, unstoppable, uncontrollable, neck-breaking, shoulder-tearing, heart-stopping bottom end hit!
