Thanks for posting this video. I am considering starting my 16 month old Black Russian Terrier in the program and your video will help me make an informed decision.
The video really helps show how a dog can act and still pass. I'm always worry about my dog fidgeting when it comes to the appearance and grooming, but that dog was fidgeting the whole time but just a little bit but I thought that wouldn't be good enough. That helps me calm down for taking the test. :)
I love the dog's response to the skateboard ridden all wrong in a space too small for it. Australian shepherds are almost as good at conveying wild surmise as GSDs are.
Thanks for your comments - in preparing for the supervised separation, we suggest doing many repetitions of out-of-site stays, as well as tie-outs to poles, etc. and being able to walk away (in a safe environment of course). You can use a cue such as "stay - I'll be right back", so they learn that cue means you are returning. Slowly build up the duration and practice with friends. Best of luck and thanks for training your dog!
Thanks for the video. After reading about what the test entails it's great to see it done. I can see that the only hurdle for our big girl is being in a crowd. She loves people and wants to greet each one. Train, train, train!
Good to know my boy would pass all these accept perhaps that leash walking (he keeps leash tight) and the recall portion (depending on food availability, distraction level and his mood lol) never knew this test existed; interesting! :)
My dog would fail :( I know what we have to work on, but I have no idea how to curb his anxiety. He is fine being left at home alone, but anywhere else it's a constant whine.
Aspen Duley Mini Aussies are slightly smaller than a standard. Minis usually only reach 12" in height while a standard can reach 18-23". Minis usually don't go over 30lbs, standards can get up to 55lbs, depending on sex. Obviously there will be oddballs from time to time because it's a breed that was bred from smaller standards. Overall, Mini Aussie are just smaller version of the standard. Also, the blue merle is just coat color, not a subcategory for the breed.
I want to do this with my dog but for the test it states they must be healthy. My dog battles skin issues and is slowly going blind. Would this hinder him from being able to be tested?
This video was very helpful. I have a GSD who I'm trying to socialize. This will help a lot. I liked the music. How did the guys know or think it was porno?
wow, it looks hard to train a dog to pass this. My dog is very nice and friendly but there's no way he would pass the separation test. He'd chew through the leash to follow me....
This is all novice obedience stuff and is not really that hard at all with a little effort. Most dogs should be able to learn this much. You can teach separation by starting from going out of sight for just a second and then building on that.
Thanks for the video. There are a couple of test results I would question. Now I know why some dogs that go through a CGC are not ready for the classes I teach. The evaluator should have known better than to try to brush the dog on the top of the head. The dog was blatantly uncomfortable with the person in the red jacket and skate board. I also saw that the handler was giving treats to the dog, which is not allowed during testing. I understand that this was what it is supposed to look like and perhaps some evaluators are not professional trainers also.
I concur with other comments, this is great info for getting our pups ready for their class. They're still a bit young and there aren't any open classes right now. But we can start the work early. But I agree, the music sounds like a porno! I had to mute it.
Wonder why the judge has to lean forward and approach the dog like this form straight ahead and leaning high towards the dog? That is quite an attack in many dogs eyes.
My dog was abandoned by his previous owner. He freaks out when he can't see me for a second. The rest of this looks easy, peasy, but they expect me to leave my dog for three minutes with a stranger? Fuck no. He trusts me. Not a stranger. He knows me. Anyone would be weary of being left with some random person while their owner walks off. Who knows when or if they'll come back?
I will be having a CGC test on June 27th, 2015 in Alexandria Bay, New York in the Thousand Islands. For information go to Face Book at "Upstate NY Dog Activities" page for more information.
This is a competitive obedience trained dog. I see a couple of mistakes that deviate from the correct testing procedures outlined by AKC. Although minor, the dog would have still passed.
OMG the music was just awful! I had to mute it because it was so distracting. Informative video though. I see I have LOTS of WORK to do with my dog yet... at least I got an idea of what I need to work on now.
Very nice turn out and test!!!
I've completed the CGC with 3 of my labs, but how nice to see it step by step on video. Great job!

It is good to have a video and better understanding. I can see that the testing I have been performing were good.
I love the lady on the skate board.. Good idea

Thanks for sharing, we're going on Tuesday for ours. I hope we do as well as your pup did!
Thanks! My dog Otis will take his AKC Canine Good Citizen Test next week and this video is very helpful to know what to expect under test conditions.
So how did this dog get CGC with it running away from second handler and jumping on its primary handler?
Border Collies are the Frickin Geeks of the "Dog World" lol awesome job! I'm going to have to work hard with my APBT pup to do this in the future.
Its not a border collie, that's an australian shepherd.
Thanks for this wonderful and informative video.
I thought treats weren't allowed?

Yay Skya! :) So adorable!
thank you! trying to train my basset hound to be a therapy dog. Hopefully hell be as good as your dog is at this

Visual is great, but need to hear you giving one command is essential to pass the CGC test. Perhaps the music could be lower! Thanks.
I did like the video, also bad on the music but did the dog stay the actual 3 minutes?
Good to know my boy would pass all these accept perhaps that leash walking (he keeps leash tight) and the recall portion (depending on food availability, distraction level and his mood lol) never knew this test existed; interesting! :)
you are allowed to tell your dog not to cross over to say hello!
Congratulations!!! How would someone train their dog to do that??
Ok good!! :D And hey I LOVE your icon!! SO true!!
What if your dog is deaf? How does that affect the coming when called test?
We have work to do with our GSD, fingers crossed.
My dog would fail :( I know what we have to work on, but I have no idea how to curb his anxiety. He is fine being left at home alone, but anywhere else it's a constant whine.
My deaf dogs are CGCs. We use hand signals (which all my hearing dogs know as well.) Being deaf doesn't make a dog less able to learn. :)
What makes this dog a "Mini Aussie"? Looks like a regular Blue Merle Aussie to me.

My dog always pants, when out places...
ohhh man i hope i pass this test!

Hand signs would probably be used then.
I'm not an expert, but that's just my guess.
I couldn't hear anything…video supposed to be no volume?

bouncyballblue also socializing the pup a lot when you first get hom
Thank you!!!

I think she was just trying to get out of the way of the skateboard... *shrug*

OMG my attypoo would not stay beside me on the walk. He wants to go his own way.
Check out Behaviour Adjustment Training (B.A.T.) and Control Unleashed.
Would love to see this without the music :}
wow. porn music. priceless!
My pups are 16 weeks and can pass mostly all with minor mistakes! Very hopeful we can pass when they reach 5-6 months!!! #gsdbroduo
This test should be taken on the sidewalk or park with real life distractions.
Thanks for sharing. Beautiful dog. This song loop is too distracting from your video.

I wasn't meaning to have an attitude! :/ Sorry!! :c the shrug just meant that I wasn't sure :)
4:58 lolololololololololololololololololololol
this is a great video, but the soundtrack sounds like a porno

I would love to be able to train my dog this well. I have to agree with stenodactylus and say the music sounds like porn!
OMG the music was just awful! I had to mute it because it was so distracting. Informative video though. I see I have LOTS of WORK to do with my dog yet... at least I got an idea of what I need to work on now.
Video is ok, but the "background" music is horrid.
Would you like to receive your American Kennel Club, Canine Good Citizen Title? I can help you achieve your goals. AKC - CGC Certified Evaluator.
what's with the sex music?
I would think this is a fail. The women keeps checking in with her dog by looking at him. It should be the other way around.
