Rachmaninov truly does reach the parts other composers fail to reach. He was a painter of sound who understood his palette better than most. Chopin's influence is obvious as a pianist, orchestrally he aspired to Tchaikovsky, but it is Rimsky-Korsakov's instruction which really shines through in his arrangements. The sheer depth of feeling, even in Rachmaninov's more austere moments, defies analysis.

@Mazzel Tov it isn't a contest. :D Ravel and Rachmaninov were both highly skilled orchestrators. You forgot Boulanger.

It's insane but Rach understood me more than I understand myself...
Most of his pieces are full of burning passions, sad yearnings, loneliness, and there is always some strange dark mystery...
I have never listened deeper music...

I made an effort to find all of Rachmaninoff's piano music a few months ago. I've listened to all of his Preludes, all of his Études-Tableaux, his Suites No. 1 and 2, his Morceaux de fantaisie, his Moments Musicaux and a few other stand-alone pieces. I knew I still had to listen to his Morceaux de salon and a few other pieces, but somehow I managed to miss this suite entirely! For some reason, in years of listening to his music, this is the first I have heard of this suite-when UA-cam recommended it to me just now.

This introduction sounds very similar to Freddie Mercury's Rachmaninov's Revenge, but that was in 1988, way before 2002 when this piece was found. Is it just a coincidence?
