Darnold was an MVP candidate in his first 4 games with the Panthers: 10 TDs total, 1200 passing yds. Then McCaffrey went down and his receivers kept dropping passes (Moore led NFL in drops and Anderson was close behind). This is the first season he has a top 3 WR, top 3 TE and a great offensive minded head coach. If he doesn't ball out in MN, he's not gonna do it anywhere.

Well if the running game comes through and I think he needs one in order to run a productive offense there's no excuses left, addison and Jefferson are one of if not the best wr duos in the league ,Aaron Jones is a top 7 rb along with hockenson at t.e he's got all the weapons, if he plays better than cousins they could win the division ....getting past the packers of course

@@jaha777jaha6 Agreed. This is truly Sam's FINAL CHANCE to prove he can be a starter in this league.
If he succeeds (which I think he will), then he'll get another legit opportunity either here with the Vikes or elsewhere and get PAID well on a multiple-year deal this time.
If he, god forbid, fails then his naysayers would be proven right and he'll be a backup for the rest of his career which would suck considering the first two teams he was on, they didn't do jack-diddly to put him in a position to succeed from the get-go.
I'm still leaning toward him balling out, though, so LET'S F'N GOOOO.

Darnold and Mayfield both played on the 2022 Panthers, below are a comparison of their performances in games in which they started.
    BAKER MAYFIELD
    Starts: 6
    Passing TD: 4
    Rushing TD: 1
    INT: 6
    FMB: 5
    Passing YDS: 1,158
    Rushing YDS: 52
    Total YDS: 1,210
    Pass Attempts: 186
    Rush Attempts: 16
    Record: 1W - 5L
(Mayfield appeared in 1 additional game against the Bengals, coming in during the top of the 3rd quarter and down by 35 points (some would call this “garbage time”). He threw for 2 TD, 0 INT, and 155 YDS. The Panthers lost: 21-42)
    SAM DARNOLD
    Starts: 6
    Passing TD: 7
    Rushing TD: 2
    INT: 3
    FMB: 6
    Passing YDS: 1,143
    Rushing YDS: 106
    Total YDS: 1,249
    Pass Attempts: 140
    Rush Attempts: 26
    Record: 4W - 2L
(During Baker Mayfield’s time as a 2022 Panther, Christian McCaffery played in 5 out of 6 Mayfield starts, and DJ Moore played in 6 out of 6 Mayfield starts. During Sam Darnold’s time as a 2022 Panther, Christian McCaffery played in 0 out of 6 Darnold starts, and DJ Moore played in 6 out of 6 Darnold starts)
Based on these stats, I believe people are heavily undermining the ability of Darnold especially when compared to Mayfield. We have an identical sample size for these two players who were on the same team in the same year, and people look over it. Darnold can absolutely have a major year on the Vikings, given what Mayfield did on the Bucs.

    • @robe2504
      @robe2504 2 місяці тому +8

I agree, and if you watch the games, I think he looks even better. He only really had DJ Moore to work with. We saw how Bryce Young was absolutely crucified the following year behind that O Line with no one getting open.

I haven't seen enough of him playing to form any opinion.
I will say that it's hard to evaluate young QBs off of rookie years or sporadic starts.
Especially when they've been on bad or multiple teams. Or multiple bad teams.

Justin Fields made the Bears the #1 offense in the entire NFL fro 3 weeks running the same year those stats are from without Run-CMC _or_ D. J. Moore.
Why tf didn't the Vikings get _him_ so they wouldn't have to trade their future away for a QB?

    • @robe2504
      @robe2504 2 місяці тому

@@choosecarefully408 And again you spout under-informed pre-conceived BS. Run CMC was traded to the 49ers after Baker's stint, and before Darnold's 6 games. I'm also pretty sure that Fields did have DJ Moore.
So your angst actually amplifies how significant the difference was in favour of Darnold.
And you might also consider that KOC and Kwesi acquired Darnold the moment Kirk walked out the door - so it was clearly a pre-determined plan - and they had to pay a bit because I'd guess Shanahan and the 49ers were pretty keen to keep him.
But then again what would a SB winning OC and three time SB coach know about NFL QBs that you wouldn't??

If you are sceptical about Darnold, just watch that Ravens 49ers game. The Ravens trashed Purdy from the get go sacking him 4 or 5 times in 3 quarters, hurried him into a 50% completion rate, and eventually knocked him out of the game.
Darnold came in - threw 3 completions, before a drop by CMC then this TD that Bercich analyses. Darnold was sacked on his next drive when Colton McKivitz (the emergency in game fill in at LT for Trent Williams) was beaten pointlessly, but he recovered and drove the field again despite a couple of drops, and his INT was basically a Hail Mary forced into pressure.
Sam can really play, and we might forget Kirk quicker than we expect.

@@choosecarefully408 Sure, you can take that, or you could consider that Darnold succeeded under the same duress when Purdy couldn't.
And you could consider that Purdy had the best LT in the game Trent Williams, whereas Sam had an emergency Kolton McKivitz improvising there.
Or you could actually bother watching some of Darnold's most recent starts for the Panthers where everyone was trying and he went 4-2 (that's winning), when he was playing for a much worse team, and still smacked over the Lions the week after the Lions comfortably beat the Cousins led Vikes.
Or you could stick with your initial, lazy position typically suited for an uninformed simp.

@@robe2504& the Panthers didn't keep him because why? _He_ didn't *win* those games. The team won despite him. Didn't he fumble the ball right before the end zone in two of their wins? I know people conflate wins with playing well, but Dan Marino's entire career makes that assertion a lie. Cripes, so does Tom Brady's.
When the HC is Todd Bowles or Nick Sirianni & the entire game strategy is to pit one's roster against that of the other team, then a QB might get a chance to be responsible for the win by doing something that wasn't the play-calling Darnold did better than Mayfield in those circumstances. So what now, he's S-tier?
He's someone you start when even Baker Mayfield sucks. He's Gardner Minshew but with a way lower ceiling.
This is aggravating. I returned to watching NFL games only after I discovered channels that provide some analysis so I can tell when something is the play-calling, the defense, the o-line etc. Everywhere I get people who then turn all this high-end analysis into "he won that game so he must be better."
Are there *two QBs playing every snap* that you're comparing them so eagerly only this way, or is it that this is the only way he can seem decent? It's the second one of course. Steelers fans are now doing this with Russ.
Because they dream that neither Russ nor Fields is actually better than what they had they dream that Russ is the QB he was 6-10 years ago & Fields can learn from him. _Those_ people don't watch games.
Russ has led the league in passes behind the line of scrimmage *five years straight* & doesn't even look at any receiver in the middle of the field nor heading there. Fields has had his own coaches sabotage him for two years straight & during that time still made the lowly Bears offense #1 in the league 3 weeks straight. Russ is done, Fields may be élite.
But even the comments on the videos proving Fields is being sabotaged the comments are like yours: _"He_ can't win" like he is responsible for the play-calling. When the Bills get a lead twice in a game then Sean McDermott takes over the play-calling & gives the victory away, is that Josh Allen's fault? Equating team wins with QB play strictly is BS.
Brady has a higher winning % in playoff games where he threw *3 or more INTs than Aaron Rodgers has in playoff games where he threw 3 or more TDs.* Rodgers is _clearly_ the better QB in those games that he lost, Brady _clearly_ worse in those games that he won. *Enough of this BS disguised as analysis.*
If you can't see what makes one QB better than another, how do you even enjoy the games? Darnold still plays like he's trying not to look over his shoulder constantly. I don't _hate_ the guy, I can see that the *skills* are there. He's simply not mentally focused most of the time. I like Drew Lock too, but similar thing.
I didn't like Cousins' play at all. About 3 games before he tore his achiles tendon he had Just Started to focus better in clutch situations, something he lacked terribly. I don't make up my mind anyone can't progress.
At this point we haven't seen it with Darnold. KOC is a great coach for a QB, but so is Brian Daboll & you can only get more out of a QB than another coach would. But Daboll is never gonna make Jones Mahomes & KOC at best can make Darnold what? Baker Mayfield on a bad day? Or as I said above, Gardner Minshew but with less sparkle?

I hope we are giving due consideration to Bo Nix in the draft. Just when I was dropping Nix down a couple notches I find this. It's long, but well worth the read. It seems like it was written by the Bo Nix PR dept., but it was written by a PFF analyst. I'm hoping KOC and KAM see this.
PFF's Mason Cameron - 2024 NFL Draft: Highest-graded quarterbacks in every category
CLEAN-POCKET GRADE: CALEB WILLIAMS, USC (93.4)
When the protection holds up and Williams is given adequate time to work, there isn’t a better passer in the nation. Without pressure, the Trojans' signal-caller amassed 17 big-time throws with just two turnover-worthy plays in 2023, with the latter being the lowest of any eligible passer in this year’s class.
PRESSURED GRADE: BO NIX, OREGON (91.2)
Nix established himself as the far and away best passer when under pressure this past season, with his 91.2 grade sitting more than 18 points on the grading scale above the next highest grader. The Oregon product recorded an outstanding 9-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio when pressured.
BLITZED GRADE: BO NIX, OREGON & JOHN RHYS PLUMLEE, UCF (90.6)
Just three passers surpassed the 90.0 grading threshold against the blitz, with Nix and Plumlee sharing this title among draft hopefuls. Nix made few mistakes when faced with blitzes, totaling 21 touchdowns and zero turnover-worthy plays, both of which pace the class. While Plumlee may not have thrown nearly as many touchdowns, he attacked the defenses that blitzed him, producing a 12.6-yard average target depth and a 61.6% air-yards rate.
PLAY-ACTION GRADE: MICHAEL PENIX JR., WASHINGTON (93.0)
Washington made effective use of run action all season long, a scheme in which Penix excelled. The former Husky led the class in play-action dropbacks (198) this past season, from which he produced 18 big-time throws and zero turnover-worthy plays while amassing 96 first-downs - all of which led this year’s prospects.
THROWS PAST THE STICKS GRADE: JAYDEN DANIELS, LSU & BO NIX, OREGON (94.8)
Needless to say, former transfers Daniels and Nix both attacked opposing defenses this past season, with each throwing more than 37% of their passes beyond the sticks. That aggressive approach allowed them to produce fantastic numbers, including each surpassing 30 touchdowns with sub-3% turnover-worthy play rates when targeting past the sticks.
SHORT PASSING GRADE: CALEB WILLIAMS, USC (90.7)
Williams has the awareness to orchestrate the timing and tempo needed to efficiently run the short-passing game. The Trojans' signal-caller produced 7.3 yards per attempt with an incredible 84.4% adjusted completion rate on throws targets nine yards or less downfield, all without recording a turnover-worthy play - one of just two draft-eligible quarterbacks to throw none.
INTERMEDIATE PASSING GRADE: BO NIX, OREGON (94.7)
The Oregon standout had a knack for finding the soft spots of FBS defenses and using a defender’s leverage against them, which allowed him to attack the intermediate parts of the field (10-19 yards) with ease. Nix showed off incredible ball placement, particularly when targeting back-shoulder routes, in the intermediate passing game, where he racked up 16 scores and just a single turnover-worthy play.
DEEP PASSING GRADE: JAYDEN DANIELS, LSU (99.2)
The Heisman Trophy winner has a rocket for an arm, and he wasn’t afraid to make full use of it this past season. Daniels produced a phenomenal, class-leading 63.3% adjusted completion rate with 22.4 yards per attempt and a 142.4 passer rating on deep throws.
FIRST- AND SECOND-DOWN GRADE: JAYDEN DANIELS, LSU; BO NIX, OREGON; & MICHAEL PENIX JR., WASHINGTON (91.3)
Keeping an offense on schedule on early downs is one of the more stable metrics when evaluating quarterback play. Daniels managed an impressive 140.7 passer rating on first and second downs, while Penix tallied 40 big-time throws and Nix produced an 83.9% adjusted completion rate.
THIRD- AND FOURTH-DOWN GRADE: BO NIX, OREGON (91.8)
Accuracy on late downs was undoubtedly a strong point of Nix’s game this past season. The Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year managed an outstanding 82.3% adjusted completion rate on third and fourth downs while targeting 50.5% of his throws past the sticks. Additionally, Nix surrendered just a single sack on 113 late-down dropbacks.
RED-ZONE GRADE: SAM HARTMAN, NOTRE DAME (88.8)
While he took just 41 dropbacks in the red zone, Hartman produced class-leading marks in big-time throw rate (8.1%) and adjusted completion percentage (83.3%). Perhaps more impressively, 12 of Hartman’s 24 completions resulted in scores.
OUTSIDE THE POCKET GRADE: BO NIX, OREGON (87.9)
Nix boasts the requisite athleticism to make plays from outside the pocket. When flushed in 2023, he produced an 81.7% adjusted completion rate and a 65.2% air-yards rate on his way to nine passing touchdowns and just a pair of interceptions.
THROWS OUTSIDE THE NUMBERS GRADE: JAYDEN DANIELS, LSU (92.8)
It takes immense arm talent to attack outside the numbers at a high level, something Daniels displayed time and time again in 2023. The LSU standout flashed his strong arm often with impressive throws outside, totaling a 14.1% big-time throw rate and a 144.4 passer rating - both top marks in the class.
THROWS INSIDE THE NUMBERS GRADE: DRAKE MAYE, NORTH CAROLINA (93.4)
The North Carolina signal-caller displayed masterful control when attacking inside the numbers. Maye took advantage of the middle of defenses often with a variety of concepts that allowed him to target all levels of the field. His 17 big-time throws led the class, along with an impressive 1.2% turnover-worthy play rate that ranked second among 2024 draft prospects.

The more tape I watch of this kid being broken down the more I'm not concerned about what the Vikings are going to do at QB in the draft....and I think the front office knows that so they have all the cards in their hand in this years draft. Can you bank on Darnold being a franchise guy at this point...that's a tough sell, but I certainly think he could at least give us a competitive team while he mentors the next guy we draft this year.
At this point I'm down for whatever happens. I just want them to fix the trenches for sure and maybe grab a CB prospect.

I'll take Sam Darnold over ANY of the QB's the Vikings would pick in this draft. Hell, I would rather see Mullens start than the Vikings absolutely waste a 1st round pick on ANY of these QBs and squander the chance to bring in young talent that could actually help build a championship caliber team for a number of years. Darnold is still young, obviously has the skills needed to succeed, and has actual work put in and experience at the NFL level. The Vikings are absolutely wasting their draft position angling for any of these overhyped college QBs.

I was thinking the same. these QB kids are just a crap shoot. Look at how many have been drafted with so much hype and turned out to be busts! Harrison Jr. is a sure shot, but we would have to get to the third pick to have a shot at getting him. That would excite me!

I don't believe the hype. The new QB meta is to find someone who can create and possibly scramble. These old school QBs rarely do that and want to be pocket passers. Only the super accurate and IQ ones who can read the defense can be true pocket passers. We don't need someone who can just take us to the playoffs again, we need someone to take us to the SuperBowl. Is that Darnold? Nope.

Darnold's a bridge quarterback and a career backup and should be treated as such. Nobody is expecting this guy to suddenly become a world beater, even coming to a team with an improved offense. He is what he is; a placeholder until the new quarterback, whomever it may be, is ready to take over.

can't show a picture of other teams. and there is a big difference in other teams O-line compare to vikings. how many time did cousin get sack or have to scramble. that is how many time darnolds going to scramble and get sack too. nothing will change.

    • @robe2504
      @robe2504 2 місяці тому +1

Right... Are you aware that there are a lot of O Lines that are significantly worse than the Vikes? Darnold got sacked jus as much as Cousins and Darnold is much quicker and more agile in the pocket than Cousins. I think you'll find that Sam does pretty well behind the Vikes line.
Sam is also a much more dangerous runner than Kirk. He is not as good as Lamar, Kyler, Josh Allen, or Fields, but after them he might be one of the best rushing QBs in the league.

    • @auslee2431
      @auslee2431 2 місяці тому

@@robe2504 yeah thats what makes viking playoff contenders. they just needs a little more to boost it up sum to be superbowl contenders. i wouldn't put sam behind those good qbs its none comparable i should say. i dont doubt sam he was a better pick then dobbs so that a plus. lol! then i always felt like viking abandon the run game ever sense they got jj and got rid of cook. so they will definitely need to build their line up again to support running Qb and Rb. this might be the year .

I think you're underestimating Darnold. He was drafted at 3 because of his prototypical traits and potential and put into some terrible situations as a young player. He is arguably more talented than Kirk and his recent record as a 26 year old is little different from Kirk's record when he arrived as a 30 year old. The rookie might end up sitting as long as Jordan Love.
