Shirley Horn; you are a gift to the entire world. I am so pleased that I had the opportunity to see you live in New York City. And your piano artistry is supreme! And those vocals. Just plain musical excellence!!! You are a pure, 'gem'!
SHIRLEYELIZABEH BARNESToday is Shirley Horn's birthday. Heavenly Birthday Remembrances to you, SHIRLEY HORN. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful gift, your talent, brilliance with us.
I could never forget the night that I saw Shirley Horn at the Village Vanguard in NYC in the 90s. I was absolutely blown away. Her version of Estate is my favorite. Thanks for the memories.
Shirley is absolutely SENSATIONAL ! What more can one say when a person can play the piano and sing with so much soul and emotion to such a high degree of excellence? God Bless you soul Shirley. You are missed by many people, but we are still listening.
I was born in 1953,and never heard the name Shirley Horn until the day that this remarkable artist passed away. There is something terribly wrong with that picture! Anyways, thank God for the body of work that she left for us to enjoy ! RIH dear Shirley!
This is so wonderful! Got the chance to see her perform when she was in the Bay Area. Was a most magical evening. Did not know how much I would enjoy Shirley's show! Talent and class, rolled up into one neat package. Quite a legacy she left behind...
Shirley is by far one of the finest jazz musicians ever. She not only set the bar high she redefined it!! I hear her influence in many jazz musicians including Diana Krall which I believe is a testament to Shirley's brilliance. When ever a musician of her caliber dies we all loose but thankfully her music shall continue influencing aspiring musicians for years to come. Thank-you Shirley Horn for gracing us with your musical brilliance!! Namaste... 💜💕💕
You are so much on point!!! Barbra Streisand said on NPR that Shirley had the most profound influence in her entire career! I had the opportunity to see, hear and enjoy Shirley's last appearance at the Atlanta Jazz Festival in 2004. I was so touched by her rendition of "Yesterday". She had complete control over the stage and the audience. I'll never forget that moment.
Good thing about accompanying yourself is you can stay out of the way of your own singing, and she does that so well. Other pianists take note! Piano takes up a lot of sonic space.
Had the good fortune to see her perform before she passed away. Had no idea what I was in store for...she was truly amazing! such goooood music! There is one song she sang that evening, and for the life of me, I cannot recall the title. It was a love song, and it brought me to tears. God given talent that she shared with others. A night I won't soon forget.
First heard of Shirley Horn in 1993 when I read her album Here's to Life was voted best jazz album for 92. Bought it, hooked, and been collecting her lps.
The 5th track is "Soothe Me" -- which was written & recorded in 2003 by female American singer-songwriter Brisa [La Day] Roche, born in Arcata, California, USA, lives in France and sings in both English and in French.
tunefultony johnson Shirley feels an affinity with Edith Piaf. Her "If You Love Me" (Hymne a l'amour) may be the high point of a sublime album ("Here's to Life").
The day she died the Public Radio station in The District of Columbia played a tribute to her - I went out the next day and bought every CD of her's in the store !!
This is masterpiece theater right here. I've never heard a trio sound like a full jazz band.! Shirley had it all.Her Here's To Life CD is in a class by itself and set the bar ridiculously high for all who followed....yes that means you Diana Krall!!
Shirley was one of a kind, she's playing a great set, but I can't help feeling her art belongs to more intimate surroundings and kind of wasted outdoors. Thank you for sharing this!
Couldn't agree more. Like those very cold, dark and smoky jazz bars of Manila in the late 50"s early 60's where we listened to our magnificent jazz musicians. . Great days!
Was lucky enough to see SH in Harvard Square in the early 90s and just so happened that I was seated at the entrance of the stage and I was lucky enough to help her up the 4 stairs at her request and she said thank you young man and I said my pleasure ma'am.... great memory 😊
A very gifted lady who God blessed with musical talent and a intertainerof great caliber ! A crowd pleaser Shirley is a artist of Jazz style. May YESHUA keep blessings coming for continued singing her songs of life!❤❤❤😂😂😂
The first tune is an instrumental version of "Change Partners". Saw her at the Vanguard in 1990, and met her briefly afterward. Her speech pattern gate was identical to her singing style.
first song at 02.02 is Change Partners by Irving Berlin; at 24.50 is Soothe Me by Joe Green; playout instrumental at 40.58 is Blues For Big Scotia by Oscar Peterson
Miles Davis, having broken out from Parker, was being touted as the latest, greatest thing and skids were greased for big release, tour, and anticipated success. Opening date prior to NYC kickoff was in DC with lots of press. Davis had Horn planned for intro - manager seemed to agree, then reneged at last minute with another act. Davis, never easy, canceled his own appearance if Shirley wasn’t put on. Well, it was done and Ms. Horn done went and stole major thunder. Perfectly Jake with Davis, who had been devoted fan as teenager, and remained so, collaborating on later sessions. Big balls indeed for Miles to follow Shirley, doting press corps fluff notwithstanding.
The 8th number here: "Old Country" is from the great coloured singer Dianne Reeves's album The Grand Encounter and seems to have further echoes in it of George Gershwin's epic song "Summertime".
The First track must surely be Change Partners (And Dance) which I think was Irving Berlin's... Surely ["Don't call me Shirley!"] Shirley certainly does it some great swing credit.
It's a bit of a mystery to me (??) why Shirley Horn's swinging version of Billie Holliday's sad-tinged ballad: "I'm Foolin' Myself" -- recorded in 1937 with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra -- appears in this Newport set as both the 4th and the 6th number, unless Shirley forgot she had already sung it once -- which I find somewhat hard to believe -- or unless she likes this number so darn much that it bears repeating!
Wanda Nowicki Yes, Wanda, it's entirely possible that that is what happened. I think, if you listen closely, she makes a remark at one point about "getting lost".
It's almost too easy to forget what a great piano player she was, but her accompaniment of Carmen McRae on "Sarah: Dedicated to You" should have put all those questions to bed. She swings like few others.
Duhran Wilson Diana Krall sounds more like the foxy Julie London (married to Jack Webb of "Dragnet" fame, then to Bobby Troupe-- the composer of "Route 66"). Shirley was killing it as a local talent in the D.C. area but largely unknown to a wider audience. Then she got the call from Miles Davis, who was in love with her singing and playing. He was scheduled to play on Horn's blockbuster "Here's to Life" album (arr. by Johnny Mandel), but fate intervened (Shirley dedicates the project to Miles in her liner notes.) Diana has the same limited range as Julie and Shirley, plus a sultry but unemotional delivery and locked-in mannerisms. There's a reason some vocalists never become, like Nat Cole, a stand-up act (Nat was one of the 2-3 best jazz pianists of the '40s until he gave up his seat in favor of the really big money as a Sinatra rival). To my ears, Shirley's chord voicings and her touch are more personal and original than Diane's carefully crafted single note lines. Shirley plays piano for Carmen McCrae on the latter's tribute to Sarah, and it makes all the difference. Who would want to attempt to emulate Sarah? Shirley makes it feasible for Carmen through fresh arrangements and sparkling solos. --- Shirley wears this rhythm section like a night-gown, but listen to the heat provided by her drummer. he's no mere "cocktail drummer."

Wow! 🎉such talent only comes around once every century and she’s it !
trio.....my god, when the camera pulls back and you see that only 3 people were able to make this amazing music because of REAL talent
Shirley was, and is, one of the greatest artists ever, regardless of genre. May her brilliance shine-on forever..... Ramcey in Nashville
Quelle femme ! Puissance, profondeur et finesse ! Je suis bluffée aussi par sa maîtrise au clavier...en gants !!! Incroyable ! 💐💖👏👏
Shirley is absolutely SENSATIONAL ! What more can one say when a person can play the piano and sing with so much soul and emotion to such a high degree of excellence? God Bless you soul Shirley. You are missed by many people, but we are still listening.
Accompaniment :: Charles Ables on bass; Steve Williams on drums; Shirley herself on vocals and acoustic piano... a fantastically able trio.....

She was a muse, and incredible path to follow!
She’s the Queen! 🙏🏻
Shirley was a legend, bringing a classic sense of jazz and a beautiful interpretation of the music she loved.
Incomparable. Totally brilliant and incomparable. Shirley: we miss you!
Other worldly and lush. This was a captivating Jazz trio. Shirley you were magical indeed.
Good thing about accompanying yourself is you can stay out of the way of your own singing, and she does that so well. Other pianists take note! Piano takes up a lot of sonic space.
She's one cool swinging lady . Effortless even with her gloves on the keys! Brilliant!
21:53 SH's gloves come off (literally) ...
Beautiful singer. Beautiful pianist. Once in a lifetime. Incredible!!!
She sure can swing!!
Holy Shit. That's a trio? A trio for God's sake! Amazing.
Had the good fortune to see her perform before she passed away. Had no idea what I was in store for...she was truly amazing! such goooood music! Loving my Shirley!!! So Blessed to see her in a little school auditorium in Maine back in the 90's! She was elegant, funny, and oh, so talented!
First heard of Shirley Horn in 1993 when I read her album Here's to Life was voted best jazz album for 92. Bought it, hooked, and been collecting her lps.
Shirley is beyond words. She is that good!
What a trio,. Such joy for my ears. Thank you.
It's been awhile. Always like her renditions, she kept her chops up till the last.
Fantastic singer, fantastic piano player !!! Shirley is just a great name of jazz music
Thanks for filling in the missing songs. I went crazy trying to remember the first. Cheers.

C'mon GLOVES!! You better play Ms. Horne!!!!
The day she died the Public Radio station in The District of Columbia played a tribute to her - I went out the next day and bought every CD of her's in the store !!
I just love her so much. her voice, and piano is super natural and special!!
WOW. And in gloves yet. What a giant.
She sometimes wears compression gloves for the nerves in her fingers.
Fantastic piano playing by an underrated pianist! I believe the first tune is Irving Berlin's 'Change Partners'.
Fabulous concert here!
Thanks to the uploader.
Sydney,Australia
Ms.Shirley Horn, born this day, 1934.
so much class, and style and swing and wow! everything!!! she has always been my favorite......
FANTASTIC... RIP DEAR LADY ....YOUR MUSIC LIVES ON THANK YOU.....
I love her music, I didn't know anything about her until five years ago!!
I discovered her just yesterday! She is amazing! x
Track one should be titled 'Change Partners' and Track 5 is 'Soothe Me'
This is masterpiece theater right here. I've never heard a trio sound like a full jazz band.! Shirley had it all.Her Here's To Life CD is in a class by itself and set the bar ridiculously high for all who followed....yes that means you Diana Krall!!

1. "Change Partners" (Irving Berlin)
5. "Soothe Me" (Sam Cooke)
The first pianist I saw playing with glowes
The music of the wonder voices continue to move in time. It is a capture which will always be there.
A very gifted lady who God blessed with musical talent and a intertainerof great caliber ! A crowd pleaser Shirley is a artist of Jazz style. May YESHUA keep blessings coming for continued singing her songs of life!❤❤❤😂😂😂

Magnifique!!
Voice is one thing but what I loved most about her was her playing!!!!!

Wonderful Shirley Horn & Band!
Una exquisitez escuchar esta música.
That opening is Dabomb! The swing'nest woman on the planet!
EXTRAORDINARIA SHIRLEY HORN
Top class singer AND pianist !!
The 8th number here: "Old Country" is from the great coloured singer Dianne Reeves's album The Grand Encounter and seems to have further echoes in it of George Gershwin's epic song "Summertime".
+Greg Daugherty -- Greg, Thanks dude for the additional info...... Have yourself a Merry & Happy Feline Christmas!
After "Fooling Myself" - Blues "Soothe Me"
0:00:00 - Unknown >>>> "Change Partners And Dance."
Nice
A real star🎇🎹🎼!!
Brava, anzi bravissima!
0:00:00 is Change Partners by Irving Berlin
Awesome band!
Fabulous 👌🏾
The first instrumental song is "Change Partners" by Irving Berlin.
Unknown is 00:00 CHANGE PARTNERS AND DANCE WITH ME ? Irving Berlin
The First track must surely be Change Partners (And Dance) which I think was Irving Berlin's... Surely ["Don't call me Shirley!"] Shirley certainly does it some great swing credit.
It seems that every time I hear Shirley Horn I hear in part Nina Simeon whom I admire deeply.
The first song is "Change Partners"
respect my lady
ΙΤ 'S LIKE NOW AND HERE!!!
what a goddess!
change partners and dance with me🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶👍👍👍👍❤well done you 3 RIP Ms. Horn
Whoa yeah!
29:00 I think she meant to sing “I Just Found Out About Love,” she’s the absolute best but I think the rain and cold threw her for a loop
All around
D fantastic piano player and vocalist. Up there by Ella
The opening track which is a splendid piano performance, says 'unknown'. It's correct title is 'Change Partners'
25:00 Soothe me
The fifth song is "Soothe Me" (NOT the Sam and Dave hit). And yes, she sings "Foolin' Myself" before and after "Soothe Me"
how come she decided to play "Foolin' myself" before and after
"Soothe me" ?
@@KristinaRjazz I wish I knew. But the back and forth of blend musically is compelling.

that first song where it says "unknown", is titled "Change Partners"

tunefultony johnson I am pretty sure she repeats by accident. Must have lost her place in the set list.
Wanda Nowicki Yes, Wanda, it's entirely possible that that is what happened. I think, if you listen closely, she makes a remark at one point about "getting lost".

Timings are off. How Am I To Know? 16:49
An upright double bass would have been nicer, but she was an outstanding musician without a doubt!
Change partners is the first tune
She is pretty kind to those gentlemen movig the mic, "close enough" and a "thanks"...not like a lot these witches who have a 10th of her talent
Who r the members of her trio? They are incredible.
29:10 I think she was trying to do “I Just Found Out About Love”
Is it me or has Diana Krall "borrowed" many of the same phrasings?
Duhran Wilson Well, to her credit, she always acknowledges Shirley!
Duhran Wilson Diana Krall sounds more like the foxy Julie London (married to Jack Webb of "Dragnet" fame, then to Bobby Troupe-- the composer of "Route 66"). caponsacchi... Wow... What great insight... Thanks for sharing
+Duhran Wilson She wishes!!........
Ms. Krall isn't playing in the same ballpark....
Anyone know who's on bass and drums?
Diana who?
Who is on DRUMS??
Steve Williams
