    Alanis Morrisette’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’ has to be one of the most powerful rock albums from the 90’s, especially by a female artist. Her voice is golden and the songs she sang on the album worked for her so well. Probably an overlooked gem these days but she definitely was one of a kind back in the 90’s. Great review, great performer, great song. I recommend listening to the original recordings…pretty sure there’s a music video to this song. As well as there is at least 5 solid songs (including ‘You Oughta Know’) off this album that helped define her career. Til next time, keep up the great work. Love Music.
    Other noteworthy songs off the album:

    The original version is better, IMO, because the instruments also sound angsty and fiery. Plus you're missing out on Flea on bass and Dave Navarro on guitar. Love her voice in an acoustic setting though, very powerful. Alanis is an amazing songwriter. When this song came out, every woman who had ever felt this way after being lied to/cheated on, and shoved it down because it was 'inappropriate,' realized they weren't alone. She's ruminating and mourning a loss... that's not abnormal for the situation.
    For a follow up, check out her song "Thank You."

      To be fair...this IS the original version. Alanis and a guitar. That said, MOST songs we hear aren't the original...just the writer and his or her chosen instrument... This is just pure Alanis. Fun Fact: She has never said publicly who this song is about, and has said she never will, but David Coulier is the most likely candidate. Which, if true, provides a lot of context for this song because he would have been 32 at the time of the relationship, and Alanis would have been 17.

      Cut it out. :)
      I like the way you worded this. The subject of the song is ambiguous, and Alanis and Uncle Joey certainly had a relationship badly end right around the time this song was written. But that also doesn't mean the song is entirely about him. There could be multiple people that inspired the song, or even completely fictional aspects to it as well.
      Though it's certainly interesting to imagine that Dave Coulier could be like that. :D

    I've been binge watching you for days, but this artist will make me speak up. The acoustic version of this song loses so much of its young girl anger and so much of the music is missing it makes it more of a bitter song which changes a lot of the meaning. Her Canadian accent is quite prominent in most of her songs, but I always felt it was strongest in this one. You should listen to her song Uninvited. That one is kind of chilling. I know others have stated she was younger when this came out, but to give it a little more perspective, Alanis had released two pop albums and was opening for Vanilla Ice before she graduated high school, she was known as the Canadian Debbie Gibson or Tiffany. After she graduated she moved to Toronto and later L.A. this song was the debut track on her 3rd album. So she wasn't even 21 yet, and not only a young woman full of angst, she was very much trying to show a departure from her former image as a wholesome pop star.

      I have to say, I don't think her age made a difference. I've experienced the betrayal of a significant other at a more mature age (30s - 40s) and I completely identified with the emotion in this song. It's normal to ruminate after something as tragic as finding out your lover betrayed you in the "bed that was made." If she were simply petty, she would've outted the person who made her feel this a long time ago... she admitted she wasn't just dating "Uncle Joey" when she wrote the song. Who it was was beside the point. It was about pouring out an emotion that was "unacceptable" to show in public at the time, and it evoked a response from both men and women who agreed. It helped normalize being 'not okay after being betrayed' (i.e. trauma)... and discourage a whole future set of assholes.

      @nateaurand1601 2 роки тому +3

      @@scapito I completely agree. However as a songwriter myself, and as a person who has been through similar experiences, I think she would have chose her words differently as a more mature person. A younger person embraces that anger and hurt in their writing. Its cathartic. But a person in there 35 plus years may choose to send the same message in a more elegant fashion. Or not. It all depends on the person. In any case, it's a fantastic and empowering song

      Or at least the original audio. The video for this isn't anything particularly special, but the original audio is way way better than this. The anger, the angst, the wailing/crying after the second verse. This was too toned down to convey how we all felt the first time we listened to this song back in the day.

    This song came out in 1995 and I feel/felt that for the first time a woman spoke the truth she felt about being heartbroken. I love this song, and it’s a great break-up song that shows us the pure raw emotion that comes with heartbreak. Plus, in addition to the heartbreak she finds out she has been replaced so quickly with another woman. Think about it for a moment how devastating it is to have someone breakup with you. Someone you truly loved, and then it’s gone. Your world is no longer the same. Alanis expresses those feelings so aptly and succinctly. It’s a 100% pure song.
    Listen to the original version next.
    Music is meant to make us feel. The songs we listen to become the soundtrack of our life during the time the song was released, and now anytime we/I feel like listen/feel or tap into the raw human experience.

    Interesting Male perspective and I respect your statements.
    Seems you were put off by some lyrics, but they are HERS, no apologies necessary. 👍🏽
    Alannis felt what many people feel at the end of a break up, marriage, engagements, partnerships, roommates, etc, she just put it all out there in black and white, and in music.
    I'd highly recommend listening to the original released version to get the full effect including the anger.
    Song is rumored to be about Uncle Joey fr Full House, Dave Collier.
    Both of them are fr Canada.

      As a Male I was significantly more put off by his reaction of it all then anything she said.. There were some red flags in this reaction and none of them were coming from Alanis.. I do agree the original version conveys it all much better especially as a first time listen. Call me crazy but after a tough breakup writing a few slightly "dirty things" is pretty mild to say the least haha.

  • @Arakiel9
    @Arakiel9 2 роки тому +5

    When this was released in 1995 I was a fairly young idealistic 24 year old feminist. Alanis was a bold, brash, 21 year old artist who was known for being a child actor on Nickelodeon. Her raw emotional expression was something that didn't feel petty to me. I didn't want her to 'get over it'. I wanted to see a woman who would speak her truth, to raise her voice about the things that mattered most to her, despite a society that wanted her to stay quiet and behave. As a male I had always been able to do this without being insulted or shamed for being weak, or petty, or a 'bitch'. My righteous indignation was met with tolerance and the appearance of understanding, even when people knew I was taking things too seriously or just whining. They would think I was being dramatic, but they wouldn't look me in the face and tell me that I was being a problem or 'needed therapy' (even though, honestly, I did).
    Seeing someone who was (partially) in the box of 'child star', even if she didn't have a huge role in the Nickelodeon world, use profanity and express rage at her perception of being wronged was fiercely empowering. It felt empowering for many to see a woman who was able to not just 'get away' with swearing and kicking a little musical ass (albeit imperfectly), but to be lauded for doing so. It encouraged me, personally, to double down, educate myself, learn how to be a better ally, and to keep fighting because things were moving in the right direction.
    Disclaimer: I am NOT making this about me, I am just sharing how it felt in what seemed a hopeless situation. The discomfort and anger that I felt at seeing the way my mother was treated in the work place, or my friends had been treated in school were NOTHING compared to actually living it. Despite my male privilege, I still felt rage, and I remain convinced that everyone has a role to play in making things better.

    I suggest listening to Unsent, Ironic, Head over Feet, Thank U. The album, Jagged Little Pill, was huge. The next one, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie’, was also quite good.
    1995 was huge for women I loved listening to. Alanis, Paula Cole, Sarah MacLachlan, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Jewel, Joan Osborne, Ani DiFranco…. And more… Just an awesome year for women singers.
