- Apple Trees Grown From Seed Update - 63 Months - Trees Fruiting!
I started these Gala Apple Trees grown from seeds (out of store bought Gala Apples) on 1/1/2016 so they turned 63 months old on April 1st, 2021!
In this video, I'll be showing you my two 63 Month old fruiting apple trees which I started from Gala Apple Seeds from store bought fruit. They both are flowering NOW!
On top of that, I'll catch you up on the three smaller trees I started on 5/17/16 - which are now 59 Months old as well!
As an FYI, we do have a few issues to discuss in this video...
1) One of my flowering apple trees seems to get some sort of fire blight from the pollinating insects every year - it loses almost half of it's flowers and parts of those branches.
2) A few of my 2nd series apple trees have bare spots on the branches through most of spring, and finally open those leaf buds as summer approaches.
Does anyone have any insight as to what either of these problems are? Is it my soil or is there anything you recommend I do to circumvent those issues?
As you know, it's rare to get a tree grown from seed to flower before 4 years, let alone set fruit! But we did manage to achieve that on my first one at only 27 months old! Well, the other tree has set flowers this year - now the question is whether or not they will become edible fruits or crab apples...
FYI - The tallest one is about 15 feet tall now with several branches!
I plan on keeping you all updated on their progress until they perish or produce!

Rob! Hey brother! Thin those fruits. Each apple tree is a balancing act of production and it bases its production off the previous years. You can thin 4 to 1 for medium sized production or even 6 to 1 for larger production but I wouldn’t go too large or leave them to a crab apple size. If you thin and production doesn’t increase in size or flavor one to two year over the proper pruning, watering, fertilization and water/soil PH balancing then the tree will be crab based upon seed growth from hybrid fruit. However, if you see the changes you want to see in the current fruit (still may take a couple of years to set correct production), you’ll see that many of the issues you’re experiencing are not disease issues, but production issues. This also explains your “thin plant” seeing decent fruits where your larger plant seeing much less. Your weather in your location can play a big role in your bloom and bloom timing based upon dormancy (winter hours received I believe it’s 800-1200 hours vs 300 hours above 40 degrees will produce bloom within 2 weeks of meeting these requirements based upon the prior years production/new growth). It’s kind-of like the tomato with clusters. If you see a cluster of 12 tomatoes and like small cherry’s, leave them, want a medium sized tomato, pinch off all but two on the same branching area, want big tomatoes pinch to 1 or 2 etc. Also, think of the tree as a production factory that is very efficient. If you prune early and not over winter while dormant, it will drop fruit or flower to concentrate on growth. So, beware as you said you were goin to trim or prune. It’s part focus now is production, I wouldn’t prune now unless necessary for size control. I can send you some very exciting links for Apple specific growing. Also, each plant and tree is different, so advice in this segment is only for the apple trees which you’re growing. Start first with soil and water samples, as always, to see what nutrients are present and what PH the levels are for proper uptake of these nutrients. Slight deficiencies here can make your overall issues positive to negative. Then process analysis your way to issue free fruit trees! Always love the series, I hope the Carolina Reapers are doing well (I have tons of experience growing these if needed) and can’t wait for another episode! Cheers!

Makes you wonder how many seedling the professionals go through until they find one good enough to graft and sell as a new apple variety. Awesome videos by the way. I grew an apple from seed but got impatient and grafted a gala onto it .

I've decided to do the same with a few varieties of store bought apples as well. I probably won't get any great eating apples but I probably get some great hard cider apples. A lot of the best hard cider apple varieties are a few steps up from crabapples that you find growing in an abandoned field or hedgerow out in the country. And who knows - maybe I'll come up with that unique blend that all cider makers dream of. We'll see in ten years
Hopefully you will get some good fruit this year. I know you grow several different kinds of fruit. Maybe you could do a video of you just scanning the yard and pointing out the different fruit trees. Just so we can know what all you are growing. Thanks Rob. ❤️❤️❤️

First off in stone do u fertilize - second prune all dead n old flowers cause disease n third trim all fruiting clusters so that there is one cluster 6 inches apart n also trim clusters to only 3 fruits n you will get larger fruits and by not trimming top header it is spending all it's energy growing tall instead of fruit
Wouldn't thinning the set fruit out help produce bigger fruit?
Let the flowers bloom, set fruit, and then pick off 2 fruit sets for each fruit set that you keep

If you remove some of or a lot of the fruit "sprouts" will the tree focus on the remaining fruit and make them bigger?

Hi I'm glad you put this video up today I was making a Apple crumble lol when I cored them the seeds were sprouting inside the Apple I have never seen this before, why is that , I had the Apple's in the fridge is that why ? I think your Apple tree might have a disease it also my be the weather I had a pear and Apple tree and they both had that the fruit was not edible, as the bark got sunken bits on it , also mine had white stuff on the bark, I cut them down in the end , try planting them some where else I find it works, I also had them close together so that might be why , wait and see what the fruit comes out like I would like to know, I do believe the weather as a part in it , to much rain , frost ect

Bend some branches down level or more and they will make flower buds for next year. The big tree looks like it will be regular size apples to me.
Hi, Rob I've been growing Apple from seed too,but planted in a container,it has been probably more than 4yrs now,the tree look healthy and is around 5 feet tall, but hasn't flower or bear any fruit yet..I've recently repotted it and cut off several root hair...When can I expect some fruits..Btw I am from Northeast India,we had moderate and pleasant climate throughout the year..Do I need to wait a little bit longer or what could be wrong here..Any suggestion..??

I am growing apple trees from seed they are 1 year old already! And I need to prune it for the first time, any advice?? It’s autumn in Australia and it’s there first time of experiencing autumn 💎💎
It is advisable to prune in winter when the plant is dormant, or in summer when there is active and vigorous growth. There are different methods for different results such as central leader, canopy, and so on. For starters, you may prune branches that are crossing or that are too close together. Also, vertical branches may be pruned since fruit tends to do better on the more horizontal branches. Lastly, you may prune branches that are growing inwards towards the centre of the tree.

Apple trees usually need another variety to pollinate. Therefore a lot of store bought apples are hybrids, their fruits are not consistent

I could be wrong, but I think I've read that apples grown from the seed of store-bought fruit don't grow true to type. That would account for your trees behaving like crabapples.

Perhaps the cultivar of the fruit tree is not growing in the right zone and the (fire blight or what ever it is) that is why it it having a problem.
IF U TRIM THE TREE, U SHOULD AIR LAYER OR TRY TO ROOT THEM WITH ROOTING HORMONE SO U CAN HAVE MULTIPLE TREES OF THE SAME KIND .

I apologize in advance for the length of this intro 😬✌🏻 on a side note I have some volunteer peach trees that had so many fruit on that a storm broke off most branches this year no fruit at all not sure what happened but we had that crazy cold weather last month I think that’s what happened
