In the early stages of the Moon a lot of asteroids hit the Moon and triggered volcanism. This resulted in huge pools of molten rock on the surface of the Moon. This molten rock then solidified into basalt rock. This basalt rock is basically the dark patches or spots which we see on the Moon today.
