It is a pleasure to watch your amazing skills with wood. I stumbled across your videos of your beautiful roundhouse and watched them all in one sitting. You are a true artist with handtools and a chainsaw!
There are many good and interesting things about a Kris video, but one of the things that I really like is that Kris will use traditional methods where they work well, but he is not afraid to use modern methods of construction where they have an advantage. Hence we get to see fantastic traditional oak framing, then next time, CNC plasma cutting. Keep up the excellent work Kris.😀🇬🇧
Impressive! Finished dough bowl has a strong connection to the original slab of wood. It feels earthy and strong. It was interesting to see all the hand tools used for chipping, scraping, and shaving the wood. Also your large wood slab which holds piece in place. I would love to see a video on your tools, what they are for, and the manual wood stand/ grip/ seat you use. Thanks!
Since Kris hasn't answered, I'll run through it. You can google the individual things. First he planes it with his No 4 hand plane. Then he sits on his bowl horse, which is mainly for carving bowls and is a specialized version of a shaving horse, and uses his draw knife (the one with a handle at both ends). The layout with a string is a traditional way of laying out ellipses. He then proceeds to hollowing out the bowl with his hand adze while the wood is held by his two holdfasts. He uses a hatchet on his chopping block to take off as much waste as possible. Then he uses a big gouge to hollow out the bowl some more. He then refines the shape with his draw knife on the bowl horse. After drying he's sanding it, and, as he explains, he's sanding because the wood was tearing. Otherwise using scrapers or similar leaves a better surface than sanding. He then finishes it with boiled linseed oil using his bare hands, which you should never do because it contains drying agents that are toxic until it has cured. When it has cured, it's food safe. Natural boiled linseed oil doesn't have drying agents, but I doubt that was natural. And I have done it many times myself, so I'm not any better myself 😅 The bowl is a lovely version of a traditional design.
Very nice bowl. I recommend you invest in a hoof rasp, about $35 here. You will find a lot of uses for it in woodworking. It hogs great, and can smooth like a power sander also. I make kitchen utensils and functional wood art, and it is one of my main hand tools. Easy to use, and a real time saver.
Wowww, what a fantastic work! I like the shape of the bowl very much. recently i made cup carving video where i improvised a adze with a victorinox pocket knife. Greets from Switzerland Felix
ASMR~table screeches. Attacks wood with loud hand choppy tool and hand axe. Wind giving mic raspberries. Nailed it. 5/7 perfect score. Would recommend.
love the video, I just started bowl carving . Ive learned alot watching You . if only I could find a GB or HK adze, they seem imposable to find in the U.S. right now . anyway Thanks for sharing Your skills .
wow, this is so beautiful. I so appreciate the labor of love & skill that went into creating this bowl. Do you ever make them for sale? I would buy one : )
Just getting started with hand carving bowls and I'd like to know what the name of the type of table is that you use to pin the log down on to skin the bark. Did you make it yourself or can they be purchased? Thanks for the video...very cool bowl
Came for the asmr... not exactly asmr.... but wood carving is a great craft! Love watching videos of talented wood carvers... this bowl turned out nice!
Very Nice Work! I love woodworking and am always looking for a new different project. You just showed it to me. I am going to the store to get a hatchet this weekend to try it. I noticed that you dried in plastic bags, I have seen others dry in paper bags, but they are hard to find these days. 1. How long did you leave in bags to dry? 2. how often do they crack with this method? Thanks and again awesome work!
It is a very nice work!May I kindly ask about your shaving horse on this video? Any chance you can maybe share how to make it , some plans? I have ordinary one but like yours better. Greetings from Poland
Kris, I'm a big fan of your work and I aspire to be as good as you someday. I have the tools to make some bowls and spoons, but I need to get ahold of some wood. I don't own a chain saw, but during the warmer months of the year, people post free wood all the time especially if it's from storm damage. I have an old pick up that I plan to put a cheap Harbor Freight crane in the back by the tailgate. This way when I want to get some of that free wood, I can get it myself. It's a hand crank crane but I plan to modify it by adding a battery-run winch. This will make it totally independent for me. I hate relying on others and it's always at their leisure. I've heard you need to carve from greenwood. Is that true? I can't image carvers getting green wood ever time they want to carve a bowl or spoon. You're talented Kris, and if you choose a different path of work in life, you can always earn money making these on the side. Any tips you may have would be welcomed.
I would like to do stuff like this. My question is where would I find an adze that size, gouges and seasoned wood good enough for doing this stuff with?
Kris, you earned a sub just for that string trick for drawing the shape. I was amazed lol. Thanks mate
How precious and personal every tool and possession must have been in the past!
Imagine doing this with stone tools.

Geometry props for marking out an ellipse the old-school way. :)

"ASMR"
Kris,

An absolute pleasure, outstanding work. What kind of oil did you use?
J. Kries
I think after you have made a little more mulch, you'll ditch the pencil for the inspirational freedom of the eye driven edge tool!
