    I got sick & tired of cleaning my shower trap so have decided to rip it out & replace with a bath tub or install a high rise shower tray - only IF I can use a shallow/regular P trap on it instead of these poxy shower bottle traps.

    Excellent (though unavoidably a bit stomach churning!!) description of how to clear a shower drain of hair etc, but even after that my shower tray still I think rather slow and as it’s shallow I often get a little spillage outside. What can I use to clear the area and pipes below?

    • @christurner6430

      I would use a drain cleaner (a 'drain blaster' device) that uses a plunger to drive lots of water rapidly down a drain pipe. Fill the drain to back up as much as possible (i.e. keep the shower water running fast) and then blast the drain line by quickly locating the blaster on the drain inlet at the shower tray and operating the plunger! Probably hair or even builder's debris in the line. Repeat as necessary.

    Good and clear video Charlie. The only extra step I do with ours is to give it a final few plunges with one of those super-size plastic hand plungers that sort of concertinas down as you press it. Given they don't have any rubber seal or anything (just plastic throughout) their suction power is phenomenal. I find it helps pull up a load of dirt from further down the waste pipe which i can then just wipe up with some kitchen roll.

    Hi, a very helpful video. I noticed that when you took your odour trap out, the water level was below the outlet pipe, is that where it should be or can it be above the pipe? I have a fairly new shower and it has already blocked up. Can soap gunk from a washbasin affect the shower drain? Thank you, in anticipation of your help.

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  4 роки тому

      Hi Sheila, the water level would be below when you take the odour trap out, but that's the job of the odour trap - to keep the internal water level above the outlet pipe. It's difficult to say without knowing the exact configuration of your pipes. It could be a number of things, like there not being a big enough fall on the pipe leading to excessive build up of gunk but you could get an old fashioned plunger and see if you can plunge the shower trap to release the blockage. You could also try one of these bit.ly/2Sv3bBn It's a good idea toregularly clean the wash basin and shower trap, to prevent the gunk that forms quite quickly from travelling further down the pipes to areas that are less easy for you to clean.

    • @sheilawilliams2880
      @sheilawilliams2880 4 роки тому

      @@CharlieDIYte Hi Charlie, thanks very much for the information. I had plunged it and had small bits of gunk out, but I shall make it a routine to clean both out regularly. Thanks

  • @ksumar
    @ksumar 5 років тому +2

    Useful tip. If you take all the gunge, no need to disassemble, and simply hold in whilst flushing in a clean toilet the water jet will remove most of it.

    Hi Charlie, any tips on how to access the pipework under/behind the shower to check for blockages ? My shower is still backing up even though I've thoroughly cleaned the easy-to-reach bits as in your helpful clip. I've tried HG drain unblocker and a good old fashioned hand suction pump but no luck. I think there's a blockage in the waste pipe but stumped as to how to access it without taking part of the shower apart. Thanks Jonathan

      Maybe try something like this amzn.to/3vsf7qP I haven't used one myself but I've heard a lot of people say it did the trick.

      I bought an auger and it worked go on UA-cam for advice on using. Takes a wee while but it should clear the blockage.

      It sounds like you might have a blockage further down the drain. You might buy a plunger and see if that clears it 🤔

  • @catgreenwood9845

    This drain has the stupidest design ever. Why would it require so much hassle to remove hair? Can't even put a hair trap or whatever to prevent hair getting in. I just moved to a new house and this is the exact drain! I hate this drain.
    Ps. Thanks for the video though

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 роки тому

      The thing is Cat, it's not the drain but the hair that's the problem. You have to look at what it's catching and be grateful that it's preventing all that hair going further down the drain where it could cause a serious blockage. I actually think it's quite a clever design. A hair trap that was easy to clean wouldn't be effective in catching the hair in the first place.

    • @catgreenwood9845
      @catgreenwood9845 3 роки тому

      @@CharlieDIYte I understand the hair trap mechanism. I used to have all sort of other hair trap drains and this one makes removing the hair troublesome and gross. Now I have to switch to another device which is flat and have small holes on it and my hair just gather together which is really easy to pick up and dump into bin after a shower.
      Yeah this design is better than just a hole with nothing to catch hair I agree with that.

      @@CharlieDIYte btw sorry if I sounded too negative! Your video is actually very help for people who has that drain and want to clean it. It's not you or the video but the drain is the problem!😂 For those who have long hair and molt often, don't get that drain!

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  7 років тому

      Almas Asif Sorry about that! I would suggest you clean it regularly - every few months to keep it clear and prevent the hair and other gunk going further into the drain where is harder to clear.

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  6 років тому +1

      Lauren Shaw You need to do it often unfortunately! 🙄 Probably every few months, but you'll know when it needs doing because the water starts backing up in the shower tray. Best to do it before that happens though so that you don't get any blockages further down the pipe, that you can't get to.

    Hi I have a shower very similar to this. I removed the drain cover and the shower tray waste trap simmilar to how you have done on this video to clean everything. I then clean the rest of the shower and and turned the shower on before resembling everything to get rid of cleaning soloitiob and soap suds. The next thing I knew the water started leaking out of the ceiling in the room below. Is this just because the shower waste cup wasn’t back in? I’m calling a plumber asap x

    Is there anything that can be added to the drain to help keep the hair from getting sucked down in the first place? With normal tub / sink type drains there is a plastic mesh that I put over the hold that kept the worse out but not sure how to do the equivalent with this type of drain in the new house I’ve move into. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

    I've never tried to properly clean the entirety of the system before. I just removed some hairs from the white cylinder and called it a day, without realising the hair trap was clogged. Now I understand why my shower keeps smelling and can't seem to stay unclogged for more than a week!

    Never knew you could unscrew that part. I'll be adding a screwdriver to my cleaning bag. Vinegars.great but I never use because the smell isn't pleasant! The trying to clean it without unscrewing that makes it hard so knowing how to take apart you can use another product.
    I still think they could come up with a better design. I clean people's everyweek any many of them stink 7 days later however thoroughly cleaned and with whatever product cleaned with (tried them all). Only thing that helps somewhat is taking removable part out after every use and sitting it on shower floor.

    It's a bitch to unscrew. I swear the plumber must have glue it.

      Put 1/3 cup bicarb down the drain. Pour in 1/3 cup white vinegar. It will fizz. Leave until your next shower. The water from your shower will drain away the bicarb/vinegar sitting in the bottom of the pipe. Things should now smell very fresh. If not, it means thee is still a build up of waste in the pipe. Repeat the bicarb/vinegar after the last daily shower and within the week you should have a nice smelling bathroom.for an hour or until your next shower.

      It's plastic not chrome, but not really as there's nothing in the shower that's going to scratch it.

    I have the same design of drain but a little different fitting. The difference is that there’s not any screw that locks the plastic with the silver tape, so when I pull the silver tape it doesn’t opens correctly and It’s like stuck in the bathtub the plastics. Any idea about this ?
