My anthology notes were impossible to revise from, a nice new notepad and your videos have levelled up my revision, was writing at a 5; just got an 8 in a mock. Legend.
thank you so much! I have this homework for year 11 revision to make 2 highly annotated quotations for each poem and this is a life saver because my notes for some of them were written in year 9 or start of year 10 and are really bad! I guess it shows how I've improved at english but also these videos are invaluable :)
Amazing analysis! I watched all your 5 key quotations vids and made notes on it! I find myself writing pages just from these 5 key quotes! Thank you Mr Salles!
Could you talk about the original layout of the poem? The original layout of the poem consist of artwork which Blake uses a visual accompaniment as he wants us to experience his language in conjunction with the painting to convey Blake's vision. Could I talk about the close lidden weary old man symbolise how London is so wrought with these "marks of weakness marks of woe" The outsized flame conjures up hellish associations which gives the poem an apocalyptical portrayal of the city. However the man reaching into the flame suggests ultimately how humans are the ones that create their own hellish existence both for others and themselves.
Being a radical , romantic poet Blake expressed his concerns about the monarchy and the church , who held power at the time , reflecting his support of the french revolution and mirroring his faith as an English dissenter . Perhaps Blake was lambasting the unjust laws and imposed injunctions , which created warring factions in society between the classes ; the lower classes were disregarded and many became : chimney sweepers , prostitutes and soldiers. Alternatively , he was a passionate believer in liberty and freedom for all , especially women . With becoming quite influential later in his life . Thus, he wanted to change the mindset of the public of the social construct as well as the industrial revolution in which this poem conveys caused great suffering , misery and corruption throughout the capital . This is further heightened by the declarative title ' London' indicating ambiguity , referring to the universal human condition of distress and the inevitability of suffering without equality for all in society.
you could also say that the first and last stanza both link about the suffering of people, which may show that the suffering is an unescapable cycle and you cant escape
I also think that they compound words ‘mind-forged’ and ‘chimney- sweepers’ also visually represent the oppression and imprisonment of the people suffering as the words themselves are locked up, just like the people who are suffering trapped in an inescapable cycle of poverty.
@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish yes I agree, but it is in the next stanza, so therefore shows the continuity and never-ending cycle of poverty, as well as possibly the overflow of urbanisation if that makes sense. Thank you so much btw, love your channel!!

An extra thing I found while examining this poem that a pall isn’t just the black material spread over a coffin but can also be a cloud of smoke which has connotations of the Industrial Revolution which Blake was against
Could the 'I wander' aslo suggest that they could be free if they revolt and take back the streets from the higher class as they did in the french revolution
I think you should focus on more indepth videos which cover the intricacies of each poem and more wider context this video still does have really good things such as the quotes and analysis and FOSSE structure although i am not a particular fan of it myself
Hi, I do a lot of home learning with my daughter as she has gcses this year .... she has English lit mock this coming Monday. Your videos are absolutely brilliant. My daughter's school is part of a multi-academy Trust , which uses internal and fixed term exclusion like its going out of fashion. Especially internal exclusion which they euphemistically call 'reset'. As such, with the pandemic and other things, my daughter and lots of her peers have to fend for themselves educationally, and study on their own without teacher support for vast amounts of time ... what teaching they do get lacks any consistency . Im fortunate in that I have some grounding, but Ive been able to really explain with the help of your videos 'how' to analyse texts and poetry, and how to describe language techniques. We're quietly confident now... Will let u know how she gets on ;)
Hi Nicola, I work with a lot of head teachers and senior leaders, and get a lot of perspectives on managing behaviour. Those who run Alternative Provisions tell me about the need to get alongside the student and the parents and build relationships. However, you sound like a parent who could definitely make this happen in your own circumstances. Those in secondary schools tell me about the impossibility of doing this at scale. One school I work with has got 6 extra GCSE grades for each year 11 student, on average, by having these really high expectations of behaviour. I don’t know the answer. But when I make videos I’m increasingly thinking about home educated students. I’ll be very curious to see how your daughter gets on. Good luck.
Mr Salles I just got my copy of your guide to awesome story writing. So far I have loved the stories and the advice. Thank you . Would definitely recommend it. Also one more thing I was wondering if your guide for Inspector Calls would be on paperback?
Thank you. I need some reviews on Amazon! Penguin will charge me a large copyright fee, so I am waiting to sell enough ebook versions before I spend the extra.
The simplicity the form echoes could mirror the narrators footsteps as he waks around London. The fact that it is so quite that his even his footsteps can be heard inextricably links to how 'each' street is 'charted' with the 'plauges' of silence and opression. :D

you can argue that about the first - it is an original idea - but the second is the only term used to describe boys who swept chimneys

Comparisons include differences, so any marriage in any poem!
