    Good video - thank you. Two questions on the Westerbeke: 1st, I noticed you didn't attempt to position the vanes on the new impeller in the direction of rotation. I have always made sure they are properly aligned. Am I wasting my time doing this and should I simply push in the new impeller the way you did without reference to which way the vanes were twisted? 2nd, I noticed you did not clean out the heat exchanger. It seems that would have been a good idea since a vane was missing from the impeller? Thank you.

      Both good questions. The vines don't matter because as soon as it starts spinning they will correct themselves. Unless it has an issue after the new impeller goes in I usually don't bother. I have only found pieces stuck once or twice in the 100s I have replaced. They seem to get flushed out or ground up so you never find them. Thanks for watching.

      @@JustinLeeMarine Thank you for the reply. Every time I replace an impeller I always ask myself why I’m trying to align the blades because they would naturally turn away from the direction of rotation. That brings up another question. Why lube the impeller for first start up? My boat sometimes sits for a month on the lift between uses. When I start the engine the impeller will be dry. What is the difference?

    • @JustinLeeMarine
      @JustinLeeMarine  2 роки тому

      The lube is just so it is easier to get the impeller into the housing. As long as you have a good water flow to the water pump it will get plenty of water in time not to damage the blades. You could prime the system if you wanted to make sure after it sits for an extended period of time.

    The oil filter location is obviously so it doesn’t make a mess. It will make a mess removing it from its location on the engine.

    A tool roll with a set of ratchet head wrenches is really nice for nuts and bolts....even in tight places.
    The adjustable wrench....? Not my choice.

    I’m really surprised you don’t have a little 1/4 in ratchet set instead of an adjustable wrench.

    Not good that you decided not to find the missing piece of the impeller down stream in the intercooler

    Pipe threads use sealer
    Real Techs use the proper wrenches, not adjustables... and have a selection of oil filter wrenches of some sorts...
    Did you find and remove the broken impellor blade sir ?
    You could never work for me ...

    Thanks for more good generator info. My 8kw FP is challenging me by weeping green coolant from the water pump hole. I’ll keep my eye open for a video between now and spring when the boat comes out of storage.

    Have you ever had to clean out the screen /flame arrestor ? If so can that be done fairly easily ?

    • @JustinLeeMarine
      @JustinLeeMarine  Рік тому

      You should be able to clean it. I would spray carb cleaner and use an air compressor to blow it out.

      @@JustinLeeMarine do you have to remove it to do so ? And if so is there just one bolt that holds it on or do you have to take out the 4 bolts on top ?

    I’ve had both the FP on two Grady’s 330 & 370 Express and two WB’s on Regals. I like both gensets but I have to give the WB the edge and they’re gas so they can burn from the big tanks vs a dedicated 13-15 gal diesel.

    Why would gas being getting in with oil in a westerbeke generator on a 38xo ?

    • @JustinLeeMarine
      @JustinLeeMarine  Рік тому

      Could be a few things causing that to happen. Stuck fuel injector, fuel pump( if it's a mechanical style that uses the crank case for pressure), the rings on the pistons being worn. Keep me posted if you find out what is happening.

      @@JustinLeeMarine so actually I drained the oil and I think it’s water .. since it’s sitting below the milky oil … or could that be gas ? What is the best procedure if it’s water ? Could that happen from running with the sea cock open and not running the generator ? Doesn’t the anti siphon loop take care of that ? Generator is only a 2021 with 250hrs on it

    • @JustinLeeMarine
      @JustinLeeMarine  Рік тому

      You will smell gas if it's in the oil. It's very strong when it enters anywhere it is not supposed to be. If it's water I would run it after changing the oil and do that again. You should shut the valve if you are not running the generator. It can fill up the exhaust and put water in the head. If you keep getting water in the oil after changing it several times then you have a problem internally. The anti siphon won't help water getting in only water trying to leave after you run it.

    Doug is a great parts person-the technician should never have to wait for his parts, they should be on the counter and let the tech go turn some hours. I’m currently boat shopping, and I’m really thinking I should downsize to a boat that doesn’t need a generator.

    • @JustinLeeMarine
      @JustinLeeMarine  2 роки тому

      Doug definitely is and it's not bad to have a generator in the boat. Just depends on what one and if you have a good tech to work on it. In my experience Fischer Panda and Onan seem to hold up the best. Thanks for watching.

    Justin again great videos. when does a generator typically need routine service? are some better than others in terms of service cost? yamaha motor service at 25hours seem ridiculous to me.

    • @JustinLeeMarine
      @JustinLeeMarine  2 роки тому

      I personally like the Fischer Panda and Onan gensets. Both diesels. They are all relatively the same for cost of service. It's every 100 hours or once a year. Whichever might come first. The first service on the Yamaha is just to make sure we don't find excessive metal in the oils or find anything that might be going wrong from Yamaha manufacturing. This just provides Yamaha with the chance to catch something before it becomes a problem and helps their quality control. Hope that helps and thanks for the questions.
