Restoring a Ford Mustang Novelty Vintage Watch with a Very Strange Issue

- Marshall restores another vintage watch! This time it's a quirky novelty watch based on a Ford Mustang steering wheel. These watches have a lot of character and are a lot of fun, but they used low grade movements in them which make them very difficult to restore. Marshall has to find out why the watch hands spin freely, and then get the thing serviced. It's quite an adventure!

I love the fact that you are not a snob and see value in watches of all types, styles and price. I have heard many people say that if they were allowed to keep only one watch, it would have to be Dads watch. The brand, its price, its collectability etc.. become meaningless.
Me too, a red ‘66 convertible. I want one of these.
it's not an issue of being a "snob". this particular watch is so crap you might have gotten it in a cracker jack box. it isn't a subjective difference, it literally IS crap. It was never meant to even be worn AS a watch, hence why it is a "novelty" watch. you're projecting way too much emotion here.
DOWN WITH THE RICH.
I’m rich and I’m not going down
@@brucethomas5123 All the rich are going down soon, when America collapses everyone collapses.
14:50 i love Marshall's commentary "you see that post right there, thats not there". The commentary is just so comforting and relaxing lol
Marshal, you inspired me to "do watches" I got all the necessary gear, watched and finished the course of your guru too. Started with pocket watches, serviced a good few of these, now I'm starting on proper wrist watches. Excellent hobby, it allows you to be in the moment, experience the now, very much so tai-chi. Once again, a big thank you!
Lol I've done the exact same thing, I also find it to be a very zen-inducing hobby. A true exercise of patience
Where did you take the course??
What course did you watch?
There’s a guy named Mark Lovick that has the lessons online, his UA-cam channel was “watch repair channel” very good in depth videos
@@darylcav6285 Thanks
Just heard Adam Savage from Mythbusters say "This isn't Wristwatch Revival, and I'm no Marshall" while showing off his watches. That's gotta feel nice man! Great Work!
This has to be one of my favorite Wristwatch Revivals. The novelty of the watch, along with the father-son connection, just makes this such a rich episode. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Nice to see you doing novelty watches that were probibally never meant to be serviced, I will never get tired of watching these videos.
Oh no way! I have a watch identical to this one from my late grandfather's collection, but with a Renault dial. I'll definitely keep this video saved somewhere in the off-chance that I get into watch restoration to fix it!
It’s a great morning when I wake up to find a fresh Wristwatch Revival video dropped. 😅
I would have investigated substituting a jewel for that final metal plate under the shock spring.
Marshall - I am amazed how steady your hands are. Like many others, I have essential tremor. My hobby and therapy is electronics. Soldering can be very fine work, but I can rest the tip of the soldering iron against the joint to be soldered. The solder mask on the circuit board and the surface tension of the molten solder tend to keep the solder in the right place. I find after a few hours of soldering, my tremor is much improved. And after watching you work on a watch, my mental health is much improved. Thank you.
Marshall, thanks for working on watches that aren't all 'highbrow'. Some of the items I've seen you work on fall into the category of 'fun'. This is definitely a 'fun' watch.
😎
this watch is literal junk. it isn't even meant to be worn. really.
@@thomasneal9291It's meant to be cool, and it does exactly what it set out to do.
@@thomasneal9291 You must be a gas at parties.
To me, it's more rare than any Rolex .
@@thomasneal9291 Are you always so upbeat? Marshall says numerous times it's just a novelty watch.
It might have been pointed out here already but Old England were a brand of the UK watch maker Accurist in the late 60's. Their watches were an odd combination of heavy brass cases, odd dial colours such as green and orange, coloured plastic straps and roman numerals, very much a product of the 'swinging London' era. They had low-end Swiss movements such as this EB or Standard (ST). They also made watches that hung on your belt - these were almost pocket watch size of course - and as far as I can tell they were entirely unisex. Other names such as "A Go Go'" and "Piccadilly" also appeared but they were made by the same people. They are collectable, especially over here, and becomnig accordingly rare.
They also made the Beatles Apple Watch, which is definitely collectible. Got one coming to my bench soon
A watch dedicated to my favorite car being repaired by my favorite watchmaker. AWESOME!
I cant believe you found a part for that movement!!!!
I love that this was not Yet Another Many-Jeweled watch from a Swiss watchmaker who went out of business in the 1960s. Nice! Cheap, cheerful, fun, engaging video. Keep it up!
YOU are the Bob Ross of watches!
I have NO interest in watch repair... but I just discovered you 3 hours ago, and I've been watching your channel ever since! Just... fascinating, positive and ...strangely calming.
Well... Bob Ross was unconventional as an artist and his painting style consisted of shortcuts that simulated more dedicated artist's work. Marshall may not be a master (yet), but his work is excellent and uses conventional and accepted practices and tools. But I get the homespun flavor of Marshall's presentation compared to Bob's.
How is Marshall and bob even remotely comparable?
@@poopy_fingers3324Maybe that he makes a skill accessible and relatable to the general public like Bob did?
@@poopy_fingers3324 They both have soothing voices, how's that? Both are nice people. I know I should speak of Bob Ross in the past tense, but I'm stating how they compare. You, on the other hand, have poopy fingers that are kind of gross if you ask me.
@@coldblue9mm their voices are NOTHING alike. Bob Ross definitely has a very calm, soothing voice. Marshall 100% does not.
Nice video! Sweet to hear the happiness in your voice when the watch was restored, and the simple joy it gives you because it reminds you of your dad. Truly priceless!
HVAC tech here. I really like watching you explain what you’re doing while you’re doing it. I think you sold me on getting into watches. Headed to your website to check it out. Thank you!!
20:02 I'm always amazed at how you manage scenes like this without wobbling too much 😃 Not a fan of pin pallet movements but the watch has something special, great work ☺
As soon as I saw the hands spinning I knew that fork was toast! 😂 I’ve worked on a few super cool watches with these dollar watch/pin movements and some are very cool and run very well and they usually go very cheap because they’re less desirable. Nice work as always!
Yeah, surprised he said he never saw that before. Common symptom of that problem.
Marshall, I wanna say that I really hope you keep hold of this watch. Not for any monetary value, but because it clearly reminds you of your father so much, even if it wasn't ever something that belonged to him.
Great job on the restoration, it's fun to see novelty watches back in a running condition.
I was going to say the exact same thing. Sometimes something super simple can mean a lot to someone.
And like Marshall stated, his Dad would have gotten a kick out of it!
I loved it when you put it on the timegrapher, got a total blizzard then said the magic words " that will do"
Always fun to see and hear you work, Marshall, and a great novelty watch distraction! What about the mainspring?
I was waiting for Marshall to take apart the barrel and main spring or at least comment on why he didn't.
Same question here. I can't recall another restoration where you did not open the barrel and check the mainspring. Why not on this watch?
Same here
Me too, I thought it odd he never looked at the mainspring.
Mustang owner here! Thank you for the awesome video!!
question for you, wouldn't you want one of these but with the watch movement upgraded & the outside gold plated, or silver plated? ...I never heard of a one jeweled watch before.
Such a joy to listen to a man and his craft, enjoying the little things in life, in this case very little things. It's more or less a worthless watch but just ordering a fork for the hell of it just to see how far things can go is very satisfying. And getting results as well!! It's working again. I'm not a watch repairman but I kind of expected to fork to be the culprit. The running gear was working but couldn't stop and keep time due to the fork missing in action. I hope to see more discoveries like this.
All the best from me, All the way in the Netherlands.
This is where the enthusiast shines. Most professionals would not afford so much time on a souvenir. And who knows when such arcane knowledge will come in handy elsewhere? Well done!
Always a pleasure watching you work. I am a clockmaker turned watchmaker. You should try a Westminster chime clock rebuild. 3 barrels, 3 complicated trains with springs and levers a bottom plate and a top plate. It will teach you new innovative ways to use profanity 😂😂😂
That was totally enjoyable!!!!! Thank you for a pleasant 33:33 minutes. I wish could always be like this!!!!
Another amazing restoration! I am so glad it brings back great memories of your dad. Well worth the time and effort!
As a tradie that loves learning, your constant attention to detail and learning is admirable, well done mate. Wish I could do what you can do
I love how the dial says "swiss made", like someone looking at that in the 60s-70s would go "oh yes, this is a quality watch" when it was probably made in Switzerland as they made basically every watch movement at that point. It's super cool though.
Such Fun! I really enjoyed seeing you restore this novelty watch. I'm sure it would definitely be a desirable acquisition for Mustang fans in the US. 😊
It is always a pleasure to come along with you on these projects, the love and passion you have for this 'hobby' is infectious. Thank you for the extra time and effort to make this content accessible and entertaining!😊
I have been "hooked" on watching your restorations for a while now. Learn a bit new information for every video I watch. Educational and entertaining at the same time.
Thanks 🇸🇪
Hi Marshall may I say this is one of the best restoration videos you have done . As it's the sort of watch that most of us would not be afraid to work on. I've seen many watches at cheap prices but thought to myself what if it breaks I'll ruin it. But something like that watch I would have a go at. Please do more like this. Best watch channel on UA-cam.
Nice breath of fresh air!! Different watch, different internals, and a great example of revitalizing something of interest. Also another option, with warnings, to consider for people considering getting into the hobby, of lower end watches that may be more accessible to attempt. I know tons of older Mustang fans who have and drive their toys who would trip over themselves, and remove a high end Rolex, to have this working watch to wear during their shows and outings.
I love your channel and the restoration walkthroughs are so relaxing. It reminds me of how I felt watching Bob Ross paint as a kid. Like meditation for the soul.
Love your channel Marshal. I used to be a watchmaker/clockmaker professionally until the 1990s when I changed direction and left it behind to be a computer programmer. Watching you restore these watches reminded me of my love for horology and I have recently started doing both watches and clocks as a way to unwind after work. Thank you so much for these videos.
This watch taught me why we need multiple bridges. Thank you sir.
A lot of early watches worked this way. Split three-quarter plate was very nice when it first came out. It allowed to watch simultaneously to be both thinner and easier to service. It was quite a dramatic change
I have been watching this channel for a while. It's like therapy to watch the precision and care taken with the soft reassuring voice. I have had 5 Mustangs and have never seen this watch. I liked this video quite a lot. If the watch goes for sale, I would love to bid on it. Thank you for producing the channel and I wish you continued success.
What a fun restoration project. Second tiniest movement I have seen in your channel. So cool. Also glad that you had such a beautiful and awesome memory connection to your late father while restoring it. Love the video, thanks for making it!
Nice one! Great to see you taking the same care on a cheap pin lever movement as you do on the pricey stuff.
Metal to metal contacts everywhere, so you must have used a lot of lube.
Would have liked to see the barrel in bits.
After restoring that watch, it actually looks more elegant and sophisticated. Awesome job 👍👍👍
Excellent work in the bent wheel!! That and the excellent luck finding the pallet pin part!
I almost always feel a bit more cheerful during and after a viewing of these videos, and this one was no exception. A fun and surprisingly attractive novelty watch carefully restored. Glad to see it.
Thank you for taking me along on the ride.
A true gem of a channel on UA-cam.
SUPER COOL Restoration!!! I am a Watch & Car Guy and owner of 2 Mustangs I really Enjoyed this vid. I imagine you will keep this one and Smile alot while wearing it especially at a Car show or cars and coffee morning..!! Cheers👍👍👍
This is beautiful! The rally strap is a perfect match. The only small glitch is that you can just see the ends of the strap peeking out past the rim of the steering wheel. You might be able to get a similar strap with curved ends so the ends of the strap will be completely hidden behind the steering wheel.
Serviced my dad’s really old stop watch from the 70’s with one of these movements…was my first….boy did I learn a few things lol…column wheel was the Bain of my life for a few days..had to keep walking away for a few lol..great video thank you
Marshall, I actually started learning with these types of movements and then progressed to the more complicated ones. Aligning the pivots really tests your patience when there are no jewels, as you mentioned. What makes it even more complicated is keeping the movement in the same spot and in focus, since your cameras are rolling and you don't want to miss the moment everything clicks into place. I also find it very hard to regulate these movements. I can never get them to have a stable rate, and they are sometimes running a little fast or a little slow. Thank you for yet another great video!
I’m not really a person who wears watches but I find it amazing how they actually work. I found your channel and after binging a ton of your video I thought this is something I want to try. So I ordered some watchmaking tools and I’m going to give it a go. Now All I need are inexpensive watches under $30 to practice on
I love watching you fix watches
Thanks for repairing this novelty watch. I enjoyed your connection to Mustangs. I showed my wife the finished pictures as her first car was a 64-1/2 Mustang and she thought it was cool too.
Gosh! I want a watch like that. I can wear expensive watches and hardly anyone notices but I can wear fun ones and people love them.
Marshall you are awesome! I love your videos! Your not snooty, and brillliant! I watch you all the time! Thanks bud!
How does that Main Spring work, I noticed you did not disassemble it. And I saw something in the beginning that said Nonadjustable? Love your videos, I am 'Legally Blind" so this would be a little tricky, and if I lost a spring, forget about it, I ran my own business for near 30 years and it is nice to see someone with such a passion for your hobby, your job, your commitment to quality and your 'sticktoedness'. And like I saw in a comment below, that your not a snob and actually have fun with what you do, 'Shout Out' to you as I had a '66' and a '69' and a stack of tickets to boot. Great job!
Hey Marshall - you have a very soothing voice! I play your revival videos for my 2 rescue Goldendoodles when I have to leave the house. Very helpful. Your videos are also fun to watch - keep up the good work, sir!
First off may I say you really nailed that re-truing of the gear! The first watch I ever owned my parents bought for me when I was in grade school in the '70s. It was a pin pallet watch. It is a faux chronograph. I actually still own it. And it still runs. I have to say though, it is LOUD. You really know you are wearing it.
You got me hooked into this. I've just pulled my first movement apart that wasn't running. It's a Westclox Pocket Ben with no jewel's at all. On a number of the wheels, you can actually push the pivot through the wheel. It's running again but still has a few issues that I will hopefully take care of as soon as my demagnetizer arrives as I know there are a number of pieces that are effected and it's a bit all over the place with keeping time.
Love your vids by the way, quite engaging, educating and informative for the novice.
I'm just watching this with my morning coffee. New sub, not sure why I enjoy this so much
My dad is a mustang guy as well! I’m a watch guy! I really want to move from just assembling pieces I buy offline to what you are doing here.
Thank you for this. Subbed.
I would love to see a series where you take a novelty watch like this and put a legitimate movement behind the dial and re-lume the hands. Call the series "Unnecessary Horology"!
Man I’ve thought about this as well, i have the Ferrari version of this watch and I have a 70s sabb corporate watch prize with the most crap movement ever seen! And a gorgeous xo retro Ferrari 250 gt dna watch with a basic quartz movement in it, but the case is cavernous so I could put in an eta mechanical movement in it or such!
Great old watch ! Fun. Great job bringing it back to life !
Really cool. Cars and watches go together! Great video.
Well done!! It just goes to show that every watch deserves a second chance at life
This are the perfect watch for someone that loves cars, horses and watches
As a watch fan and mustang fanatic I need one of these !!!
question for you, wouldn't you want one of these but with the watch movement upgraded & the outside gold plated, or silver plated? ...I never heard of a one jeweled watch before.
Another great job. it is my hobby as well, though I am a rookie, last year I did work on a Disney watch from a friend of mine, and it was a huge lesson journey.
There's something to be said for hobbies that make you smile. I wish I could get into this.
Dude! That wheel truing was boss! 😯
As a classic mustang owner, this watch is too cool! Love all your vids...videos.... ty!
😂 Of course, the super-fast movement at the beginning. Ford is simply extremely fast and at least faster than time. I'm super excited to see how the error can be rectified.
Last but not least, thank you as always for your great videos. All the best and thank you.
What a cool watch! And you did your usual thorough job.
Super sweet restoration. Great job and video.
I think that's a very handsome watch. Thanks for making it run again. I'd be proud to own that watch. I bet it'll get lots of positive comments when it's worn.
I have my Grandfather's Wesclox Scotty pocket watch from the 1960s. It does run. I have it in a globe and wind it say every month or so just to work it a bit. They were the working man's watch of the day. I have mine from the 1970s that I had in the military. They were not expensive, but are my most prized possessions. I appreciate your passion.
I almost bought one of those about 6 months ago. It vanished just before i could get to it. I was super excited when i saw your thumbnail with that mustang watch in it!
This is definitely a watch that’s going on my wishlist as a Mustang enthusiast haha
Love the care given to a cheap watch. You did the watchmaker's equivalent of working a day at your local soup kitchen. Your Dad would be proud.
What a GREAT little novelty Watch...thanks for the video..😊
Great work on truing the wheel, and what a cool watch!
I have the exact same watch but it’s for a corvette! Mine was running but recently stopped. I’ll be watching closely! Thanks!
A surprisingly satisfying resto - great!
Marshal, love your work! Please let us hear the ticking when the balance comes to life in your videos. I think the folks would love that ❤
That's a super cool watch. You didn't mention that the trouble you were having with the getting the pivots set was because the wheels weren't in correctly and that the center wheel pivot was keeping the bridge from dropping down low enough to engage the others. Once you reversed that (2nd wheel on top of center wheel), it all went together. Great work.
Good to see you working on a pin pallet movement because there are a lot of watches that use this movement especially jump hour watches, they are cheaply made but it's good to see the problems they can have. Cheers Wristwatch Revival
That's a sick watch. I wish I hadn't seen this, now unfortunately I have to scour the Internet until I find one
Love to watch your programs here in the UK
It turned out great, thx for sharing
I love your professionalism, Marshall. It's a low quality watch but you give it the same care and attention as a Rolex. I'm still amazed by the precision of all mechanical watches, even novelty ones like this.
I am absolutely addicted to your videos!
This was super helpful. I'm slowly becoming a (reluctant) expert in servicing the throw-away Timex M116 movement used in the 1980's.
31:21 The FIRST and probably ONLY time you will ever hear Marshall say "at least 'technically' running?!" It takes a wise man to know when to call it real!
I imagine you must have one heck of a watch collection by now. You should do a video of it with a commentary of the history of each.
You are now the leading world expert in this type of watch.
Great little watch, you had me on the edge of the seat with the repair 😊😊
Nice job Marshall. This was so fun, You rock
I love it. That watch is unique indeed. Top-notch entertaining to watch this.
Love that you did this. What a great video! Rather than a checkered flag motif for the bezel, I am thinking it's more a chronograph concept 'cause they're working on those lap times! Cheers
It's nice to see you working on a cheaper watch, like I might be able to afford, I always think I would like to repair watches when I watch your videos.
