A Day At The Shop With EricTheCarGuy

- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- I've had a long standing request to put a webcam in the shop so that viewers can see what goes on in my shop on a work day. I couldn't work that out, but I asked Cameraman Brian to follow me around for a day to document whatever he sees. I also told him he could edit the video. In short, I gave Brian creative license to follow me around in the shop for a day and create a video of what he saw. This is the video he came up with. I hope it satisfies the request for a shop day in the life of EricTheCarGuy.

That little wrench flick about seven minutes in was EPIC.
looked similar too the The Great Japanese Samurai flicking the blood off his Kitana Sword after beheading one of his victims.
Free Spirit * katana
Eric does flick wrenches often. Still like to notice that.
A mechanics spanner twirl is a art that takes a few years to master and to do without looking or even thinking about it, well at least it did for me before I stopped actually throwing my tools across the workshop.
Mr cool guy
Much respect for your work ethic as well as your tenacity regarding electrical problems. So many mechanics wouldn’t dare touch a car with electrical problems, at least the ones I know.
This was actually more interesting to watch than i had expected. Another awesome win for Eric!!
This was awesome Eric. Felt like I was watching a TV series. Would watch these all the time. We don't always need to watch detailed videos. It's nice to see "problems" come and the anticipation of the diagnoses keeps you drawn in. Thanks again and hope you do these more often. Maybe once a month or more.
Mmm, just love your morning.. Opening door, lightning up, let the keys fall on the desk, start workinng at 6:30. Just love your entreperneurship, greatings from Gotland, sweden :-)
ERIC! ERIC! You left cameraman Brian in the shop!
supernom
thats where he live's.
supernom He also forgot to leave food and water out for him.
supernom Poor Brian :(
Guys, guys, guys......guys!!
Stop worrying, if you watch the video again Eric has a whole bunch of mountain dew in his office/kitchen which brains allowed to at least get one if he is thirsty and all the crumbs Eric leaves from his lunch aswell.
: /
Jerry Velasco You bring up a valid point. I am no longer worried about cameraman Brian.
Really liked the format of this one car guy!
RedneckRectum Yea, I guess I can fix things from time to time. :)
EricTheCarGuy I sense a little sass car guy:)
For sure its all good
RedneckRectum Absolutely. Some of the angles framed by parts of the lift or the hoods of cars was incredibly artistic.
The good times of being a mechanic...blood, sweat and tears. God do I miss it. Kudos Erik, you keep me alive, thank you.
Poured myself a cup of coffee and watched the whole thing. Find these videos really entertaining since you get to ride along. Of course not as detailed as a specific video about some change of part, but it does not have to be. Amazing content here on your channel Eric, thank you for the effort you put into it!
Eric is a good guy, I just admire honest hard working people. Also love it when people share their knowledge to help others. God bless you sir.
Nice job Eric. I liked the different approach to your video this week. Fun to watch. Douglas
never seen this side of you before. it was totally awesome. the keys not being in the ignition, getting your clothing stuck twice on the same spot, not being able to fully diagnose a major AC problem within the time given, typical day for an independent shop. I hope to see the fix for that AC. Great video to end my day. Thanks Eric!
I love this video format! Please do more!
I agree. It's very entertaining to watch and you don't miss the important bits of the repair anyway.
A man that makes time to put his tools in their proper place at the end of a day is a craftsman. Come morning there is no searching for misplaced tools, good on you Eric. Thank you for the video.
Excellent video. I always appreciated the time and effort mechanics put into working on cars in their shops but this will be a good thing for others to see as many customers expect their car to be road ready in a few hours despite the car having major problems. It seems like they can't understand that there is diagnosing the problem, communicating with the customer the price, ordering parts, fixing the problems and then finishing the car which are a lot of steps. When I take my MB in for service at a local indy I tell him to take his time. Because of that my car is always serviced properly and I get top notch service. As a matter of fact he runs my car next door to a detail shop for a quick wash and vacuum at no charge. Treat your mechanic good and they'll treat you good.
Thanks...Always enjoy watching other professional mechanics...Been working in the automotive field for about 40 years and still learn things from other guys.
Interesting to see what issues people bring in daily for repairs, thanks for sharing.
I love this video. The best part is the clean up at the end. I took many shop classes in high school in 1983 through 1985 and the one cardinal rule I remember is always clean the shop at the end of the day. I practice this one rule everyday.
Hi Eric. Enjoying watching the videos and watching you Grow. I too am starting a UA-cam channel filming my day-to-day job as a automotive technician.
Eric please do more videos like this. Love being able to see what mechanics do on a day to day basis.
awesome video eric. cameraman brian killed it with the edit as well. stoked!
What I like most about your videos is that you keep it real. You have helped me out a lot on my breaks thanks Eric keep up the good work and keeping it real
That was cool as hell.I would like to see this again sometime.
just one guy doing all the work and filming video, thank you for your time eric. you are amazing!
I thought we might try something a little different this week. Don't worry, there's plenty of turning wrenches and getting dirty. ua-cam.com/video/-vZf7qx_Q_k/v-deo.html
Although not a fan of the toilet cam, I can't fault you for trying Eric.
EricTheCarGuy I kinda like this type of videos, oh and Elvis was the best part. Stay dirty..
EricTheCarGuy All three cars look like their hoods don't fit right or are open. If they're open, because never closed up right, since it'll be worked on later, it's understandable. But if that's how they all look, I'll have to ask: Are there really so many badly fixed collision damages out there?
Edit: OK, the Nissan had a fitting hood. 2 out of three where 1 is a known collision damage, that sounds more reasonable (but still a lot).
EricTheCarGuy Another thing I notice: Why do you leave your shop doors closed while running car engines inside? Isn't that quite dangerous, even in such a big shop like the one you're in right now? Why not see if one of your generous suppliers of stuff can give you an exhaust vacuum system for the shop to install, review and keep? Just thinking abour your health there...
EricTheCarGuy I know that you have probably been doing this for years, but when you removed your gloves, you blew inside them to push all of the fingers back out. If you are using latex gloves, you are inhaling latex particles. Inhaling this increases your risk of developing a latex allergy. If you enjoy using latex gloves, I would suggest you stop doing that, because latex free gloves suck and they are really hard to use. Just a pointer, no criticism intended.
kudos to all our hardworking auto mechanics that go through the trouble of properly diagnosing and fixing breakdowns. Great job Eric, I know exactly how it feels to feel "flat" at 32:55. Its hard not to get discouraged when a job doesn't get done, but just know that you do a great job, and your fans love you. Keep up the good work!
I'd like to see this turned into a video series; if not, at least a follow up on the accord.
Agree
David James Very yes!
please!

Dang, some times I feel like I want to do a road trip and drive all the way from California to your shop just to have you do a look-over of my own 00 Civic (with a Smog legal B18C5 engine). Been a long-time subscriber/follower of your videos and it always feels good to support small independent businesses like yourself. It's great to see you pull through both the good and the bad times and continue keeping your passion alive. Mad props and hope you continue to be successful in the many years to come.
This should be a reality show, had a lot of fun
Good on you, Eric. Love your honesty and it's becoming a rare thing in this dishonest world. Love your work, from Australia.
Thanks for posting this video. Always curious how others operate. You run a regular repair shop on top of doing your videos….do you sleep? lol And yeah, I've been known to throw my tool too! Great video!
@Joshua Grey [
Its amazing to watch you work at normal speed. You are Definitely a master of your trade, no movment wasted and all steps are planned.
I had to change the brakes all around on a customers car and they had wheel locks. We searched the car forever and never found the adapter. We had to call the customer and ask them to bring us the wheel lock and he didn't have one. He had to go buy one which took about 40 minutes. I hate wheel locks.
So you didn't have something else to work on while you waited on him?
Awesome!!! A new show begins, Inside the workshop !!! Congrats Eric and Brian!!!
Friends are the worst customers always expecting free work
Not always. Gotta be clear up front, time is money. If he was fixing it in their garage then sure, but it's his shop so he's on the clock.
Mechanics always overcharge. And I don’t mean a guy like Eric. He seems like he does good honest work, and also has to make a profit himself. But going to big name shops especially dealerships you get charged out the ass for anything. Even the most simple things like brakes and oil changes aren’t worth what they charge if people knew how easy they were to do. Some ppl just don’t have the space or tools so their kinda SOL. I got quoted like $450 for brakes one time. New pads and rotors on all 4 which is fckn ridiculous. That’s why it’s good to know ppl who will do the work for cheaper and you know them so you know they won’t be messing up anything and saying you need to replace it. I also got quoted $500 for a cv axle swap, which I know how to do and any skilled mechanic could get that done in 30 mins maybe less if they were trying to get it done fast. But a lot of the time they don’t have the parts and order them and that time your car is sitting on the hoist, they charge you for labour.. $125/hr. I dunno it just sucks everyone’s so greedy now a days. The price on everything has gone up from what it used to be years ago, even tho it’s the exact same parts.
@@LJT9393 450 for all 4 wheels and Pads is absolutely ok when the material is included. 250 to 300is alone the material and at least 3 hours labour.
Spelter yea that’s great if that’s what you believe. And I know that’s an average quote on this job, but if you actually knew how easy it is to do yourself you’d be appalled at how such a simple job can cost so much. And the reason I learn to do this shit is cuz my dads a heavy duty mechanic and can get me any part I need at mechanic cost. And when I look at that sheet stating the price NAPA charges wit their mark-up, and what mechanics get them for, it’s almost criminal they get away with charging so much. And they will drag out jobs just to charge you that $125/hr labour rate. This shop beside me once quoted me $500 to replace the passenger side CV axle.. now had I not known how easy replacing an axle is, I may have believed him when he said it’ll take about 3-4 hrs to do.. but I knew it was BS and took it to a shop that has reasonable prices and only paid $250, which is still most likely at least $100 more than it would’ve cost had I ordered the part thru my dad and did it but the axle was fucked and needed to be done ASAP. I do all the work at my dads as well so I can’t just work on it anytime since he lives like 25-30 mins away. He has also always told me that mechanics overcharge which is most likely why i ended up learning to do repairs myself after having to bring my car to shops for little stuff and paying $300-$400 for an alternator or something simple to fix. But hey it’s your money man, if your happy to pay that the go right ahead. I just know it feels better having that $200 you saved by doing it yourself, opposed to paying a shop that don’t give a fuck about you or your car but just see you as a dollar sign..
@@LJT9393 yes if course you could do it on your own. I did not say nobody with simple Tools and special knowledge could do it on a weekend in front of his house. But when my time is short and I work 50 hours a week or more, I would say 200 Dollars labour to change my breaks is not a ripoff. Here in Germany you do it because they charge an average of 700 to 800 and more to change them. 450 incl material is cheap. I have a garage with an lift and my friend and I we can do it by ourself, but I had times I did not even had the 2 or 3 hours to do it.
So everybody can do everything if he or her is willing to read and learn. Do some mechanics like breaks or even cylinderhead gasket is a piece of cake now after 12 years of working on this things. Really hard are electrical problems with new cars, but for us, it is an adventure to hunt and fix the problems. But if we have to do it for a living, you have to think about what you have to charge. If it is easy work, no problems come up, you earn money. If it is like Barbaras SUV, you loose money, and others pay more to compensate that. I know no professional car shop who handles it otherwise. And if you pay 200 for labour but he has problems and should have charged 500, it is your win this time. I had cars with literally all screws we touched broke of, we had to drill them out of the engine block or other positions, just to change the timing belt on that Golf mk2, we had 3 days and each day 10 hours because every screw was rusted to the engine, even heating them up and use an impact drive did not help. If it would have been a customer, what would you tell him after 30 hours of work, each say 70 Bucks. 2100 Dollars for changing the timing belt because he had a rustbucket. You can't charge that, so that is how shop owners calculate.
Thank it’s easy being an auto technician with your own shop, well it’s not! My heart goes out to you on those long days, working alone sometimes it feels like you’re the only person in the world who has these problems but be assured plenty of us other hard-working people out here working long long days too & can appreciate the hard work that you do.
YAY!!! this is perfect, i would LOVE to see more videos like this. :-)
"You forget the oil change sticker- the oil change never happened."
Something I found out REAL quick starting off as a GST. Paperwork is everything.
Eric in flat rate mode haha
bboyaddicted lol very true
I have followed you for years and this is one of my favorite videos because this is what we do.
I had to rewind and double take at that wrench flip
Kyle T that was smokin
I'm a mechanic and the "day at the shop" vids are my favorite because time management is so huge in my job but pretty much all mechanic training is "how" to fix not "when". This is a rare window into real mechanic work.
7:03 look at the flick of the wrench!
lol i noticed that too
What was that?!?! Yow
@@gfriedman99 it's called working
I actually really liked this video! It kind of gave me a small taste of what working day to day as a technician would be like. Really enjoyed meeting you Eric! And thanks to Camera man Brian for telling me to look out for this video!
I find time lapses of my day in the shop work well. I post up lapses of my work once a week or so. The last one was removing a dash on a Lincoln for a $20 sensor. Check it out on my channel it might be a neat thing to try I get a lot of views from them.
Amesie's Corner recommend watching this guy ^ Great videos
Excellent video! It looks just like what I go through daily also. I hate the stress of diaging electrical issues on an older car. Never know what your going to find. Thanks for the day. It helped me !
Whenever I think my job as a bicycle mechanic is a ball ache, I'll watch this.
Think of retirement and self motivate to greener pastures, or not......
You, Brianmoble1, and SMA are my only car shows I watch. Not only are the vids great, I trust you. I know that might sound weird but I have run into bad techs. You, sir, are one of the best I have seen. I have learned a ton. Thanks for what you do.
Can't belive you work alone, you do an amazing job.
would love to work and learn with you.
great video Eric, stay dirty
one of the best reality shows I've seen this year infirmative and educational.
The OCD in me would have to replace both wheel bearings.
drink15 Getting ready to do the same in my Blazer
drink15 Its CDO........whew. Much better now.
mminc81 CDO?

Patterns, patterns...
DE Nichols The letters are in alphabetical order now :)
You do very good work, Eric. Thanks for doing this "ride along with Eric" video. I had a Honda Accord identical to the one in the video. That Honda was a good car, and it served me well.
youre great Eric, hi from Ecuador. (you should hire some help, at least to clean the shop, or prepare your vehicles, trust me it worths it). keep going. i have a motorcycle mechanic shop and always watch your videos. ;)
And thank you, Brian, for bringing it all home. Editing can make or break the day.
It's tough having to do everything when you're a self employed business owner. Some very long days I bet. Nobody to fall back onto for a second opinion but also no one to boss you around. Do you find it less stressful now or when you worked at a dealership?
rol dac I'd judge by his health that this is less stressful.
Eric, I love this video! Also love the camera work! This is one of my favorite videos of yours.
You should include swearing and cursing Eric as when I'm in the shop and things are just a pain in the ass to do, I do alot of that lol
Lol me too......"fuck this shitbox" is my fave...
I hear yer man
Andrew Man I am glad he doesn't. I would unsubscribe if he were to do that.
Gabe Snode I like that he keeps his language good too. I was watching some tool reviews from RomanAutomotive that were unwatchable for this very reason. I needed the info. not the swearing. Unprofessional.
Got better chosen tools for less though.
Gabe Snode Big threat.
New wheel bearing AND rotors makes me smile. It's refreshing to look at.
And you clean-up Put tools away and go to the Dumpster, sweep floors? 92% people have no clue, or investment of tools or Knowledge to complete even the most simple task.
Eric , You really love what you do .
It shows .
video series. once a week. id be keen. ha
Really enjoyed the ride along with a day in the life of Eric's shop! I am a former dealership technician, and seriously considering starting my own business soon. Thank you for the video!
you should get a wire tracker to see if the wires from the harness actually go to the source of the problem.. it tracks the wire usually by sending a tone through the wire and uses a secondary handheld device that beeps when you're near the wire...they're mostly used by telephone companies...the power probe might have a feature similar to this....wiring diagrams are a pain in the ass!
YesIReallyDoLikeZebras It's also sold by Harbor Freight Tools. (Shameless plug for the china crap tools.) Pretty cheap and a decent investment. And now back to our video....
YesIReallyDoLikeZebras Right. Briansmobile1 put up a great video about that.
DE Nichols
that's probably where I remember it from!
YesIReallyDoLikeZebras
Great minds remember alike.
Eric that was fascinating and i truly hope you make this a series. Even bits and pieces of how you diagnose cars and doing the actual repairs was very informative.
Must have been desperate if they made the trip from Oklahoma to Ohio in the summer in a car with no A/C.
Eric, I really liked this video. I have to admit I felt a bit sorry for you over that A/C issue. What a pain! Keep up the great work.
I was wondering if you own the garage or rent it ? if u rent it whats the rent ? if u own it, how much does it cost to own such a nice garage ?
Probably a lease
Eric, TY for this video, I know it's older but it put a lot into perspective for me. (My Grandfather was a mechanic, and taught me.) I've been through a lot of what you've shown...
A lot of work for an $800 Accord
Once he gets that A/C working, it'll fetch $1,200
Two things with it, if you spend more Money more than Your cars worth it means it had a sentimental value, but if Your comparing the value and what is worth for you then maintaining it is not the thing.
Merl Klarhoelter
I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy and always DIY didn’t go to any mechanic. I took good care of it since day 1.
Excellent video sir. Working on cars is one of the best jobs that you can see what you accomplished at the end of the day.
Ah! leggo my eggo!! 😂😂
Your vigor gives me nostalgia every time I see it. I had a Red one just like that and I miss it so much.
Hello I am Faisal from Kuwait and wish you a happy life
Car Guy, this is one of my favorite videos because of it's realism which is probably why I began watching your videos. I can relate to all of the frustrating events you go through. I look forward to observing how you approach and size up a job and try to relate that to my own experience. This is fun stuff. Keep up the good work!
It's nice to see someone capture how boring it actually is to work on cars.
I liked this video a lot. The how to videos are fine when you have all day. But this one really showed the pace and thought process of when you've got to get it done.
You should use knee pads man, take the stress off your knee caps
Nice video Eric. It really puts into perspective of what a mechanic has to go thru. So the next time I think a repair is too high, I will have a greater understanding as to why. Much respest to you!
I notice you run the cars without the garage doors open that's not a good idea. I know these little rice boxes don't put out much emissions but still not good to breathe that in.
i noticed that too. maybe leave the door 2 feet open?
I thought the same thing. However, I came to the conclusion that there's most likely a ventilation system installed in his shop.
I know you Eric. Unwrapping the cartons for the new parts, like a child at christmas. Eager to get to work, solve problems and get the kick at the end. It's a special kind of feeling - Greetings from Sweden
Damn I wish you were my mechanic.
Great vid man......keep up the great work, your an inspiration to us tech's.
I especially like your electrical problem, been their, you did everything the way I expected you to do it. Wiring diagrams can be confusing but are necessary......again great job.
Just wondering, what car cameraman Brian drives?
Daniele Dal Col The Toyota from the wheel bearing video.
EricTheCarGuy its what my brother did on Big Island, now he works solely on exotic cars. Ferrari Porsche Lamborghini Astin Martin BMW Audi. As I've watched over the years, its still just nuts and bolts. He told me once while doing valve seats for a Ferrari, "Man made it, Man can fix it." Thanks for your UA-cam postings.
wow, good video...............just seeing your energy level change from start to end.............
Eric, what percentage of your shop repairs are actually turned into youtube videos ?? a very small percentage Im guessing ?

Thanks Eric for sharing your knowledge on video. I just replaced the front struts assembly on my odyssey which had a broken spring from riding through a pothole, although I have done it before I like to refresh and get advice from other experienced mechanic like yourself to accomplish the job safety.. Thanks again.
+EricTheCarGuy what mic do you use or recommend? I badly need to upgrade to a wireless setup!
Also you should do a series on video production and editing etc!
Jason! We both watch ETCG!
Bob Marley
Def one of my fav auto repair channels and forum etc...
That Toyota Corolla is a Face lifted 8th Gen. So it is actually either a 2001 or 2002 model. Great Video Eric!
Can I suggest an electric door opener/closer for your garage? It seems that you are wasting time with that time consuming door chain. Unless you like extra workouts.
Every repair garage that I have work done on my cars has them. The tech (you) can then just push the button and then focus on the next car repair. It should be a good investment over time.
***** We literally just push it up and pull it down by a rope. Very quick very reliable.
Shoot. I've had powered doors so slow if I was tired they'd about put me to sleep.
I loved watching a good mechanic work! Thanks for sharing!!!
Dammm did i just watch 37min of this video lol 👍
Like to see more of these, just shows we all go through the same things whether it be customer interactions or ordering parts...good stuff eric keep it up!
Unless your hourly shop charge is very very high I dont see how you made any money today????????????
john smith 8hrs of work at let's say $80/h is $640 in labor already. Even at $60/h it is still nearly $500 in labor. Okay the diagnosis process for the Honda took more time than it should so he can't charge full working hour for it, so let's say he only charge for 6hrs, it's still $360 in labor, plus the profit he earns from parts, would be around $400 minimum. Rent and electricity and etc for $100 a day, end up with approx $300/day on a not-so-busy day. 5 days/week and he'll end up with $60,000/ year MINIMUM. And with his reputation and experience and some busy weekend days he could earn 6 figures, not to mention his 900k subs UA-cam channel is another very profitable income source too.
john smith people ask me that same thimg all the time how can an appliance tech like me own bad ass homes cars trucks fixing appliances i tell em i make after taxes around 125,000 a year yes sir i make that much on my own i dont even know how i make so much but ohh well god is great
Mechanics make money off parts as we get them for cheaper. We get parts for a lower price then charge the list price
Great video, I like the difference in styles between you and Scotty Kilmer. Scotty has a fast food style, but gets the point across
with his old school 40+ years experience. And we have Eric O. at +South Main Auto who is a perfectionist and very talented.
All three of you guys are excellent mechanics and a pleasure to watch. Thank you Eric.
Average, how many car you repair daily?
Netko treći that depends on the problems with the cars. some come for 2 or 3 jobs
excellent video Eric and Brian! Shows someone who is looking to get into the field what its like to run your own shop & the true frustrations a regular day can bring as you could see them start to set in! Ha! Really enjoyed it guys!
please do more of these videos it was awesome to watch. that is if you have time i love watching all the videos you post they are very good at helping out how to fix problems.
EricTheCarGuy you should definitely come out with some more videos like this. These videos are pretty interesting because you get to see and learn a little bit of everything that you fix that day in the video. Very interesting videos I think.
good man for purging the hose. I don't know if you were shining bright for the camera but you are an amazing mechanic and an amazing guy. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
PS. me and my friend look up to guys like you
Please do more of these! I've been subscribed since video 20, and have seen this channel flourish!
