In this episode, You will learn some of the many different varieties of fruits and vegetables being served at the Woodstock Fruit Festival.
John will go around and tests many fruits at the Woodstock fruit festival with his Portable Refractometer that measures the total dissolved solids in the fruit including sugar, minerals and more so you can see for yourself the quality of the fruit served at the Woodstock Fruit Festival.
You will discover how you can use a simple tool to test the quality of your fruits and vegetables to ensure you are also eating the highest quality fruits and vegetables money can buy... or you can grow.
In the first 10 minutes of this episode, John will summarize the entire episode for you if you don't want to watch the whole thing.
You will learn John's recommendations to the Woodstock Fruit Festival so that it can IMPROVE the quality of the fruit being served to all the attendees.
    His recommendations include:
    1. Brix testing fruit before it is purchased to ensure a "set standard" is being met.
    2. Purchase a higher percentage of Organic Fruits and Vegetables
    3. Purchase more LOCAL grown food Farmer direct which is usually higher quality
    4. Have options at Dinner for more flavorful using herbs and spices and a higher fat than 80/10/10 recipes.
    5. Compost Food Waste to regenerate the earth and reduce the carbon footprint of the event
After watching this episode, you will learn why John shares his recommendations and opinions with the Woodstock Fruit Festival and how you too can improve the quality of the fruits and vegetables you are eating.
Near the end of this episode, John will get the opinions of his girlfriend as well as a few random attendees of the festival.
Finally, John will share with you how you (and the Woodstock Fruit Festival) can get some of the best Florida grown fruits delivered direct.
After watching this episode, you will be empowered to check the quality of your fresh fruits and vegetables with a brix meter. You will learn how to source higher quality fruit so you can have a greater quality of life.

I am sorry to hear this John but in past years I did not need a meter to tell me that some of the produce that was offered to the participants of The Woodstock Fruit Festival was not up to par. I feel the way Michael handled this just shows me that instead of trying to resolve or improve the situation he decided to punish you for bringing it the forefront like he is trying to hide this issue from the participants. Very unethical of him. John just chalk it up as a learning experience and stand your ground. Showing the people what they are consuming is important and Michael does not understand that and or Michael does not follow your vision. If Michael did follow your vision he would have not punished you for bringing this information forward....

I regard John's information and videos so far above any festival, it doesn't even seem like it should be an issue. I'm not in Johns shoes but I would like to see him just shrug his shoulders and get on.

The Meter is good because you can now measure that quality and tell someone who has never eaten is just thinking of eating it just how good it is.

I want to publically comment that I changed the title of this video to "Does the Woodstock Fruit Festival Serve Excellent Quality Fruit to Attendees ?" at a friends request, as they felt it would be a better title. The original title of this episode was "Woodstock Fruit Festival Serves Poor Quality Fruit to Attendees?"

Thanks for being honest, John. I feel like the biggest mistake was dragging Woodstock into the practically uncontrollable fact that our agriculture system needs improving, and with such a title. I'm sorry about the decision that was made. I hope you and Michael can talk and come to a conclusion that is best for everyone in the future.

I found your channel years ago before any of these other popular vegan youtube channels. Screw them. I could say more, but it's probably not necessary. I understood your intention in making that video. Seems they don't have even a basic capacity for human empathy. Go if you want but if you don't, that's what they deserve.

Thanks John for putting yourself out there to make an informative video. The only people who dont appreciate this kind of video probably see honesty & transparency as a threat & that doesnt put much substance regarding what their values are. Keep being you John, you are awesome :)

They do not even look like good watermelons. What is even the point of going to a fruit festival if they are not even offering quality fruit? And for some reason I thought it was all going to be organic or at least pesticide free. I can just stay at home and eat grocery store produce.

  • @InHisName999
    @InHisName999 7 років тому +15

Seeing that they serve all that pesticide and X-rayed crap just sucks. I could do better at Costco even though I eat about 90% local and 99% organic. I may drive an old Toyota but my body is like a Cadillac. Love You John and keep up the great work!

I don't see any reason to be offended by the title. You are showing them a problem that they could embrace. It raises my awareness and would rather make me want to go there and see how good they are doing with their vendor choices. On top of it you are offering a solution. They should be grateful to get your endorsement and build on it for their own growth.
    Thank you John.

  • @ThePlantBasedHomestead
    @ThePlantBasedHomestead 7 років тому +1

John, I am whole-heartedly grateful that you are transparent. If anyone has been following you, they'd know that no matter where you go, even the past several years at the Woodstock Fruit Festival, you are open and honest about the food, the quality and it stands by the values that you've set in your UA-cam video's. Please don't ever change because you ruffle a few feathers! I don't think I've ever thought of you as malicious or full of drama. In fact, I respect you because unlike a lot of other RAW Foodists or Vegans with UA-cam Channels, you seem to steer clear of it all and get to the (excuse the pun) meat of the matter. ;)
I haven't been able to afford to go to the Woodstock Fruit Festival with my husband and 4 year old daughter. It's far too expensive. I live in Central NY. To pay that kind of money for less than par at a festival that is supposed to surround itself with quality fruit is just disappointing. This would be a special family vacation and we don't get to take them very often. I would want the best quality of food above all else because that's what we're going for.
Finally, my husband and I have set out on a journey to better health so we'll be alive to see our 4 year old daughter grow. I'm off my insulin pump and he is off cholesterol medication, etc. While we're both still trying to move past the oils and processed vegan junk, channels like yours all these years have helped us find better health and nutrition. We even have a good sized garden where our daughter helps to grow and eat her fruits and veggies. Anything else, we buy at a farm stand and NOT the farmers markets and try not to use the markets as much (though it's hard come winter time around here). YOU have enabled us to enjoy staycations like taking a drive to the farm stands and eating our organic peaches with the juice falling down our chins right there at the farm. To taste our own tomatoes which are sweet and juicy from our garden (we never knew they could taste like this...store bought sure doesn't taste like this!).
Please keep being YOU! I like that your not taking the popular road. I like that when I go to your video's your talking TO me and whomever is watching instead of looking at the computer and welcoming specific people from specific parts of the world for conversational purposes. You have a story to tell, you have information to teach and help people to get healthy and love what their eating. You are not judgmental for the most part. You even state here that if less than par fruits and veggies are not available, then by all means EAT WHAT YOU HAVE!! It's better than a burger and fries and it is!
Your amazing john. I hope one day my family and I could meet you. Until then, we wish you and your wonderful girlfriend the absolute best and can't wait to see what the future holds for you both. "Where one door closes, another one opens". Don't forget that. Honesty and integrity will always win in the end even if feathers get ruffled dear friend!

  • @DonnaldaSmolens
    @DonnaldaSmolens 7 років тому +3

As a professional artist when I did festivals as a vendor, I only did the juried ones because I knew my work would look good and sell well if it was in with the same high quality work. Why not have that same attitude with the WFF? Using Brix meters to test samples, checking for organics, and these kinds of things would raise the quality of the festival. If they are just in it for the money they will just let anyone in who can pay the vendor fee. I would imagine that the fruit vendors that care about the quality of their produce are not happy to be next to non organic or irradiated produce vendors. I see nothing wrong with your video, it is just your opinion.

Hi John, you put out informative, good quality videos and this is just another one. This is something that I'm interested to hear about and appreciate you bringing this info to us, your viewers. What this person did was so childish, he obviously has some issues with himself. I've been wanting to go to the Woodstock fruit festival since I first heard about it and if I lived closer I would.
Hearing that you were a presenter would make me want to attend even more, in my opinion you would be one of the top speakers there that I would want to hear talk. You promote this event in the video and I don't see what the problem is. Not have you as a speaker is their loss.
Would you please consider starting something similar to the Woodstock fruit festival down here in South Florida? I'm sure many people would go as we have many new juice bars and vegan places here now. Thanks for all of you're hard work to bring this valuable info to us. -Maria

It's very hard to get quality fruits & vegetables in New York! Our climate here is not good to grow your own vegetables and summer is not long enough. There is a place called "THE ORCHARD" in brooklyn new york. They order their fruits & vegetables from all over the world and they are in season. Everything sold in "The Orchard" tastes as sweet as sugar. But it is very expensive to purchase fruits & vegetables because they know it's hard to get this stuff here in New York. It would be nice if you read this John to offer us information on where we can order or purchase quality fruits & vegetables like you did in this video.

Tell me about it. Try living over here in the UK!! the quality varies from just about edible to truly disgusting. Most of our fruit is imported because we don't have the weather to grow fruit all year round. I only eat fruit or vegetable that is in season anyway so I eat fruit from the garden for 5 months of the year and just go without in the winter (surely we're not mention to eat fruit in the winter anyway)

I am so disappointed in Woodstock. I had this perfect fruit utopia envisioned in my mind. A vacation of super optimal fruit with the great "guru's" and healthitarian commoners of the raw fruit and greens world. And hear my favorite people teach like John Kohler . I am not going to pay that kind of money to attend, take time off work, fly to the other side of the country and rent a room for nothing special and not hear my favorite people speak. This practice will be the end of Woodstock.

damn! all of this seems already known--aren't the watermelons donated to them? It's an issue that shouldn't be taken negatively(since we *KNOW* how easy it is to eat delicious food at WFF) This is an opportunity for WFF suppliers to "up" their game. Every year seems to get better and better. yes, the title is certainly misleading. Maybe it should be which fruits to avoid at the WFF(though it changes year to year) or another "how to pick the best fruit" video. I love WFF and take to heart the effort that is made to make it happen. your opinion, honesty, and enthusiasm for the event is appreciated for someone like me, who is trying to stay in the loop about what goes on in the raw food world.

I ordered from Rain one time. I paid close to $70 for 11 pounds of fruit...I was told that I would receive closer to 13 lbs, and unfortunately the vast majority of the weight of my box was filled with two huge mamey sapotes, of which I am NOT a fan. The quality of the other fruits were good, not amazing. One sapodilla was quite nice, although the other had a few small worms in the stem end. For the cost, I just can't afford it.

Serious question: Can that Brix stick be used to measure sugar in the urine of a diabetic to see if there is also alcohol in the urine to look for liver damage? Since the wine industry is using it for this same testing. It seems they use it to test for sugar-alcohol. Diabetics can actually urinate alcohol from the sugar in their blood. This is what causes non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, deadly UTIs, and chronic yeast infections. The usual blood testing kit can not show what is being urinated, and this Brix may help solve a major health crisis from diabetes. Milk Thistle is the cure to diabetes, but the blood test kit would never show if there are trace amounts of sugar and alcohol in urine, and the diabetic would still need to up their dose of Milk Thistle.
I should clarify that I am talking about the effects of type 2 diabetes, which is a disease I like to call "Fermented Blood Sludge". It is the FBS that slowly kills organs. We have all seen the video of the squirrel who got drunk off of a fermented Jack-O-Lantern. It is the sugar/yeast content that caused it to ferment. This is what happens to the blood in a type 2 diabetic. Their blood mimics that of a heavy drinker. The blood sugar meters only test for sugar in the blood. This Brix may help detect sugar-alcohol in urine.

Trey told me you're headed to the Costa Rica Fruit Festival. Afterwards, have you any plans? I invite you to a post festival event Lessons for Life Living Foods Jungle Retreat at La Joya del Sol that I'm putting on. THere's a lot more fruit trees here, over 1200 now, and more biodynamics incorporated with permaculture. I taught fruit tree pruning to over 50 local organic farms since youve been here, including the locals who had no idea how to maintain healthy fruit trees. Good subject for a video. Local permaculture experts, including Durga at Sat Yoga where I regularly teach pruning, has said my trees look the best she's ever seen in her career. I also sell fruits at the local organic market every Tuesday, now the second largest organic market in CR. I'm a founding member. I sell jackfruit, biriba, chocolate sapote, mangosteen, rambutans, avocados, wild tamarind, and some dehydrated fruit rollups. The waterfalls will be raging, too. Would love to see you again. I go for the people and the experience and the connections. I really don't care how good the fruit is technically-speaking. I know it will be a greater variety than I normally can obtain in Monroe, Louisiana. I also know that dinner selections are unique, and I learn a lot in the kitchen by being a volunteer and co-creating meals with awesome foodies. I think the positive vibes of the people raise the already high vibration of the fruit and veggies.

I love your vids! I was expecting a video a bit more neutral but this is a definite takedown of the WFF. I can kinda see why Michael got a stick up his ass about it. I'm guessing their argument is that when you are providing such huge quantities of fruit, it's financially and logistically prohibitive to use only organic local farmers who provide the best fruit. People who want to eat that way can do it at home and people come to WFF not just for the fruit, but the activities, speeches, friendships, experience etc. However, good on you man for calling it how you see it. I found this vid interesting and I have to say I had a laugh every time I heard "sub-par". Ouch!

truth hurts, at first anyway. you impacted Woodstock's level of awareness and also their capacity regarding their business ethic and choices regarding how and who they resource to reach their " goals", and why. this is why they responded with literal fear, and combativeness. such a clear sign that they themselves realize they are not hitting the mark regarding what they are marketing. so, of course, they didn't like that. standard human pride in action. this is merely a good lesson for them, offering a very powerful opportunity for them to launch from for needed improvement, as is what you initially intended. we all face this in this life. they are not the acceptation. this can help them, if they can be open.

You would think that a fruit Festival like Woodstock would already have these quality control standards in place. Also I would expect it to have a majority organic fruit. If they charge that much then I would expect that these things will already be in place as a matter of course. I think your video is spot-on and I believe your intent was to improve the festival to the point where it already should be.

This is the same conversation i have with my husband. I wouldn't eat most of the fruit he thinks tastes great. I believe he's not even really tasting it. In his mind he's tasting what he wants it to taste like.I think that's a lot of people. Close your eyes and put fruit in your mouth and if you can't identity it then it's NOT RIPE. Not having all Organic and Radiated fruit at the WFF was very surprising to me considering it's a FRUIT Fest. Seems you'd want to go out of your way to get that right (especially since it's not a cheap event to attend). Sorry to hear about the WFF situation. Your a good guy but obviously they didn't see your video as being helpful. But please never stop being truthful like so many of the other raw vegans with UA-cam channels who have lost their way.

I believe your intention was to be honest with the information you provided. it can be offensive to the people that are not doing best practices and that also reflects on the event organizer. Truth always hurts! lies will change but truth will remain the same. You have the honesty of a child and this is the way we all would make a better world, however, we don't live in that type of world yet. Change will only come when people start taking responsibility for their actions and start being mindful and understanding that all they do has a consequence. Even their tiniest action.
Move on John, and know that your pain only comes from the ego which is the only thing that gets offended ever. The reactions of people are usually what lets us know where they are in life. No need to prove your self right or wrong. As you said you know your truth. Let it go and let it be. Love everyone and please no one. Keep shinning your light with good intentions and definitively pay attention to your titles as those too must be honest. we need to change the ways we do things. we cant write controversial things to get reviews, this is like not following best practices when planting foods that end in our bodies. Honesty is key at all times. People will come to your channel because they want to hear the truth not because they are pulled by gossip titles.
I never write in channels but I felt compelled to give my opinion here. After this, I will probably not follow since my intention is to give you some clarity, not to start any chats 😊
May the sun shine upon you and all the people and mother earth. May all one day realize how important it is to be responsible so we can sustain in this planet.

Thanks, John. Very informative video on testing BRIX of fruits and vegetables using a refractometer. I like and learn from your investigative journalism and appreciate your candor. I do think it was not your most skillful move which became like an expose which backfired on you personally. TRUE INFO OR NOT.
Michael, the head of WFF was understandably displeased when his 'baby', the festival was criticized by someone of your popularity and influence. Your research could have been shared privately with the WFF staff with a list of your good suggestions and may have gotten a small leaning in a direction of getting the festival better quality produce.
That said, I agree with everything you pointed up: that produce's quality IS important, that being organic and ripe is key. Think backwards about it- it's sort of like being at somebody's wedding on the back row doing a video pointing out the couple's faults, rather than supporting their positives. You can still do what you do with more of a friendly suggestion nature of how to improve on a good thing and make it better...and leave it at that. You actually did that at first of the video but then gave way more energy to that the produce was lacking. You know they did their current best all things considered. By putting MORE weight on the POSITIVES than the negatives you'd always be welcomed and comments taken to heart. That is my opinion, my brother in health. I am a big fan of your videos and service. Criticism needs to be tender and quiet, praise loud and jubilant.

    • @broadcasttttable

Nice comment. I agree. My one "however" would be: I would think, for WFF's part, to avoid this kind of thing in the future, that they would post an open letter on their website just alerting possible attendees that the WFF does its best to obtain organic produce but because of cost/logistical issues and individual tastes of the attendees, can't always guarantee that every piece of fruit will meet everyone's desires/expectations. I understand that, heck, grapes are one of my favorite foods but I know I can only get organic ones 2 months of the year where I live. If that's a deal breaker for some, so be it, at least you've been transparent. I would like to go for the camaraderie/events/sense of community as much as for the food. Have they posted such a letter? If so, never mind! ...lol

The progressive degradation of food quality is on purpose. They want us sick, and easier to control. That's why I'm starting growing my own foods next March. I just bought a sprouting kit with organic seeds and amazing soil from Dr. Mercola. I will be growing a gigantic garden next year with the best seeds, the best soil and minerals so that I no longer have to depend so much on the system and its poor-quality whole foods. John, you really are a true inspiration and who cares if they kicked you out of talking at the Woodstock Fruit Festival because of this video? You've got an online viewership and you impart more information and wisdom than 99.99% of anyone I've ever seen. As far as a raw foods diet and how to get the best out of your food, you are the BEST. Keep it up like you have for however many years you've been educating people. You are the best role model I've found for the raw foods diet and you look so young for your age! I mean, so do I, but you're looking mid-20's when now you're like mid 40's. That's so awesome to think how I can look even younger and live longer on a high-quality produce diet. Thank you for all you've done.

Fruit quality matters to me but other food issues were the main reason I have not gone back to the WFF since I went in 2013. That year, there were almost no bananas or mangoes or dates on the first 4 days or so, just locally sourced stone fruits like plums and pluots, and concord grapes- both of which give me a stomach ache if I try to eat them in large quantities. I was soooo hungry for huge chunks of time when there weren't any other fruits available. So I was not a fan of the locally sourced philosophy, because stone fruits and grapes are the specialty of upstate NY, and I really can't eat them much. Variety was really low at the festival for several days. And I really need tropical fruits to be able to do this lifestyle, and I don't mean the not so calorie-dense longan (the only tropical fruit which they seemed to have in abundance that year). I do workout regularly, and I actually need enough calories. Also, the salad spring mix at night had mustard greens in it which I am mildly allergic to (there were no other salad options), and the zucchini skins in the raw dishes at night gave me incredibly bad stomach pains and bloating that felt like my intestines would explode. I actually had to lie down a couple nights in utter pain until I realized I should hoarde fruit for dinner and avoid the salads entirely. It might not have been as bad had there been avocado in the salads to soothe my GI tract from the peppery mustard greens, but the avocados they served that year were rotten inside with brown spots everywhere and no one could eat them. By the time they brought out durians (only the second time after the opening day) I was starving for calorie dense fruit but there were limits on how many each person was allowed to have= only 1. I was never more cranky in my life and wished I had been able to leave the compound to get extra food. What was worse is that people said there had been dates served at some point during the day, but these always were served when I was in class it seemed. They did not make sure that high calorie food was available all day long, so you could miss out if you were not constantly hovering around the kitchen waiting for it to come out. Also, I had breakfast really early in the morning before classes, and at that hour there was hardly any fruit to be had in the dining hall except melon. One of the only times I got high calorie food was when you made your coconut-date vanilla pudding in a class demonstration and shared it with us. It was so wonderful, and I still have your recipe book to make it. But anyway, I felt like if I were to go back to the WFF, I'd have to drive with my own car filled with extra supplies of avocado, bananas, dried bananas, dates, and mangoes in order to make sure I had enough to eat when I was hungry. I wrote the organizers about much of this, but since they didn't respond, I don't know if they fixed these issues in 2014-15 (from your video it seems that dates are now available all day is that really true? and the jackfruit and sapote were not available in 2013 that I saw which is an improvement), and I was unwilling to risk having the same thing happen again. I thought if I were able to go another time I would go to the Hawaii one where at least I could eat the local fruits more easily than those of upstate NY. I know this isn't the point of your video, but I was just too hungry based on the variety of fruit that was available at the WFF. Assuming I had got enough calories at the bare minimum, then I would have been more concerned about the vitamin and mineral content of the food. I do prefer fruits that have more flavor, organic fruits, and fruits that are optimally ripe, and more nutritious. But at a minimum if I'm light headed from lack of sufficient calories, then that's what I'm likely to think about. p.s. Yes, I would like it if the WFF had ordered from Miamifruit because then I would not only be able to get adequate calories from tropical fruit, but it would be the best tasting and most nutritious and most varied tropical fruit. Those marshmallow-y type bananas you tried looked delicious, and so did the rest of the tropical fruit in the back of that pickup!

Wow! sorry to hear about your experience at the 2013 WFF. Every year, they have been making things better. Last few years, many nights they had chopped organic romaine lettuce for dinner or spring mix. They also seem to have ripe (conventional) bananas and even dates at most times of the day for snacking. So they are taking suggestions and improving the event. I'm sure they find it challenging to accommodate all 600 people, but it appears they do the best they can. The chef will (to some extent) try to accommodate special needs within reason.

They should have named it the fruitarian festival instead because that seems what it’s really supposed to be about.

Do you think he doesn't want to get organic produce if it is possible? Honestly this sounds very childish and passive aggressive, since we don't know the financial restrictions and logistic issues they were under. Also, the WFF is not on another planet - they are affected by the quality of modern produce just like anyone else (who doesn't have his own garden..). If anything, they can now use the funds previously allocated for you to improve the quality of fruit and you could attend as a paid attendee, thus helping them "raise the bar" and get even better fruit. Sounds like everyone would benefit.

With the food distribution on our planet is as is and you state that certain fruit is not worth your time! The fruit that comes my way is sometimes excellent, mostly average and sometimes poor; yet I remain grateful for all God's gifts, and before eating take time to be thankful and to pray for our brothers and sisters around the world who are hungry. It is a woeful reflection of our times that some can choose to eat 'the best fruit ever'; whilst others cannot feed their children.

John has the right to his opinion, and frankly, he is totally right. It has nothing to do with people who can or can not, eat fruits and vegetables.
We are simply talking quality of food here, and why not asked for the best quality , everybody wants the best quality that can be produce ; if its grown with love and attention to the quality of the soil etc then we can expect a high quality fruit . That is all he meant.

Snobbery, when over a thousand dollars is extracted from your pocket? Sounds like you are supporting a childish dictator. Do you think some people have the right to take lots of $$$ but offer little in return? Factory farming is not God's gift. It taketh away. John supports taking care of yourself. Supporting the factory farm complex just expands exploitation of the poor
