  • Kicked Out!? Yes! We were told we coukd mot stay.
As full time travelers in our Grand Design fifth wheel, we have camped at private, city, state, county, and National parks. But this has been mostly in Florida and Canada. Our first time at a state park campground in New Hampshire was a brand new experience.
We were traveling from Florida to Maine on our way to Canada, making stops along the way at some RV Resorts and campgrounds. We found this beautiful State Park Campground in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee. We had a 7 night reservation, but stayed only 2 nights. We were told we have to leave about 20 minutes after we got there.

The point of the video is to always check to see all the rules and regulations before booking. It’s not just about dogs - this campground also does not allow tents, campsite fires or RVs that can’t hook up fully.
Based on some comments, I found links to other NE state parks with strict pet policies: Connecticut- portal.ct.gov/DEEP/State-Parks/Camping/Camping-Areas---CT-State-Parks-and-Forests#saltrock ; New York - thedyrt.com/magazine/local/campers-love-these-6-dog-friendly-campgrounds-in-new-york/ ; Maryland - dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Documents/MPSPetPolicy.pdf ; Pennsylvania - dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Documents/MPSPetPolicy.pdf ; New Jersey - www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/pet_friendly_camping.html
(and thank you for helping the channel- EVERY comment - the rude/ignorant/uncalled for- still helps the algorithm 😁)

Thank you so much. Unfortunately, many people left negative comments so we really appreciate someone seeing the message we were trying to convey.
Many northeast state park campgrounds are not pet friendly so we triple check now - the south is the opposite.
But really we wanted people to look at all the fine print - Ellacoya also doesn’t allow tents, campsite fires or RVs that can’t hook up fully? Very strange for a state park.
It’s a shame all websites don’t require you to click pet or not - the way you are required to put in RV length.
Again, it’s great to read a comment like yours 🤗

We were traveling through New England in 2019 and spent 7 days in New Hampshire on our return trip. Not only did we find that State Parks did not allow pets, we also found that many commercial parks either didn’t allow pets or charged extra if you had pets. We wound up staying at Danforth Bay campground which is about an hour from Ellacoya. Check it out next time. Pets were allowed and there were no extra charges.

Irresponsible dog owners ruin it for the rest of us. We were at a private park in AZ that borders BLM property. Separated by a three rail fence. People would actually climb through the fence for their dog to do it's business, and then not pick it up. Land mines everywhere.

My wife and I had a similar problem. It's so unfortunate, because I'm sure they were probably allowed at one point, but there's so many pet owners that don't have common courtesy for the next and ruin it for the rest of us. 25+ years ago dogs were prohibited in all Florida State Parks. I went to to head of the Division (I worked in the same headquarters) and told her how much money they were missing out from people not camping in state parks because of their stupid rule. After a lot of public input the rule was changed and the parks began to fill up. That is another reason FSP treats poop leavers and people who leave their dogs unattended so seriously. If people would do the right thing, we wouldn’t have stupid rules!

But sometimes you book quickly because you are just trying to find anyplace to go, and you can only hold it in your cart for 15 minutes. 15 min is not enough time to get it all done. Is the site big enough, is it close to our route, does it have hook ups, etc. Seeing if they take dogs just didn't occur to us. Thanks for the heads up in PA, we will be back in the fall. Larry

Preplanning is a must. Although I do not agree with the no pet policy, due to some specific instances, I understand it. My wife and I were walking our dogs at a State Park in TN. Suddenly, 3 dogs came charging out from a campsite and they were far from offering a friendly greeting. They were also extremely lucky that their owners were able to grab the long ropes they were attached to (but nothing on the other end) and pulled them back. One of my dogs was a huge Boxer (he can lay his head on the dining room table and he weighs in at 115 lbs.) and the other was an 85 lb. Choc. Lab. I assure you, the Boxer alone would have actually killed all three of their dogs. He's very protective of PaPa.
Another instance was at the same park. A large German Shepard was on a long lead rope (at least 30 ft.) and it charged out at an elderly couple walking by the campsite. I informed the Park Ranger and when he went to talk to the owners, the dog attacked him. They were forced to leave and banned from the park.
When some people fail to control their pets, or their pets are extremely dangerous towards others, it ruins it for all of us.

I have written hate mail to the state and have gotten very defensive answers back from them... anyway, I have never stayed at one, in spite of being a NH property tax payer!! Maine is more normal and has super state parks. So enjoy Maine. When you get to the coast, enjoy some lobster and steamers and cold beers!! I think your map shows you're crossing at Calais (pronounced like that rough spot on your skin)/St Stephen? That's where we always cross. The airline route is quite an interesting roller coaster. Mark used to drive tankers and big rigs across that back in the day. We watched Rankin and Strang's news conference earlier this week, I think NS is under a lot of pressure from the surrounding provinces. Mark is so anxious to get going, he's talking about the 18th, but I don't think NS will let us in until possibly end of June. I know, coming from a dog owner, this sounds weird but hear me out. There is nothing that I dislike more than hearing a dog barking all day and walking in dog’s poop. I’m a responsible dog owner. Just like I did with the children, I never leave my dog alone and I find a dog sitter every time I have to leave. If I can’t find a dog sitter, just like when I couldn’t find a baby sitter, I stay home with the dog. This way, it doesn’t bark all day unsupervised. I know that my opinion will not reach a majority of your followers but I feel that I am respectful, this way, of others. I wish you the best day ever. Love your channel.

I totally agree with you! I am a total dog lover and owner of six dogs, but I would never impose my dogs on people the way so many RV camp dog owners do. I’ve been staying in my RV off and on for four months and have someone taking care of my dogs and can’t believe how irresponsible some dog owners are. I was at one park where my neighbor tied their Husky outside of the trailer and the dog stands out there and howls all the time. I’ve seen dog owners letting their dogs go to the bathroom right by a no dog poo sign and leave it. Going for a walk I have walked in a ‘no children” area but it’s full of dogs and it’s like walking in a dog kennel. So it’s not ok to have children in an area because they’re too noisy but sure let your dogs be unruly and noisy. People leave their dogs in small pens outside of their trailers unattended and also barking at everything. If you went to the RV office to complain they would have to reprimand or kick so many people out! This is why it is necessary to have ‘no dog’ rules in so many parks now, it’s not the dogs, it’s the people who allow their dogs to be such a public nuisance.

It was a tenting trip and a first come first serve state park. So the plan was to get close the park and get a hotel Friday night. I couldn't for the life of me find a hotel that accepted dogs! I know that's not exactly the same situation but just as frustrating I'm sure! I hope you find Maine more dog friendly, as I'm sure you will! Welcome to Maine and happy camping!

This is surprising to hear. I love pets but I’m, sadly, highly allergic. We have a very hard time finding hotels that don’t allow pets. Soon, I don’t think it will be possible to find a hotel that doesn’t allow pets, anywhere. Even airlines now allow pets. If an allergic person has a problem with a pet being on a flight, the person with the allergies will have to schedule another flight, not the people with a pet. We live in strange times.

It's unfortunate but bad owners have caused this to be the case. We always had dogs until we retired and began RVing. It sickens me how many of these dogs that people just can't live without get left in the RVs all day by themselves barking and yelping. Every park that allows dogs states in their rules that barking dogs will not be tolerated yet these park owners and managers never want to do anything about violations.

This happened to us once while staying at Lamoine State Park in Downeast Maine! This dog was left in a tent all day and it was too hot inside and the dog barked constantly for about an hour! Finally we went to the rangers station and the Park Ranger went to the site and ended up taking the dog back to his residence which was located at the entrance gate and left a note for the owners!! That dog was so happy sitting in the rangers pickup truck and still had to wait a few more hours before the screwball owner’s returned

Unfortunately too many dog owners have ruined it for others and with the "pandemic dogs" it's even gotten worse. While we often pass through and usually stay a few nights in NH, have not run into the no dogs situation. We also have a seasonal site in the NY Adirondacks that we will be giving up after 15 years with the dog situation and inconsiderate owners letting them poop wherever and bark with no longer any control by the CG owners, My only advice to you - you have read the fine print better. If I owned an RV park, It would be NO PETS, For many reasons I do not travel with a pet, It's Not Fair to the Pet!!! (unless its 2 legged an can do dishes!! lol)(So many people think the leash laws an poop rules are for everyone, but them!!) Was in an RV park near Caldwell, Idaho, Was getting ready to break camp to leave when thru the window I could see the lady next door, standing in her RV doorway, holding a leash, I moved to see that she was letting her dog hike its leg an was peeing on MY truck tire!!! She just stood there watching her dog piss on my tire!!! I banged on the window, she quickly pulled her dog inside an shut the door!! I walked out by my truck, looked at the pee puddle, looked at her window's, a couple times... She got the message!! When I was checking out, I mentioned to the park manager what had happened, when I told him what space number, he got mad, said that's it!! She's out of here this morning!! She's not staying the rest of her reservation!! Jumped in his golf cart took off down the road... Have No idea what he did? If anything? Then there was the time in Seattle Wash. I called the park manager at 2:am, Told him, If he did not get that barking dog shut up, I was filling a dispute on my credit card against the park!! He kicked them out at 2:15am... Another time, near Sacto. Ca. pulled up to my assigned spot, got out to check things before backing in, found 3 big dog dumps, went back to the office, told them I wanted another spot an why!! No other spots left had 30amp hook up, manager had to clean it up before I'd take that spot!! He told me it had to be the people that were in the spot next to mine earlier that morning, because they had a couple big dogs!! Like everyone knows, a few ruin it for everyone else!!! Seams to be the biggest complaint is people not picking up after their pets, even cat owners!! Think more an more parks should go to NO Pets!!!!

Come out west. Dogs are never going to be an issue. I recommend Indian Campground in Buffalo, Wyoming. Huge trees with all day shade plus a short drive to the Bighorn Mountains. Buffalo is an awesome mountain town with all the amenities you need. Come one, come all..... !

Thanks for sharing. We have 3 pups, which we have found it difficult to find places to stay as 2 dogs seem to be the max, if allowed at all. Looks like we will have to avoid that area altogether. So sad. Annoys me that others have ruined it for those of us who do pickup after our pups and do not leave our pups alone to bark continuously. Our sticks and bricks house, which we are selling, has inconsiderate neighbors as well. It’s a beautiful neighborhood, except for those few.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents

One of the reasons I was ready to sell is because our neighbors the Hatfields had dogs that attacked my son and my dogs - they never stayed on their property.

Speaking of dogs, we stayed at a nice rv park once. The rv across from us decided to leave their dogs in the rv while they go out boating. Pretty soon, that rv was rocking back and forth and barking like you've never heard before. I watched one of the dogs rip the blinds down over the sink area. I can't imagine what that rv looked like after a couple hours of doggy mayhem lol.

Sounds like people new to RVing with dogs. I’m kind of glad their irresponsibility kicked them in the butt 😉
We spent a great deal of time training our dogs before we traveled full time with them.
It’s a shame bad dog owners ruin it for others. Just like bad campers in general ruin a camping trip 🤗

Dolly Copp Campground in Gorham, NH allows dogs. It’s the oldest and largest campground in the White Mountain National Forest and it’s only 30-45 minute drive from the Quebec border. I’ve camped at Camden State Park a few times, great place.

It was just surprising that a state park had these rules - like no tents, campsite fires or RVs that can’t hook up fully? So strange,

This is such an important video, I can see how easily this was missed, and honestly I hope it urges online booking sites to be more responsible. I too do just about everything on my cell phone. We are NOT the minority, our hand held technology makes it so convenient. Recently I was making a reservation thru the Texas Parks and Wildlife website and its interface for mobile was almost pathetic. There just is no excuse, travelers aren’t sitting at a static desk top computer with a 24” monitor.

Thank you for getting it. But it was there so they are covered.
Each state, each campground is so different. Since NH has dog and no dog campgrounds- it should be more clear.

Two signs at the entrance and a note on their website and you claim "how easily this was missed." You'd have to be blind to miss it. You're the dog owner. It's your responsibility - and your cellphone is not an excuse. It's one of the very first things we check.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents

@@robinstewart6510 that’s great. But many people don’t realize that state park campgrounds in the northeast are very restrictive.
And we weren’t making excuses. We were explaining.
And the whole point of the video was to show OUR MISTAKE and make sure others don’t do this.
This state “campground” also doesn’t allow tents, campsite fires or RVs that can’t hook up fully.
Sorry you missed that the point where I told Larry I messed up.
Also, if campgrounds put in the reservation system to click pet or not just like you have to input size of RV, this would solve this particular problem.
However, again, our point was don’t make our mistake - check ALL the fine print
