I was so blessed to have seen her live at the Annenberg in Philadelphia. It wasn't long after her comeback album "Here's to Life". She was amazing, but that was no surprise. The early 90s was a special time for jazz. There was such a resurgence of artists who had been away (i.e. Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, Little Jimmy Scott, Nancy Wilson, etc.). I was so fortunate to have seen three of them live. And now every last one of them is gone. Makes me sad. I miss them all.
She is the only jazz singer I have found to this day that can capture that specific feeling of loneliness, sadness and quietude all at once with her voice perfectly. Just a remarkable lady.
A wonderful relaxed Album..... Shirley Horn, let me write to heaven where you for sure are : I am in deep love to your voice and thank you so much for this gift you made to the world....
One reason that I love ballads is that I can actually hear the music; I can hear the chord changes. The chord changes on this are enrapturing, delicious, sheer ear candy
She's is and was and an Amazing Class Act!!! The performance she gave to us was phenomenal...I experienced her excellence when I was "Sweet 16"...I was graced with my mom and one of my sisters. It was one of my most memorable moments...
A sheer masterpiece. I collected her albums back then but missed this one until today. I was in tears at times. Her song selection and delivery speak right to me- they cut right through me. What a talent! What a loss.
Today, I learned of Shirley Horn while listening to the radio in the car (the song was: Here’s to Life, & I fell in love with the song & her voice. Of course, I immediately searched for her music on UA-cam and added several songs to my “Songs” playlist. I’m finding new songs by Shirley, and they are all beautiful). Which I would have known about her years ago.
I was only aware of Shirley Horn when she won Best Jazz Album for 1991 with You Won't Forget Me. Been collecting her cds. Love her absolutely. Her delivery, timing, phrasing, never hurried. Fabulous.
Masterpiece, indeed. At first, I thought it was an early record of hers, one of her 1960s outings (along with the great Travelin' Light, GRP/Impulse !, 1965). But it's well one of her best in the late 1980s. Excellent stuff from A to Z. Hats off Shirley and thank you 4 sharing your gift ! You're no longer with us but your music still lives on and we still cherish it.
Shirley Horn so very well cultivated the art of the ballad that it could be easy to overlook the fact that she was also a skilled and brilliant accompanist. I don't know if she's ever done a trio album. If she did, it's something I might spend money on.
Shirley Horn (piano) Charles Ables (bass) Steve William (drums), a 1988 album. The tracks are 00:00 Since I Fell for You 07:19 You're My Thrill 11:45 How Long Has This Been Going On 18:54 My, How the Time Goes By 24:09 Summer (Estate) 32:53 Forget Me 36:36 I Watch You Sleep 43:15 Softly As I Leave You 46:18 Dindi
Where in the world did those lyrics to the verse of How Long Has This Been Going On come from?? At 11:45. Ira Gershwin did not write that, did he? Has anyone heard those lyrics before? I need to know!
Aika viileää, hiponee täydellisyyttä, samoin ikuisuutta. Tuskin kävi koskaan 🇫🇮 . En usko että juu. Oli myöhäänkukkija = late-bloomer ...kuten ..Lee Remick. Äänitär ! Carmen Lundyn versio DINDIstä kuitenkin ylittänee tämän (?).
utterly sublime chord changes and self-accompaniment... this album should have been a grammy winner...

Of all the great jazz singers, Shirley mastered the art of making love to the lyrics...

Love her absolutely. Her delivery, timing, phrasing, never hurried. Fabulous.
Best female jazz singer in history

Divino esse álbum, eternamente Shirley 🎶🎶🎶🎵🙏
i am short for words.....JUST AMAZING!!
The voice a blend of song and spoken word in a cadence and rhythm impenetrable.
Shirley Horn so very well cultivated the art of the ballad that it could be easy to overlook the fact that she was also a skilled and brilliant accompanist. I don't know if she's ever done a trio album. If she did, it's something I might spend money on.
This version of Estate is fabulous !

Cool!! You have a YT channel, I had no clue!
Diana Krall: take notes, this is how its done.
Diana's version is also good for the ears!
shirley horn was supposed to go to france for a jazz vocal festival. it didn't happen. too bad i've always regretted her impediment. We were in 2000
