I recently purchased F80, shooting first trial roll of film with it. Mine came with the extra battery grip that holds cheap AA batteries. With this grip makes camera fit perfectly in my large hands, so very comfortable to hold. Lovely camera with all the controls familiar from using a Nikon DSLR, and my G lenses fit on with VR also working.

Thanks Geoffrey and sorry for my delayed reply. Yes the F80 is a perfect bridge from digital and can use the same glass as you say! Great work getting the AA grip! See my FG-20 video as I got the grip for that and love it! :)

Far cheaper to buy batteries for it with that grip, as well. With it you can avoid having to purchase the more expensive CR123A batteries.

Hello Matt: I just purchased a pristine and only slightly used N80 from a small camera store near me in New Jersey. I paid a great $79 for it. I had an N80 in the past that broke beyond economical repair, so finding this clean body was a real thrill. I also put the MB-16 battery grip on it as well. I have been shooting B&W film exclusively with it to include ILFORD HP-2 Super. You did a great comparison here. Well done!

I went even smaller when I decided to dive back into film. I picked up a N6006 and paired it with a 28-70 3.5-4.5D. I find it the perfect combo when I want to go out and shoot 35mm and not lug around a lot of gear. I love the F100 though, works with all my Nikon glass. One advantage I do see that the N80 has over the F100 is the manual cable release. The F100 I have to dig out my release for the D850. There is something to be said about simplicity.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

Nice! Yes sorry I should have mentioned the cable release! Yes the F100 is a keeper but I will stick to small MF bodies I think for my travel setup. I just ordered the 28-50mm f3.5! :)

I have an N80 and an F100. Something I think you missed- for eyeglass wearers, the N80 viewfinder is good, the F100 is outstanding. All the frame edges visible without having to peek around. Full info along the bottom of the viewfinder frame, even slightly better than my F3 HP

I can actually use my F100 without my glasses on, the F80 had a cheaper viewfinder that requires me to keep my glasses on. I believe the F100 is a pentaprism while the F80 I believe is a pentamirror. Some google links say the F80 is a pentaprism, but I swear mine looks like it’s a pentamirror.

The Nikon f100 was a wonderful camera. It retailed at about £895 At the time. You have got the cheaper of the two model. Why two models , I am afraid you appeared to have the first model. That was very heavy on batteries . Expect to get about four rolls of film per set of AA batteries. The later version with built n battery box was of course a lot better, but was a bit dearer at £1050! If I remember, and yes I did own the earlier version

The 28-80G is *best* being used at F5.6-F13 aperture, only.
But then, it's good enough for the task.
      Pro's
      very light & small
      weights almost nothing
if one is lucky, you can buy it for peanuts,
      often is a *free* kitlens with a F65/F75 & F80.
28-80 "G" lens is minimal sharper, better than both older 28-80/3.5-5.6
smaller than the previous 28-80 I & II generation
      Con's
      very simple lens design
      some distortion @28mm
avoid F3.5-4.5 apertures, too soft, also corner sharpness
      mediocre, way cheapskate build quality.

Nikon FG was my first film camera purchase, which I bought (supposed to be for prop use only) from fb marketplace for $30 CAD ($22 USD) and it came with 3 lenses (one of which is the awesome Vivitar 28mm f/2.0). I still love it for the very same reasons you listed. Bonus feature: TTL Flash works! At least with an SB-600...

I bought a Nikon N80 a few years ago specifically to be able to bring it to a (no professional cameras allowed) concert. It was Queen with Adam Lambert. The camera served its purpose brilliantly in combination with an AF Nikkor 85 1.8D, although at the concert I only used manual focus. Shots came out lovely. After the concert I even did a photo shoot with it but to me the autofocus in dim light situations lacked a little in comparison to my F100 but that’s to be expected. Naturally, like an idiot I sold it. Fast forward a few years and I shoot street a lot more and now I’ve come to the conclusion it would be a great companion out on the streets with my Tamron 45 1.8. Needless to say I will repurchase another copy. Great little cameras. Cool video Matt, cool channel!

    • @eladbari

So in dim lighting, you're saying the F100 performs better in autofocus even though the F80 has that light that flashes for focus assist (the F100 doesn't have that)...🤔

    • @TheFilmFellow
      @TheFilmFellow 2 місяці тому

@@eladbari Yes! That’s exactly what I’m saying. The F100 has the Cam 1300 autofocus module which is superior the the F80/N80’s Cam 900 module. The F100 shares the F5’s module! So within the same EV range of 0-21 which both cameras have the F100 will outperform the N80. In addition to that I can mount my SB-600 on my F100 for AF focus assist which is also a light so all things considered, yes, the F100 is superior. I’ve owned both cameras!

The N80 is another sleeper of a camera. I’ve also owned mine since new; it was actually my wife’s travel camera way back when.
An excellent backup autofocus body. I use it with a grip which gives it a little more weight and stability, while also allowing the use AA batteries.

Nikon was the brand I started with, N5005! Back in secondary school. When I got back into photography a few years ago I purchased an F3 HP which I love. Now my Nikons have spawned into a bit of a collection. Nikon F3, F2, FE, F100, F601 along with some pretty decent glass. For years I identified as a Nikon shooter. Now I rely on Sony for digital although I still shoot my old D200. Leica M3 gets more shoot time than the F3 now. For me, they are all different brushes. I have both an F80 and F100 and generally agree with your conclusions. However, you left out some points worth mentioning:
For the F80, other pros include a quieter shutter and a better door latch than the F100. Both have plastic latches, but due to the design, the F100's is more prone to breaking. If it does, replacement doors run $100USD + on eBay.
The F80 also isn't limited to the hard-to-find CR123A batteries. The super cheap and light MB-16 grip allows using AA batteries, plus adds a bit more to the smallish camera to hold onto.
Negatives for the F100 (aside from the weak door latch), is the weak rewind prong in early models. It was corrected in later versions, but advising prospective buyers to avoid the older version (or at least pay less for it) is probably a good idea.
And no review of either camera would be complete without mentioning the annoying numeric Custom Settings Menus, which have no description of what the menu number is. One either has to rely on memory, or carry around a cross-reference sheet in print or on a phone.
Finally, as both a film and Leica enthusiast, I really love your videos. You're obviously experienced and very knowledgeable. However, I don't mean to be pedantic, but why then do you not know that 1/1000 of a second is stated as "one one thousandth of a second" and not "one over one thousand" of a second?" It's not colloquial or just another way of saying it. It's simply incorrect.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom, no problem. I had a Nikon N70 in the late 1990s. The UI was a little awkward at times, but otherwise a usable camera.
If people are looking at buying Nikon film cameras from this era, it's important to check to see how they function with the lenses they have or are planning on buying. For instance, the F/N80 you reviewed supports VR lenses. The F/N70 does not. The auto focus will still work, but not the image stabilization. Prices are getting up because people are starting to notice these type of cameras, especially when the 'classic' style cameras are already sky high by now. It has one (or two) weak point though, the back door and battery cover latch is made of brittle plastic, which is well known to break without notice. I own the F75, also the F80 since it was released. The F80 however, suffers from detoriating adhaesive inside the artificial leather, and therefore becomes heavily sticky. I've used so far three (3!) F80/N80, and all become *very* sticky, which is a mess. Never had this issue with the F75. It happens with the backside of the F100 also...not that much, but i've handled some sticky F100...so that is a bad thing. The good thing is with the F80/N80: Autofocus. Bad things are that sticky body, and all plasticky build quality. there's also cheap but less advanced f801, and more new and "amateurish" f65, f75, which you can find for like $30; and also pretty affordable f90, which uses AA batteries (ebay prices varies from normal $30-50 to ridiculous)

Thanks John! Prices like that seem insane to me haha.. the batteries and a few rolls of nice film will cost the same! I have a soft spot for the manual focus bodies like the FG-20 I reviewed + the classics FE/FM/FE2/FM2. Those are still my go to bodies.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom my main concern is focusing on those older cameras (which I can't find at affordable for me price in my region anyways). I can zoom and focus on mirrorless at least. And those newer plastic cameras has focus confirmation and sometimes even really advanced features such as freeze-focus - shutter won't release if image isn't in focus, and it works with manual lens also. And I really hope that aperture and metering will work fine with my Voigtlander 58 1.4 since it has a chip.
      Upd.
I'd bought f65 or f75, but they require CR2 batteries, and as you mentioned it's not only pricier, but in remote regions of Russia it's really hard to find, AA on the other hand is everywhere (AAA as well, but not to the extend of AA).

It's the F100 that has the weakest door latch. The F80's is also plastic, but because it's a more rigid design, they almost never break.
Also. the stickiness can be removed in 10 minutes with 99% isopropyl alcohol available at any drugstore.

      exactly.
some of these cameras (including F100) can get a sticky outer covering where you place your hands. Internet searches suggest solutions to cleaning it up.
I love the diopter adjustment of both F100 and F80, but especially like the custom option of "GRID" that can be electronically displayed in the view finder. It helps me keep the shot horizontal, if that is what I want.

The weight penalty of a Heavy F5 is no different than carrying 3 plastic cameras (so as to have reliability) can be justified.
But, if I want to have something always with me, such as when on a bike ride, I'll opt for something simple and in-expensive to replace. It could be stolen, I could fall or crash, and I would think much about a cheap lost camera.
