I absolutely love the fact that you've pointed out that they are not designed to really kill humans but something much more lethal "designed to kill something hell of a lot more tougher than a measly human" because they are practically over-engineered and higher up the food chain biologically wise.

@@danielfield650 Wonder if it was an allegory for communism. Russia and China are infamous for unskilled, untrained, peasant swarm tactics overseen by commanders who see it as a victory to kill one enemy for every hundred plus of their own troops lost.
(EDIT: Not sure if Russia is still like that today as I believe their front-line units field modern equipment...at least initially. Modernized T-90+, 5.45 automatics, Gen 4+ fighters. With China, though, I think any large-scale conflict would involve T-34s for armored regiments and SKS for their troops. 2% modern stuff, 98% Korean war era equipment. @Junior Read I would agree except for one thing: there is no reason why they can't be both intelligent AND have dumb drones be fighters. If you remember in the movie, the brain bugs were highly intelligent. They understood concepts of feigning weakness (not revealing their anti-orbital capabilities) and using false intelligence (mind controlling a radio operator to call in for reinforcements to a base so that those reinforcement could be wiped out) and nuclear weapons. The bugs in the movie are not dumb bugs, the FIGHTER DRONES are dumb bugs. This fits perfectly with a society that is meant to represent communists as per Heinlein's intent: a few despotic intelligent leaders sending hordes of the mindless to their death "for the greater good".

    • @Aliksander54

@Junior Read Can you explain to me how being able to successfully lob an asteroid across interstellar distances at relatively massive speed toward your enemies home planet, which needs to account for stellar movement, gravitation, vector forces, etc on a massive scale, constitutes 'animal intelligence'?
And who says the warrior bugs take massive resources? You assume because they are large they must be hard to produce, but that's nonsense. It doesn't even hold true on our own planet let alone on alien worlds where different environmental and biological variations could exist that could make it significantly easier. The same way your ALL CAPS doesn't make your words any smarter, making the warrior bugs larger, fiercer, and more expendable doesn't make the concept of their species non-sensical.

That wouldn't really be in the hiveminds best interest. For the Hivemind it all essentially comes down to a cost-benefit analysis. And for any warrior bug they create they can create something like a hundred gaunts. And the hundred gaunts gain them a net bigger power than the one warrior bug. At least against regular Imperial guard equivalent enemies. Yes, warrior bugs would rip through imperial guard like through paper, but they'd expend much more energy for that then a hundred gaunts would. Also, every single warrior bug killed means a much bigger investment was destroyed. Even a hundred gaunts killed does not equate to a single warior bug killed in terms of lost investment.
Now against enemies like Space marines, yes, against those the warrior bug is way more efficient in terms of cost-benefit than simple gaunts. A Space maine can easily kill hundreds of gaunts without even breaking a sweat and the gaunts weapons are just not that effective against Space marines. But then again, the only reason the hivemind would even bother to throw gaunts at space marines is to stall for time to get a bigger bioform in position or if nothing else is available on short notice.
You also shouldn't forget that the warrior bug just wouldn't be as effective in 40k as in starship troopers because the 40k Universe has much more powerful weapons and enemies. Bolters come to mind. Or the Orks. The Orks would absolutly LOVE the warrior bugs. They are essentially all they ever want from an enemy. They are virtually limitless in numbers, each and every one of them is fucking awsome at fighting, they prefer to fight at close range and they are filled with spiky bits that make excellent trophies and/or improvised weapons.

The vastly superior book described them as differently to what's on that cover: Bipedal, hulking, giant tarantula-like monstrosities, capable of using technology - used spaceships and ranged weapons. They made serious inroads in forcing the Federation back, initially, before human forces could start getting traction in the opposite direction. They were essentially an analogy for how Nazi Germany/Imperial Japanese steamed forth before allied forces could properly deal with them.
The versions in the books effectively WERE Tyranids. No idea why those artistic portrayals were as goofy as they were.
The ones in the (idiotic, frankly) film 'adaptation' would have been ridiculously ineffective. Wiped out with artillery, orbital bombardment and air strikes with ease. If the Federation had been depicted half-way realistically, they wouldn't have even been even an annoyance. They literally have to get in point-blank range before they can even try to do anything.
It never made much sense, either, how they're able to even shoot those spore pod things over the massive distances required to get between planets. They were at very low sub-light speeds. Even if not able to track them, it would take decades, perhaps centuries, before they got anywhere near somewhere useful.
Almost certainly highly vulnerable to chemical weapons, too. Definitely incendiaries. Could easily lure them in through scent or auditory cues into things like pits of viscous, sticky liquid, to entrap and set them alight. They want to crawl over their trapped brethren? Good! More of them just get set alight!
You wouldn't need futuristic hardware to deal with them. Even early 20th century militaries could do it, so long as they knew what they are facing.
The ones from the book? Not so much... Those were a LOT more difficult to deal with.

If you haven't checked it out Heinlein wrote a book called "The Past Thru Tomorrow" commonly referred to as "The Future History Series" It is a collection of essays about how RAH thought the next couple of hundred years would play out. So far he is batting about .750. Robert Anson Heinlein was quite a character in real life, his personality was as large and boisterous as his characters tended to be.
He wrote a lot. At one point before the science fiction took off(sorry) he was writing tons of magazine copy. He was definitely writing 90% of what was published in "Boys Life" the official magazine of the boy scouts of America while also writing about half of the written form pornography that was sold in barbershops at the time. Condoms(AKA:Merry Widows) and porn were sold out of the back room of barber shops and that is why women were only aloud in barbershops on saturday mornings if they were taking their sons for a hair cut.
While all of the above was going on he lived in a nudist colony in California and at the time of his death had married three very attractive red headed women and divorced two of them. Despite the divorces they remained in his life as friends and stayed at the same colony.

Considering the main arachnoid force are quadrupedal berserkers the answer is quite simple.
For defensive applications the of proximity mines around areas of strategic importance. Considering their entomology this would be of prime importance as their nerve stem and likbs will be most vulnerable to this form of attack.
For offensive applications high explosive munitions (for your consideration a 40mm rotary grenade launcher) seems as though it would be more effective for infantry units.
This in addition to mine placement prior to large scale infantry engagement would be invaluable for corralling enemy forces and the establishment of choke points.
As much as I love Starship Troopers the ineffectiveness of the MI (in the films) use tactics more suited for conventional terrestrial warfare than the asymmetric war they are actually engaged in.

The worlds that the Arachnids inhabit all seem very arid and I have to imagine the food and water requirements for even a single warrior bug, much less trillions must be fairly significant, and they don't seem to follow the model of the Tyranids. My guess is Arachnid hives must be somewhat like African Termite mounds where farming all take place in the deeper levels, which given their size could be miles underground. Not exactly practical for strategic planners trying to root out Arachnid hives, but it would at least give a good idea how to ensure they are really gone for good.

There was a tabletop war game that came out a few years later, too, with standard cap troopers using the powered suits from the show. The rule book for it mentioned that some backwater colonies were so resource-poor that their local militias (they couldn't afford to maintain the higher-tech gear used by garrisons of _real_ MI troopers) had to make do with just body armor and helmets for defense - and, hilariously, showed an illustration of troops in the movie-style battle rattle.

When you were talking about the design origins for the movie, and comparing to the books. you probably should have gone a bit into Starcraft, and Tyranids.
What DID Tyranid art look like pre-1996?
ST the movie, was filmed in april 1996-oct 1996. released in 1997.
Starcraft was first shown in 1996 E3. (orcs in space version.) pulled, and massive retooling, to beta, and release in 1998. which begs the question, did Starship troopers designers see that E3? did it impact them? it was so rough, I kindof doubt it. But, then the other way, Starcraft later designs almost certainly did see Starshiptroopers, and were influenced..
I only know what Tyranid look like now. not what they would have looked like back then. can we pin point any influence?

@@collinfulling3223 of course. but the question is, what exactly did Tyranids look like in the 70's-90's? They would have been just words, artist drawings, or models at that point. Starship troopers itself is going to be the first high detail CGI model in action of bugs. (Alien of course as well must get a mention.) then starcraft also not as high detail as ST, but certainly more then anything Games workshop was doing. To say "Starcraft was supposed to be 40k" ignores the fact, Tyranid design has evolved over time, the same way Arch was talking about the changes in design for the Bugs from book to movie. so, how much has the design changed, how much have they all influenced each other?

All a warrior bug needs to do to climb a mount of its dead siblings is to slot both its forelegs into a hole each, sink them relatively gently as deep as they will go, its basically a bundle of sticks so the long thin limb will not move sideways, do the same with the rear legs, extract the front legs and repeat the proces further up, etc.
