  • One of the primary skills every rider needs is the proper use of the clutch. Whether making u-turns, riding in heavy traffic, or navigating steep hills having proper command of the clutch on your motorcycle is mandatory.
This week we will look at some training exercises to see if you have mastered the clutch, At the end, you can try your hand at the board exam.

Thanks Kevin. Always start with the basics. Keeping it in the friction zone along with slight rear braking and you’ll be amazed at how a heavy bike can be stable at low speeds!

  • @davemiller1007

In my recent motorcycle skills course, I learned that increasing the RPM on my bike gives a nice gyroscopic affect with the flywheel in the engine which greatly assists in combination with using the rear brake and the friction zone for things like U-turns, the keyhole exercise, and maneuvering the motorcycle in ever tightening circles. Using the higher RPM in conjunction with clutch and the rear brake actually helps to keep the bike up right for those slow, tight turns. By dragging the rear brake, I think it allows me to engage that higher RPM without the bike increasing its speed. Not so much specific to the 2 x 4 exercise, but really helpful for all of the other slow speed maneuvering. Thanks as always for a great video.

Excellent demonstration of a valuable skill using the most basic of equipment for learning. My boys thought I had lost my mind when I taught them with the board. They worked with a board at MSF, but only as a "railroad track" or a road obstacle. We worked that very drill because they were stalling from a stop on an incline. We added it to our regular practice time and now no stalls or drops on inclines at stop signs.

You can adjust the clutch lever to put the friction zone where you prefer it. Sometimes it is necessary due to wear, sometimes manufacturers just set it up different than you are use to. Great tips either way, can save your clutch too. Maybe next time you should mention how maintenance issues play a role in these tips as many unseasoned riders may not know when issues their having are related to the used bike their riding. Kind of like mechanical tutorial videos that don't just show the ideal situation of a part install but elaborate on other aspects of the job you could encounter that might trip you up.
I understand if the typical used bike issues are outside your expertise but you could still mention it to plant in riders brains.

Best dam videos on the net!!! I would guess the biggest killer of riders is when we start thinking we really know how to ride. Once that sets in it is only a matter of time before we are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel!!! Either that or desperately trying to blame "the other guy". When it comes to motorcycles.... constant learning is the only way to counter the odds of inevitability!!! : )

Another great video of going back to the basics that we all take for granted. Ironically you use your new Challenger for this video. Of all the MC's I've had over the years, my Pursuit (Challenger) clutch friction zone took longer to master. Very small friction zone right in the middle.

High Jack! Basic explanation would be that you stabilize unbalanced forces on the engine-chain(shaft or belt) - rear weal train. Maybe as an example we could imagine a rope which you pull trying that it’s end moves smoothly. Not very easy as it will stick to the surface, bend, jump etc. But if we put some weight to the end of the rope, it will be much easier to pull it smoothly. This weight is our rear brake.

Brand new rider. Took the state class where I rode an old Honda Rebel 250, which was the first and only bike I had ever ridden. Thought I had a pretty good grasp of the friction zone and passed the test to get my motorcycle endorsement. Bought a 2010 Buell Blast as my first bike. I hated the Rebel 250 and figured if Harley used the Blasts for their training classes, it was probably a simple and easy-to-ride bike. Plus it was cheap. The research I did said they were known for having "grabby" clutches. I swear this bike has no friction zone. I consistently stall it at least 3 times every time I try to take off from a stop, or I end up giving too much throttle and take off like a rocket. Needless to say I HAVE NOT taken it onto a road with traffic yet. I have just been parking lot practicing hoping I will eventually get the hang of it. Any suggestions?

I have a Honda vac 1300. I have watched hours and hours of video on slow speed turns. I am having the hardest time with left hand turns. What I am wondering is, my handle bars are not raised up just topical bars( hope you under stand what I mean). When I turn right my clutch hand is way out and easy to control. When I turn left my clutch hand is in my side and contorted so that it is hard to control. So is it me or maybe my bars are not positioned right or not the right bars. Once I fell the bike start to dip to much it had to control the clutch and get the bars straight.
