Brits - non bullpup rifles are too big for CQB, that extra second matters.
Also Brits - it only takes an extra second to cock a bullpup, it doesn't matter.

An extra second coming around a corner - might be a problem

You may want to check out the Forgotten Weapons UA-cam channel. Ian McCollum is also quite knowledgeable about firearms. He has several videos on the L85/SA80 including its updates over time. He usually field strips the firearm in question so you can see the major components. Ian sometimes has Jonathan Ferguson of the British Royal Armouries as a guest and they both nerd out on various firearms of the week.

From what i've seen, the guntuber guys are happy to have anyone react to their content. They are pretty much all demonitized due to YT anti gun policies, and rely on sponsorships and merch for income. Which has done them well, but, really, any exposure is good exposure for them, that's generally how they see it. I'm just saying, don't feel bad going back for more content, just space it out maybe, hop around.

I am by no means an expert. However, I have shot the A2 a lot in the Army Cadets. And yes, on the left side of the rifle, there is a bolt release catch that you push down with the left thumb to release the working parts foward. Additionally, on the right side, the little green catch is the 'hold open device' that you push down when you have pulled the working parts to the rear to consequently hold them back.

  • @Biscuitsbrown

That's probably a first production SA80. One of the ones that were sold / given to our friends.
It doesn't have the revised trigger late 80s i think and it looks like it still has the melty cheek piece and no Mag catch guard. He's running colt mags which were replace with the Radway green ones because the colts caused stoppages and the susat is difftent looks like one from the XL60 .

Garand in Garand Thumb is named after the US M1 Garand rifle from WWII, the same rifle with the iconic "ping" when the En-Block clip ejects from the rifle. It is a semi-automatic rifle with 8 round clips that fired 30-06 (thirty-aught-six).

Thatcher needed some work going on to make the Royal Ordinance sale happen, also they were told to make the SA80 it cheaper, hence metal stampings and cheap plastic, magazines , springs and firing pins. KS1 is like a Rolls Royce M4 type design, think its about $9000 compared to about $1100 for Colt M4. Barrel is hammer forged and ground before the rifling cut , chrome lined for extended life.

Way I understand it, when the L85 was first rolled out, Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield was being shut down, and _everyone_ working there knew it - one can imagine what that did to the morale of the factory workers as well as QC. The mindset was, "we're losing our jobs no matter what, so why should _we_ care if the rifle works".

There are some differences but most of them are pretty minor, with the main differences being a further improved bolt and a different barrel profile on the KS-1.

Fond and bad memories of the A1. I still think the A1 is the be looking SA80.
The new front grip I hate as I know having shorter arms it would be a hindrance to me. Also the C grip that came into fashion after my time, would of drove me made.
Left hand just lay directly in front of the trigger guard, touching it. I doubting your be allowed today.
Stoppages wasn't that often unless you were really snapping at the trigger.
I have a soft spot for the A1, the SUSAT.
I recall having a stoppage as we was advancing forward once. I couldn't clear get the round out the breach, or move the charging handle in any direction. I was lay on my back as rounds was flying, with the rifle between my legs, using my heel to try and rake the charging hand down. It worked!! and I carried on.
All the bad things about the weapon, the bullpup is the best design of a rifle. It's short and all the weight is at the rear, so it's less fatiguing to patrol in the ready position. Also the weapon can be manipulated very easily with one hand, making getting in and out tight spaces very easily.

    - Safety catch to safe
    - left hand over
    - cocking handle to the rear and press hold open catch
    - 6 point check
    - press bolt release catch
    -forward assist

The L129A1 DMR is a Lewis Machine and Tool AR-10 platform. Phenomenal guns, LMT rifles are some of the best on the market. Many gun owners will even buy their bolt carriers for their rifles, including AR-15's simply due to their quality. Brits made a good choice adopting them.

I believe ACOG with the RMR was a stop-gap until we adopted Elcan Specter OS4 with RMR on the A2. That went onto the A3 too but they then also added ARILLS (Assault Rifle In-Line Low Light Sight). A3 also had a different handguard again, very similar to what's on the HK416.

The weapon was very accurate. I used the A1 for 4 years, I can't recall any melting issues, but we'd never be full auto for long enough. It would get capped in carbon, very quickly.
Hate that front handle. And loved the C clamp crap fad wasn't a thing in the 90s.

After you photo, yes you are correct. That's how you release the the charge handle, and you'd only have to reach over to give it a forward assist "love tap", or to close the dust cover.

Garand Thumb is a slang term for loading the American rifle, the M1 Garand, when if you weren't fast enough shoving the stripper clip into the rifle, the bolt carrier would slam shut on your thumb, in some cases fracturing it, giving you a swollen thumb tip, aka the Garand Thumb.

This is the A1, metal charge handle (that was know to trap rounds in the chamber), and wider trigger,( that got I've stuck behind it easily)

The susat wasnt replaced quickly I was on from mid 1985 to 2008 it had a good 23 year run.
The A1 ran from 1985 to 2002. But full roll out was only completed in 2006. So the A1 lasted 21 years in service with the RM.
So every always says they changed it quickly. I know military worl slow, but 20 years is slow in anyone's book.
The A3 was more an evolution change than a strict overhaul revolution of the weapon.

Had the A1 for 10yrs in the RE, (pre-Army, I used to earn overtime manufacturing SUSAT body bits).
Never failed marksman level, even podium'd in the millenium commonwealth forces 2000 comp at Bisley.
But I loathed it. I remember my mate hitting the mag release on his webbing crossing a ring road in Germany, mag fell out, 10 rounds pinged out all over the gaff.

I know we all have our own takes on things that can be heavily influenced from our training and the person knowledge and experience of our training team and sgt. I fell for the usual rhetoric until my Platoon weapons sgt, Beswick told me when I was dripping about being the dm and given a LSW which is an sa80 with the bipod and the long barrel that it was really accurate and I should be engaging guys upto 5 600 meters and more and I realised it was him giving me a chuck up as a shooter. The SA80 A1 is the ginger headed step kid its the one that really got the bad rep for good reason. The A2 is another story its a really decent weapon and it doesn't suffer from regural stoppages, its accurate and its fluid af when you get good at it. The susat "iron sights" aren't really iron sights they're called EBS Emergency Battle Sight. Its for absolute shit hits fan and you need to shoot roughly in the direction of an enemy and can't use the SUSAT. Lots of the inner parts are changed and the springs and parts were sprayed red. Its honestly a fine battle rifle, The A1 wasn't. The SA80 A2 is fine enough to be a good rifle in the right hands but if you weren't familiar with it it would be awkward as hell. There's something still clunky enough about it that it made me good in other areas, when you pickup fine tuned weapons after something like this you feel like you could shoot God's right nad.

Forgotten weapons covered the history and yeh the answer is basically it was designed and built by a factory/company that was being sold by the government where everyone was loosing their jobs so no gave a shit, pretty much they only reason the adoption went through is because the government thought they could sell the company for a higher price if it had a active contract from them (the SA80).

They paid H&K a lot of money to fix the A3. H&K borrowed VERY heavily from the old Armalite AR-18 to develop the G-36. Sterling had a license to make the AR-18 back in the day and they borrowed heavily from the AR-18 to design the bullpup. The AR-18 was sort of a commercial failure (because of its proprietary magazines), but a LOT of countries have copied it since for their rifles. Singapore, Austria (the AUG), the UK, France (the FAMAS), Germany, teh Czech Republic (the Bren and Bren 2), and some companies in the US (Robinson Arms, Bushmaster, Brownells). Now a lot are going to issue Germany's HK416, which is a version of the AR-15 with their own design of gas system. Even the US Marines are issuing a version of M416, phasing out the M-249 and the M-4 so every Marine can provide suppressive fire.
