i agree washed out baits have less inherent attraction, but it makes sense that fish will find them more acceptable, because they'll have picked up more safe washed out baits left behind by other anglers, and be more likely to throw caution to the wind. They're probably more of an edge when fish have been pressured and are more finicky.
